Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3172: Jameis Winston, the NFL Draft, Body Language and Predicting Violent Behavior (PHOTO)

The 2015 NFL Draft begins today. Due to sexual allegations raised against Jameis Winston (which after an investigation, were later dropped) he may not be chosen first by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - as, in an alternate Universe, he otherwise would.

As healthy human beings, we all occasionally feel the emotions and thus display expressions of both contempt and - as Jameis Winston is here - disgust (Because we can't visualize the full right side of his face - we also can't say for sure if Winston also has some concomitant components of contempt). Yet those who display either of these facial configurations chronically - have significantly higher tendencies toward narcissistic personality disorder. In addition, those who express chronic disgust and/or contempt have a greater likelihood of problems with impulse control (losing their temper) as well as violent acts.

In the image above, Jameis Winston, the recent Florida State Seminoles quarterback and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, has significant facial features of disgust (perhaps a 3 on a 1-10 scale). His mild nostril flaring and the tightening of other mid-facial musculature (particularly of his "mustache area") are significant for disgust. Further "disgust amplifiers" include the backwards tilting (extension) of his neck & head - as well as the partial closure of Winston's eyelids.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3171: Brooke Baldwin - Blames Vets for Riots? Then Apologizes - Contrasting Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

These two videos are an excellent study in contrast. Yesterday, CNN Anchor Brooke Baldwin, in an interview Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on the subject of the rioting in Baltimore, said, I was talking to a city councilman here last week who was saying, ‘Brooke, these people have to live in the communities. There’s no emotional, or there’s a lack of emotional investment,’ ” Baldwin continued, “And a lot of these young people … and I love our nation’s veterans, but some of them are coming back from war, they don’t know the communities and they’re ready to do battle.

Note Baldwin's hand and arm movement during the dialog in the above video. In body language terminology these are examples of what are termed "Illustrators". Yet they are incongruous in both amplitude and context with her words (As if she was an orchestral conductor and the music is "off" to a bit). This disparity is a strong signal of insincerity. It shows us that Brooke Baldwin either did not believe what she was saying - or that she was being melodramatic and trying to inject (act) sincerity and emphasis when she was not well thought (or fully emotionally present) on the specifics. Either way this is insincere behavior.

Understandably, many have blasted her for making this statement.

Today she apologized for her words (See video below). In contrast to the above AND with vast majority of other apologies of celebrity and public officials - this one was sincere. Note that she did NOT read her apology. An apology that has to be read (and written by lawyers) is not spoken from the heart and not sincere. An unscripted apology, even to an eight-year old "feels right". Both Baldwin's vocal qualities and her choice of words were also sincere.

[For some reason, several months after it was posted, CNN has removed Brooke Baldwin's apology from their YouTube channel. The image captured below however, was taken during this apology.]

From a nonverbal perspective, Ms. Baldwin's central forehead is contracted and directed upward (an Upward CFC). Her inner eyebrows are also vectored up. In addition, Brooke's mouth configuration is consistent with mild pain and sadness. While her facial expression could have been more extreme, this is certainly consistent with sincerity and emotional pain.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3170: Angry mother beats son for participating in Baltimore Riots - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In a large and uncontrolled event such as a war or a riot, there's often a strong tendency for us to not focus on personal stories. This wide-angle view makes it easier to psychologically tolerate negative events. Toya Graham has for many - particularly parents - profoundly altered this news lens. After seeing her son throwing rocks at police on TV during the riots yesterday in Baltimore, she tracked him down (despite him wearing a black ski mask), physically grabbed him - and chased him home while smacking him multiple times. Graham was praised by Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts.

Ms. Graham is a mother of six and an assistant manager at an alcohol and drug treatment center. Shocked and angry at what she saw her son doing, she said, "That's my only son and at the end of the day, I don't want him to be a Freddie Gray." She added, "Is he a perfect boy? No he's not.  But he's mine."

From a body language perspective, Ms. Graham also provides some excellent teaching points. Whenever there is tension (especially anger) on the face, there also tends to be tension in the hands. This is particularly true with respect to a "Jaw Jut". Note in both of these still images, Toya Graham's jaw is jutted forward (more so in the second image). Her jaw is also clenched.

