Body Language Analysis No. 3399 (REPOSTING): Donald Trump, a Bald Eagle, and Fear - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Multiple requests for a re-posting of this article (from 2015) have been made in the last 24 hours. It's included here in its entirety (with updated cross-reference links at the end of the article).

The latest Donald Trump video is obviously not to his liking - and understandably so. Although far from Daniel Day-Lewis, the businessman-turned-politician normally has a somewhat better control of his facial expressions compared with most candidates. This video, however, shows us a very candid exception.

In August 2015, when the Republican was posing with a bald eagle (named "Uncle Sam") for a Time magazine cover, Trump demonstrated several key, but non-flattering nonverbal faux pas.

In this split second, we can see Trump invading the personal (intimate) space of Uncle Sam. Yet the raptor, it seems, is much quicker than the republican.

Animals, of course, are no different than people when it comes to proxemic principles - if they don't know you well AND if you don't share a good rapport - they will NOT welcome you into their intimate space.

This morning during a phone interview on "Fox & Friends", Steve Doocy asked Mr. Trump, "Were you a little frightened by that bird?". Trump replied, "No, not really."

Note the expression on Mr. Trump - particularly his mouth. His sudden, tightening and lateral vectoring (with down-turned corners) of his mouth is a classic "mouth of fear".

A split second later we see Trump's "fear mouth" become even more extreme.

Body Language take-home points:

1. Only enter the personal/intimate space of another if:
    A. They know you, AND
    B.  You have good mutual-rapport

2. Although there are certainly human, cultural variations with regards to personal space (proxemics)
tolerances, it is a deeply ingrained and highly physiologic phenomenon which is exhibited
    cross-species.

3. Donald Trump Lied. He was indeed quite frightened by Uncle Sam the Bald Eagle.

Body Language Analysis No. 4219: Ivanka Trump's Reaction to Question regarding Donald Trump's Sexual Assault Accusers - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ivanka Trump, daughter and advisor to President Donald Trump, was interviewed today in South Korea. What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of a crucial portion of that exchange (video above).

PETER ALEXANDER (beginning at 1:45): Do you believe your father's accusers?

IVANKA TRUMP: [deep inhalation, Ω ] I think it's a pretty inappropriate question to ask a daughter - [deep inhalation] - if she believes [deep inhalation] Ahummm --- the accusers of her father when he's affirmatively stated that there's no truth to it. [deep inhalation] I don't think that's a question you would ask - many other - daughters. I believe my father. I know my father - so, I-, I think I have that right as a daughter [inhalation] Ummm, to- [inhalation], ah - believe my father.

Just after Peter Alexander asks, "Do you believe your father's accusers?", during 1:48, as she deeply inhales (notated by the Ω  symbol), Ivanka looks down and to her right - while contracting and elevating her central forehead muscles (This forehead dynamic is somewhat difficult to visualize due to her heavy Botox usage). Simultaneously, her inner (medial) eyebrows also contract upward.

Looking down and to the right upon being asked a question with an accusatory nature is strongly indicative of guilt, shame, and sadness.

An elevated central forehead contraction (elevated CFC) in this same question-cluster-context indicates emotional pain.

During 2:04, as she says, "... I don't think ...", Ms. Trump displays the same elevated central forehead contraction (again, blunted by Botox).

This behavior is repeated once more, during 2:12, as she says, "... I think I have ..."

During 1:59 - 2:08, as she says, "... when he's affirmatively stated that there's no truth to it. [deep inhalation] I don't think that's a question you would ask - many other - daughters ...", Ms. Trump uses a  Pseudo-Prayer with a Hand-Chop followed by a Pseudo-Prayer in isolation. This display is somewhat obscured by the banner/chyron at the bottom of the screen.

Outside of the exceptions of some religious contexts and a few (primarily Asian) cultures, a pseudo-prayer projects a patronizing and condescending emotional tone. This is the meaning in most of the World's cultures. These feelings are amplified by the accompanying chopping motion.

