Body Language Analysis No. 4397: Donald Trump Defends Himself Against The Whistleblower - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

President Trump met with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday 20 September 2019. After their meeting, the two men took questions from the Press in the Oval Office. What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of a particularly important portion of that exchange.

In response to a journalist saying, "We want to address this whistleblower story, Sir", the President displays what is known as a Tight Tongue Jut (5:11). A tight tongue jut is a signal for the thought-emotions of:

• Disgust
• Distaste
• Despising
• Refuting

— for what was just heard or seen.

Mr. Trump then immediately leans his torso away from/pulls away from the journalist to whom he's speaking (5:26) -  just after he says, "I've had conversations with many leaders, 're [sic] always appropriate."

This dynamic strongly suggests the President does not believe — and thus has low confidence in his own statement. Please view this portion of the video, as this still image does not capture his motion.

Crucially, there's also a simultaneous mild expression of fear on the President's face.

Trump then immediately says, "I think Scott can tell you that". Notice his somewhat subtle but highly significant, Suppressed Smile (5:27).

Why is the President smiling in this moment - during a question and answer regarding such a serious subject? A smile, when it's out of context, is always telling.

His partially suppressed smile is related to what Trump also said — Cracking a sarcastic, 'joke' (in a passive-aggressive manner) is a manipulative technique often used to escape/jump-start a person out of an emotionally uncomfortable situation/subject. Now watch this portion of the video again at 0.5 or even 0.25 speed. It's profoundly important to notice, that Trump never looks Prime Minister Morrison in the eye.

An additional component of this smiling out-of-context behavior is associated with a phenomenon known as Duping Delight. Duping delight is a smile which occurs when a person derives true, sincere pleasure from their belief that they've fooled you or gotten away with something. Thus, the real reason for Trump's smile/laughter is camouflaged - if he cracks a 'joke' (or pretends to), he's allowed to smile and/or laugh. But really he's taking pleasure in his belief that he's fooling us.

From a Statement Analysis perspective, Trump's multiple uses of the word, "appropriate" is also highly suspect (three times within five seconds, 5:25 - 5:30). "Appropriate" is a word which people often use to lend credibility to their opinion. It's a phenomenon of rationalization behavior — a word which pretends to be objective, but it really screams with subjectivity and confirmation bias.

As he says the word, "political" (5:38, "It's just another political hack-job"), the President also displays and interesting expression - an amalgam of both Contempt (note how his mouth is asymmetrical, elevated on his right) and Fear (seen in his forehead and eyes).

When a journalist asked, "At some point did you discuss Joe Biden, his son, or his family?" the President responded, "Ah, it doesn't matter what I discuss, but I will say this,  ...". As he says, both "discuss" and "say this", Mr. Trump displayed a Lip Curl (5:46 and 5:47)

A lip curl signals the thought-emotions of:

• Bravado
• Hubris
• Braggadocio

A common paralanguage tell often accompanying a lip curl is a slight lisp - in the context of a person who doesn't typically have a lisp. Trump does tend to have this characteristic slight lisp simultaneous with his lip curls.

Just after he says, "... annnd, I always look for the — ah, conversation that's going to help the United States the most, that's very important", Trump exhibits another Tight Tongue Jut (additional disdain, disgust, distaste, and/or repulsion), (6:28).

Take care not to confuse a Tight Tongue Jut with a Loose Tongue Jut or a Wide Open Tongue — for all three behaviors have completely different meanings.

When asked (beginning at 6:26), "Do you know the identity of the whistleblower? Do you know the identity?"

The President responded, "I don't know the identity of the whistleblower, I just hear it's a partisan person — meaning it comes out from another party. But I don't have, ah, any idea. But I can say it's a totally appropriate conversation. It was actually a beautiful conversation — "

Donald Trump looked down to his right at many times during this segment of this video. One such episode occurred as he said, "have, ah" ("But I don't have, ah, any idea."), (6:37).

He looks down to his right once again (6:42) as he says, "It was" ("It was actually a beautiful conversation — ").

And once again after he says, "and all of those ridiculous charges and all of thee [sic] mistakes made at 'The New York Times' and other places ..." (6:55).

The lower right is the quadrant to which we often look when we're feeling Sadness, Shame, Guilt (both Guilt-Remorse and also Guilt-Culpability) — and Deception.

