Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3674: Drake Presents Rihanna with Vanguard Award - 2016 Video Music Awards - MTV - Body Language & Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

At the recent MTV Video Music Awards, Drake, a long time close friend, presented the Vanguard Award to Rhianna. His intro and background story telling were heartfelt (and they are now strongly rumored to be a romantic couple). Rhianna is, for the most part, a very alpha personality. Thus as with most entertainers - she often seeks the limelight. Yet, when another person is touting your skills and accomplishments - it is (and thus feels) fundamentally different vs. when such alpha behavior is self-initiated. And in such scenarios the nonverbal behavior is very different as well. What follows are highlights some of the key body language moments of this interaction.

0:46

Here Rihanna's hands are clasped behind her back. This particular body language is high alpha as well as confidence building - yet she did not hold this configuration for long.

0:54

Here Rihanna is feeling slightly embarrassed. Her arms crossed - and the fact that her hands hidden is particularly telling.

1:06

Hand rubbing and/or scratching the back of the neck is a classic display of "Honest Anxiety".

2:06

Touching or rubbing the base of the front of the neck/the top of the sternum (manubrium) is a classic anxiety tell and projects higher beta emotional tones (definitely NOT an alpha maneuver).

2:33

A variation of the "Fig Leaf" (aka "Genital Guarding") is another very common beta body language. It's unusual for an alpha dominant person to maintain this configuration for long (of course even alphas have beta moments). When the fingers are intertwined (as is seen here), it's less beta (more alpha) than if one hand was placed in front of the other (but if still covering the lower abdomen/genital area).

3:03

The opposite wrist hold is another beta position. For the most part, the further up the opposite arm it's being held, the more beta the nonverbal signal becomes (depending of course on the other body language and facial expressions simultaneously being projected).

Summary: Although she's an alpha personality, in this presentation we see excellent nonverbal examples of Rihanna's emotional dissonance (e.g, being proud fluctuating with feeling humbled [and sometimes embarrassed]). Such alpha-beta flux behavior is typical for a person in this or a similar settings - who has moderate to high baseline levels of sincerity and empathy.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3607: Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Dating Rumors and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It was revealed on Thursday that Mika Brzezinski has managed to recently complete a divorce in a rather under-the-radar fashion. Her Morning Joe co-host, Joe Scarborough, went through a divorce three years earlier. It's also been rumored the two are dating.

Along these lines, there is a very obvious and classic nonverbal display exampled in the video segment above. And while it's not definitive for a clandestine relationship, it is strongly suggestive of it.

Duping delight is a nonverbal behavior wherein a sincere smile (aka a Duchenne smile) is displayed - yet partially suppressed (to a varying degree).  One way this occurs is via a partial hand covering. This is response to the joy some people feel when it is believed they have perpetrated a successful deception. What is seen here is a variation on this theme. Joe Scarborough smiles sincerely - but also partially during the following dialog:

Mika Brzezinski: "Can I get to the lead story now?"

Joe Scarborough: [over-talking] "By the way, there's, there's, there are a lot of lead stories today but why don't we start with the Trump lead story."

Mika: [over-talking]: "I will finish your sentence and start with politics."

The two hosts were fairly specifically poking fun at the rumors that they were dating. Mika did a better job at suppressing her smile than did Joe. If their relationship were only platonic, and they were simply exercising self-deprecating humor, there would be much less impetus to suppress a smile. The fact that Scarborough felt the need to bring a glass to his mouth - (a classic example of a MAP surrogate [Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier]) - in order to assist in the direct suppression of his smile, strongly suggests that the romantic rumors are true.

If there were nothing to drink and Scarborough instead put his hand to his mouth in an otherwise similar manner, what would you think such a gesture would indicate?

The act of putting a glass/cup to one's mouth and drinking will give the person camouflage, time and a direct mechanical interruption so that the smile/laugh cycle can be partially or completely broken

It's also a red flag that the "lead story" the two jokingly allude to - is their alleged love-relationship, rather than her divorce (for among other things, with regard to what the public KNOWS to be true - her divorce is fact, while their affair is still speculation). Moreover, Scarborough can't offer condolences to Brzezinski if he has been a catalyst or a cause for the break-up of her marriage.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3535: Prince, Sexual Signals and Body Language (PHOTO)

When one eye is covered - usually by hair or by part of a hat, it evokes the playfulness of a child's peek a boo game. As we grow out of childhood, in the context of romantic relationships, this playfulness overlaps with and morphs into a sex appeal. While it is certainly more common with women and those who are androgynous, it's also a body language signal seen in straight men with longer hair or with the brim of a hat.