As she says, "I believe my father. I know my father" and - so, I-, I think I have that right as a daughter [inhalation] Ummm, to- [inhalation], ah - believe my father", Ivanka Trump shrugs her left shoulder three times in succession - a movement is which is not mirrored by her right shoulder (Again, this movement is also partially obscured by the banner/chyron at the bottom of the screen).

These unilateral shoulder shrugs performed simultaneously with positive affirmations, (e.g. "I believe my father", "I think I have that right...", and "believe my father") are profoundly contradictory to her words.

In this context, a unilateral shoulder shrug is an example of what in nonverbal parlance is known as a Partial Emblematic Slip.

From a statement analysis/paralanguage point-of-view, Ms. Trump's, use of the word choice, "I think I have that right as a daughter [inhalation] Ummm, to- [inhalation], ah - believe my father" is an odd and telling one - implying that truth is a right to believe rather than an objective reality to be sought.

What's incredibly telling behavior is that Ivanka Trump never says, "no", "no, I don't believe these accusers", "no, absolutely not", etc. - rather she speaks about an "inappropriate question" and her "right to believe".

Her strongest endorsement of the President was when she says, "I believe my father" - however, this is a free-floating, nonspecific statement - not a definitive "no" - and again, she does this while committing the contradictory unilateral shoulder shrug.

The word "inappropriate" is a highly subjective word which is used under the guise of objectivity. Its meaning is anything but objective. It's a red-flag word.

Summary: Ivanka Trump's verbal, nonverbal and paralanguage behavior indicates she believes at least some of the women who have accused her father, President Donald Trump, of sexual assault.

Body Language Analysis No. 4218: Dana Loesch, Threat Assessment, and Red Flags - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Dana Loesch, the NRA's national spokesperson narrates the above video - a 2017 ad for the National Rifle Association.

From a nonverbal and paralanguage perspective, the three predominant emotions Ms. Loesch expresses throughout this video are contempt, disgust, and anger.

Now, of course, any normal, emotionally healthy human being is going to express all of these emotions from time-to-time. We're allowed. We're human. But hopefully, we won't see these feelings very often.

However, whenever a person displays anger, contempt, and/or disgust frequently - it's a monumental alarm. Ms. Loesch displayed all of these emotions with during her recent interviews on ABC, CNN, and the Town Hall meeting in Florida where she shared the stage with surviving students from the recent Mass Shooting event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

Virtually 100% of individuals who exhibit this behavior pattern will have Impulse Control Disorder and carry a high retaliatory potential.

With increasing frequency over the past decade whenever we hire, date, or evaluate another person for any reason, we have easy access to their publicly available video, audio, images, etc. on social media. Thus we can use social media to screen/pre-screen a potential future employer, employee, date, roommate, babysitter, etc., A profound red flag is raised when anyone displays frequent contempt, anger, and/or disgust - on their social media - in our presence - and certainly during interviews on national TV.

Summary: As a method of routine screening, assessing the mental stability of a particular individual, and as a tool of Threat Assessment - whenever the real-time/day-to-day behavior or the social media of a person contains displays of anger, contempt, and/or disgust with high or even moderate frequency - a critical red flag is raised. At the very least such a person has Impulse Control Disorder and an elevated retaliatory potential.

Body Language Analysis No. 4217: Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther, Anxiety, and Alpha Up-Regulation - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chadwick Boseman was recently a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live promoting his new film, Black Panther - in which he plays the lead role (T'Challa / Black Panther). But even superheroes get nervous.

Just prior to entering the stage, as the door is rising (beginning at 0:44), Mr. Boseman flexes and extends his fingers and thumb on his right-hand several times.

This nonverbal action is an indication of anxiety. But to thin-slice this behavior further - it's also a signal that, although he's nervous, Boseman's simultaneously is dialing up his alpha qualities. Both his conscious and subconscious recognizes his context - and metaphorically, Chadwick Boseman is stepping up to the proverbial plate.

This body language example is only one of many alpha up-regulatory nonverbal behaviors.

Fascinatingly, this action of flexion and extension of the digits will also engender a decrease in heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure - as well as relaxing the facial muscles - thus leading to an increased mental focus and a psyching up.

