Body Language Analysis No. 4389: Jeffrey Epstein's Default Expression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on Saturday 6 July 2019 for allegedly sex-trafficking dozens of minors in Florida and New York between 2002 and 2005. He will appear in federal court in New York today. He's an American financier and registered sex offender. Epstein has multiple US residences, including one in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was initially employed at the investment bank Bear Stearns - and left to start his own firm, J. Epstein & Co. As a hedge fund manager, he became a billionaire.

In 2008, Epstein was convicted of soliciting an underage girl for prostitution - for which he served thirteen months of a suspiciously lenient eighteen-month sentence. Moreover, he was allowed to spend twelve hours a day, six days a week outside of confinement, in his personal office, on a "work release". It's also important to note, he was not in prison - but rather when confined, he was in a private wing of a Palm Beach County, Florida jail.

Most all human beings have a default facial expression which is neutral - not Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein's face tends to adopt a peculiar default expression. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of this behavior.

The majority of people would say that Epstein is not smiling in the above image - even though his mouth corners are up-turned - and they would be 100% correct. The outside/lateral portions of his upper and lower lips are brought together - while the more anterior/medial aspects of his lips are pursed - and protruding mildly forward. Not surprisingly, this is known as a Forward Lip Purse.

A forward lip purse (not to be confused with a lateral lip purse) indicates the withholding of information (i.e., a clandestine disagreement and/or a hidden plan). In addition, a forward lip purse is only displayed when a person believes they have a good chance of success in carrying out their covert actions.

Only a person who perceives themselves to be an alpha/the dominant personality present displays a forward lip purse. A person in the midst of a beta emotional moment never makes this expression.

If one is expecting or presuming honesty, the presence of a forward lip purse should NEVER be displayed. In a marriage, a business partnership, in a courtroom witness, a politician, etc. - a forward lip purse is a profound red flag. This point cannot be overemphasized.

Note also, Epstein's eyes - they are partially closed. In particular, his lower eyelids are displaying some moderate degree of tension and his eyebrows are lowered. These eye-related findings indicate disagreement and a mild, but suppressed anger.

Take care not to confuse a forward lip purse with a lateral lip purse - for they have completely different meanings.

Contrast Epstein's lower eyelids in this second image with those in the first photo.

We see a concave-up furrow in each lower eyelid together with partially closed lids. Epstein's mouth still has the forward lip purse displayed along with the peculiar pressing together of his outer/lateral portions of his lips - although this characteristic is somewhat less pronounced in this example.

Most people would identify this as a smile - and they'd be correct. It's a true/sincere smile (a Duchenne Smile). Yet, crucially, sincerity does not indicate ethical motives. Because Epstein continues to display a forward lip purse - we know he is taking joy-happiness in his surreptitious plans.

This next image is similar to the previous one - but Epstein's smile is not as sincere (or possibly it's decrescendoing) - as his eyes are opened slightly wider and his superimposed forward lip purse is more pronounced. Note its somewhat spooky similarity to the Batman character's, The Joker's smile.

Whenever you see this expression - don't trust it.

In this fourth and final image, we again see Epstein again making a forward lip purse, however - similar to the first photo, his expression also has a component of anger. The downward tilt of his head and the further, tense closing of his eyelids - both indicate he's feeling angrier compared with the first example.

Epstein's lateral gaze - colloquially known as a Side Eye - is a classic gaze pattern shown by all human beings when we're looking at someone who we:

• Don't like
• Don't trust/don't believe
• Don't respect

Note too, the slightly greater tension of the tissue beneath his nose and above his upper lip (the mustache area). This finding is also consistent with anger.

Epstein's right head tilt (his right) could be his attempt at appearing sincere - a technique sometimes employed by sociopaths. Another highly possible etiology could be a congenital, left IV Cranial Nerve palsy (aka a Trochlear Nerve Palsy) - an ailment which is not uncommon.

SUMMARY:  Jeffrey Epstein's default expression, a Forward Lip Purse, indicates his withholding of information - that of a hidden plan and/or an undisclosed disagreement. In these images, the Billionaire believed himself to be alpha/dominant and those with whom he was interacting to be beta/subordinate. He was hyper-confident/arrogant in his belief of success in initiating and executing his furtive acts.