Why did Mr. Trump feel the need to define 'partisan'? This over-explaining behavior is a common verbal/paralanguage phenomenon accompanying deception. The lying psyche often rationalizes out loud.

Note also the detail of Trump's using the pronunciation 'thee', rather than 'the' (often followed by a pause). This stretching of the word is a common paralanguage tell often performed in the act of deceiving. It gives the speaker a split second (or longer) to formulate their lie.

A couple seconds after he says, "... and keep asking questions, and build it up as big as possible, so you can have a bigger downfall" — the President displays an amalgam of anger, regret, and anxiety (7:29).  Taken in isolation, in these couple seconds, it's difficult to differentiate between the feelings of:

• Regret arising from being caught
vs.
• Regret an unethical act

However, when taken in toto — in the context of the entire video, his feelings become clear. The President regrets being caught.

The President is projecting here — he feels the "built it up" and the "bigger downfall" apply to him. This Freudian slip is foretelling and particularly frightening.

Now go back — a second earlier (7:28), just after he said, "downfall". You'll see that the President, yet again, looked down to his right.

Another significant tell is Mr. Trump's claim, "I don't even know exactly who you're talking about" — and yet he also says, "But I can say it's a totally appropriate conversation. It was actually a beautiful conversation ..." — betraying that he knows the specific the conversation and alleged act which is being referenced.

SUMMARY: Not surprisingly, Donald Trump has significant disdain, disgust, and repulsion toward the Whistleblower. The President's body language — as well as his verbal and paralanguage behavior, indicate he's lying during the portion of the video analyzed above. He knows the Whistleblower's identity.

Crucially, the President exhibits cognitive-emotional dissonance, for while he displays braggadocio and hubris — he also shows significant fear and anxiety. Mr. Trump also regrets being caught.

The President's Freudian Slip — when he says, "... and keep asking questions, and build it up as big as possible, so you can have a bigger downfall"— is projection. He feels this advice applies to himself. It shows us he's a man sensing his own fall — and that he's desperate.

Body Language Analysis No. 4335: Donald Trump Jr. Interview Six weeks after Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This interview took place on 24 July 2016 - on the first day of Democratic National Convention - about six weeks after the Trump Tower meeting - and two days after WikiLeaks' release of 19,000 hacked Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails.

What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of Donald Trump Jr.'s behavior, concentrating on the first 95 seconds of this video.

JAKE TAPPER (continuing at 0:08): So, ahum, I don't know if you were hearing earlier, but ah, Robby Mook (SP?), the campaign manager for Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton - I asked him about the DNC leak and he suggested, ah, that experts are saying that Russians were behind both the, the leak - that, that the hacking, ah, of the DNC emails and their release. He seemed to be suggesting Ω, ah, that this is part of a plot to - help Donald Trump § and hurt Hillary Clinton . Your response.

DONALD TRUMP JR:  Well it just goes to show you their exact moral compass. I mean, they'll say anything to be able to win this. I mean, this is time and time again - lie after lie. Ya notice - he won't, 'Well, I say this', 'We hear experts' - ya know - his house cat at home once said that this is what's happening with the Russians. It's disgusting. It's so phony. I watched him bumble through the interview - I was able to hear it on audio a little bit. I mean, I can't think of bigger lies - but that exactly goes to show you what the DNC and what the Clinton camp will do. They will lie and do anything to win...

Note that about one second after Jake Tapper says the word, "Russians", Donald Trump Jr.'s rate of blinking dramatically increases for several seconds (during 0:23 - 0:27).

A sudden increase in blinking frequency (over baseline) is strongly correlated with anxiety.

During 0:26 - 0:27, although he tries to suppress it, Donald Trump Jr. smiles. He simultaneously shakes his head from side-to-side while blushing.

Blushing in the face of a partially suppressed smile is a profound red flag. This is very much an example of classic B-grade acting of pseudo-disgust. It screams guilt and deception. A person will (subconsciously) shake their head in such a setting because this physical activity will tend to break them out of a facial expression which they know makes them look guilty.

This moment of failed, suppressed smiling is obvious - but let's look again in more detail.

The image above was captured at 0:25, as Jake Tapper was saying, "... the ...". This is a textbook example of a microexpression of Duping Delight.

A microexpression is an extremely brief, but highly significant display of emotion. When you first see this, you might describe it as a "twitch" of Trump Jr.'s left cheek and lip.