Ms. Graham's hand is also configured in a tight, closed-fist. Of course we know that she is beating her son. The nonverbal lesson here - is that very often before someone strikes with a fist (or a knife or fires a gun, etc.), their jaw will momentarily clench and jut forward. This observation alone (particularly in a male) substantially increases the chances of them immediately (or nearly so) behaving violently. If a fist is formed (simultaneously or thereafter) - the odds of assault are even greater. If you see such a nonverbal combination, take heed. Back off, run away and seek immediate shelter and protection. It may very well save your life.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3169: Baltimore Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez regarding the Death of Freddie Gray - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Since the funeral of Freddie Gray, much has yet to be publicly learned about the circumstances surrounding his spinal injury which lead to his death. Rioting in Baltimore was significant yesterday and extended into the early hours of the morning. The above video clip contains several different segments - one of these is a portion of a press conference featuring Baltimore Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez on 20 April 2015. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

1:21

Microexpression of Contempt

during the spoken word "... physical ..."

1:23

Exaggerated mouth, lip and jaw movements - e.g. above and beyond baseline behavior.

This is highly consistent with alpha personalities and others in alpha emotional settings when they're trying to project authority and assertiveness.

Although not extreme in this short video segment, exaggerated mouth, lip a jaw movements does not build rapport - rather it destroys rapport. This nonverbal behavior is consistent with a patronizing emotional tone and does not engender or project trust.

1:26

A second microexpression of contempt with a component of disgust during the spoken word "... autopsy ..."

This display of contempt is more pronounced compared with that exampled above (at 1:21).

Multiple and prolonged blinking (e.g., increasing blink frequency) that occurs in association with the statement, "... none of his limbs [extended pause] were broken ..."

1:31

Inward Lip Roll (ILR)

An inward lip roll is seen in response to the psyche attempting to suppress a crescendo of both an inward (internal) emotional build-up as well as minimizing an outward emotional expression.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3168: Connor McDavid on 2015 NHL Draft Lottery Day - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Connor McDavid, who's predicted by many to be a Wayne Gretzky-caliber player, is shown in the above video during the 2015 NHL Team Draft Lottery (18 April 2015). Although the respective teams will not announce their player choices' until 26-27 June, a lot of people have speculated that the young hockey phenom does not what to play for the Edmonton Oilers - the team who drew first choice.

What follows is a partial body language analysis of Connor McDavid.

McDavid is shown here just after the 2015 NHL team draft order was announced. He knows now that he'll probably be picked by the Edmonton Oilers. His Loose Forward Lip Purse (5:05) (as opposed to a tight lip purse or a lateral lip purse) shown here indicates his clandestine disagreement and/or his clandestine plan. This nonverbal tells us that he knows he must not voice his true feelings aloud - which, particularly for being only 18 years old, we will see momentarily - he does a fairly good job (yet not a perfect one). It's helpful to think of this expression as, "I'm not going to show (or tell) all my cards (plan)" or "I'm going to make them think one thing, but not my true feelings/plan."

His very prolonged false watch adjust is a very common anxiety tell, but more specifically this nonverbal MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) tells us that although he's certainly a dominant personality - McDavid is trying to call-forth more alpha qualities for his upcoming TV interview. This is one of many alpha up-regulating nonverbal tells.

After he realizes another man who was accompanying him is no longer by his side, Connor McDavid takes in a moderately deep breath and reaches for his heart (5:18).

He's being pushed out of the nest. He's nervous (no surprise).

At 6:59 we see McDavid's loose forward lip purse repeated as he again is feeling strong disagreement (and he's brainstorming a way out of the Oilers) - but when this expression is made, such disagreement is rarely voiced aloud.

The loose forward lip purse nonverbal is always made by a person who believes they are the alpha relative with who(m) their interacting - AND they believe they have a good chance of success in implementing and executing their plan(s).

Few of us would be able to handle ourselves on TV as Connor McDavid did - yet he had multiple other tells (nonverbal, verbal and with respect to his paralanguage) which betrayed his true thought-emotions (What others did you note?).

Considering the millions on the line in professional sports, players (particularly rookies) would be wise to be coached in preparation for such camera appearances, lest they lose tactical contract negotiation strength, salary, bonuses and endorsements.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3167: Bruce Jenner's 20/20 Interview, Part II - Confidence, Vulnerability and Sincerity - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Part II nonverbal analysis of Bruce Jenner's 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer - some highlights of the above video segment are discussed below.