Body Language Analysis No. 4216: NRA's Dana Loesch's Reaction to Sheriff Scott Israel at Stoneman Douglas HS Town Hall - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Along with Emma Gonzalez, Cameron Kasky, and other students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School - Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel as well as the NRA's Dana Loesch - all took part in CNN's Town Hall meeting on Wednesday 21 February 2018, just one week after a mass shooting took the lives of seventeen of their fellow students and faculty. What follows is an analysis of a crucial nonverbal reaction of Ms. Loesch's toward Sheriff Israel.

Beginning at 10:49, Sheriff Israel continues, "But - lastly, we do need to have some gun control reform. Eighteen-year-olds should never have a rifle. An eighteen-year-old kid should not have a rifle. Eighteen-year-old kid, they're, they're not adults yet - they're goin', they're in high school. These kids should not have a rifle. Bump stocks should be illegal - they should be outlawed forever. Automatic rifles should be outlawed forever - and anybody who says different - I don't know about other people, but Amber and I - we're calling BS on that." Ω  ∑

Just as Sheriff Israel finishes his statement (during 11:17) Dana Loesch projects an overt disgust expression ( Ω symbol notation in the above dialog). Notice, in particular, her mid-face tightening (e.g, just above her upper lip) together with flaring of her nostril(s).

About a second later (11:18), Ms. Loesch continues her disgust display along with an added, secondary element of contempt (a slight, left-sided predominant [her left] "snarl" configuration, as notated by the symbol). Her partial upper eyelid closure - although not a required component of either disgust or contempt - acts as an amplifier for both emotional displays.

Summary: The NRA's Dana Loesch feels both disgust and contempt for Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel and his stance on gun control. Each of these emotions engenders a high amount of retaliatory potential.

Body Language Analysis No. 4215: NRA's Dana Loesch at CPAC: "Many in Legacy Media Love Mass Shootings" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday at the CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in National Harbor, Maryland - the NRA spokesperson, Dana Loesch said very openly and deliberately, "Many in legacy media - love - mass - shootings."

Her nonverbal and paralanguage behavior, as she spoke these words, was quite significant.

As Ms. Loesch bends forward at her waist, she temporarily decreases her height about eight inches. She then rotates her body in a semi-circle, facing different portions of her audience - while taking on a staccato rhythm with her vocal expression: "love - mass - shootings."

She is standing behind a lectern (as well as the chyron/TV banner which is blocking a portion of our view), but if we could see her hands - with high probability they'd be configured in a pseudo-prayer and may also be moving in a hand-chop dynamic, three times with each of the last three words of her sentence.

The cluster/combination of this nonverbal-verbal-paralanguage behavior:

• Leaning forward
• Pseudo-prayer (with or without a hand-chop motion)
• Staccato speech
• Loud voice

Indicates the thought-emotions of:

• Melodrama
• Patronizing Emotional Tone
• Manipulation
• Deception

Whenever you see this behavior, alarm bells should go off - for the person who's displaying it - is trying much too hard to convince you of an idea, opinion, course of action, etc.

Why are they being so over-compensatory? Because, with high probability, they are lying.

Intriguingly, those individuals who display these signals are also often trying to convince themselves too - therefore it's frequently a signal of co-rationalization. They're trying to manipulate/convince/lie to you - while doing the same thing to (at least a portion of) their own psyche.

Moreover, people who use this nonverbal-verbal-paralanguage cluster are being condescending. They believe you (and/or your group) to be easily manipulated.

Summary: Dana Loesch's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior displayed at the CPAC on Thursday - indicates she is lying when she says, "Many in legacy media - love - mass - shootings." She is being melodramatic and patronizing in an attempt to manipulate her NRA audience, who she believes are easily fooled.

Body Language Analysis No. 4214: Donald Trump's Listening Session on Preventing School Shootings - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

President Trump held a "Listening Session" on Wednesday. This event was, of course, held in the aftermath of the Shooting on 14 February 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed there (fourteen of them students) and fourteen more were (thus far) non-fatally injured.

