Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2663: Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy Engaged - A Body Language Sign of Affection (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy have just announced their engagement via Wozniacki' twitter account (New Year's Eve 2013).

Wozniacki and McIlroy are both former World No. 1 ranked athletes in tennis and golf respectively.

Why it's possible to have love without (or with minimal) affection, when affection is felt and displayed - love is also present (though of course it's not always romantic love).

... And within the context of romantic relationships - when affection is waning, it's a warning signal that love many be very well also be diminishing.

In all three of these images both Wozniacki's and McIlroy's head & neck are leaning towards each other - displaying certain affection.

Body Language signals of affection are often poorly understood and unfortunately often confused with and "lumped-in" with sexuality and sexual displays. This is particularly true when it comes to dating, romantic and/or marital scenarios.  And while affection can and should exist during sex - affection (and therefore affectionate displays) can and should "stand on their own" for romantic love to be healthy and project longevity.

Quick - how many affectionate nonverbal signals can you think of? How many do you display on a regular basis?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2662: Mike Shanahan Fired - A Man of Many Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Mike Shanahan, the head coach of the Washington Redskins was fired today. In four years at the helm, Shanahan collected a record of 24-40 with just three wins this season.

Today is known in the National Football league as "Black Monday". As the first day after the end of the NFL's regular season it brings casualties every season and this year was no different. Four other coaches lost their jobs as well - the Minnesota Vikings fired coach Leslie Frazier, the Cleveland Browns let go of Rob Chudzinski, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waved goodbye to Greg Schiano and the Detroit Lions canned Jim Schwartz.

In the image above Mike Shanahan can be seen exhibiting several key body language components significant of anger. Note that his lips are thinned-out nearly to the point of disappearing. Shanahan's "Mustache Area" is also significantly tightened. These "Thinned Lips of Anger" are highly specific for anger and are often confused with an "Inward Lip Roll" (aka ILR).

Shanahan's clenched jaw (also highly consistent with anger) is betrayed by the concave-down furrow beneath his lower lip in addition to dimpling of the skin on the front of the coach's chin.

Eye are often partially closed with lower levels of anger (think Clint Eastwood in a Western) - however when the anger is moderate or higher, the eyelids will open wider. Shanahan is quite angry in this photo. What other emotions also have eyes opened "White and Wide"?

Although many beginners will only think of dilated nostrils (or a single nostril) in the context of disgust or contempt, significant anger also will be accompanied by flared nostrils. What are some other emotions with this nasal configuration?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2661: Second Suicide Bombing in Russia in 24 Hours - Body Language of Leaders (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

With the second suicide bombing in less than 24 hours in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), Russia and the Winter Olympics in Sochi just five weeks away, tensions are understandably very high among the Russian people and the Russian leaders. In the video above, which is partially translated, several Russian officials are interviewed and below is a partial body language analysis.

One very important take home point here is that the vast majority of nonverbal signals cross all ethnic and cultural barriers.

Take the time to watch the video as the nuance of these body language displays must be seen in dynamic context in order to be best learned.

At 0:21 this microexpression of regret is displayed by Olga Golodets (Deputy Prime Minister of Cultural Affairs) - primarily displayed on the right side of her mouth (do not mistake this expression with contempt - for although she may have contempt - in this very moment she feels regret, see below for contrast).

With what other body language is also being displayed here?

About a second later (0:22) Ms. Golodets displays regret once more - this time her display is more symmetrical (left is roughly equal to right). Regret may be both unilaterally or bilaterally manifested.

Later in the video at 0:50, Vladimir Markin (Investigative Committee Spokesman) displays a clear yet very brief expression of contempt. This fleeting signal is thus also a microexpression.

The Chechen separatists, particularly the followers of Doku Umarov who encouraging his co-believers "to their utmost to derail" the Olympics are the primary group suspected in these terrorists activities.

My deep condolences to the Russian people, especially to the families and loved-ones of those killed and wounded.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2660: Chris Weidman after Anderson Silva UFC 168 Fight - Body Language "Duping Delight" Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Weidman beat Anderson Silva yesterday in Las Vegas on a TKO in the second round of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC 168) upon Silva breaking his left tibia and fibula (both of the bones comprising lower leg). In this back stage interview of Weidman after the fight (above video), we see the middleweight UFC World Champion exampling the nonverbal known as "duping delight" (Ekman).

This image was captured at 0:20

Megan Olivi asks, "...After you realized what had happened, what went through your mind?"

