Body Language Analysis No. 4274: Ariana Grande, Jimmy Fallon, and Recalling the Manchester Bombing - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ariana Grande was a guest Tuesday night on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show - where she sang, “No Tears Left To Cry” and talked about her upcoming album - Sweetener (to be released this summer) including songs such as, “R.E.M.,” “Raindrops”, “The Light Is Coming”, and “God Is a Woman.”

Fallon also spoke briefly regarding the Manchester Bombing. You may recall that almost one year ago - on 22 May 2017 - a suicide bomber killed 22 people and injured 512 in the foyer of Manchester Arena following an Ariana Grande concert. What follows is a partial analysis of Grande's nonverbal response.

During 4:57 - 4:59, Ms. Grande rubs her (right) upper arm. This is a very common anxiety signal. When you see this, you can be sure that the subject is NOT one the person wants to discuss.

In a similar Anxiety tell is seen during 5:01 - 5:07,  as Ariana crosses her arms and then rubs her left elbow.

She also breaks eye contact and gazes downward.

During 5:20 - 5:21, in response to Jimmy Fallon's statement regarding her returning to Manchester to perform a benefit concert, Ariana touches/rubs/covers her lower neck - manubrial (upper sternum) region. This display represents an even higher level of anxiety. It's also a nonverbal signal which commonly foretells the appearance of tears, tear-suppression/"choking-up".

Ms. Grande is still looking down.

Toward the end of this video clip (seen during 5:38 - 5:57, 6:02 - 6:03), the singer puts both of her hands beneath her legs (thighs). This is a strong signal of a Hesitancy to Disclose information. Ariana's body language is screaming, "I don't want to talk about this!"

Summary: Understandably, Ariana Grande's nonverbal behavior strongly indicates she has significant anxiety regarding the Manchester Bombing. Moreover, she absolutely does NOT want to discuss it - and most likely had the understanding that Jimmy Fallon was not going to broach the subject.

Body Language Analysis No. 4132: Drake's Tattoo of Denzel Washington - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Denzel Washington, a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, was recently a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon promoting his most recent film, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

During the show (beginning at 3:35 in the above video), Jimmy Fallon asked Washington about Drake's recent Tattoo of Denzel. The tattoo, on Drake's arm (by artist, Inal Bersekov) pictures Washington as his character Bleek Gilliam - from the 1990 film, "Mo' Better Blues".

Beginning at 4:12, Washington continues, saying, "... That's quite - that's crazy. No but it, I think he got, he got, some other, like, people he admires - tattoos as well."

Fallon said, "Oh, maybe I'm on there."

Denzel then responds immediately - bursting with sincere laughter. He also rapidly scratches (during 4:23 - 4:24), four times, with his paired, left index and left middle fingers - just in front of his left ear on his "cheekbone" (zygomatic process).

When a person scratches or rubs the region in front of their ear - just after someone else makes a statement/answers a question, etc. - or just as/just before THEY (the person doing the scratching/rubbing) says something - with very high probability, HE BELIEVES or KNOWS what was just said was a lie. In an analog/watered-down sense, this can also be a tell indicating, "I disagree with you".

In this example with Denzel, it's obvious to us all that Jimmy was joking, Moreover, Washington is a world-class actor - and yet he still can't/doesn't suppress the subconsciously-driven, but very natural act of calling-out a lie when he hears one (even if it was told in jest).

Body Language Analysis No. 4022: Jessica Alba's Rules for Naming Her Baby - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jessica Alba was recently a guest on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show. During her appearance, she spoke about her recently announced her third pregnancy - and the rules she and her husband have for naming their child.

At 1:11, Ms. Alba continues, "... So, our kids had to have unusual names, that also were words, and for some reason we chose, 'H'. So it has t' be single or double syllable, has to be an 'H', and it also has to be a word."

Immediately after making this statement, Ms. Alba's jaw moves laterally (to her right). This movement is sudden in onset, and lasts only for about three seconds, from about 1:23 - 1:26. This nonverbal signal is what is known as a "Jaw Confessional".

Sometimes a jaw confessional is accompanied by a similar component of lip movement - which is seen in the latter half of this particular example.

A jaw confessional indicates some level of embarrassment as well as a hesitancy to disclose. Often times it is also accompanied with an apology. Jessica Alba is a bit embarrassed as to her particular rules of child-naming - and taking the context into account, it's easy to correlate this as the cause of her embarrassment. Thus, for an observer, the jaw confessional serves as a sincerity validator. Moreover, if we already like the person, this action can often amplify our endearment to them.

However, if you were to see a jaw confessional - but it was NOT followed by a disclosure of awkward/embarrassing information or an apology, then you would know at the very last second the person decided to withhold information and therefore trying to deceive you.

Note that this jaw movement was very sudden in onset and lasted for only three seconds. If the mandibular movement were instead, slowly initiated, and of long duration, it would then have a completely different meaning. What would this second scenario indicate?