When flirting, one should take care not to stare with the uncovered eye. Only short glances, with brief eye contact - made only for a second or two - then broken by looking down (not sideways) - and then reestablished for another evanescent moment - will send signals of sexual interest. A simultaneous sincere smile (Duchenne smile) - particularly a partially suppressed one, will potentiate the message of sexual attraction.

Displaying only part of the face also adds to an ambiance of mystery - which helps with advertising, attention and establishing romance.

Thank you Prince - you'll be missed. My condolences to your friends and family.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3351: A Body Language Signal of Sincere Affection (PHOTOS)

An Afghan refugee is shown here kissing his daughter. This image was captured just a few days ago on the Greek Island of Lesbos as they disembarked from their small boat.

Beyond the more obvious holding, hugging and kissing - a less appreciated, yet very strong nonverbal signal of affection is exampled in this moment. When a parent, a child, friend, lover, etc. touches their head to another person's head - particularly with their own eye (usually closed) or regions adjacent to it - affection is sincere.

This highly reliable body language signal of true affection is under-recognized by most. Moreover, those who display it more often also tend to have higher overall empathy quotients - not just with the person with whom they're interacting at that time - but with all people.

What other nonverbal sign seen in this photo conveys higher sincerity?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3077: Caroline Wozniacki & Rory McIlroy - One Reason Why Relationships Fail - and an Important Warning Sign (PHOTO)

When a woman is equal to, almost the same height - or taller than her boyfriend, fiancé, or husband - she will very often discontinue wearing heels. This body language behavior is particularly strong in the context of a relatively new relationship. What are the reasons for this? - the woman wants to feel feminine, she also wants to make her man feel masculine - and she does not want to constantly remind him of his relative short stature. Instinctively she knows that doing so will lead to tensions of many sorts. Most women will say, "It just doesn't feel right!" to be taller than her partner.

Of course there are some women who never stop wearing heels when dating or when eventually they marry shorter men. They will not tolerate such social posturing and are thus very confident and alpha females (e.g. Carla Bruni) - but to make such a relationship last (a relative term to be sure when it comes to dating or marriage) they must be with a very confident man (e.g. Nicolas Sarkozy).

However when a woman who had initially adopted a "no heels" or short heels habit - converts back to wearing heels (with the exception of some professional settings), this is a warning sign that she no longer prioritizes their height disparity and thus indicates a drop of empathy towards her partner and signals an emotional rift, falling out of love or perhaps even infidelity (e.g., she wants to appear attractive to other potential or actual partners). Empathy is directly correlated with love and relationship longevity.

Moreover the Polish Anthropologist, Boguslaw Pawlowski, Ph.D., has noticed a very interesting predictor of both attraction as well as relationship longevity - Male to Female height ratio. If the man is 9% taller than the woman (1.09 times taller - or inversely stated - if the woman is 91.7% the height of the man) - this is the optimum height for attraction and relationship longevity.

It's interesting to note that Tom Cruise (5'7" [170.2 cm]) is 2 inches (3.08 cm) shorter than his then-wife Katie Holmes (5'9" [175.25 cm]). Their male-to-female ratio was only 0.97! Conversely, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward - who were married for 50 years - had a ratio of exactly 1.09. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have a ratio of 1.085 and their marriage is going on 27 years.

Caroline Wozniacki is taller than her former fiancé - and is listed at 5'10" (177.8 cm) while Rory McIlroy is generously reported to be 5'9" (175.25 cm) - this would put their height ratio at 0.985. Yet looking at the above image, even when taking into account her heels and the fact he is closer to the camera - it seems she is taller than him by a greater margin of 1 inch - but more like 2 to 3 inches (putting this estimated ratio between 0.957 and 0.971). Of course these are only statistical correlations - and statistics do not govern the behavior of individual people, relationships, athletes, or atoms. Statistics govern large groups. So while there are many exceptions - yet these tenancies are very interesting and not to be ignored.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2985: Penélope Cruz is Esquires's 2014 Sexiest Woman Alive - Body Language of Flirting (PHOTOS)

Earlier this week Esquire Magazine named Penélope Cruz as their 2014 "Sexiest Woman Alive". The body language cluster that the Spanish beauty displays in the above image is one that most men find particularly provocative and one all women can use to allure.

This configuration is classically flirtatious and irresistible - looking backwards over a mildly raised shoulder with the head tilted down so that the eyes are looking up. This make the eyes appear larger and is a nonverbal combination that will captivate many males while engendering feelings strength and dominance. Her slightly open mouth, with hair partially covering her eyes as well as bare shoulders all amplify this "come hither" look. The stroking of her hair and lower back arching completes this seductive series.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2918: Lauren Bacall, Flirting and a "Come-hither look" (PHOTO)

Another great actor, Lauren Bacall has passed away.

