Body Language Analysis No. 4335: Donald Trump Jr. Interview Six weeks after Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This interview took place on 24 July 2016 - on the first day of Democratic National Convention - about six weeks after the Trump Tower meeting - and two days after WikiLeaks' release of 19,000 hacked Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails.

What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of Donald Trump Jr.'s behavior, concentrating on the first 95 seconds of this video. 

JAKE TAPPER (continuing at 0:08): So, ahum, I don't know if you were hearing earlier, but ah, Robby Mook (SP?), the campaign manager for Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton - I asked him about the DNC leak and he suggested, ah, that experts are saying that Russians were behind both the, the leak - that, that the hacking, ah, of the DNC emails and their release. He seemed to be suggesting Ω, ah, that this is part of a plot to ∆ - help Donald Trump § and hurt Hillary Clinton ¶. Your response. 

DONALD TRUMP JR:  ∂ Well it just goes to show you their exact moral compass. I mean, they'll say anything to be able to win this. I mean, this is time and time again - lie after lie. Ya notice - he won't, 'Well, I say this', 'We hear experts' - ya know - his house cat at home once said that this is what's happening with the Russians. It's disgusting. It's so phony. I watched him bumble through the interview - I was able to hear it on audio a little bit. I mean, I can't think of bigger lies - but that exactly goes to show you what the DNC and what the Clinton camp will do. They will lie and do anything to win... 

Note that about one second after Jake Tapper says the word, "Russians", Donald Trump Jr.'s rate of blinking dramatically increases for several seconds (during 0:23 - 0:27).

A sudden increase in blinking frequency (over baseline) is strongly correlated with anxiety.

During 0:26 - 0:27, although he tries to suppress it, Donald Trump Jr. smiles. He simultaneously shakes his head from side-to-side while blushing.

Blushing in the face of a partially suppressed smile is a profound red flag. This is very much an example of classic B-grade acting of pseudo-disgust. It screams guilt and deception. A person will (subconsciously) shake their head in such a setting because this physical activity will tend to break them out of a facial expression which they know makes them look guilty.

This moment of failed, suppressed smiling is obvious - but let's look again in more detail.

The image above was captured at 0:25, as Jake Tapper was saying, "... the ...". This is a textbook example of a microexpression of Duping Delight.

A microexpression is an extremely brief, but highly significant display of emotion. When you first see this, you might describe it as a "twitch" of Trump Jr.'s left cheek and lip.

But it doesn't stop here. During the early portions of this interview, while Mr. Tapper is asking his question, Trump Jr. displays an entire series of Microexpressions (and near-microexpressions) of duping delight.

Duping delight is the name given to the display of emotion by variations of subtly smiling which are seen when a person is experiencing joy-happiness in their belief that they have fooled you (duped you) in their effort to perpetrate a deception.

These are excellent examples - both of duping delight and microexpressions (and near-microexpressions), so take a moment to watch them several times (for they're impossible to capture in still images). First, watch with the sound on and at regular speed. Next, mute the sound and watch it at 1/2 and 1/4 speeds. Then watch it again at regular speed with the sound back on. Repeat this cycle a few times and view it a couple times a day for a week and periodically thereafter. You'll notice your ability to spot microexpressions in real time will be considerably improved.

Of course, not all microexpressions are of the duping delight variety. But virtually all emotions may be manifested in this subtle and fleeting, yet highly significant, manner.

Some of these dynamic expressions last slightly longer than is considered, by strict definition, to be a microexpression - but don't let this temporal technicality diminish the value of these tells.  

Donald Trump Jr.  displays one of theses slightly longer, near-microexpressions, during 0:28 as Jake Tapper says, "their release". In this moment he's trying to suppress his smile by clenching his jaw muscles. Note his jaw is also jutting forward as the muscles on the front portion of his chin contract.

During 0:30, Donald Trump Jr. displays yet another microexpression of suppressed duping delight just after Jake Tapper says the word "suggesting" (notated above by the Ω symbol).

And another jaw-clenching attempt at suppressing his smile occurs during 0:32, just after Tapper says, "this is part of a plot to" (notated by the ∆ symbol). Tapper's words also elicit an extended blink of anxiety. Again, jaw jutting and muscle contraction and subsequent chin dimpling are displayed.

During 0:33, just after Tapper says, "help Donald Trump",  Trump Jr., displays another variety of a microexpression, that of a Forward Lip Purse - indicating a withheld thought and/or clandestine plan ( § symbol).

