Body Language Analysis No. 4402: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez grills Mark Zuckerberg during Congressional Testimony — Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Wednesday 23 October 2019, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before the House Financial Services Committee. He was questioned regarding Facebook’s plan to create a cryptocurrency (known as Libra). Zuckerberg also was asked questions regarding election security. What follows is an analysis of a crucial portion of Mr. Zuckerberg's testimony — specifically with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

As Representative Maxine Waters says (beginning at 4:18:17), "The gentlewoman from New York, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is recognized for five minutes" — Mr. Zuckerberg immediately looks down to his right (gaze toward this direction/quadrant to is highly correlative with deception, shame, guilt, and sadness/grief).

The Facebook CEO also clenches his jaw (4:18:19). This is caused by an adrenaline surge — here associated with Zuckerberg's anxiety and anger.

He also displays a significant tightening of his mid-facial muscles - specifically in thinning of his lips, and with flaring of his nostrils. This nonverbal cluster signals anger.

In this moment, Zuckerberg is experiencing a high level of cognitive-emotional dissonance — simultaneous fear and anger.

Notice too, that as Representative Waters said, "Ms." ("Ms. Ocasio-Cortez"), Zuckerberg momentarily elevated slightly off his chair (4:18:19). If you're self-aware and honest, you'll recall a similar experience. This butt-adjustment movement (often, but not always accompanied by a slight elevation in one's chair) — particularly when coupled with the above mentioned nonverbal changes, signals a sudden increase anal sphincter tone (Yes, you read that correctly). As one's anal sphincter muscle tightens, the other (external) buttocks muscles tighten too (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus). This dynamic is secondary to fear.

Moreover, along with this sudden increase in anal sphincter tone, another change simultaneously occurs in men. It's a cremasteric-related reflex. In plain speak, when men get frightened, their testicles retract (pull closer to their body). Of course, we can't see this, but we know it's happening as Zuckerberg lifts off his chair.

Zuckerberg then reaches for his water bottle. But curiously, a split second PRIOR to drinking we see a hard swallow. The water is needed because his throat was dry. And his throat was dry because he was nervous (4:18:22). He was nervous because he was contemplating lying on camera before congress.

As Representative Ocasio-Cortez says, "appreciate" (4:18:28 / "I think you of all people can appreciate"). We see Mr. Zuckerberg display a Tongue-in-Cheek display.

The tongue in cheek dynamic may indicate several different though-emotions depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered - i.e., "I just won", sadness/grief, anger, "I gotcha" (you were caught), projecting sexual interest, or deception.

Notice how widely Mr. Zuckerberg's eyelids are opened here. This indicates an adrenaline surge. His forehead is also considerably elevated (although this is difficult to see due to extensive Botox treatment).

Beginning at 4:18:46, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez asks, "Ah, Mr. Zuckerberg, what year and month did you personally first become aware of Cambridge Analytica?"

Immediately thereafter, during 4:18:53 - 4:18:54, Mr. Zuckerberg displays a sudden series of rapid blinking. Blinking is a non-specific signal of heightened anxiety. It can also be a manifestation of decreased eye contact and blocking (i.e., "I don't want to look at you").

A second later (4:18:54), Zuckerberg then displays what is known as a Loose Tongue Jut. A loose tongue jut indicates the thought-emotions of: "I've been caught", "I've been bad", "I've done a foolish thing".

Although not a required component of a loose tongue jut, the blink coinciding with Zuckerberg's example seen here, acts as an amplifier for these underlying thought-feelings.

Zuckerberg then immediately begins to say a drawn-out, "ahhh" 4:18:54 — note as he's saying this, his lips wrap tightly around his upper and lower teeth in the initial stages of a display known as an Inward Lip Roll. This particular inward lip roll is also stretched out in time (duration).

An inward lip roll is a sign that the psyche is trying to suppress the growth of both the emotions (inward) as well as the corresponding facial expressions (outward).

A split-second later we see the end-point of the typical, more fully manifested, inward lip roll (4:18:55) as he says (first of the two stutters), "I'm" ("ahhh, I'm not, I'm not sure of the exact — time but it was probably — around the time when it became public. I think it was around March of Twenty-Eighteen. I, I could be wrong though."

Zuckerberg's stuttering throughout his testimony is a nonspecific but highly reliable signal of his anxiety (It's, of course, important to exclude stuttering as a speech disorder).