Everyday insincere default expressions are truly forms of living masks worn by "regular" people all around us - and yet these feigned feelings frequently go unrecognized.

It's crucial to emphasize that none of the expressions shown here are indications of - or correlate specifically with sex-related crimes.

Yet it's also important to stress, regardless of your endeavors - whether you're a playing Monopoly, speaking to your spouse, counseling a patient, cross-examining a witness, or negotiating with a criminal for the release of a hostage - when your opposition displays a forward lip purse - protect your flank.

Body Language Analysis No. 4268: Benedict Cumberbatch, Schadenfreude, and The Grinch - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Benedict Cumberbatch inadvertently demonstrated how difficult it can be to successfully tell a lie - even in a well-trained paid profession.

GRAHAM NORTON (beginning at 0:00): You say you're good at keeping plots secrets 'n things, but you were a bit loose-lipped about the plot for Star Trek.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: [Lip smack] To one, one person - yeah, who I thought deserved to know - and that was Stephen Hawking. Ahum, we were - into our third margarita I think - and - I decided to tell him - and he literally, apart from the agents who told me the news - and the people who were employing me were the only people who were supposed to know [deep inhale] so - yeah I told him.

GRAHAM NORTON: Wow. Did he tell anyone else?

BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH: Ω Not as far as I'm aware ,

During 0:28 ( ), just after Cumberbatch says, "Not as far as I'm aware" - he displays a specific variation of a suppressed smile (e.g., Duping Delight) known as a Schadenfreude Smile.

This phenomenon is called "Duping Delight", because the person is taking true joy in the thought that he is duping (fooling) his audience.

Here, the Schadenfreude Smile is hyperbolically expressed in the classic, 1966 animation - and has thus also has been come to be Known as The Grinch Smile (named for the diabolical version of the Dr. Seuss character).

Perhaps Cumberbatch was channeling the character in whom he plays the starring role in the upcoming 2018 rendition of The Grinch.

Despite the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch is an extremely skilled and accomplished actor - his attempt at suppressing his delight fails - lasting less than a second before he breaks into laughter (during 0:29, ).

Note that while sincere smiling does NOT show bottom teeth - fully expressed sincere laughter does indeed reveal them.

If we go back just a bit to the 0:25 mark, just prior to Mr. Cumberbatch saying, "... I told him", we see the actor displaying another, less obvious suppressed smile ( ).

During 0:28, Just after Graham Norton asks, "Did he tell anyone else?", Cumberbatch also looks up to his left ( Ω ).

Upon being asked a question about a past event, when a right-handed person looks up to their left - they are visually recalling a specific memory (Cumberbatch is right-hand dominant). Thus, while not 100% definitive, in this context, this dynamic is highly suggestive of a distinct act of Hawking's - wherein the Physicist DID TELL, in fact, someone else the Star Trek plot.

Summary: Taken in toto - Benedict Cumberbatch's cluster of nonverbal behavior in this brief clip - indicates that the actor is lying when he claimed Stephen Hawking kept his secret of the plot to Star Trek.

Despite being an outstanding actor - when he's lying in off-screen scenarios, (when Benedict is just being Benedict - not "in character") - he's no better at suppressing his body language during deception than most anyone on the street. The same truth would hold even if he had ten Oscars to his credit.

Body Language Analysis No. 3996: (REPOSTING) Donald Trump Jr.'s and Natalia Veselnitskaya's meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Multiple requests for a re-posting of this article (from 2017) have been made in the last several days. It's included here in its entirety (with updated cross-reference links at the end of the article).

In this interview released earlier today, Natalia Veselnitskaya responds to questions regarding her  meeting on 9 June 2016 with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and then Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

Beginning at 0:14, the journalist says, "Here, Donald Trump Jr. is told, that they want to schedule a meeting with him and the Russian government attorney who is flying over from Moscow [pause]. The Russian government attorney..."

During 0:26 - 0:28, as the journalist repeats, "The Russian government attorney", Ms. Veselnitskaya, suppresses a smile, exhales through her nostrils, shakes her head from side-to-side, and blushes (image above).

This body language cluster - particularly the suppression of a sincere smile with blushing - is a very strong indicator of guilt. It's nonverbally screaming, "I've been caught!"

Please watch this segment several times as the still image does not capture her entire display.