Just after Tapper says, "and hurt Hillary Clinton" (during 0:35 and noted by the ¶ symbol), still another suppressed smile is visible. Donald Trump Jr. is also displaying a second, less prominent example of a forward lip purse in this instant.

Just before he answers Tapper (during 0:37 and notated with the ∂ symbol), Trump Jr. exhibits what is known as a Loose Tongue Jut - indicating the thought-emotions of "I've been bad", "I've been caught", "I've done a stupid thing" (Navarro).

Not to be overlooked, is Donald Trump Jr.'s verbal denial - it's melodramatic. He's giving only his opinions - not citing facts. When examined in isolation, such a hyperbolic response, does not on its own indicate deception - but it should, in many cases, raise suspicions. Such a verbal retort is analogous to a chef adding heavy sauce to steak - hoping you won't notice that it's a bit burnt.

Remember, Donald Trump Jr. is not being accused of anything here. This interview took place about six weeks after the Trump Tower meeting - but a full year before the public became aware of this now infamous Russians rendezvous. Are we to believe that Trump Jr.'s extreme response to Tapper's question is directed at the Clinton campaign staff? While they were his opponents, the magnitude of Trump Jr.'s words is very much out of context.

SUMMARY: Donald Trump Jr.'s nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behaviors displayed in this video indicate his responses were probably not due to his yet undiscovered Trump Tower meeting - but were instead, and with high probability, indications that he had foreknowledge of the Russian plan to hack the Democratic National Committee.

Body Language Analysis No. 4333: Ivanka Trump's response to Robert Mueller and Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, Axios' Mike Allen interviewed the eldest first daughter and presidential advisor, Ivanka Trump. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a key portion of Ms. Trump's reaction to Robert Mueller and the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

MIKE ALLEN: Last question and then we're gonna, ah, have Jonathan Swan - have you talked to Robert Mueller or his team? And did you - know Ω about the Trump Tower meeting in June twenty Ω sixteen before it happened? Or did you see any of those visitors?

IVANKA TRUMP: [Positions her mouth to answer, pauses, smiles-laughs, blushes, then answers] No ∆ and No ∆

MIKE ALLEN: Jonathan Swan? Ahum, the great Jonathan Swan is gonna pick up on anything missed, nixed, orrr botched here. Go ahead Jonathan. 

IVANKA TRUMP: And by 'See any of those visitors', I assume - I've seen my husband. And I've se-ee-ee-en [laughing] § [gestures right hand, palm-forward and tilted-down toward journalist in a dominance/refuting display as she laughs] and I've seen my brother [laughing, now with a two-handed palm forward display] §§ but - No.

MIKE ALLEN: But you didn't talk to any of the Russian visitors from there, right?

IVANKA TRUMP: No-o-oh [Laughing, shaking head side-to-side, in a "No" illustrator, blushing deeply]

Very early in this video, during 0:05 as the Journalist says the word, "... know ...", Ivanka Trump displays a subtle yet highly significant microexpression display.

Microexpressions are very short-lived facial movements indicating specific emotions. This particular microexpression was a manifestation of anxiety-fear.

A couple seconds later, during 0:07 as the Journalist says the word, "... twenty ...", Ivanka Trump displays a second microexpression of anxiety-fear. This example is more subtle.

Each of these is notated by the Ω symbol.

Please watch these at regular speed, at 1/2, and at 1/4 speed - then once again at regular speed. Repeat this cycle several times. This practice will increase your ability to detect this and other microexpressions in real-time.

After the Journalist finishes asking his initial question, just after he says, "... Or did you see any of those visitors?", Ivanka Trump positions her mouth to answer. She then pauses. The image immediately above captures the moment she held her mouth configuration as she paused (during 0:10).

This is a stalling behavior tactic and it's rarely fully conscious. Ivanka's psyche is caught off guard and even though her answer is a simple denial, she needs more time to formulate it.

Note also that she's looking up to slightly to her left. This is the quadrant most right-handed people look toward when they're recalling a visual memory (Ms. Trump is right-handed).

She then smiles, laughs, blushes (during 0:11), then proceeds to answer.

The subject matter at hand is one of national security and is not humorous - either from the point-of-view of the average person watching - or if one had been falsely accused in a conspiracy.

Her laughter is a brief, breathy chuckle. Her smile is accompanied by a deep and long-lasting blush.

She then does something contradictory and profoundly telling. Ivanka Trump nods her head up-and-down in a characteristic "Yes" gesture (illustrator) while speaking her answer, "No." She does this during 0:12 and again during 0:14.

These actions are notated in the dialog by the ∆ symbols.