A second later (4:18:56) he displays a highly characteristic facial expression wherein his whole forehead (as a unit) moves downward - while, simultaneously, his inner (central/medial) forehead is contracted together and is pulling upward. This opposite direction-dynamic is a red flag.

Also, crucially, there is a subtle yet profoundly significant mouth smile - that's being suppressed. Do you see it? His feigned concern?

Zuckerberg's sudden head jerk-tilt together with the suppressed smile is forced and feigned. It occurs just as he says his second, "not" ("... I'm not, I'm not sure of the exact time..."). Note this is not a head shake (i.e., not a side-to-side, "no"), but rather a quick jerk-tilt of the head and neck.

You may have also notice that Zuckerberg looked away from Rep. Ocasio-Cortez - AND closed his eyes as he answered. Both of these are manifestations of decreased eye contact (correlative with deception).

Beginning at 4:19:07, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez asks, "When did Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg become aware of Cambridge Analytica?"

Mr. Zuckerberg answers, "I, I don't know off the top of my head."

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez responds, "You don't know."

As Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is saying, "You don't know", notice Zuckerberg's mouth. His jaw thrusts forward while at the same time his lips also pinch forward in a subtle Forward Lip Purse (4:19:15). This is a common cluster facial tell for Zuckerberg.

The Jaw Jut is a manifestation of an adrenaline surge (often, although not always due to anger).

The forward lip purse tells us that the Facebook CEO is withholding information — a signal of a clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. It also is a sign that *he believes* he has a good chance of success with his undisclosed plan. It also shows us that *he believes* he's an alpha relative to anyone else in the room.

During this Forward Lip Purse/Jaw Jut Cluster, Zuckerberg continued his significantly high blinking frequency (heightened anxiety and diminished eye contact with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez).

The next question (beginning at 4:19:15) Rep. Ocasio-Cortez asks is, "And did anyone on your leadership team know about Cambridge Analytica prior to the initial report by The Guardian on December 11th, 2015?"

Zuckerberg's lips once again pull tightly over his upper and lower teeth (4:19:24). This dynamic demonstrates great hesitancy in wanting to talk. His psyche (and lips) are trying to hold his words in his mouth.

Before he answers, Zuckerberg's tongue once again juts out (another Loose Tongue Jut) — in a second nonverbal confessional display of: "I've been caught", "I've been bad", "I've done a foolish thing".

A split-second after this tongue jut, did you notice Zuckerberg again elevated off his chair? (displaying another, more subtle, butt adjustment/sphincter tightening/cremasteric fear reflex). Please watch the video, as the still images do not capture this dynamic.

Zuckerberg then proceeds to say, "Ah, congresswoman, I [stretched-out 'I'], I believe so — that some folks were, were ah [pause, blink] tracking it internally."

During 4:19:30, he stutters and pauses. Then, a split second after he says, "ah" ("that some folks were, were ah"), he blinks. This is Zuckerberg hesitating to disclose information. He's in a moment of cognitive-emotional dissonance. He's not sure what to say.

Zuckerberg's use of the word, "folks" in this context is theatrical. He's trying to appear disarming, humble, and simple — as if these, "folks" were just kinda moseying along and free to do what they wanted.

Just after he said, "internally", Zuckerberg once again displays the cluster of eyelid closure (blocking/decreased eye contact/anxiety), forward lip purse (clandestine plan/undisclosed disagreement/I'm alpha and you're beta), together with a jaw jut (adrenaline surge), (4:19:31).

Just after Rep. Ocasio-Cortez asks, "When was this issue discussed with your board member, Peter Thiel?", Zuckerberg's eyelids opened very widely (adrenaline surge from anger), his lips thinned (anger), and his jaw jutted out once more (adrenaline surge) (4:19:46).

He says, "Ah, Congresswoman, I don't, I don't know that off the top of my head", and displays yet another cluster of jaw jutting, lip pursing, and eyelid closing (4:19:51).

Zuckerberg's repeated use of the colloquial, "I don't know that off the top of my head", is another attempt to insert plausible deniability.

After he attempts to clarify his answer regarding the question about Peter Thiel, Zuckerberg again significant displayed anger (4:20:05).