Body Language Analysis No. 3978: Keanu Reeves, Chuck Spadina, Sincerity, and Empathy - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chuck Spadina, er, ah, Keanu Reeves was recently a guest on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show. As with any accomplished actor, when they're not "in character" - e.g., when Keanu is just being Keanu - their body language betrays their true feelings - just like you, me, and the person down the street.

One commonly overgeneralized and/or misunderstood nonverbal display is when a person covers their mouth while smiling and/or laughing.

While there may be a component of embarrassment present - this is also a nonverbal tell that there are overall personality traits of both high sincerity and high empathy.

In such cases, the smile is virtually always one of high sincerity as well (although the smile may often be partially suppressed) - AND there is blushing present.

Summary: Covering one's mouth when there is a smile (or laughter) present is highly consistent with both high empathy and high sincerity quotients. People with pretentious, arrogant, and egocentric personalities rarely, if ever, display this gesture. This action is a valuable nonverbal tell which will help you foresee their behavior at other times - e.g., predicting overall personality traits - not just in that moment.

Additionally, blushing always signals a sincere (Duchenne) smile - although it's commonly partially suppressed.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3778: Steve Harvey Recounts His Miss Universe Mistake - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Through a series of mishaps while emceeing last year's Miss Universe Pageant, Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Miss Colombia (Ariadna Gutierrez) as the winner. Minutes later Harvey corrected his mistake and awarded it to its true recipient, Miss Philippines (Pia Wurtzbach).

Despite having told his story hundreds of times (having occurred in December of 2015), last night while recounting his story once again on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show, the comedian displayed multiple nonverbal tells indicative of anxiety. One cluster in particular is dissected here.

Beginning at 2:14, as Harvey says "... I don't know what the hell I was thinkin' about man. I was - it was the most gut-wrenching walk - I've ever had in my life - and I went back out there ...", Mr. Harvey squeezes his index finger, middle finger and ring finger of his left hand with his right hand. He also moves his legs together and apart several times (most notable between 2:16 - 2:18). This body language cluster is reminiscent to many of a young boy who has to use the bathroom. It indicates a high level of anxiety - and moreover, the fact that Harvey displays this nonverbal signal a year later tells us that Steve Harvey's overall empathy level (his "Empathy Quotient") is significantly higher than most.

Harvey was, to a degree, emotionally re-living the Miss Universe Oops moment as he told his story. This phenomenon is amplified for some people after they've experienced much more difficult life event(s) resulting in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - which in part manifests in an unfortunate re-living and thus emotionally re-experiencing of the inciting event(s) in type of repeating loop.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3759: Nicole Kidman's and Jimmy Fallon's Almost Date Redux - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Nicole Kidman was on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show earlier this week. This was round two of reminiscing on "Jimmy's and Nicole's almost date" of years past.

One of the more obvious nonverbal signals you may notice is that Kidman and Fallon both blushed - Jimmy moderately - while Nicole did so profusely. While blushing is certainly not a requirement for sincerity, when blushing IS present, it's strongly correlated with an overall sincere personality (but not necessarily in that moment). Yet this was not the most interesting body language exemplified in this clip.

What follows is a more nuanced nonverbal display.

This image was captured at 5:28 - which was just before Jimmy Fallon first mentions Keith Urban (Kidman's Husband). In addition to her blushing, notice Nicole's backward leaning torso, closed eyes (a prolonged blink) and her crossed arms (all quite beta body language).

A few seconds later (above), Kidman leans forward as she positions the back side (dorsal aspect) of her index and middle fingers touching the base of her chin while she begins to disclose her surprise. Although Nicole is still projecting some beta qualities here (e.g., her right arm remains across her torso), she has definitely "dialed up her alpha" via this particular left hand configuration signifying a deliberate (planned) disclosure.

A moment later (above) these same two fingers straighten and their tips making contact with the underside of her chin as Kidman comes closer to her denouement. This change of finger configuration is indicative of increased adrenaline and its accompanying anxiety.

And in this final image - even closer to her "reveal" moment - only Nicole's index finger (aka "forefinger", which signifies the greatest alpha status and higher adrenaline) remains "standing". Here her anxiety also has grown even further. In this instant she's in a state of emotional dissonance - where she feels both "in control" - yet also nervous.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3756: Amy Adams, Anxiety and Hesitancy to Disclose - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Amy Adams was a guest recently on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show to promote her recent films, Arrival and Nocturnal Animals.

Ms. Adams told a story illustrating her travel disorientation occurring while she was talking to her husband and daughter on the phone.

Delivering her denouement (during 0:43 - 0:46 ) she says, "... and I realized that I had been having this conversation from inside the men's restroom."

In the second half of her sentence, with left hand, Amy Adams rubs/flicks her thumb four times with her fingers.