Later in the interview, the journalist says, "... they had the impression, it appears, that they were going to be told some information, that you had [microexpression of fear]- about the DNC ..."

During 1:43, just after the journalist says "had" - and during the first syllable of "about", Natalia Veselnitskaya's superficial neck muscle (the Platysma) flexes very briefly - (this is best seen on her right neck) - in what is known as a microexpression. This particular microexpression is that of fear. As with the earlier tell, this is subtle but very revealing and must be viewed in the dynamic context of the video. At first glance, you may confuse this with a swallow ("hard swallow") - but it's not - watch carefully. Colloquially, this nonverbal display is known as, the "Neck of Fear".

Summary: Natalia Veselnitskaya's nonverbal behavior in this interview tells us, with a very high degree of confidence, that she acted as an agent of the Russian Government when she met with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort on 9 June 2016. More specifically, she exhibited deception and fear during this interview.

Body Language Analysis No. 4085: Donald Trump's "Calm Before the Storm" Comment - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday 5 October 2017, just prior to a dinner with high-level US military personnel and their spouses, President Trump made a cryptic and rather disconcerting statement alluding to, "The calm before the storm".

What follows is that brief dialog followed by a partial nonverbal analysis.

PRESIDENT TRUMP (beginning at 0:00): You guys know what this represents?

JOURNALIST A: No.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: I don't kn - Maybe it’s the calm before the storm. Ω  µ

JOURNALIST B: What’s the storm of?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Could be - the calm - the calm before the storm.

JOURNALIST C (over-talking): What is it?

JOURNALIST D: On Iran? On ISIS? On what?

JOURNALIST E: What storm Mr. President?

PRESIDENT TRUMP (over-talking): We have the world’s great military people in this room - I will tell you that. And, ah, we're gonna 've a great evening. Thank you all for coming. Thank you.

JOURNALIST F: What storm Mr. President?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: You'll find out

• During first three seconds of video
• Sweeping Upward Finger (notated by )
• Suppressed Smile

This image is of lower resolution due to movement of both the camera and President Trump - and in addition, the photo is magnified.

He calls attention to not only the place and event - but within the context of military personnel being present. The use of his index finger is hyper alpha - and its upward vectoring is - from his point of view - optimistic and favorable.

His suppressed, partial smile (many people would call a "smirk") and is indicative clandestine/non-disclosed information.

• Head Tilt
• Palm Up
• Head Tilt
• Unilateral suppressed smile
• Elevated Eyebrows
• Vocal Tone

All these signals occur during 0:04 second, as he says, "I don't kn- ..."

This nonverbal cluster indicates a direct yet deliberately sarcastic contradiction to his verbal and self-truncated statement of, "I don't kn - ..."

• Unilateral Suppressed Smile (smirk)
• Head beginning to tilt back
• As he says, "... before ..." (the first time he says "before", during 0:05)

A suppressed smile almost always indicates meaningful information which is not fully shared.

• Contempt
• Disgust
• Head Tilting further back during 0:06 just after he says, "... "I don't kn - Maybe it’s the calm before
the storm."..." (the first time, notated by Ω)

His head tilt in this body language cluster is, in part, a distancing phenomenon. Clustered with his contempt and disgust is a nonverbal way of saying, "I know something that you don't know - and you are beneath me".

• Tongue Click
• Unilateral Suppressed Smile
• Elevated Eyebrows

During 0:06 second (notated by µ) less than a half a second after the immediately preceding image, just after he says, "I don't kn - Maybe it’s the calm before the storm."

This unilateral suppressed (false) smile together with a Tongue Click - is patronizing and bodes ill for the receiving person/group who is the recipient of "the storm".  The Tongue Click a hyper-alpha nonverbal-paralanguage signal.

• False Smile (Disgust Smile)
• Dynamic Head Tilt - emphasizing his Disgust.

During 0:13 (notated by )

• Elevated Central Forehead Contraction
• Suppressed Mouth Smile
• Bouncing up and down on feet

- during 0:27 as he says, "You'll find out". This particular suppressed smile is subtle - watch the video several times as the still image does not capture the dynamic nature of this nonverbal tell. An elevated Central Forehead Contraction together with a Partial Mouth Smile (even a subtle one) in this context indicates Arrogance or Contempt (although both of these emotions may be manifested by other facial expressions).