Whenever nonverbal behavior is disparate with one's verbal behavior, it's the nonverbal language which tells their true feelings. Her up-and-down nodding (yes) was an affirmation. 

A detail not to be lost here, and which is also a microexpression - is Ms. Trump's evanescent Lip Pursing - which is particularly evident during the second "No" (0:14, image immediately above).

A Forward Lip Purse indicates a withheld (secret) disagreement and/or a clandestine plan.

Ms. Trump gestures with her right hand (during 0:28), palm forward and tilted downward in a dominant gesture just after she says, "And by 'See any of those visitors', I assume - I've seen my husband. And I've se-ee-ee-en [laughing]".

This illustrator is notated in the dialog by a single § symbol.

This illustrator is repeated with both hands just after Ms. Trump says, "... and I've seen my brother ..." (notated by the double §§ symbol, during 0:29)

These palm-out, tilted-downward, gestures are refuting, dominating displays.

Ivanka Trump's laughing is forced and feigned - but her blushing is very real. Blushing is always significant and it can't be faked.

Ms. Trump's faux laughing is melodramatic and extremely out-of-context. This is not an occasion to laugh - whether she is guilty or innocent. Coupled with her deep and prolonged blushing, it's highly indicative of anxiety and deception.

This is a classic example of Queen Gertrude's observation in Shakespeare's Hamlet, "The Lady doth protest too much, methinks." And this too is a play within a play.

Note as Ms. Trump turns (mostly with her head, neck, and eyes - but less so with her torso) toward Jonathan Swan - and as he asks his question, she maintains a high level of anxiety. She must 'burn off' her excess adrenaline and she accomplishes this by nodding her head up and down with a relatively high frequency - during his question from 0:42 - 0:44, 0:48 - 1:03, and 1:05 - 1:06. 


SUMMARY: Ivanka Trump's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior displayed in this video demonstrates that, with extremely high probability, she is being deceptive and did have foreknowledge of the 9 June 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

Body Language Analysis No. 4329: Donald Trump Jr.'s Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

 
On 14 July 2017, the World learned that at least one additional person attended the 9 June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, and Natalia Veselnitskaya. The President's son failed to disclose that Mr. Rinat Akhmetshin was also present.

Mr. Akhmetshin is a Russian-American lobbyist - as well as a former Soviet counterintelligence officer. He's also suspected to have continued ties with Russian intelligence.

But was anyone else in the room? Did Donald Trump authorize this meeting?

The video above is a segment of Sean Hannity's interview of Donald Trump Jr. from 11 July 2017. Their entire exchange lasted almost 20 minutes, however, a partial nonverbal analysis of a small, but crucial segment is included here.


HANNITY (continuing at 2:07): You said in a tweet, you would fully cooperate with any investigation

TRUMP JR: Of course

HANNITY: Completely

TRUMP JR: hundred percent

HANNITY: Turn over everything that they want - and you feel you already have

TRUMP JR: I be- [stuttering] Yes

HANNITY: Yeah, and you have nothing to hide - you wanna be - that means you'll testify under oath - all of that

TRUMP JR: All of it

HANNITY: Yeah

At the end of Sean Hannity's sentence (2:16), "Turn over everything that they want - and you feel you already have", Donald Trump Jr. looks down and to his right. When eye contact momentarily diminishes during deception, the gaze most often deviates in this direction/quadrant.

Of monumental importance - Donald Trump Jr.'s mouth also momentarily adopts a Pursed Lip Configuration - more specifically a Forward Lip Purse (not to be confused with a Lateral Lip Purse).

A forward lip purse indicates a withheld disagreement and/or a clandestine plan.

Moreover, those who display the forward lip purse believe that they're the alpha - superior to those with whom they're speaking (or here, those who may be watching - the viewing audience - the betas).

In addition, individuals displaying a forward lip purse believe they have a good chance of successfully implementing and carrying out their plans.

You may have also noticed Donald Trump Jr. blinking with significantly increased frequency and duration. During this particularly long blink, he's looking straight down (the second most common direction of gaze deviation during deception) - as he says, "Yes" (2:16).

Immediately after saying, "I b- [stuttering] Yes", Donald Trump Jr. smiles - yet his mouth is asymmetrical (correlative with insincerity) - and of profound importance, he's simultaneously blushing (his blushing is easier to visualize in the dynamic context of the video).