But it doesn't stop here. During the early portions of this interview, while Mr. Tapper is asking his question, Trump Jr. displays an entire series of Microexpressions (and near-microexpressions) of duping delight.

Duping delight is the name given to the display of emotion by variations of subtly smiling which are seen when a person is experiencing joy-happiness in their belief that they have fooled you (duped you) in their effort to perpetrate a deception.

These are excellent examples - both of duping delight and microexpressions (and near-microexpressions), so take a moment to watch them several times (for they're impossible to capture in still images). First, watch with the sound on and at regular speed. Next, mute the sound and watch it at 1/2 and 1/4 speeds. Then watch it again at regular speed with the sound back on. Repeat this cycle a few times and view it a couple times a day for a week and periodically thereafter. You'll notice your ability to spot microexpressions in real time will be considerably improved.

Of course, not all microexpressions are of the duping delight variety. But virtually all emotions may be manifested in this subtle and fleeting, yet highly significant, manner.

Some of these dynamic expressions last slightly longer than is considered, by strict definition, to be a microexpression - but don't let this temporal technicality diminish the value of these tells.

Donald Trump Jr.  displays one of theses slightly longer, near-microexpressions, during 0:28 as Jake Tapper says, "their release". In this moment he's trying to suppress his smile by clenching his jaw muscles. Note his jaw is also jutting forward as the muscles on the front portion of his chin contract.

During 0:30, Donald Trump Jr. displays yet another microexpression of suppressed duping delight just after Jake Tapper says the word "suggesting" (notated above by the Ω symbol).

And another jaw-clenching attempt at suppressing his smile occurs during 0:32, just after Tapper says, "this is part of a plot to" (notated by the symbol). Tapper's words also elicit an extended blink of anxiety. Again, jaw jutting and muscle contraction and subsequent chin dimpling are displayed.

During 0:33, just after Tapper says, "help Donald Trump"Trump Jr., displays another variety of a microexpression, that of a Forward Lip Purse - indicating a withheld thought and/or clandestine plan ( § symbol).

Just after Tapper says, "and hurt Hillary Clinton" (during 0:35 and noted by the symbol), still another suppressed smile is visible. Donald Trump Jr. is also displaying a second, less prominent example of a forward lip purse in this instant.

Just before he answers Tapper (during 0:37 and notated with the symbol), Trump Jr. exhibits what is known as a Loose Tongue Jut - indicating the thought-emotions of "I've been bad", "I've been caught", "I've done a stupid thing" (Navarro).

Not to be overlooked, is Donald Trump Jr.'s verbal denial - it's melodramatic. He's giving only his opinions - not citing facts. When examined in isolation, such a hyperbolic response, does not on its own indicate deception - but it should, in many cases, raise suspicions. Such a verbal retort is analogous to a chef adding heavy sauce to steak - hoping you won't notice that it's a bit burnt.

Remember, Donald Trump Jr. is not being accused of anything here. This interview took place about six weeks after the Trump Tower meeting - but a full year before the public became aware of this now infamous Russians rendezvous. Are we to believe that Trump Jr.'s extreme response to Tapper's question is directed at the Clinton campaign staff? While they were his opponents, the magnitude of Trump Jr.'s words is very much out of context.

SUMMARY: Donald Trump Jr.'s nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behaviors displayed in this video indicate his responses were probably not due to his yet undiscovered Trump Tower meeting - but were instead, and with high probability, indications that he had foreknowledge of the Russian plan to hack the Democratic National Committee.

Body Language Analysis No. 4331: Donald Trump Speech Two Days Prior To Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 7 June 2016, two days prior to the now infamous Trump Tower meeting, Donald Trump gave a speech in Westchester, New York. A video of that speech is included above. It took place on the same night the presumptive Republican nominee won primaries in California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

What follows is a nonverbal analysis of a small but crucial portion of that speech - when Trump teased the electorate with the forthcoming release of damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Beginning at 7:02, Candidate Trump continues, "... I am going to give a major speech on - probably Monday of next week and we're going to be discussing all of the things that have taken place with the Clintons. I think you're going to find it very informative and very, very interesting."

About a second after he finishes this sentence (during 7:20), Donald Trump displays a profoundly telling nonverbal signal - a Loose Tongue Jut.