His bouncing up and down on his feet/toes indicates an adrenaline surge indicated by excitement.

Summary: Most people are interpreting The President's "Calm Before the Storm" statement - as an ill omen for either Rex Tillerson or Kim Jong-un/North Korea.

President Trump's disgust and contempt may be directed at the recipient of "the storm" - or the members of the press (or both groups). The context, personnel present, and the President's reference suggests "the storm" is a military metaphor.

Donald Trump is excited about the ramifications of his secret. It's a particularly hyper-alpha moment for him. A partial/suppressed smile is nearly always indicative of withheld information - and this phenomenon is classically exemplified in this short video.

Body Language Analysis No. 4063: The Murder of Laci and Connor Peterson - Scott Peterson (Part 1 of 3) Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It's been almost 15 years since the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Connor. On 14 September 2017, ABC aired a program reviewing her murder and the ensuing investigation - a segment of which is included in the video above.

Scott Peterson (Laci's husband, Conner's father, and the killer) displayed a myriad of very telling nonverbal signals. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

SCOTT PETERSON (beginning at 5:58): There is a lot of questions on why I have not been in the media. Media will put, I believe, emotional stuff out there for a couple days - and then the story would get dropped for something else. It was our thoughts, that if - 'f I was to hold back from the media, the media would continue to come because, frankly, cameras, reporters want something they Ω they can't get right away. So this was our way of keeping the media coming back for us.

and

DIANNE SAWYER (beginning at 6:37): So many people said, 'Christmas Eve, you have a very pregnant wife * and you decide to go fishing?'

SCOTT PETERSON (beginning at 6:43): My day was open to - um - y'know - play golf or go fishing. I chose fishing that day, which was - you know, ahum, choice I made, and I, obviously regret now. You know if I could - § and this would not have happened.

During 6:23, just after Scott Peterson says, "... because, frankly, cameras, reporters they want something they - but immediately before says, they can't get right away ...", Scott Peterson displays a partial (suppressed) mouth smile (notated with Ω).

During 6:42, just after Diane Sawyer says, "So many people said, 'Christmas Eve, you have a very pregnant wife" and just before she completes her sentence with, 'and you decide to go fishing?' " - Scott Peterson displays a quite subtle, but very telling microexpression (notated by *). Again this is a mouth smile out of context. Watch this portion at regular-speed and at half-speed several times as the still images don't capture the dynamic motion of this nonverbal signal.

During 7:01 - 7:02, just after he says, "You know if I could - just decided to stay home" and just before he says, "and this would not have happened" - Scott Peterson again displays a partial mouth smile (notated with §).

Smiling out of context (and importantly these are suppressed smiles) should always throw up red flags. Of course, the cause may very well be something innocuous - such a gaffe in church or with an impending practical joke - but it is always a signal there is some emotion being withheld. Nowhere is this nonverbal axiom truer than during a discussion regarding the disappearance and/or murder of one's spouse.

Suppressed smiling and/or subtle smiling out of context are forms of "Duping Delight". This phenomenon occurs when a person takes sincere pleasure in the belief that they are successfully deceiving someone. Of course, you may very well not agree with their actions, motives, or feelings - but of course, it's their emotions and perceptions controlling their nonverbal behavior.

Learning to spot subtle smiles, suppressed smiles, microexpression smiles, and smiling out of context will save you time, money, hassle - and maybe even your life. While these behaviors are certainly not always nefarious, sincere emotions are being experienced - and yet they're being squelched. And there are times you should always endeavor to learn the reason.

Body Language Analysis No. 4041: Former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak regarding Secrets from Donald Trump - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

What nonverbal tendencies do Sergey Kislyak, Sergey Lavrov (the Russian Foreign Minister), and their boss - Vladimir Putin, all have in common?

In the above video (published Wednesday), Sergey Kislyak is fielding questions from a journalist. Mr. Kislyak was the Russian Ambassador to the United States from 26 July 2008 until this past Monday.

When emotional tension is present, particularly when with a superior-subordinate relationship - if one person adopts a "smile" - there is a very high likelihood of deception and/or manipulation is taking place.

Such "out-of-context" behaviors (smiles or otherwise) should always raise red flags.