Zuckerberg's verbal response is full of stuttering and misspeaking: "Well Congresswoman, I'm — sure we, we discuss [sic] it after — it ah, after, after we, we were aware of what happened." Note also the wiggle room Zuckerberg allowed by saying, "I'm sure we discuss [sic] it" — rather than, "Yes. We did discuss it".

After he finishes his answer regarding Facebook board member Peter Thiel, Zuckerberg looks down to his right (with both his eyes and his head/neck) — the quadrant associated with deception, shame, guilt, and sadness/grief).

You'll note that Zuckerberg uses the title, "Congresswoman" quite often. On its surface, this formality may initially appear to some people as a simple way to show respect (as of course, he should) — but he uses it much too often. When used excessively, such a spoken title has the opposite effect. It's patronizing and passive-aggressive. Also, if he were sincere, he would add Representative Ocasio-Cortez's name after her title. Moreover, saying "Congresswoman" repeatedly is also a method for Zuckerberg to steal a couple extra seconds in which to formulate his answer.

SUMMARY: Based on Mark Zuckerberg's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior displayed during this portion of his recent testimony before congress, with very high probability, he lied regarding Cambridge Analytica. With high probability, Zuckerberg also lied about Sheryl Sandberg's and Peter Thiel's knowledge of Cambridge Analytica.

Body Language Analysis No. 4401 Nancy Pelosi's and Donald Trump's 'Meltdown Meeting' — Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

When a person has little or no empathy — and/or when they're far from their emotional baseline, their ability to interpret how others will view an event becomes dramatically distorted. Rarely has this behavioral axiom been better exemplified than last Wednesday at the White House. President Trump and members of his cabinet met with congressional leaders to discuss Turkey, Syria, and the Kurdish people.

After Donald Trump engaged in ad hominem attacks toward Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer left the meeting. After the meeting, Donald Trump tweeted out the above image which will no doubt become historic.

The photo quickly went viral. And the collective Body Language was profoundly telling — just not in the way Donald Trump believed it to be. It backfired on the President in ways that cannot begin to be quantified.

What follows is a detailed nonverbal analysis of this now-famous photo, with multiple cropped close-ups.

Notice President Trump's orientation to both Speaker Pelosi and the table. Both his chair and Trump's torso are leaning away from Pelosi. For him, this configuration is highly unusual. Trump's almost always leaning forward — whether he's seated or standing.

Moreover, the President's hands are hidden beneath the table. This too is not at all Trump's normal behavior. When he's seated at table or a desk, his hands are most often on its surface — otherwise, they're folded across his chest. What we see here is rare for Trump. Hiding one's hands is a red flag for withdrawal, a need for protection, a hidden agenda, and dishonesty.

Donald Trump's medial (inner) eyebrows are vectored downward. The expression on his face is an amalgam of both anger and fear. Donald Trump's body language is projecting a significantly beta and protective emotional tone. He's fearful and withdrawing while telegraphing significant dishonesty.

Look back at the full picture. Notice how Trump repositioned his glass forward on the table? He frequently does this with any objects placed in front of him. This is a manifestation of narcissistic personality disorder. Narcissists routinely force themselves into others' personal spaces and take up more room in common spaces.

In contrast, Nancy Pelosi's body language is hyper-alpha. She's not only standing up — she's the only one standing. Pelosi's whole body is leaning forward — her thighs against the table.

Nancy Pelosi is pointing with her most powerful finger (the index finger aka forefinger) on her dominant hand. Her arm is moderately extended — again, over the table. The remainder of her fingers and her thumb are retracted (amplifying the finger's power). Speaker Pelosi is pointing just over the head of President Trump, seated directly across the table from her. Pelosi's eyebrows and her forehead are elevated. While it is expressing emphasis, her face is not conveying significant anger, nor does she have an expression indicative of yelling/high volume in this moment.

Later that day, Speaker Pelosi recounted what she had been saying to the President when this image was captured: "With you, all roads lead to Putin".

On Trump's side of the table, nearly everyone is either sitting away from the table or looking downward with their hands clasped (frustration and beta). We also see a Gestalt theme, with multiple hands being hidden.

Three out of five of the men sitting to Trump's right have their head, neck, and torsos bending forward. Quite notably, NONE of these three men are looking up. This is consistent with shame, sadness, and/or deception.