In this obviously posed image, taken in 1944 when she was 20, Ms. Bacall strikes a body language configuration which is particularly sexually provocative.

Note that Lauren is looking back over a raised shoulder with her head tilted down - so that her eyes are looking up. Among other things, this configuration can make the eyes appear larger - which is a universal signal of beauty, although in this example her eyelids are slightly closed (what signal does this send here?).

Although Ms. Bacall's sexual attraction nonverbals are significant in this photo, her flirtatious appearance would be further amplified if:
  • Her eyes were open wider (but not too widely)
  • Her lips and jaw were open slightly
  • She had a suppressed yet sincere smile
  • She were biting her bottom lip
  • Her nostrils were not slightly flared (as they are in this example)
  • Her left shoulder were bare
What else would dial up her "come-hither look"?

My sincere condolences to the family and loved-ones of Ms. Bacall

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2877: Zac Efron and Michelle Rodriguez Dating - Thumbs Forward Arms Akimbo (PHOTOS)

Zac Efron and Michelle Rodriguez are seen here on a sail boat while vacationing off the coast of Sardinia, Italy. After several weeks of rumors, the Hollywood couple have confirmed they are dating.

In the image above, Efron is subconsciously showing us several distinct nonverbal signals. The most obvious one is his "Arms Akimbo" configuration - however he is displaying a variety less common in men - with his thumbs forward and fingers backward.

Thumbs forward arms akimbo signals some assertiveness - yet significantly less so compared to the more common fingers forward variation (thus not highly alpha and not highly beta - but what is known as an "alpha-beta hybrid"). It signifies an elevated level of emotional support for those in whom one's attention is directed - as well as that of a quizzical mindset. A person displaying a thumbs forward arms akimbo always has an elevated level of emotional comfort. Thus if you note a person changing from a thumbs forward to a fingers forward akimbo stance - this is a very reliable signifier that their emotional comfort has dropped (much like a deer raising its tail when it goes to a higher level of alertness). This significant (while subtle to some) shift in hand-arm position will be virtually always accompanied by elevated facial anxiety indicators (can you name some?).

From a body language nomenclature perspective, the thumbs forward arms akimbo is classified both a subtle "emblem" as well as a nonverbal "MAP" (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier).

What other nonverbal sexual attraction signals (and others) do you see in this image?

What additional beta signals? What alpha signs?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2840: Shailene Woodley, Jon Steward Show and a Body Language of Sexual Interest Display (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Shailene Woodley's new film, "The Fault in Our Stars" will be released tomorrow in the United States. In the above July 2013 appearance on The Jon Stewart show, Woodley (interviewed here by Stewart's stand in, John Oliver) speaks about her then upcoming film "The Spectacular Now".

On multiple occasions throughout this interview, Woodley displays a highly reliable sexual availability signal. This is exemplified by Shailene adjusting her hair with her elbow pointed out and armpit exposed - this particular MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is a highly reliable body language signal of sexual display and availability. This does not mean that she's attracted to Oliver, (unless of course he was the only person or the primary person present) - but of course in this setting she knows she's on a T.V. show which is viewed by millions .... and Shailene simply feels sexy.

Take home point: If your female sexual partner displays this body language in the context of relative privacy - she is giving you the green light.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2781: Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Rolling Stone and Flirting - Body Language of Attraction (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Julia Louis Dreyfus appears on the 24 April 2014 edition of "Rolling Stone". Among other things, she is shown with a portion of the U.S. Constitution penned in a temporary tattoo on her back.

The very accomplished and hilarious comedian and actor made a bit of a splash because she appears nude - but also because a copy of John Hancock's signature is on the small of her back. Of course, Hancock did not sign the Constitution - rather he signed the Declaration of Independence.

The nonverbal cluster that Rolling Stone chose for their cover is a particularly provocative pose which projects an abundance of sexual energy. Few men can resist this highly flirtatious body language configuration - which sends strong signals. The classic cluster - which is mostly, yet not fully expressed here includes: looking backwards over a raised shoulder with the head tilted down - so that the eyes gaze upward with a partial sincere (Duchenne) eye smile (not shown here) and a partially suppressed mouth smile (mild mixed with false surprise here).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2779: Rep. Vance McAllister Caught on Camera Kissing Staffer - Affection vs. Lust - What their Body Language says (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

U.S. House of Representative, Vance McAllister was recently caught in an embarrassing a potentially career-ending scenario when a video of him embracing and kissing one of his staffers was leaked (Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock). The Louisiana Congressman is not a stranger to controversy as he drew fire earlier this year when he personally invited Willie Robertson (Phil's son) of Duck Dynasty fame to attend the 2014 State of the Union Address. Representative McAllister's office has issued a statement of apology - however to date, no apology has been given by the congressman publicly.

