Body Language Analysis No. 4294: LeBron James, Adrenaline Surges, and Emotional Intelligence - Nonverbal Tells (PHOTOS)

The image above shows LeBron James just after he drained a three-pointer over Jayson Tatum last night in game six of the 2018 NBA's Eastern Conference Finals.

Notice LeBron's jaw - and the degree to which it's jutting forward. This is known as a Jaw Jut - and it's highly indicative of an adrenaline surge.

His eyebrows are also drawn together and vectored downward - yet his eyelids are open wide and tight. His nostrils are also flared. James' face - identical to that of rage is further evidence of his extreme adrenaline surge in this moment.

A few seconds earlier we see King James in action. This would be LeBron's 44th, 45th, and 46th points - in a game where he would score 48 points in 48 minutes.

After making the shot, he bumped Jayson Tatum in another display of dominance.

Other hyper-alpha behaviors displayed by the Cleveland Cavalier forward included screaming and the near-beating of his chest with closed fists.


SUMMARY:  Every experienced athlete knows, that at certain times, such dominance displays not only serve to psych oneself up - but also psyche-out their opponents. Simultaneously, these phenomena are, of course, also celebratory.

Along with LeBron, some athletes are much more skilled at channeling their adrenaline surges' than others. This ability allows them to not only perform superiorly on the court, field, pitch, or rink - but more importantly, it's a life skill which helps hone their impulse control - minimizing anger crescendos and (hopefully) preventing violence. This is not only a reason to take up sports - but should be sought and remain a continuing focus of development, particularly with younger athletes.

Body Language Analysis No. 4134: Hope Hicks, Emotional Intelligence, and Communicating Nonverbally (PHOTOS)

Hope Hicks was named interim White House Communications Director when Anthony Scaramucci was fired on 16 August 2017. She was appointed to the position permanently on 12 September.

This image was captured in the White House briefing room.

Notice the components of Director Hicks' facial expression. Her inner (medial) eyebrows are vectored downward. There's also a tightening of both of her lower eyelids.

Ms. Hicks' torso is not rotated, and while her head is partially turned - her eyes have to gaze far laterally in order for her to fixate on the person who's speaking. We don't look directly at people whom we don't like, don't respect, and/or don't believe.

The Communication Director's mid-face is contracted - more specifically, she's flaring her nostrils and displaying tension in the region above her upper lip and below her nose.

Both of Hicks' lips are dynamically thinned - this is subtle and evident more so with her upper lip.

Her mouth opening is foreshortened with the lip margins oriented horizontally.

The contraction of her mentalis muscles (on the front of the mandible) give rise to her chin dimpling - a signal that she's also clenching her jaw. If you look carefully, you'll also notice the concomitant and subtle "sucking-inward" of her each of cheeks.

In brief Ms. Hicks' nonverbal cluster displays:

• Inner (Medial) Eyebrows Eyebrows vectored downward
• Lower Eyelid Tension
• "Side Eye"
• Nostril Flaring
• Tension in region above Upper Lip/Below Nose
• Lip Thinning (Upper > Lower)
• Horizontal Mouth Opening Orientation
• Sucking Cheeks Inward
• Clenching Jaw
• Chin Dimpling

Summary: Although she isn't speaking a word, in this moment, Director Hicks is feeling - and very much communicating - Anger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3857: Taunting a Snowplow Driver - Belleville, Ontario - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although the back story of this incident was not known at the time of this post, it's an outstanding example of facial changes indicative of crescendoing anger. 

In the image immediately above, note the configuration of the snowplow driver's lips. Although they're not fully visible, we can see that they're thinned and stretched. This horizontal configuration is highly characteristic of anger.

His nostrils are also flaring - which indicates increased respiration, blood pressure and heart rate - all secondary to elevated adrenaline which accompanies anger.

Notice too, the left side of his jaw  - we can see that it's clenching.

With lower to moderate levels of anger, the eyelids partially close - with considerable tension of the lower eyelids. This is well exemplified in this moment.

In this second image, his lips stretch even thinner - almost disappearing - indicative of growing anger. His jaw is thrust forward - known as a "Jaw Jut" - and is virtually always present just before a punch, slap or other act requiring physical strength.

His jaw clenching has also noticeably increased.

The nostril flaring has amplified.