In these adversarial situations, even when they're of relatively low consequence, a "smile" almost never is displayed because the person welcomes any confrontation. The person is also not "smiling" because they like the antagonist. Indeed, the "smile" is often not even sincere (although sometimes people will experience true joy-happiness in deception and other malicious acts). In such circumstances, these pseudo-smiles virtually always occur for one of two reasons:

  • There is an element of contempt present - and it's being masked by a "smile". It's as if to say, "I will entertain your musings, little child". It's condescending. It's a patronizing act - and it's designed to throw off your emotions. It's an intimidation tactic. Incredibly, some people use this method of manipulation as one of their primary staples of human interaction.
or
  • If they maintain a partially suppressed "smile" throughout much of the interaction (particularly if performed from the beginning), they don't have to worry about "cracking a smile" in the act of deception or when being questioned about deceit. If instead, they attempted to keep a neutral/concerned expression - then broke into a smile at the wrong time - they would "out themselves" in an act of duping delight. In this second scenario, on the surface, they're essentially feigning the first tactic (No. 1 above), yet they are only pretending this as emotional camouflage. They disguise their tendency to smile at the wrong time by instead smirk-smiling constantly (because they know they're guilty).

For most people, on the surface these two tactics look very similar (perhaps identical) - and even though both are nefarious, they each have a different motive. The first is truly patronizing-intimidating-contemptuous, while the second tactic is faking (essentially character-acting) these emotions as a cloak for the real purpose - hiding deception.

As mentioned earlier, these "smiles" are often false smiles, ruses - for these often masks for coexisting component of contempt. These feigned smiles often will "feel" like a smirk. Their appearances are asymmetrical. Mr. Kislyak's smirk-smile-contempt is biased toward his right side.

The three Russian leaders mentioned - President Putin, Minister Lavrov, and Former Ambassador Kislyak - all use the two techniques discussed here. Moreover, Sergey Kislyak uses it throughout a good portion of his interaction with this journalist. Of course, these nonverbal behaviors are not at all limited to Russians, or government officials - but are part of each human psyche.

In the image immediately above, after being asked, "But when you met Donald Trump, the President, were you surprised when he disclosed secret information to you about Syria?", Mr. Kislyak first looked away (down to his left) and then responded, "I'm not sure that I heard anything that would be secret". This expression in this photo (although not captured in this photo from an optimum angle) demonstrates Mr. Kislyak's asymmetrical smile-smirk of contempt.

Body Language Analysis No. 4001: Jodie Whittaker, Dr. Who, and Flirting from a TARDIS - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

For those of you in distant and parallel Universes, who haven't yet heard, Jodie Whittaker will be the next Time Lord. Dr. Who, a British science fiction television series, running since 1963, has had twelve male actors playing the lead protagonist. Ms. Whittaker will be the first woman in that role.

From a nonverbal perspective, what makes this image of Jodie Whittaker flirtatious?

The Time Lord's left eye is partially covered. When an eye is partially or fully covered, depending on the other nonverbal signals present, several distinct emotional messages are projected:

  • One is an Air of Mystery. This partial revealing of an eye makes us curious. We wonder. It makes us want to know what Jodie is thinking.
  • Having one eye partially or fully covered is also a metaphor for A State of Partial Undress. And just as if her hair were clothing - it leaves us wanting
  • Covering an eye also is A Form of Play - a peekaboo analog from our childhood. It sends forth feelings of, "Come play with me".

What else is Jodie's face revealing? Notice her mouth - there are two specific nonverbal elements present which, through nonverbal alchemy, combine to form a third:

    • Ms. Whitttaker is displaying a Partially Suppressed Mouth Smile. It's not a sincere smile - for her eyes are not "smiling". Yet a partially suppressed mouth smile primes the emotional brains' of anyone seeing it, such that their feelings of joy-happiness-humor-fun are partially but immediately elevated. As human beings, we want to mirror these emotions - and thus a partially suppressed smile is a very effective and very rapid method of triggering rapport.
    • Dr. Who's is also displaying a Forward Lip Purse - which signals a Clandestine Disagreement and/or a Clandestine Plan. This adds to her mystery. It amplifies our curiosity - which simultaneously magnifies sexual attraction
    • A partially suppressed mouth smile together with a forward lip purse combines to project an emotion of mischievousness - which further adds to attraction