It is impossible to discern any amount of sincerity via a letter drafted on McAllister's (or anyone's) behalf. Apologies, if they are sincere and if they are to be believed must be given directly - in front of a live audience. Apologies must also never be read from a script. Never. This is true whether one is seeking damage control, apologizing from the heart and/or looking for forgiveness.

Note how the positions of the lower half of Peacock's and McAllister's bodies are oriented at ninety degrees. What's more is the Congressman's right foot is pointed away from Peacock. We point our feet, abdomen, torso, face and eyes towards those we love, have affection for and/or respect. This is particularly true when kissing such a person. And while one hip of each is touching, their other hips' are rotated out at right angles.

This was a kiss and an embrace of lust - and has a very low affection quotient.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2764: Embarrassment, Affection & Flirtation - Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher - Kiss Cam Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were at the Clippers - Pistons game in LA this past Saturday night. So was the Kiss Cam. Last month it was announced the couple was recently engaged - and there are reports that Ms. Kunis is pregnant.

Of course we know Mila and Ashton are in love - most would call this obvious. Yet an analysis of their body language is very telling and instructive for those who seek some nonverbals of romance.

In this moment, Mila is both embarrassed and is rapidly processing the fact that the kiss cam is now focused on her and Ashton.

Rapid covering of the mouth is extremely common in embarrassment. It is also seen much more common when a person is interacting with another with whom they are attracted.

Blushing often accompanies the rapid mouth covering - and while it of course occurs with embarrassment, it also has a very high correlation with physical attraction.

Mr. Kutcher is displaying a "tongue jut". In this body language cluster-context it indicates excitement or "I've been caught". However depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered a tongue jut (aka "Lizard Tongue") may also indicate several other thought-emotions including self-deprecating humor, "I've been bad", "I've done a foolish thing" or "I've got away with something".

Mila's look away and continued mouth covering with additional eye covering component indicates continued emotional processing and embarrassment.

Ashton's extended eyelid closure is a truncated version of his fiancée’s eye covering. Kutcher's tongue jut continues.

No explanation needed .... eh?

Mila has gone on record saying her very first romantic kiss was in fact with Kutcher while they both were filming "That 70's Show".

While Kutcher points at the camera, his mouth has re-configured to an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). The inward lip roll signifies the subconscious mind's attempt to suppress the inward crescendo and the outward manifestation of strong emotions. Most often this is a negative emotion such as anger, frustration, or contempt - however here Ashton is overjoyed - but he doesn't want to fully show us.

Mila on the other hand is expressing true joy-happiness with a sincere smile displaying only her bottom teeth, a relaxed forehead, partially closed eyelids with (difficult to see in this low resolution image) concave-up dynamic furrows in her lower eyelids.

Congratulations Mila and Ashton!

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2761: What Specific Dance Qualities makes a Hetero Man Attractive to Women? The Body Language of Dancing (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Good news for the men of the World - romance, dating and flirtation just got a bit easier. You no longer have to be a finalist on "Dancing with the Stars" or have the "Dirty Dancing" moves of Patrick Swayze to help you woo women. Researchers Dr. Nick Neave and Kristofor McCarty of Northumbria University have for the first time elicited the body language characteristics of a man's dancing which attracts women.

The researchers filmed various heterosexual men dancing to a basic drum rhythm using advanced motion capture cameras as well as bio-mechanical analysis. Their images were then converted to avatars in order to control for other attraction variables. These men were also evaluated for upper and lower body strength and vascular fitness. Heterosexual women and men where then shown the avatar videos and asked to assess for dance quality.

It turns out that both arm movements and hand-grip strength of the dancers were significant predictors of the qualities of dance - by both heterosexual men and women (e.g. The better the hand-grip strength and arm movements - the higher their dancing was rated). Thus heterosexual men are able to gauge the strength and virility of their competition by evaluating their rivals' dancing.

Women rated men better dancers if they made larger and more varied movements of their neck, torso and abdomen. Those with a variation in movements of the wrists and left shoulder as well as fast movements of the right knee were also consistently rated as better dancers.

Men who had extreme movements of the arms - or those who kept their arms close to their torso as well as their legs closer together - were rated by women as poorer dancers.

In conclusion, heterosexual women have a natural nonverbal ability to predict men's potential as sexual partners in addition to arm strength of heterosexual males simply by assessing their dancing. Heterosexual men will use a similar skill to size-up the physical strength of potential rivals.