During 0:17 - 0:19, 0:23 - 0:24 and 0:28 and 0:30 Bruce Jenner displays examples of the Self-Righteous Head Wiggle (SRHW).

A self-righteous head wiggle can be very short-lived (e.g. a microexpression or near-microexpression) - yet also may last several seconds. This nonverbal has a significant tendency to occur in clusters. It's comprised of a rapid side-to-side movement of the head & neck - which is high in frequency and typically has mild-to-moderate amplitude (amount of movement).

A SRHW is displayed by a person in the midst of an alpha mindset - with strong opinions who is highly confident. They may often be so self-assured that may consider them smug. They see themselves as a relative alpha or authority figure - at least during those moments.

The self-righteous head wiggle must be viewed in the dynamic context of a video. The primary movement is a side-to-side wiggle - however sometimes there is an additional backwards component or a forward vectoring. Contempt, disgust or incredulity body language often is seen with the backwards movement - while arrogance and condescending nonverbal signals may accompany the forward motion (which is often seen with smaller audiences and even in one-on-one scenarios. Very often there is an increase in vocal frequency (pitch) as well as volume and rate of speech with the self-righteous head wiggle. Similar analog nonverbal movements may also be seen with the torso, jaw or the entire body.

This particular loose and relatively relaxed hand illustrator is known as the "Spiral Staircase" because of the configuration of the fingers. It's one of many "Alpha-Beta Hybrids" - wherein it's not too aggressive (e.g., some nonverbal behavior can send signals of arrogance and patronizing emotional mindsets - thus destroying rapport) - yet it's not too demure, submissive or weak. Alpha-beta hybrids are profoundly valuable body language tools (yet very underutilized) and are extremely helpful in sales, interviews, the courtroom and in negotiations - for they dance skillfully within the nuance of the middle ground (where most people stumble).

At the very end of this video clip, Bruce Jenner's head and neck tilts (in relation to his already-angled torso). This tilting is a signal of sincere vulnerability (e.g., I'm letting you see the "real me", inside my heart, inside my thoughts. I'm sharing a personal side of me). Unless there is a physical injury, disease, etc. - when the torso is leaning to one side and/or the neck and head tilts in a similar manner - this dynamic body language configuration is indicative of sincerity-vulnerability.

In summary - in this video segment Bruce Jenner displays nonverbal signals indicating self-righteousness, confidence and sincere-vulnerability.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3165: Bruce Jenner's 20/20 Interview, Part I - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Bruce Jenner made his long-awaited appearance on 20/20 last night - discussing his gender-transitioning as well as many other related subjects about which some have been curious. There were numerous nonverbal signals throughout the two hour interview. Request for analyses of this particular interview have been voluminous. These will be broken into several key segments over the next few days.

Jenner begins in this video, "Shouldn't I take my pony tail out? Yeah, why not, huh? We're talking about all this stuff [deep inhalation] Yeah, let's take the damn pony tail out."

As Diane Sawyer notes - it's removal is indeed a symbol - a metaphor for an openness and change. Yet from a nonverbal perspective this goes significantly deeper.

His elbows are vectored out laterally (NOT pointed strait ahead) - thus exposing his open armpits in a significantly-sexual moment. Bruce Jenner is about to announce to the World he is "For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman", and he's projecting his sexuality for all to see. It may sound odd to some, but although he is feeling anxiety - and even fear (see below), in this moment he is for the first time openly a trans-woman and wants to be perceived not only as female in gender - but also sexually. Bluntly stated - Bruce Jenner the (trans-)woman is feeling sexy.

When Jenner fluffs his hair, this preening behavior projects a component of femininity as his more overt sexuality display diminishes.

For fraction of a second, with Bruce blurred in the background, we can see on the monitor Jenner's "Mouth of Fear" (mild-moderate) - with additional jaw clenching and neck muscle tightening ("Neck of Fear"). He is experiencing emotional dissonance - which is very understandable. The former Olympic Gold Medal Decathlete and World record holder is happy this moment has arrived - yet he's fearful too. Who wouldn't be?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3164: Johnny Depp's portrayal of Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass" trailer - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Johnny Depp stars as Whitey Bulger in the upcoming film "Black Mass" (due for release on 18 September 2015). Whitey Bulger is an infamous former organized crime figure from South Boston and currently serving two consecutive life sentences plus five years on multiple charges including racketeering and involvement in 11 murders.