Notice also that his eyelids - particularly his left eye - has opened wider. With high levels of anger (aka "rage") - the eyelids - which were instant earlier, partially closed, are now opening wider.

In this last image, the man's anger is growing even greater - and he is initiating a violent physical act - a strike/slap/hit at his provoker.

His jaw is jutting even further forward as evidenced by the gap opening up between his lips.

In addition, his eyelids are opened even further (still greater on his left) - a classic signal of his anger and an elevated adrenaline state.

Take Home Point: Whenever you see a jaw jut - especially with a clenched fist and/or eyes open widely - protect yourself immediately. Oh, and don't hassle snowplow drivers...

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3825: President Trump's first Expression after Being Introduced - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

What were the first emotions expressed by President Trump after he was introduced yesterday?

Many people in his shoes would exhibit a sincere smile, a social smile or a perhaps a nervous smile. But joy and happiness (or even an attempt at these) were not the expressions (nor the emotions) which Donald Trump displayed (nor felt) when he was introduced by Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) - just after he was sworn-in and immediately prior to his inaugural address. The first emotions President Trump felt and displayed upon being introduced were that of regret and anger (captured below from 0:24).

In the real world, emotions do not always appear in their textbook, pure and isolated forms. Often two or more emotions are experienced simultaneously. Although, because the motion-capture nature of this telephoto video image (immediately above) is of a bit lower resolution, several key features on Mr. Trump's face in this moment delineate the emotions of both regret and anger. This combination can be also thought of as "bitter-anger" or "bitterness".

Note the lateral, backward and down retraction of the corners of Trump's mouth - this cluster is highly characteristic of regret. The thinning of his upper lip along with the jutting forward of his jaw are highly indicative of anger. Moreover, the muscular tension/contraction of the area above his upper lip and below his nose (termed the "mustache area" regardless of the level of facial hair) - along with the flaring of his nostrils - also projects anger. A third anger indicator is the particular type of tension of his lower eyelids and the partial closure of his upper and lower eyelids. Remove for a moment any political bias you may have - if you have no formal nonverbal training at all, but otherwise have good interpersonal and social skills - these emotions should jump out at you.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3805: Mariah Carey's New Year's Eve Lip Sync Fail On Live TV - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Mariah Carey has got a Milli Vanilli problem. She ended 2016 with what appears to have been a prepared lip sync routine in Times Square - but because some of her vocals did function as she anticipated, it dramatically threw off her act.

From a nonverbal perspective the incident gave us a good many teaching examples. The image above is but one of these displays. Captured from a moment during the performance in question (and its cropped close-up below), this demonstrates a classic yet often misunderstood facial expression.

Notice Ms. Carey's lower and mid-facial tension. More specifically, the area between her upper lip and nose is contracted and stretched. Mariah's nostrils are also flaring (dilated). Moreover her jaw is jutting forward - which is difficult to discern here because of the angle, however the multiple small evidences of dimpling on the lower aspect of her chin is a sure sign of a forward-directed jaw under tension (This also is a sign of clenching of the jaw).

Another profound characteristic demonstrated here is the horizontal thinning of Mariah Carey's lips. This nonverbal display taken alone is highly indicative of anger - and when clustered with the other signals mentioned above, there can be no doubt of its presence.

Unfortunately unprecedented flooding continues in northern Louisiana. Fortunately, empathy and heroism abound.

In this dramatic and heroic rescue of a woman and her dog, an excellent example of an expression of fear can be seen.

Note how the corners of woman's mouth are pulled out (laterally) and down. Her mid-face is very tightened and her nostrils are flared. This nonverbal cluster is highly indicative of fear.

During 0:49 in this interview from Monday 16 May 2016 (image captured below), John Kasich, continues, "... endorsing is going to mean a lot, and frankly, ah, my wife and my daughters have watched this - and if I were to turn around today and endorse him [Trump], they'd be like, 'Why Dad?' - and that matters to me."

Just after he says, 'Why Dad?', Kasich displays the following nonverbal microexpression anger cluster of signals :

• Jaw Jut
• Glaring Eyes
• Tension in his Lower Eyelids 
• Mid-facial Tension
• Nostril Flaring

... but in this moment Governor Kasich is also displaying empathy with his wife and daughters - for in his verbal referencing of them, he's also momentarily stepping inside of their shoes and feeling their emotions - AND thus anticipating the anger he would expect them to have.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3467: Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Dies - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Associate Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia died last night in his sleep, apparently of natural causes.