Immediately to Trump's right is General Mark Milley — the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Along with his head, neck, and torso leaning forward — his jaw is clenched, which is signaling an adrenaline surge. He's not only looking down, but his eyebrows are also dramatically lowered. His lips are thinned (anger). The corner of his mouth is angled downward (indicating regret and/or sadness). His fingers are tightly intertwined (frustration).

To General Milley's right is Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell. His torso is leaning backward, away from the table, although his hands appear to be on the table and intertwined or clasped (view mostly occluded). McConnell's face is not visible.

Seated to Senator McConnell's right is Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan. He's also leaning forward, looking down. His hands are clasped. His mouth is foreshortened with the left corner turned downward (Sadness, Regret).

To John Sullivan's right is House Minority Whip, Steve Scalise (R-LA). He's leaning far forward (particularly his head and neck), and looking down and appears to be writing.

The man seated to Scalise's right is White House counsel Pat Cipollone (to Trump's far-right, at the end of the table). He's sitting back with his torso away from the table. Although our view of him is limited, his arms appear to be crossed (defensive, close-minded, protective) and he seems to be looking at Nancy Pelosi.

Immediately to Trump's left is Defense Secretary Mark Esper. His torso, neck, and head are upright — the only person on Trump's side of the table with a semi-engaged posture. However, his hands are clasped. Esper's behavior, both here and at other times he's appeared in photos or speaking, is significantly robotic. Behaviorally, he strives to live in the middle of the Bell curve. He avoids extremes. Mark Esper is hyper-contained and prides himself on this characteristic. Esper's jaw is clenched too — but not nearly as tight as General Milley's.

To Esper's left is House Minority Leader, Kevin McCarthy. He was captured during an extended blink in this photo. His eyebrows are mildly lowered, however, his forehead is mildly elevated (this opposite direction dynamic of these two adjacent tissues is a red flag). His torso is also leaning backward - pulled away from the desk in another variation of non-engagement. Intriguingly, McCarthy's hands are mostly hidden too — with his fingers beneath the table, with his thumbs hooked on its surface — whilst he appears to be pushing back, away from the table. His mouth is mildly regretful. McCarthy is blocking Trump's behavior. He is trying to tolerate the situation in which he finds himself. He's mentally pushing back. He does NOT want to be there.

Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary, is seated to McCarthy's left. Like Trump, he's also positioned his hands beneath the table. This is a troublesome configuration for anyone in authority to adopt during a meeting. Barring a physical condition, individuals who sit with their hands beneath the table in such scenarios are very often hiding something. It's deception tell — particularly if a question is asked, and, as they answer verbally, their hands retract into hiding.

At the far end of the table — and slightly on Pelosi's half, is White House legislative affairs director Eric Ueland. His eyes are also closed. It's statistically unlikely that both he and Kevin McCarthy would be both naturally caught blinking. Thus, this blinking is behavioral and of longer duration. They are blocking and distancing themselves from the situation.

Note Eric Ueland's hands are also beneath the table — leaning backward with his torso, withdrawn from the table. It's intriguing that Mr. Ueland, who has a relative power seat (at the end of a long table, away from the door), has chosen to orient himself on Speaker Pelosi's side of the table rather than on Trump's hemisphere of the room.

To Eric Ueland's right (closer to Pelosi) are Representatives Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), Liz Cheney (R-WY), and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ). Although Ms. Cheney's and Mr. Menendez's face are partially occluded, it's clear that all three of these House members have their hands to their mouths. This hand-to-mouth dynamic is a common body language configuration to adopt when one is witnessing an argument — but not directly participating in it. These two Democrats and one Republican are nonverbally in a state of emotional processing — in cognitive-emotional dissonance. Their intellectual brains are aware of a dramatic confrontation — while their emotional brains are trying to fully process its ramifications. This hand-to-mouth signal also conveys our desire to see a person (who's getting over-emotional) calm their temper.

It's also quite notable that Engel, Cheney, and Menedez all have at least one of their respective arms/elbows/hands on top of — not beneath the table. This signals more engagement and honesty compared with people whose hands are beneath the table (conveying withdraw, need for protection, hidden agenda, and dishonesty).

Seated immediately to Speaker Pelosi's left is House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer. He is the only Democrat in this image sitting back from the table. His eyelids are also closed (third person in this photo) — probably also in the midst of an extended blink. Again, desiring to psychologically block the behavior of the President.