In the above film trailer during the 0:44 - 0:45 and 0:48 - 0:50 segments, Johnny Depp displays a very good (although dramatic) acted example of a "Loose Forward Lip Purse" nonverbal sign (in distinction to a "Tight Lip Purse" or a "Lateral Lip Purse" which both have different meanings). This body language has associated with it, a very specific and profoundly valuable set of thought-emotions. It signals a clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. In other words - they are voicing little or no disagreement, when they're feeling dramatic disagreement. Also, if they're telling you one plan - it's a ruse - for their intention is to use another. Those who display this signal view themselves as the alpha compared with the other(s) with whom they're communicating. They also believe they've good chance of success - and their plan bearing fruit.

Take home points: A loose forward lip purse indicates a disparity (which is often extreme) between the spoken word and what is truly being thought and felt. Johnny Depp's acted forward lip purse shown here is dramatic - and most every day examples are moderate and subtle.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3163: Robert Downey Jr. Interview Part Deux - Body Language mistakes interviewers and negotiators should never make ... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Robert Downey Jr. walks out during an interview promoting the film, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" - Part Deux.

While naturally the cameras were, the majority of the time, trained on Robert Downey Jr., some of the time we could see Krishnan Guru-Murthy. There is a clear pattern that develops here - as Guru-Murthy's words and questions as well as his vocal qualities grew more offensive and condescending - his body language did as well. This DOES indicate sincerity - in other words, although these qualities are not desirable, the triad of verbal language, vocal qualities (paralanguage) and his Body Language - were all congruent and all trended in the negative direction as this interview proceeded.

What follows here is a partial analysis of some of this negative behavioral pattern.

0:11

Displayed early on,
a Palms Up Illustrator is very
rapport building and non-confrontational.

This is consistent with and fosters - both trust and openness to questions while still being assertive.

1:04

Mr. Guru-Murthy pointed several multiple times at Robert Downey Jr.

Index Finger Pointing is universally (World-wide) interpreted as offensive, reprimanding and patronizing. It never builds bridges - rather it destroys rapport.

If you want to build your ego - go ahead and point though ....

4:51

Palms out - toward audience (even an audience of one)

Fingers moderately tense - here a modification of "The Claw" and the "Split Finger Fastball" a good alpha-beta hybrid with a large audience, but in front of just one person this can often be too aggressive and inflammatory. There are elements of the "Dominant Spider" here too.

5:29

Palms out and fingers straightened with increased tension - pointed at Robert Downey Jr.

This illustrator is often used by politicians and those asserting authority, yet it often backfires if not used in proper contexts and in small doses. With an interviewer this body language projects a disproportionate authority and condescending emotional tones which are not conducive to a good interview or favorable negotiations.

Words, vocal qualities (paralanguage) and nonverbal signals must always be congruent. When they're not - something is wrong. Moreover - when they are parallel, they should be fully understood and directed in a manner which engenders rapport and never to inflame. It's as if we're all given a room full of instruments - anyone can make noise, but hopefully we play music.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy self-destructed like a slow motion car crash.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3162: Robert Downey Jr. walks out of Interview - Star walks out when asked about past - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today this video was published on YouTube. In it, Robert Downey Jr. speaks of his thoughts on super heroes, Iron Man as well as his latest film "Avengers: Age of Ultron". However the talented actor did not care for Krishnan Guru-Murthy's questions (along with most everyone who watched it) and he walked out early. This interview is so very full of nonverbal signals - below is a partial analysis of some of the more telling moments.

3:55.3

Downey displays some Subtle Contempt

Do you detect some signals of disbelief as well?

3.55.7

His contempt is slightly more expressed - although still mild-moderate. Many would falsely label this a "bit of a smile" or a "polite smile" or "social smile".

Note also his left eyebrow is further raised signaling incredulity (e.g., "I can't believe you're making this inference!").

[Prominent Head Shaking follows- a further incredulity signal, please view the video to see this dynamic].
What other nonverbal signals here telegraph some anger?