A loose tongue jut indicates the thought feelings of:

• I've been bad
• I've done a foolish thing
• I've been caught/I'm going to be caught

If we look carefully though, less than a second prior to this loose tongue jut (also during 7:20), we see another significant display - subtle, but just as insightful: a Tongue-in-Cheek maneuver.

A tongue-in-cheek dynamic projects the thought-feelings of:

• I Won
• Gotcha!
• Overlapping Smugness

Now, look at this wider angle image of the same moment. Ivanka Trump's body language was also noteworthy. Ms. Trump, who, three seconds earlier, had been looking at the audience:

• Turned her head, neck, and eyes toward her father
• Shifted back and forth on her feet
• Momentarily suppressed a mouth smile
• Pulled her cheeks inward
• Blushed slightly
• Narrowed her eyes (partially closed her eyelids)

Ivanka Trump held this facial expression for about two seconds. The action of pulling or sucking one's cheeks inward - often biting the insides of the cheeks mildly to moderately - is a common subconscious and edge-of-consciousness maneuver occurring during the suppression of smiling. At 7:23, Ms. Trump can't resist and then smiles fully.

This particular cluster pattern of suppressed smiling was an example of Duping Delight. She is experiencing sincere joy-happiness in her belief that she knows a secret. It would have been very natural and normal for context to smile when your father is the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee, yet she reigned-in her smile. Her blushing while biting/sucking in her cheeks are especially telling - and indicate that she was doing her best to maintain a poker face - to avoid divulging information. She wanted to keep clandestine.

SUMMARY: Donald Trump's nonverbal behavior during this speech is highly consistent with his belief that he's about to receive politically damaging information regarding Hillary Clinton. He is smug and giddy with anticipation. This speech took place two days prior to the 9 June 2016 Trump Tower Meeting - and four days after Donald Trump Jr and Rob Goldstone arranged the meeting.

Moreover, Ivanka Trump's simultaneous nonverbal behavior indicates with high probability, that she also had foreknowledge of the Trump Tower meeting.

Body Language & Emotional Intelligence - Analysis No. 4311: Jeff Sessions, "We never really intended to do that" - (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jeff Sessions' recent behavior could get him expelled from the Methodist Church. On 18 June 2018, 640 senior clergy of the United Methodist Church clergies brought charges against the Attorney General. Invoking paragraph 2702.3 of the United Methodist Book of Discipline, they charged Mr. Sessions with child abuse, immorality (including “the use of violence against children to deter immigration”), racial discrimination, and the dissemination of false doctrine counter to Methodist teachings (e.g., his use of the Bible verse Romans 13 in an attempt to legitimize President Trump's immigration policies).

On 21 June, Sessions appeared in an interview on Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) News. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a portion of that interview (a segment of which is included within the above MSNBC video).

JEFF SESSIONS (beginning at 0:56): ... It hasn't been good [Tight Tongue Jut] And the American people don't like the idea that we're separating families - ahum - we never really intended to do that. What we intended to do [sniff] was to ahum make sure that - adults who bring children into the country are [stutter, stammer] charged with the crime they've committed instead of giving that special group of adults immunity from prosecution - which is what, in effect, we were doing [sniff, Tight Tongue Jut] Ahum, so I think it's the right thing. We'll work our way through it ahum, - and try and do it in the most compassionate way possible.

Throughout much of his interview, Jeff Sessions displayed multiple examples of partially suppressed smiles.

This suppressed smile was captured during 1:03 after Sessions says, "... ahum - we never really intended to ..."

Consider the context of this interview:

• He's the Attorney General of the United States
• The issue at hand was the forcible separation of children from their parents - occurring at least 2300 times under his direction
• Most of the World is highly vocal and extremely critical of the Trump Administration's policy and actions on this matter
• The United Methodist Church has charged him with:
  1. Child abuse
  2. Violence against children to deter immigration
  3. Racial discrimination
  4. The dissemination of false doctrine

This image of a suppressed smile was captured during 1:14, Sessions says, "... crime ..."

Given these circumstances, any smiling is extremely out of context behavior. Why then is Jeff Sessions smiling? We are left with the following conclusions:

• Attorney General Sessions' smiling is a manifestation of Deception - a phenomenon known as "Duping Delight" - where a person takes pleasure in their belief that fooled others into believing their lie (We know that he's lying based on other well documented/videoed statements he and the Trump Administration have made).

and/or

• Jeff Sessions is taking pleasure, true Joy-Happiness in the forcible separations of children from their parents

Additional tells we see during this portion of his interview:

• Stammering/Stuttering (indicative of significantly high anxiety)
• Sniffing
• Tight Tongue Juts

This is a Tight Tongue Jut (indicating Disdain, Disgust, Repulsion) during 0:58, just after Sessions says, "It hasn't been good".