Now, go back and watch the movement of Donald Trump Jr.'s head and neck when Sean Hannity asks, "You said in a tweet, you would fully cooperate with any investigation" - and "Completely" - as well as "Turn over everything that they want - and you feel you already have" and "that means you'll testify under oath - all of that" - after each of these prompts from Hannity, Donald Trump Jr. shook his head side-to-side in a classic "NO" gesture (illustrator). This is a five-alarm fire. Trump Jr. is very clearly disagreeing with Hannity's statements. The President's son's nonverbal behavior is saying that he won't cooperate and that he won't turn over everything to Robert Meuller.

This dynamic is impossible to capture in still images. Please watch the video to fully appreciate this behavior.

Looking further, you'll also note that Trump Jr. shrugs his shoulders very frequently during this entire interview (indicating very low confidence).

Donald Trump Jr.'s nonverbal cluster in this short exchange encompasses variations of diminished eye contact including:

• Blinking with increased frequency and duration
• Looking Down to his Right
• Looking Straight Down 
• Closing his eyes while saying, "Yes"

In addition, he displays:

• Forward Lip Pursing
• Stuttering
• Asymmetrical Smiling
• Blushing while smiling after saying "Yes"
• Very frequent shoulder shrugging throughout this entire interview
• Shaking his head side-to-side,"NO" - when he should have been nodding up-and-down, "Yes"

SUMMARY: Donald Trump, Jr.'s nonverbal behavior exhibited in this video is highly indicative of deception. The act of blushing during a smile (following an eyelid closure while saying, "yes")- as well as multiple displays of nodding "No" rather than "Yes" - and also forward lip pursing in the contexts described above - are all particularly damning signals.

Donald Trump Jr.'s nonverbal behavior in this interview also indicated, with a high degree of certainty, that an undisclosed strategy was being planned and/or executed.

Actors take note - for in an alternative reality, this clip could be used in a movie scene portraying quintessential guilt.

Body Language Analysis No. 4322: Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

To date, this is one of the most widely shared images of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. It was taken during the APEC Summit in Danang, Vietnam on 11 November 2017.

From a nonverbal perspective, it's particularly telling. Vladimir Putin's expression is that of a partial, yet sincere smile with the necessary components of:

• Partially closed eyelids
• Concave-up furrows in each lower eyelid
• Partial mouth smile
• A relaxed forehead (while he does have age-related, passive "wrinkles", Putin's forehead muscles are not actively contracting)

President Putin's smile is not fully developed - and crucially, he's trying to suppress it. And as often occurs when one is suppressing a smile - blushing ensues.

Blushing cannot be consciously controlled.

Of course, blushing is NOT a requirement in order for a smile to be considered sincere - and all blushing does not coexist with a smile. However, if a person is blushing whilst smiling, their smile is virtually ALWAYS sincere.

It's profoundly important to keep in mind that you may not share the other person's motives for their smile or welcome their actions. What brings them joy-happiness won't necessarily do the same for you.

In this context, Mr. Putin's blushing likely is indicative of:

• Deception
• Clandestine motives/plans
• Difficulty containing his excitement 

Much less likely causes include:

• Embarrassment
• Nervousness/Anxiety

Summary: The phenomenon of blushing is involuntary and uncontrollable, even by former KGB officers. Blushing is a signal that control has temporarily been lost. The person is letting a thought-emotion slip through - one which they would much rather conceal. Blushing during a smile always conveys the sincerity of the smile - but be warned, for it does not speak to the purity/ethics of their motives. This phenomenon is often significant for an incongruity versus their simultaneous spoken words. It's a literal and metaphorical red flag. During such disparities between nonverbal and verbal messages - it's the nonverbal language which is telling the truth.

Body Language Analysis No. 4280: David Beckham, Princess Leia, and Embarrassment - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This episode of The Graham Norton Show was filmed just before Carrie Fisher passed away. It's hilarious - while also providing an excellent set of nonverbal teaching examples.

This image captured at 0:29 demonstrates that David Beckham not only had foreknowledge of Graham Norton disclosing something for which he anticipates embarrassment - but he recognizes the need for him to Dial-Up his Alpha. Such false adjustment/straining of one's jacket (one of many preening behaviors) is a signal of the need for Alpha-Upregulation.

During 0:36 - 0:37, Beckham scratches his left anterior temple region - at the lateral aspect of his left eye. This is a classic anxiety tell - and more specifically, it also projects the athlete's feelings that he does not believe he is/was the "Sexiest Man Alive."

Intriguingly, a few seconds later (0:42 - 0:44), Graham Norton mirrors Beckham's behavior - as well as his belief.

Beckham blushes multiple times during this interview (here captured during 1:04). Individuals who blush easier tend to have considerably higher sincerity quotients compared with those who rarely blush.

Easy-blushers are also easier to "read" even when they're not blushing.