Immediately to Nancy Pelosi's right is Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Senator Schumer is leaning forward and also looking down. Although he's possibly reading the document in front of him, it's much more likely that he doesn't want to look at the President shouting. Both of Schumer's arms are on the table (engaged).

Jack Reed (D-RI) is seated to Schumer's right. Like Reps. Engel, Cheney, and Menedez — Reed also has both arms on top of the table (more engaged) but with one hand to his mouth (again, in this context, it's a signal of both emotional processing and a desire for calm tempers/dialog/discussion — rather than anger/yelling/ad hominem attacks).

Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) is not only leaning back in his chair (disengaged) with his hands and arms beneath the table (hiding, like a turtle who is pulled into his shell) — but his hands are in a seated fig-leaf configuration. A fig-leaf (whether used seated or standing) conveys significant beta mindset, vulnerability, and a need for protection.

Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), seated in the lower left corner of the image (blurred, closest to the camera) has an expression combination of disgust, a suppressed smile, and impatience. He's leaning forward and it appears he has both hands on the table with his fingers intertwined (frustrated).

SUMMARY: The body language is profound in this image. Most of the Republicans in the room — including President Trump have hyper-beta emotional tones. They're withdrawn, protective, projecting a hidden agenda, and suggesting dishonest intent.

General Mark Milley, whose political beliefs are not publicly known, bears special attention. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is feeling a combination of anger, shame, frustration, regret, and sadness.

In contrast, most of the Democrats in the room are engaged and in disbelief at the President's behavior. With the exception of Nancy Pelosi, they're not hyper-alpha but alpha/assertive in their mindsets.

Nancy Pelosi is hyper-alpha, although not hyper-angry, in this moment. If we suddenly developed amnesia and we weren't aware of their relative elected positions of power, we would think that Nancy Pelosi was indeed the President — and that Trump was in the midst of being fired.

Body Language Analysis No. 4400: Trump speaks with First All-Female Astronaut Spacewalk — Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, President Trump spoke with Astronaut Jessica Meir, Ph.D. during her extravehicular activity (EVA) with Astronaut Christina Koch. This was the first-ever all-female EVA in history. During the initial portion of this conversation, Donald Trump spoke in error, saying that it was the "first ever female spacewalk". Astronaut Dr. Jessica Meir tactfully and humbly corrected Mr. Trump as she continued their conversation. She did not want to take credit for something she hadn't done. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of Donald Trump during this brief, but crucial portion of their dialog.

DONALD TRUMP (continuing at 1:12): ... They're conducting the first — ever female spacewalk to replace an exterior part of the Space Station ...

ASTRONAUT JESSICA MEIR (beginning at 2:01): Well — thank you [pause]. First — first of all, we don't want to take too much credit because there have been many other female spacewalkers before us. This is just the first time that there have been two women outside at the same time.

As he was initially speaking to the Astronauts, President Trump had had his torso, head, and neck flexed down and forward – directed toward the microphone on the table.

Just after Astronaut Meir says, "First — first of all, we don't want to take too much credit because there have been many other female spacewalkers", at 2:11, Trump immediately looks up. His eyebrows and forehead are already elevated before he repositions his head. Note how his eyebrows are partially closed, with a 'droopy' appearance. The eyelids vs. eyebrow-forehead complex are moving in opposite directions in this moment — which is always a body language alarm. There is also a mild amount of disgust displayed on Trump's mid-face. This nonverbal cluster is strongly projecting the thought-emotion, "I can't believe she just corrected me!"

A split second later, the President immediately closes his eyes in a prolonged blink (2:11) in a classic example of distancing behavior. This dynamic is a manifestation of arrogance and castigation. People in power will often close their eyes just prior to and during the first few seconds of a reprimand. It also serves the dual purpose of the psyche trying to collect itself, trying to prevent an outburst — for often, as is the case here, the president is in a public forum, and must try and refrain his criticism. However, these signals are tells, aka "leaks" for his true thoughts and feelings.

Simultaneously, the President interlaces his fingers. In this context, this hand-finger dynamic is a strong indicator of frustration.

He then leans his torso and looks his right, nonverbally saying, "Can you BELIEVE this woman?" His eyelids remain partially closed — continuing to scold Dr. Meir while projecting mild disgust.

The President then shows us something he rarely does on camera — he touches his face (2:13 - 2:16). Moreover, he does so in a very particular manner. With his right middle finger extended, Donald Trump first touches the upper part of his nose, between his eyes. Notice his other fingers are, to varying degrees, partially contracted (flexed).