3:56

Sincere Smile (Downey's smiling at what he feels is a ridiculous situation - thus partially sarcastic-sardonic and to a degree - a [healthy] coping mechanism)

4:01

Downey looks up and slightly to HIS left while temporarily focused at a distance. This is significant for Visual Recall when Guru-Murthy asks him about a quote Downey gave to the New York Times. He is trying to and/or visualizing the quote, in print, in his mind's eye.

4:46

"I couldn't even tell you what a liberal is ... so ..." [then "Take it or leave it Expression"]

Elements of dismissive emotional tone

Elements of incredulity as well

Subtle anger here too

After the 5:00 minute mark, Mr. Downey's respiration increased. An even greater increase in his breathing is seen about 5:25 mark.

5:42

Robert Downey Jr. displays an extended blink as Guru-Murthy implies Downey's lack of comfort level with the subject matter. It's at this exact moment that Downey "Emotionally Red-lined" with respect to reaching the mental state of realistically walking out of the interview.

5:56

Robert Downey Jr. says, "Your foot is starting to jump a little bit, you better get to your next question."

Note Downey's Deep Inhalation after his statement.

When he is visible, Guru-Murthy's legs and feet were much of the time in motion along with frequent readjustments in his chair signifying significant anxiety.

(As a body language expert, I must say I was tickled pink when Downey called out Guru-Murthy on this nonverbal display - implying its significance. However in YOUR day-to-day world, the vast majority of the time it is best to keep such knowledge to oneself thus maintaining a profound advantage.)

A greater increase in respiration is noted at about 6:00 - as Robert Downey Jr.'s breathing even becomes significantly audible. The Videographer notices this significant emotional change and thus zooms in.

6:48

Clear defensiveness on the part of the interviewer as he crosses his arms across his chest.

6:54

Jaw Jut displayed by Guru-Murthy - indicating significant anger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3161: John Stamos Announces Full House is Coming Back on Jimmy Kimmel - Body Language regarding Bob Saget (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It certainly is not the cultural equivalent of Harper Lee's upcoming second novel, "Go Set a Watchman" - yet the return of the '80s-90s T.V. show, "Full House" was announced last night by John Stamos on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

A body language analysis of a few key moments gives us insight into what John Stamos was thinking - and whether or not Bob Saget is (yet?) on-board for the series return.

Beginning at 1:01, Kimmel asks, "Will ah, your friend - your friend Bob Saget has to be on it, right?"

Stamos' first "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") occurs during 1:06 just as Kimmel says, "... on it ... "

1:08

"Well - he bet-, he better be."

His second tongue jut (with a lick lip) just after word "be".

Kimmel: "He will be on it"

Stamos:"Yeah" - rapidly following with his third tongue jut, lick lip (during 1:09)

In this context, John Stamos' tongue jut/lizard tongue indicates his affirmative of, "Yeah" is deceptive. His earlier statement, "He bet-, he better be" tells us that Stamos feels a significant "stepping over the line" anxiety. Stamos feels he's put either the production company or Bob Saget (or both) in a difficult spot (one of them probably directed him to do so). The tongue jut is the psyche revealing to outside world, "I've been bad", "I've been caught", "I've done something foolish" or "I've gotten away with something" (Navarro)(when a tongue jut is clustered with other nonverbal signals it can indicate excitement or sincere self-deprecation).

This example serves an excellent illustration of how the ability to interpret nonverbal behavior in real-time is profoundly valuable in the context of the sales process, a negotiation, deposition, testimony, etc.

What other nonverbal signals did Stamos display which reinforce his deception.

TMZ Sports has just released a video of a portion of Warren Sapp's interview-interrogation associated with his subsequent arrest in Phoenix, Arizona on 2 February 2015 (the day after the Super Bowl) for allegedly soliciting a prostitute.

The above video is shown here because it includes a very telling nonverbal. When one arm (and often this is seen with both arms) is directed laterally (NOT pointed forward) - and usually for more than just a second or two - wherein the armpit is widely exposed (it may of course be covered by clothing), depending on the other nonverbal signals with which it is clustered, it usually indicates one of three emotional states:

1. Alpha Dominance
2. I or We have just been defeated or captured
3. Sexual attraction or sexual fantasy with a component of sexual arousal

Based on the other signals present, which of the above scenarios do you think applies to Warren Sapp in this scenario? How would your decision and body language analysis be influenced by the fact that at the time of this video, Mr. Sapp did not believe he was going to be arrested?