Weidman answers, "I knew he was, I, well obviously I knew when I checked the kick he was - I saw something not look good and he went down in pain - and ah, ..."

His suppressed smile (as he says "...not look good...")tells us that he is being deceptive here. Of course, it was very good - but for Weidman. They both were there to hurt their opponent and inflict bodily damage and pain.

Weidman continues, "... so I was just makin' sure he was alright and I felt bad for him. You know I don't like to see someone's leg get broken."

This very brief nonverbal display seen at 0:25 when he says, "...bad..." is a clear example of a microexpression of duping delight.

It should not surprise too many people that a UFC fighter would be lying in such a scenario. The take home point however, is that in the many daily situations when the verbal message contradicts or is not congruent with the nonverbal message - it is the nonverbal which indicates the person's true thoughts-feelings. Knowing how to recognize these disparities in all their nuance is a skill for which there is no parallel.

It is also very important to note that there were NO signals of empathy displayed by Weidman. If this fight had not occurred in the octagon - but in the street (as many similar ones do on a daily basis) - we would say "He displays no nonverbal signs of remorse".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2659: Mark Wahlberg, his Wife and "Lone Survivor" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Mark Wahlberg was recently on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" promoting his just released film, "Lone Survivor" as well as his new reality series, "Wahlburgers". Below is a partial body language analysis.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

At 1:17 Wahlberg displays a unilateral microexpression of regret (unilateral example - note that regret can be bilaterally expressed as well) just after he says, "... I tried to introduce them to the BB gun, but my wife [Rhea Durham] was having no part of it ...".

Do not mistake this for the somewhat similar expression of contempt. Can you differentiate these nonverbals?

A fraction of a second later, Wahlberg displays a bilateral eyelid closure. In such a context, this is a nonverbal amplifier of the just-shown regret signal.

At 2:49, Kimmel asks, "Does your wife know about this?"

Wahlberg answers, "She did hear about it but ah, you know but he's crazy!..."

Wahlberg reaches for and then briefly twists his wedding ring - displaying a signal specific of marital-related anxiety.

What other body language signs in this video let you read between the lines?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2658: Misidentifying Emotional Expressions - Greece's Golden Dawn Party Arrests - Body Language and Threat Assessment

Earlier this year, Nikos Michaloliakos, the leader of "Golden Dawn" Party was arrested in Athens, Greece and (along with others) was charged with running a criminal organization responsible for the murder of Pavlos Fyssas, (an anti-fascist, an anti-racist and a noted musician) as well as extortion and the disappearance of up to 100 immigrants.

The frequency of otherwise socially skilled people emotionally mislabeling others expressions' is very frequent. For example, most people will misidentify the primary emotion being displayed here by Mr. Michaloliakos (pictured above in handcuffs) - which is disgust.

Disgust is an emotion (and thus also displayed via facial expressions) which is extremely common among those who perpetrate crime against another person or group of people motivated out of prejudice.

Take note of the following very prominently displayed characteristics on Mr. Michaloliakos's face (an expression of extreme disgust):
  • Furrows (active wrinkles via a dynamic muscle contraction) on the bridge of the nose
  • Accentuated Nasal-labial furrow (between the side of the nose and the corners of the mouth)
  • Lower Lip is protruded and raised
  • Upper Lip is raised and protruded (typically less prominently than lower lip)
  • Corners of mouth depressed (vectored downward)
  • The "Mustache Area" (between upper lip and bottom of nose, regardless of gender) is tightened
  • Both Nostrils are Flared (Dilated Nostrils)
  • Eyebrows are lowered
  • Dimpling of the Chin
  • Relaxed Forehead
What is his secondary emotion being felt and displayed here and what changes on his face reveal it?

Take home point: Chronic or frequent displays of disgust are warning signs and are crucial to threat assessment. Avoid such individuals - and if you must approach them, do so with high caution.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2657: Keanu Reeves's, "47 Ronin" and a Hesitancy to Discuss - a Key Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

A fantastic body language tell is displayed in the above video. Keanu Reeves is being interviewed regarding his just released movie, "47 Ronin" by Savannah Guthrie (Today).

Beginning at 2:20, Guthrie asks the accomplished actor, "Well, it's really exciting to watch and I, I was thinking about you because honestly we don't see you that often. You seem to be very choosy about your projects. Is that on purpose? Is that by design?"

Reeves answers, "Yeah. Yeah ...I mean, you know you want to find the right project. You wanna [deep exhale] ummm, yeah, I can just say that. You know."