Maintaining his extended middle finger, he then rubs upward to his forehead.

... and then back down again. Notice his index finger (forefinger) retracts (flexes) even further, placing his middle finger in a more isolated configuration.

Trump then traces with his middle finger over his right eyebrow ...

... onward to his temple

... and he finishes this finger trace touching the upper portion of his ear.

This gesture is very much what it looks like — Donald Trump is giving Astronaut Jessica Meir the finger while she's walking in space. He's nonverbally telling her to 'fuck off'. In his mind he is cursing very loudly and consciously — but his body language is a subconscious manifestation of this internal shouting. The louder our inner screaming grows, the less aware we are of what our faces and bodies our doing.

If you weren't paying close attention, you'd miss it

This is an example of one of many different subtypes of what is known as a Partial Emblematic Slip. It's termed 'Partial' because it's a gesture which is not being held in its typical, elevated, very deliberate, hand-and-finger on full display — usually in front of and on a level with the user's chest, neck, or face. Notice Trump's psyche camouflages this maneuver by maintaining his forefinger (index finger) partially extended.

It's labeled as 'Emblematic' because its a highly specific gesture (illustrator), with its meaning universally recognized: "Fuck You! or "Fuck off!" (although there are many other emblems that are regional or local, this one is known worldwide).

Its nomenclature includes the 'Slip' descriptor, because it's a subconsciously generated nonverbal act. It 'leaks', thus telegraphing a person's true emotions despite what is being said.

As Astronaut Meir stated, there have been many other female spacewalkers. The first woman ever to walk in space (EVA) was Soviet Cosmonaut, Svetlana Savitskaya on 25 July 1984. The first American Woman to Walk in Space was Kathryn Sullivan on 11 October 1984.

SUMMARY: The President of the United States, gave Astronaut Jessica Meir the finger today, during her historic spacewalk. Trump's nonverbal 'Fuck off!' gesture was a result of his anger at her polite and humble correction of a verbal mistake he had just made. During a world-wide televised event, Dr. Meir did not want to take credit for something she had not accomplished. Trump displayed his middle finger obscenity subconsciously — in the form of a partial emblematic slip.

Body Language Analysis No. 4399: Donald Trump — Stalling, Protection, Deception, Contempt — Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

In this image, Trump is holding his hand to his ear. It's a common gesture which, on its surface says, "Please speak louder / I can't quite hear what you're saying". Presidents have performed this act for years — Ronald Reagan used it on nearly a daily basis. Of course, it's possible that he may not have heard the question clearly. But, more often than not, it's primarily used as a stalling technique so Trump will have a few seconds longer in order to formulate his answer.

If we look closer, we can see Trump is holding his right hand to his left ear. To accomplish this dynamic, he must reach his arm and hand across his torso. It's possible that Trump is holding something in his left hand, although, he rarely carries anything. What's dramatically more likely, is that Trump feels threatened by the nature of the question and this nonverbal configuration affords him more emotional cover/comfort. Reaching across one's body is a protective posture — a truncated form of self-hugging.

While Trump's facial expression in this moment, is for him relatively unanimated — it's far from neutral. There's tension in his mid-face, his eyebrows are vectored downward and his eyelids are partially closed. There's significant muscular contraction of his lower eyelids. This facial expression indicates critical evaluation and suppressed anger. The President is also displaying subtle contempt on his right mid-face (a subtle snarl-like expression). He doesn't like the question that's being posed.

The etiology of the president's rhinorrhea (runny nose) is not publicly known — however, it's chronic and unrelated to the other components of this nonverbal display.

SUMMARY: In this moment, President Trump is, with high probability, hearing the question being asked, but he's stalling for time. He needs the extra seconds to formulate an answer — which strongly suggests deception. Moreover, Donald Trump feels threatened by the subject of the question and feels the need to protect himself and/or cover/hide his answer. The President also has anger and contempt for the question and/or the person asking it.

Body Language Analysis No. 4398: Mohammed bin Salman regarding the Murder of Jamal Khashoggi ("60 Minutes" Interview) — Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last week on 60 Minutes, Mohammed bin Salman was interviewed by Norah O'Donnell. What follows is a crucial portion of that interview evaluated in detail with nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis.