Judge Scalia was not one to suffer fools. And it's an understatement to say he was very animated. 

The image included here shows Supreme Court Justice Scalia in a classic (though certainly not full) expression of anger.

The position of his eyebrows are lowered - but not extremely so. They are also not drawn together. Had they also been pulled together (and further lowered, particularly in the center [medially]), this would have further amplified his angry expression.

His eyelids are also tense. This is especially evident in his lower eyelids. His eyelids are also partially closed (consistent with mild to moderate anger).

His head is not fully turned toward the person of his attention. We tend not to turn fully toward those we don't like, don't respect or don't believe.

In this moment, Judge Scalia's mid-face has a considerable degree of muscle tension. This is very well seen in his "mustache area" as well as his with the flaring of his nostrils.

A strong hallmark of anger are thinned lips. At first glance, his lips in this photo may appear to some as an inward lip roll - but it's not. Because his jaw is clenched and thus his teeth are strongly together, his lips cannot roll completely inward - and his jaw clenching is a very strong signal of anger. This clenching is further evidenced by the dramatic dimpling of his chin. Moreover his jaw is thrust forward (aka a "Jaw Jut") although this is a bit more difficult to visualize given the angle of this image.

My condolences to Judge Scalia's family. Thank you sir for your service to your country. May you rest in peace.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3409: Debbie Wasserman Schultz's Reaction to Bernie Sander's Criticism of the DNC - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

One of the more interesting body language moments from Saturday night's Democratic Debate occurred when the camera was briefly directed at the audience and the DNC Chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz was shown during Bernie Sanders' explanation of the data breach (Full transcript of Debate) - during which he criticizes the Democratic National Committee's actions.

Beginning at 1:38, Sanders continues: Thirdly, what I have a really problem, and as you mentioned - this is a problem, I recognize it as a problem. But what the DNC did arbitrarily without discussing it with us is shut off our access to our information crippling our campaign. That is an egregious act. I'm glad that late last night, that was resolved.

 Fourthly, I work -- look forward to working with Secretary Clinton for an investigation, an independent investigation, about all of the breaches that have occurred from day one in this campaign, because I am not convinced that information from our campaign may not have ended up in her campaign. Don't know that.

Although the lighting and therefore the resolution is poor, enough nonverbal detail can be seen in her 4.7 second appearance (~2:02 - 2:07) to glean some valuable body language tells (all four of the following images are shown in sequence).

Note that Wasserman Schultz's head is tilted to her right. Together with the rest of her facial expression, this tilting speaks of or a relatively lower anxiety.

At this moment she is also showing subtle mid-facial tension. Her lower eyelid tension is the most notable signal of anger in this image.

A second later Ms. Wasserman Schultz straightens her neck - telegraphing a higher level of alertness and anxiety.

Her eyelids also display a prolonged blink - a signal of emotional processing and an attempt to suppress strong emotions.

Her mid-face tension has also significantly increased - with her lips have becoming stretched and thinned horizontally as her nostrils exhibiting a mild flaring.

While this image was captured mid-blink, it continues to show the DNC Chair's lower lid tension - but also a quite significantly increased horizontal tension of her lips/mouth.





Both of these dynamic facial configurations, when clustered, signal significant anger.

At the very end of her appearance (2:06), Wasserman Schultz's primary emotion of anger is diminishing while being somewhat replaced by that of regret.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3391: Tense Exchange Between Mike Allen and Chicago Mayor Emanuel - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel had a tense exchange earlier today with Politico's Mike Allen when Allen revealed Emanuel's family vacation plans to Cuba which the Mayor considered private.

From a body language perspective, this provides us with a good number of nonverbal tells indicative of moderate (and higher) levels of anger - several of which are discussed below.





At 1:43, Note Emanuel's Lips - they are thinned out and narrow. They are also configured in a highly characteristic
horizontal configuration. 









Although his nostrils are flared in the above image, a second later (1:44), the flaring is more pronounced.








It's also important to notice the dynamics of his "mustache area" (the region above the upper lip and below the nose) - for here it has grown more tense.