During the 2:27 - 2:29 segment as Guthrie says, "... about your projects. Is that on purpose? ..." (And probably repeated however camera angle precludes the view), Reeves rubs both of his thighs with each hand forward to and then including the knees. This self-massage, rubbing of the thighs is an example what is known as a Manipulator, Adaptor or Pacifier (aka MAP) and is consistent with a heightened anxiety state. However, when this progresses forward (and downward) to include the knees, there is a particularly hesitancy in full disclosure of the matter being discussed. This evasiveness is clearly expressed verbally in this example of Reeves - however in other scenarios it is not so obvious. This very specific nonverbal tell is particularly helpful during vetting, voir dire, negotiations, depositions, interrogations and interview settings.

This is yet another example of a skilled actor being very easy to read with respect to his body language. And he acts for a living. What other significant tells did you see in this video?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2656: Threat Assessment during Robbery - Body Language of Perpetrator (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Real-World crimes are interesting and necessary scenarios in which to evaluate body language. Although the camera angle is not optimal in the above video - and we cannot see the face of the assailant, some significant signals can be gleaned in this example.

Throughout much of this video, the assailant rocks back and forth - alternatively placing greater weight on one leg, then the other. This nonverbal dynamic signals high levels of excessive adrenaline and in common colloquial, this is one manifestation that he is burning off "nervous energy".

On at least three separate occasions (limited viability), the assailant appears to adjust his mask, and his mask may need adjusting - however each time it is the lower portion - not around his eyes which he touches (suggesting an alternative reason).

In body language parlance such facial touching is termed a Manipulator, Adaptor or Pacifier (aka MAP) and its multiple displays here are indicative of strong anxiety.

Facial touching No. 1 during 0:50 - 0:52

Facial touching No. 2 during 0:53 - 0:54

During 1:09 - 1:10 the perpetrator places his feet-legs in a much wider stance. This signals a high probability of an escalation of his attack.

Also at 1:10, just prior to his striking the attendant in the head with the hand gun, he rocks forward once (towards his victim) with his head and torso. This is a further signal of his intention to attack physically.

Facial Touching No. 3 during1:11 - 1:13

This episode interferes with his ability to fend off the store attendant (see next photo below).

The perpetrator's facial touching (as dictated by its cause of anxiety) prevents him from carrying out his plan and places himself at a significant disadvantage.

Although this store attendant was successful in disarming his attacker, his was a very unwise choice and the critique of this video is in no way is an endorsement of such action.

What other nonverbal displays did you note during this short video?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2655: Edward Snowden's Alternative Christmas Message - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Edward Snowden, the infamous NSA leaker, was featured in the Britain's Channel 4's "Alternative Christmas Message" today (in contrast to Queen Elizabeth II's 2013 'Royal Christmas Message'). His brief statement is included in the above video. Below is a partial body language analysis.

Throughout much of the video, Edward Snowden displays body language/facial expression consistent with a lower level of contempt. There were several moments however, when his contempt was significantly amplified over this baseline level.

At 0:24 Snowden continues and compares our world today to the fictionalized
dystopia in '1984', "... Great Britain's George Orwell warned us of the danger of this kind of information. The types of collection in the book: microphones, and video cameras, T.V.'s that watch us - are nothing compared to what we have available today..." At the 0:37 mark, as he says, " ... we have ..." an example of his heightened contempt is displayed (in photo above).

At 0:48, Snowden goes on, "... A child born today, will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They'll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves - an unrecorded, un-analyzed thought ..."

At the 0:56 mark, as he says, "... it means ...", he again shows his intense level of contempt (photo to left).

At the very end of the video, the former subcontractor for the NSA, reveals an unmistakable nonverbal display of anger - thinned lips (configured horizontally and foreshortened) and his mid-face tightening. What other emotional expression is super imposed in this moment (1:41)?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2654: Carey Mulligan on Jimmy Kimmel - Body Language Part II (VIDEO, PHOTO)

In her recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live", Carey Mulligan touts her most recent film "Inside Llewyn Davis" (Coen Brothers). She also gives us a great body language cluster - which among other things is correlative with a High Sincerity Quotient.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The image above however, was captured from this video. In the original, the talented (yet very human) actor tilts her head to her right (exposing a greater portion of her neck to Kimmel), looks slightly upwards and focused at a distance. The neck tilt demonstrates, particularly coincident with this "far away", upward gaze signifies an honest vulnerability and indicates a sincere emotional tone.