NORAH O'DONNELL: Did you order the murder of Jamal Khashoggi?

MOHAMMED BIN SALMAN: Absolutely [drawn-out], ah-um — [pause] — not.

Immediately after Ms. O'Donnell asks the question, "Did you order the murder of Jamal Khashoggi?" — when the camera switches to him, Mohammed bin Salman does not have eye contact with her or the camera. He's looking down. More specifically, he's looking down to his left. This is the quadrant to which most people look when they're formulating an answer.

Why does the Saudi Prince have to think about this simple question regarding such an important matter? There should be no thinking. There should be no planning of sentences or syntax.

Mohammed bin Salman's lack of eye contact here is profoundly telling and cannot be over-emphasized. When being asked a direct question, particularly a yes-or-no question, the presence of (and nuance of) eye contact is the most crucial component when separating truth from deception. While, importantly, eye-contact is not expected to be constant or staring — during this crucial portion of his answer, his lack of eye contact screams deception.

The Crown Prince also shakes his head side-to-side (No) as he takes in a deep breath. Mohammed bin Salman then holds that breath in a Valsalva-type variation — thus exerting elevated intrathoracic pressure. In this context, this physiology indicates significantly elevated anxiety and it's highly indicative of deception.

Mohammed bid Salman then blinks twice within a second — the latter being of longer duration and a deeper blink (complete eyelid closure). Two seconds later he again begins rapid blinking.

The Saudi Prince then hand-shrugs with his right thumb pointing up. The camera angle did not permit a view of his left hand. This particular thumbs-up illustrator is an example of a Partial Emblematic Slip. In detail, an Emblem is a universally recognized nonverbal signal (A thumbs-up dynamic is a universally recognized gesture of approval). It's Partial, because it's not presented in a fully-expressed manner, but rather in a lower-height and short-duration mode. And, it's a Slip, because it's a tell — or leakage of feelings he truly has, yet is trying to suppress — it slips out.

Mohammed bin Salman, despite his extensive coaching and preparation for this interview, let his true thought-emotions slip in this split second — via his thumb. His body language is saying, "Yes, I did". Intriguingly, this affirmation signal comes just prior to him saying the word, "Absolutely".

During the last portion of the word, "Absolutely" — as well as during his "ah-um" and also during his pause, Mohammed bin Salman can be seen displaying a suppressed smile. This is an example of what is known as Duping Delight (Ekman). It signals that the speaker is feeling true joy-happiness in his belief that he has fooled his audience.

It's important to note that, that what action delight the perpetrator, may very well not delight onlookers (as is the case here, of course). Moreover, those displaying duping delight may not be as convincing in their camouflage of deception as they believe.

Can you imagine being innocent of committing a murder or ordering that murder and having even an iota of a smile on your face in your denial? Smiling out-of-context is always a telling red flag.

After his stutter/ah-um and his pause, Mohammed bid Salman then says the word, "No". As he speaks it, his forehead and eyebrows elevate, while his eyelids simultaneously move downward subtly. The opposing directional dynamic of these two closely juxtaposed facial tissues — as he is denying (saying the word "No") is highly correlative with lying.

A monumentally important tell is displayed toward the end of the pause, and when he is saying, "No" — The Crown Prince stops his side-to-side head movement and thrusts his head and neck forward. When his words are saying, "No", his body language ceases to agree. This nonverbal-verbal disparity dynamic is a blaring siren of deception.

He then avoids eye contact again looking down to his left —

— and exhibits additional rapidly blinking.

The Crown Prince's choice of words here are also quite noteworthy. His first word, upon being asked this question, should not be one of affirmation — rather it should be that of negation.

He also draws out the word, "Absolutely". Moreover, he inserts an "ah" immediately followed by a brief "um", and a long pause prior to saying, "No".

Why would an innocent person need to pause before saying, "No"?

In full, he answers, "Absolutely [drawn out] ah-um [pause] not".

Of course, the translator did not insert these critical paralanguage (statement analysis) details as he translated, and his omission completely changes the meaning. You don't have to speak Arabic — or even watch the video, you can simply listen — the Saudi Prince did not speak with conviction or confidence.

SUMMARY: Mohammed bin Salman's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior during this crucial portion of this interview indicates that, with extremely high probability, he did order the killing of Washington Post journalist and US resident, Jamal Khashoggi.