During 1:05, just after AG Sessions says, "... the American people don't like the idea that we're separating families - ahum - we never really intended to do that. What we intended to do ..."
- he sniffs deeply.

When there are no infections or allergies present, sniffing is an extremely common indicator of anxiety. Moreover, taken in toto with the other signals present - and given the timing/coordination of his sniffing with his verbal statement - it's also highly correlative with deception.

In addition, Sessions is also displaying a Forward Lip Purse in this moment - indicating a Clandestine Disagreement or Clandestine Plan. This nonverbal sign is ALWAYS a red flag that whatever the person is saying - it's vastly different vs. what they're thinking-feeling.

During 1:22, just after he says, "...instead of giving that special group of adults immunity from prosecution - which is what, in effect, we were doing ...", Sessions makes another Sniffing Display - in conjunction with another Tight Tongue Jut.

SUMMARY: Jeff Sessions is lying during this interview. You don't need to be a body language expert to know that - you simply have to watch/listen to his previous videoed statements. Yet this short display serves as an excellent nonverbal teaching example - for we don't always have such ample evidence.

Moreover, he has clear disgust, disdain, and repulsion for the people who are immigrating. Sessions is also very possibly taking true pleasure in others' suffering.

Body Language Analysis No. 4268: Benedict Cumberbatch, Schadenfreude, and The Grinch - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Benedict Cumberbatch inadvertently demonstrated how difficult it can be to successfully tell a lie - even in a well-trained paid profession.

GRAHAM NORTON (beginning at 0:00): You say you're good at keeping plots secrets 'n things, but you were a bit loose-lipped about the plot for Star Trek.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: [Lip smack] To one, one person - yeah, who I thought deserved to know - and that was Stephen Hawking. Ahum, we were - into our third margarita I think - and - I decided to tell him - and he literally, apart from the agents who told me the news - and the people who were employing me were the only people who were supposed to know [deep inhale] so - yeah I told him.

GRAHAM NORTON: Wow. Did he tell anyone else?

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: Ω Not as far as I'm aware ,

During 0:28 ( ), just after Cumberbatch says, "Not as far as I'm aware" - he displays a specific variation of a suppressed smile (e.g., Duping Delight) known as a Schadenfreude Smile.

This phenomenon is called "Duping Delight", because the person is taking true joy in the thought that he is duping (fooling) his audience.

Here, the Schadenfreude Smile is hyperbolically expressed in the classic, 1966 animation - and has thus also has been come to be Known as The Grinch Smile (named for the diabolical version of the Dr. Seuss character).

Perhaps Cumberbatch was channeling the character in whom he plays the starring role in the upcoming 2018 rendition of The Grinch.

Despite the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch is an extremely skilled and accomplished actor - his attempt at suppressing his delight fails - lasting less than a second before he breaks into laughter (during 0:29, ).

Note that while sincere smiling does NOT show bottom teeth - fully expressed sincere laughter does indeed reveal them.

If we go back just a bit to the 0:25 mark, just prior to Mr. Cumberbatch saying, "... I told him", we see the actor displaying another, less obvious suppressed smile ( ).

During 0:28, Just after Graham Norton asks, "Did he tell anyone else?", Cumberbatch also looks up to his left ( Ω ).

Upon being asked a question about a past event, when a right-handed person looks up to their left - they are visually recalling a specific memory (Cumberbatch is right-hand dominant). Thus, while not 100% definitive, in this context, this dynamic is highly suggestive of a distinct act of Hawking's - wherein the Physicist DID TELL, in fact, someone else the Star Trek plot.

Summary: Taken in toto - Benedict Cumberbatch's cluster of nonverbal behavior in this brief clip - indicates that the actor is lying when he claimed Stephen Hawking kept his secret of the plot to Star Trek.

Despite being an outstanding actor - when he's lying in off-screen scenarios, (when Benedict is just being Benedict - not "in character") - he's no better at suppressing his body language during deception than most anyone on the street. The same truth would hold even if he had ten Oscars to his credit.