She also scratches her right arm with her left hand. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) amounts to what is a partial arm cross. The nonverbal cluster occurs when she is contrasting "American Christmases" with Christmases in her home city and country (London, England). Her unilateral arm cross strongly suggests she has spent the holiday season in far from home and doesn't care for it.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2653: Carey Mulligan - Blunted Surprise and ... Body Language on Jimmy Kimmell, Part I (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Carey Mulligan is promoting her most recent film "Inside Llewyn Davis" and was featured in a video clip from a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live". Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

At 1:30 the dialog continues....

Kimmel: "What are you going to do f-, do you go back to England for the Holidays?"

Mulligan: "I do, yeah, I go back to London."

Kimmel: "That seems like it is the best place to have Chr-, the most Christmassy place to have Christmas."

Mulligan: "I can't, yeah, I can't really ... The American Christmases seem [surprise at 1:45] Not, No offense."

Kimmel: "Oh, [Laughs] uh, oh."

Mulligan: "Awful."

Kimmel: [Continues Laughter]

At 1:45 Mulligan manifests a blunted microexpression of surprise with fear. They are blunted due to of Botox over-treatment on the upper half of her upper face. Here we see that not only does her forehead minimally contract (her eyebrows do shoot upwards for a fraction of a second - yet there are no transient and otherwise normal-for-context, co-existing furrows on her forehead), but her eyelids barely open wider than they were a moment before.

This is a very muted surprise response particularly for an actor and considerably inhibits her (or anyone's) ability for full or even mild emotional expression.

Two tenths of a second later.

Her neck tightens moderately ("Neck of fear").

At 1:46

Hands with palms towards the audience with a downward motion in a subconscious attempt to mollify offense to the audience.

Tightly clenched intertwined fingers in a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) display of high anxiety.

Note the color of her hands, forearms and face from a transient change in blood flow.

A sincere smile with increased blushing of her face is seen at 1:48. True (sincere) surprise is virtually always followed by (or coexistent with) one or two other emotions. Here is embarrassment is seen and above we saw fear manifested.

Mulligan's bilateral "Hair Adjust Behind Ear" body language is commonly seen during moments when the alpha qualities are being dialed-up and assertiveness is being engaged.

Here embarrassment continues.

If surprise is not rapidly followed by a second emotion, there is a very high probability the surprise is at least false (fake) or exaggerated.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2652: Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon on Saturday Night Live - Trying to Suppress the Laughter (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Two nights ago Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon were guests on Saturday Night Live. As always they were hilarious. In the images below the "Inward Lip Roll" is displayed twice by Timberlake as he tries to suppress his joy/laughter.

Note: Since the writing of this post, the original video has since been deleted from its internet source. The video above contains a segment of the skit discussed - capturing the moment of the first image below, but does not include the second image (which is included for completeness).

The inward lip roll (ILR) is seen during the psyche's attempts in suppressing strong emotion (also during some physical acts which require focused concentration). Most often such cases are negative emotions - such as anger, sadness or frustration, etc. In this Family Feud skit however, Timberlake is having trouble staying in character and is trying to suppress his laughter.

This ILR/Body Language example is seen during 2:02 as Timberlake (who is playing Jimmy Fallon in the skit) looks over at the real Fallon who is playing Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory). Fallon (Parsons) has completely lost his composure.

This ILR nonverbal is seen in the original video (which has since been removed).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2651: Peyton Manning sets a Single Season Touchdown Record - Body Language at Press Conference (PHOTO)

Yesterday Peyton Manning reclaimed the NFL's single season passing touchdown record from Tom Brady. He has thrown for 51 and still has a game left in the regular season to up his total. He also stands a more-than-likely chance of eclipsing Drew Brees's record of total yards passing (5476) for a single season.

In the image above (via press conference yesterday), Peyton Manning can be seen speaking with an asymmetrical mouth - something that for him is a normal, baseline behavior. He is however also projecting another (simultaneous) superimposed facial expression. Occasionally speaking out of one side of the mouth will be a signal of insincerity (not the case here with Mr. Manning) - and this will be accurately (if often subconsciously) interpreted even by those with no body language training. Asymmetrical mouth configurations during speech can also signal contempt or regret (Can you differentiate theses expressions?). Here Peyton is displaying neither contempt nor regret though (and regret can be expressed bilaterally as well).

A form of "nonverbal swagger" is seen when a person speaks out of one side of his/her mouth during a suppressed and sincere smile. Great care must be taken to avoid interpreting this swagger body language when the "smile" is insincere (aka false smile or social smile or other expression) - thus indicating a completely different emotion status.