First with her forefinger ...

Then with her middle finger ...

Again with her middle finger ...

She then finishes with her pinky ...

This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) signals anxiety. More specifically it has a strong tendency to occur when there is a hesitancy to disclose information.

Intriguingly, the fact Amy Adams omitted her ring finger whilst performing this display is significant for her feelings of stability in her marriage.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3716: Fatherhood, Body Language, Emotional Intelligence and Ashton Kutcher's Pants (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ashton Kutcher was a guest Wednesday on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show. Towards the end of the above video segment Mr. Mila Kunis rips his pants upon reenacting a somewhat hyperbolic car seat scenario. Immediately afterward he displays two nonverbal signals which are highlighted below.

Ashton Kutcher is a good actor. But one nonverbal behavior which is rarely acted, very commonly seen in everyday life - and yet almost never understood - is an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). Captured here at 2:40, an inward lip roll is a subconscious facial expression made when the psyche is trying to suppress the inward growth of strong emotions - as well as their outward expression.

A second later (2:41) Kutcher can be seen making a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue"). This signals the thought-emotion of "I've been caught" / "I've been bad" / "I just messed up".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3694: Donald Trump, Jimmy Fallon and Messing Up Hair - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The most interesting and important body language moment of Donald Trump's guest appearance on The Tonight Show was seen during Jimmy Fallon's preface.

Fallon: "Donald I, I wanna ask you 'cause the next time I see you, you, you could be President of the United States - I just wanted to know if there's just something we could do that's just not presidential really or something that, that we could do now that we're both just civilians .... like?"

Trump: "Like what? This is  - I'm not liking the sound of this. Go ahead."

Fallon: "Could I mess your hair up?"

Incredibly as Fallon says, "... you could be President of the United States - I just wanted to know ...", Trump rotates his head and neck, stares into the middle distance and his face morphs into an expression of an amalgam of both regret and disgust.

Trump also maintains his low conventional steeple. This hand-arm configuration (which, when used for anything other than very short duration, projects arrogance and patronizing emotional tones) is omnipresent for Mr. Trump.

This facial expression is subconsciously generated. Most people would consider Trump's emotions of disgust and regret to be very counter-intuitive. And while it's possible that these could be for his feelings toward President Obama or Hillary Clinton - this wasn't the context of Fallon's preface.

Summary: Donald Trump feels regret and disgust at the idea he could be President.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3672: Jessica Alba, Swass, Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last week Jessica Alba was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. And although she's an accomplished actor, when "Jessica is just being Jessica" - she not quite as skilled at suspending our disbelief. The same is true for virtually all actors.

One particularly good example of this phenomenon is Alba's "smile" - for throughout much of this video segment her smile is insincere.

The lower teeth should not be exposed during a sincere smile (aka Duchenne Smile). There are exceptions to this however - such as when crescendoing to or decrescendoing from sincere laughter (fully expressed sincere laughter typically does display the lower teeth, but NOT during sincere smiles), with a downward directed camera angle, or when the person is tilting their head and neck forward or if the observer is significantly taller. Other than in these scenarios - the bottom teeth should not be exposed with smiles of sincerity.

During this variety of insincere smile (social smile) the corners of the mouth are vectored laterally (toward the sides) rather than being directed primarily upward. This allows the lower teeth to be uncovered.

Another telltale signal of insincerity seen here is Jessica's jaw jut. During sincere smiles as well in the midst of sincere laughter - the jaw is retracted (pulled inward) - NOT jutting outward as is displayed in these examples.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3669: Jordan Spieth, Bill Murray and the Asymmetrical Smile - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier this week golfing phenomenon Jordan Spieth was a guest on The Tonight Show. He was telling Jimmy Fallon a funny story about golfing with Bill Murray. From a body language perspective Mr. Spieth provides a fantastic example of nonverbal behavior commonly displayed - yet rarely discussed.

Jordan Spieth displays an asymmetrical smile throughout a good portion of this video segment. Nonverbal novices will say that asymmetrical smiles are not true smiles - and they would be correct a good percentage of the time - yet certainly not always. Spieth's smile is absolutely sincere.

Note Spieth's relaxed, noncontracted forehead muscles, his partially closed eyelids, the temporary concave-up furrows in his lower eyelids and, although this is more prominent on his left - Jordan's upward directed cheek muscles. We can see in some of the frames Spieth's lower teeth - because he is of course speaking while smiling, due to the camera angle and his slightly forward tilted head/neck.

As the mouth component of Spieth's smile grows, we see it become more symmetrical. It's also important to note that simultaneously the degree to which his eyelids are closing increases - also amplifying his smile.

Summary: Sincere smiles (aka Duchenne Smiles), as they crescendo, may often begin asymmetrically - but will increase in symmetry as the smile grows. This also occurs in the reverse direction - as the smile wanes.