After John Boyega denies being aware that he was featured in the same magazine as Beckham, we see him display a Loose Tongue Jut (1:25). This nonverbal signal projects the thought-emotions of "I've been caught", "I've been bad", "I've just done something stupid" (Navarro). More specifically, in this context, his Loose Tongue Jut tells betrays his lie.

After Norton asks, "How many times a day?" (1:53 - 1:55) - both Beckham and Fisher close their eyes (more emotional processing) while simultaneously blushing (Beckham more so). Carrie Fisher's act of looking away along with her partial facial covering - are additional signals of emotional processing (e.g., "I know what he just said, but give me a few moments for my feelings to catch up with my intellect").

This is the second analysis of OJ Simpson from the recently aired The Lost Confession. The interview was conducted in 2006. What follows is another analysis of a few key moments of this exchange.

JUDITH REGAN (beginning at 46:52): You park in the alley -

OJ SIMPSON: Yeah

JUDITH REGAN: And - you put on - a wool cap and gloves -

OJ SIMPSON: Ahhh - in the hypothetical, I put on a cap and gloves - yeah

JUDITH REGAN: Right. And, ahum - you reached under the seat for -

OJ SIMPSON: Ahhh - a knife. I always kept a knife in that car for the crazies and stuff - 'cause you can't travel with a gun ...

As he says, "Ahhh - in the hypothetical, I put on a cap and gloves - yeah", Simpson first smiles (47:01) - sincerely but partially suppressed -

And then very briefly laughs (47:02)

Then, during 47:04, we see Simpson display another sincere smile. Note that teeth do NOT have to be exposed in order for a smile to be sincere (but when teeth ARE showing, the vast majority of times, it should only be the upper teeth [exceptions include when there is a crescendoing to - or decrescendoing from sincere laughter, a downward tilted head/neck, and/or an elevated camera/viewing angle]).

The other components of a Sincere Smile (aka Duchenne Smile) - and all displayed here are:

• Relaxed (noncontracted) Forehead Muscles
• Partially closed eyelids
• Concave-up, dynamic furrows in the lower eyelids
• Contracted Cheek Muscles (Zygomaticus major)
• Upward-Vectored mouth corners

Two components which are not required for a sincere smile, but are often simultaneous - and are also displayed here include:

• Dimples: The majority of times, those individuals who form dimples will do so during sincere smiles - but this is not always the case.
• Blushing: Although not required for a sincere smile, when blushing occurs in the presence of a smile, the smile is ALWAYS a Sincere one - and here it betrays Simpson's Embarrassment, Deception, and Guilt.

During 47:05, Simpson then displays an evanescent but crucial expression - a Forward Lip Purse (not to be confused with a Lateral Lip Purse). Because this is so brief, it's also classified as a Microexpression.

A Forward Lip Purse is one profoundly important nonverbal example of Hesitancy to Disclose - more specifically, it signals a Clandestine Disagreement and/or a Clandestine Plan.

Notice too, that Simpson is still suppressing his smile - while continuing his blushing.

Moreover, OJ Simpson also blinks frequently during 47:04 - 47:06. Blinking more frequently (above a person's baseline rate) is a non-specific signal of Anxiety.

During 47:06, we see another brief nonverbal display - this time of Anger (although here, it's not short-lived enough to be classified as a Microexpression) - as Simpson's eyebrows are lowered and also drawn together.

During 47:07, Simpson then contracts his lips (more so his lower lip) over his teeth in a classic Tight-Lipped Display.

This is another nonverbal signal of a Hesitancy to Disclose. The term "Tight-Lipped" is an idiom which is believed to have been coined by one of the most astute observers of human nature in history - William Shakespeare.

Duping Delight (Ekman) is a term used to describe one form of a Suppressed Smile - when the Smile is Out of Context - and during the perpetration of a lie. It signals the emotional dissonance of a person who's experiencing true joy-happiness in the belief that they perpetrating a lie - but not getting caught - and yet the simultaneous desire to not smile too much (lest they disclose their deception).

At times OJ Simpson seemed not to care about smiling and laughing out-of-context. At other times he tried (unsuccessfully) to suppress his smile. 

Summary: This brief nonverbal cluster of OJ Simpson shows him displaying various degrees of sincere smiling - and blushing - yet highly out of context. In addition, Simpson displays several signals indicating his hesitancy to disclose information. In this setting, such behavior is highly correlated with deception.

Chillingly, Simpson is taking pleasure in an action which few other people would find joyful - attempting to hide and/or believing he is hiding his guilt in the murder of two people - Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