During 1:45, we can see Mayor Emanuel's chin jut forward. Moreover, the tension has also increased in his lower eyelids

This is a great example of a fear expression on Jordan Spieth. Just after he was awarded the trophy upon winning the U.S. Open yesterday - its top accidentally fell off. In this moment the corners of his mouth are classically pulled backwards and laterally as well as slightly downwards. The World's top-ranked golfer's jaw is also clenched. His mid-face and lower eyelids are tense. Flaring of his nostrils is pronounced. Because his head and neck are tilted down and forward, the tissue on front of his neck has adopted an evanescent pseudo-double (multiple) chin configuration (more so than simply bending forward creates). If his head were more upright, this "neck of fear" would have had a more common "tenting" and taught appearance.

How can you differentiate this lower-level social fear expression from that of a more threatening fear - such as would be seen with a physical danger scenario?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3194: U.S. Senator Thad Cochran Marries Longtime Aide Kay Webber - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This Memorial Weekend, Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran married his longtime (since 1981) assistant, Kay Webber. Rose Cochran - the senator's former wife, passed away in December 2014 after 13 years in a nursing home where, unfortunately, she suffered from dementia. In his effort to gain election to the U.S. Senate last year, Cochran's republican primary challenger, Chris McDaniel, accused Cochran of having an affair with Ms. Webber - an allegation which Cochran then denied.

The above image was taken in 2008 and although we don't know the full context of the moment - from a body language perspective it is very telling.

Senator Cochran is trying to smile - and many body language novices may indeed call this expression a "social smile" - however there's a mild (approximately a 3 on a 1-to-10 scale) yet significant fear display on his face. Do you see the specific nonverbal component this subtlety?

In stark contrast, Ms. Webber's face displays moderate disgust (about 4 out of 10). The cluster of her mid-face tension (above her upper lip and below her nose) as well as the flaring of her nostrils is unmistakable.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2912: Gerald Ford Pardoning of Richard Nixon - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, addressed the nation 40 years ago today and announced his resignation. He officially left office at noon the next day. Nixon was flying over Missouri when Gerald Ford took his oath of office.

On 8 September 1974, President Ford addressed the nation (see video below). These images show the moment when Ford signed proclamation 4311 which gave Nixon a full and unconditional pardon from crimes committed related to the Watergate Scandal or any other crime committed while in office as U.S. President.

Although this photo above is of lower resolution, you can note that Ford's jaw is clenched and the muscles covering the front of his chin are contracted and dimpled (1:24 in the video below). Moreover, his "mustache area" (between the upper lip and nose) is tightened. Simultaneous nasal flaring is also present.

Had Ford's jaw not been clenched - his lips - which are partially rolling inwards (ergo a truncated "Inward Lip Roll") would have been fully expressed. Because of his jaw clenching however, his Inward Lip Roll (ILR) could not form in its entirety. The "Peri-Lip Bulge" which can be seen below Ford's lower lip is essentially only seen in the presence of a clenched jaw.

The nonverbal cluster context displayed here - tells us that President Ford was both angry as well as trying to suppress both this outward display and the inward crescendo of his anger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2899: Jennifer Lawrence, Katniss Everdeen, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I" Trailer and Recognizing Facial Components of Fear-Surprise (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Most people would say that Jennifer Lawrence is a very talented actress. Although her appearance in this trailer for "The Hungergames: Mockingjay - Part I" is brief - it is has significant impact.

It is amazing the percentage of people who are unable to recognize moderate facial expression - let alone mild or subtle scenarios. The image below is captured during the 0:52 mark of the trailer. Ms. Lawrence's eyebrows are drawn together and subtly and centrally elevated. There is also a subtle central forehead contraction (CFC) present.

What is particularly noticeable in this moment are Lawrence's upper eyelids - for they are moderately retracted - and in this fear-surprise cluster they are the strongest component.

Katniss Everdeen's nostrils are mildly flared and her "mustache area" (the area in between the nose and the upper lip and termed so regardless of gender) is mild-moderately tense. Her jaw is tensed and stiff - with her lips configured in a mild surprise.

Although in most "real-life" scenarios, one would expect more forehead contraction and eyebrow elevation, Jennifer Lawrence does a very good job projecting the emotion of fear-surprise.

When a person is judged to be a "good actor" - what we really mean is that they deliver their lines with great vocal qualities (aka paralanguage - such as pitch, cadence, rhythm, volume, crescendo/decrescendo, pauses, etc.) - along with spot-on body language. All three of these components must be in unison and consistent with the emotion and scene. Too often these ingredients are considerably disparate - and yet they pass for "acting".
