Body Language Analysis No. 4116: Carey Mulligan and American Accents - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Carey Mulligan was recently a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live promoting her recent film, Mudbound which takes place in rural Mississippi just after WWII.  Among other things, the English actor spoke about performing with American accents. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

JIMMY KIMMEL (beginning at 0:03): I mentioned it to Idris Elba last night, and I'm gonna say the same thing to you - it always [stutter] amazes me and impresses me when, when you're from England - you come over here and do our accent so well.

CAREY MULLIGAN: Oh, thank you - well § see the film first ...

During 0:14, right after she says, "Oh, thank you - well" - and just before she says, "see the film first", Carey Mulligan displays a classic unilateral combination of both a:

• Neck of Fear (pulling laterally and down)
• Mouth of Fear (with tension and a "tenting-up" of the superficial neck muscles
  [platysma and the sternocleidomastoid])

A split second earlier (also during 0:14), Ms. Mulligan was repositioning in her chair (a common anxiety tell).

She also displayed a suppressed smile - simultaneously as her eyebrows pulled together and were vectored downward. This nonverbal cluster displayed her questioning/disbelief/emotional discomfort with Kimmel's compliment.

A moment later, during 0:16 - 0:17, Carey displays a false-adjustment of her jacket/shirt. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is general anxiety indicator.

 

MULLIGAN (beginning at 0:32): I think for someone from Gr-, I think if you do Southern, you just slow everything, you just talk very slowly Ω ... I think?

During 0:37, Just after she says, "... you just talk very slowly ...", Carey Mulligan displays another fantastic example of a Unilateral Neck of Fear - as well as a Mouth of Fear.
 

And again, just after she says, "... Oh, it was my strategy - I don't know ...", Ms. Mulligan displays her third example of a one-sided Neck of Fear/Mouth of Fear cluster - along with a suppressed smile (0:40).

Notice her left-hand gesture (Illustrator) - which was partially palm down (and an alpha-beta hybrid) - during 0:35 - 0:38, flips to a palm-up configuration during 0:39 (thus projecting a more beta mindset as she says, "... I think?").

Summary: Care must always be taken to never interpret body language signals in isolation. If we only looked at Carey Mulligan's right neck and mouth - we may very well interpret her emotion as fear (e.g., pure fear/physical fear/deep visceral fear). Yet if notice that her displays are almost completely on her right side - and we see her other accompanying facial and body signs in her nonverbal cluster (e.g., suppressed smile, disbelief/questioning, some subtle alpha displays, etc.) - we can see that her fear is not deep - it's not physical fear - but rather that of a milder, social embarrassment fear.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2654: Carey Mulligan on Jimmy Kimmel - Body Language Part II (VIDEO, PHOTO)

In her recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live", Carey Mulligan touts her most recent film "Inside Llewyn Davis" (Coen Brothers). She also gives us a great body language cluster - which among other things is correlative with a High Sincerity Quotient.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The image above however, was captured from this video. In the original, the talented (yet very human) actor tilts her head to her right (exposing a greater portion of her neck to Kimmel), looks slightly upwards and focused at a distance. The neck tilt demonstrates, particularly coincident with this "far away", upward gaze signifies an honest vulnerability and indicates a sincere emotional tone.

She also scratches her right arm with her left hand. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) amounts to what is a partial arm cross. The nonverbal cluster occurs when she is contrasting "American Christmases" with Christmases in her home city and country (London, England). Her unilateral arm cross strongly suggests she has spent the holiday season in far from home and doesn't care for it.

Carey Mulligan is promoting her most recent film "Inside Llewyn Davis" and was featured in a video clip from a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live". At 1:30 the dialog continues....

Kimmel: "What are you going to do f-, do you go back to England for the Holidays?"

Mulligan: "I do, yeah, I go back to London."

Kimmel: "That seems like it is the best place to have Chr-, the most Christmassy place to have Christmas."

Mulligan: "I can't, yeah, I can't really ... The American Christmases seem [surprise at 1:45] Not, No offense."

Kimmel: "Oh, [Laughs] uh, oh."

Mulligan: "Awful."

Kimmel: [Continues Laughter]

At 1:45 Mulligan manifests a blunted microexpression of surprise with fear. They are blunted due to of Botox over-treatment on the upper half of her upper face. Here we see that not only does her forehead minimally contract (her eyebrows do shoot upwards for a fraction of a second - yet there are no transient and otherwise normal-for-context, co-existing furrows on her forehead), but her eyelids barely open wider than they were a moment before.

This is a very muted surprise response particularly for an actor and considerably inhibits her (or anyone's) ability for full or even mild emotional expression.

Two tenths of a second later.

Her neck tightens moderately ("Neck of fear").

At 1:46

Hands with palms towards the audience with a downward motion in a subconscious attempt to mollify offense to the audience. 

Tightly clenched intertwined fingers in a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) display of high anxiety.

Note the color of her hands, forearms and face from a transient change in blood flow.

A sincere smile with increased blushing of her face is seen at 1:48. True (sincere) surprise is virtually always followed by (or coexistent with) one or two other emotions. Here is embarrassment is seen and above we saw fear manifested.

Mulligan's bilateral "Hair Adjust Behind Ear" body language is commonly seen during moments when the alpha qualities are being dialed-up and assertiveness is being engaged.

Here embarrassment continues.

If surprise is not rapidly followed by a second emotion, there is a very high probability the surprise is at least false (fake) or exaggerated.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2395: Carey Mulligan on Jimmy Fallon on The Great Gatsby & Acting with Leonardo DiCaprio

Carey Mulligan who plays Daisy Buchanan in the most recent rendition of "The Great Gatsby" is featured recently on Late Night Jimmy Fallon. She is a very talented actress, yet of course she is human. Her body language betrays her true emotions - as it also does for those of us who do not act professionally for a living (However acting transpires all around us - and constantly. How good are you at spotting it?). Her anxiety is demonstrated by a number of nonverbal tells here. One way the beautiful actress displays this is exampled in the repeated MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) of her rubbing her thighs & her knees (e.g. 0:30 - 0:42). At other times she can be seen rubbing the arm of her chair (e.g. 0:17 - 0:19). This is a type of "MAP surrogate", where an object is substituted for part of the body. Such surrogate self-touching is indeed a similar behavior and although slightly masked, it is also indicative of significant anxiety.