From a body language and emotional intelligence perspective, the image above captures the President in a nonverbal display in which he should have NEVER been configured - particularly at an event where such suffering was recent and so profound.

Crossing one's arms - with the hands hidden - projects the beta emotions of defensiveness (defensiveness-related anxiety), emotional discomfort, and low confidence. No leader should ever project these emotions - especially in this context. Over the past several months, the President has exhibited this particular behavior with significant and increasing frequency.

Further observation shows that President Trump crossed his arms in this manner a total of four times during the listening session. Three out of four of those occurrences were initiated when an African-American person was speaking (and 81.6% of the total elapsed time).

One of these arm-crossing events (beginning at 18:54 in the above video) was initiated immediately after an audience member began to discuss the subject of bullying - and its relationship to causing retaliatory violence. Another occasion (the only time during this listening session when the President began crossing his arms when a non-African-American began speaking) happened when the idea was being put forth by one of the victim's brothers which included a suggestion for the free-flow of ideas with no censorship (26:32 - 27:16).

Summary: President Trump's hand-hidden arm-crossing display during the School Shooting "Listening Session" on Wednesday indicates significant defensiveness, emotional discomfort, and low confidence. A dramatically disproportionate percentage (81.6%) of this negative behavior was biased against African-American audience members.

Body Language Analysis No. 4212: Sarah Huckabee Sanders Responds to Questions about President Trump's Tweet Regarding the FBI and the Florida School Shooting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders held a press briefing. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial few seconds of this event when a journalist asked Ms. Sanders' to explain one of President Trump's recent tweets (included immediately below).

JOURNALIST (beginning at 5:00): ... First a clarification from some of the President's Tweets over the weekend. The President doesn't really think - that the FBI failed to stop the Parkland Shooter because it was - too involved with the Russia Investigation, does he?

SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS: I, I, I think he was speaking, ahhhh, n-not necessarily that that is the, the, the cause - I think we all aaum have to be aware that the cause of - t-this is - that of a deranged individual, ah, that made a decision to take the lives of seventeen other people. Ahum, that is the responsibility of the shooter, ahum, certainly not the responsilibility [sic] of anybody else.

During 5:20, as Ms. Sanders says, "aaum" - she displays a simply classic Inward Lip Roll. Because of its brevity, this is also a borderline Microexpression.

An inward lip roll is a manifestation of our psyche trying to suppress the outward display - as well as the inward growth of an unwanted emotion.

The emotion/behavior Sarah Huckabee Sanders is trying to suppress is joy/laughter.

During the next approximately 1.2 seconds - as Ms. Sanders continues her sentence with "... have to be aware ...", we see her in various stages and configurations of a partially suppressed smile.

These are profound examples of what, in nonverbal parlance, is known as Duping Delight (Ekman).

Duping delight is one form of smiling out of context. The reason Ms. Sanders is partially smiling/partially suppressing her smile - is that the subconscious mind takes pleasure in fooling people (or believing that they're being fooled [duped]). Children exhibit this behavior frequently.

When comparing President Trump's tweet - with Ms. Sanders' attempt at explaining it - one can see that they're highly incongruous. Her answer cannot be reconciled - it's clear and demonstrable deception.

Ms. Sanders' paralanguage behavior is also noteworthy. She committed many stuttering displays. Her mispronunciation of "responsibility" as "responsilibility" [sic] - further betrays her anxiety. Ms. Sanders' word choice of "responsibility" in this context is also odd. Moreover, from a strict logic point of view, Ms. Sanders' simply did not answer the question.

Summary: Sarah Huckabee Sanders' lied in her answer to the journalist regarding President Trump's tweet. A word transcript alone verifies her duplicity. Her nonverbal and paralanguage displays are classic and indicative of deception. These signals are also textbook examples of duping delight and attempts at emotional suppression.

Body Language Analysis No. 4211: Donald Trump Feels The Need To Dial-up His Alpha - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The image above (and close-up below) shows Donald Trump on the White House grounds last Friday as he was walking to Marine One. He departed shortly on three day trip to Florida.

From a nonverbal perspective, when a person arranges their shirt cuffs - they almost never really need straightening. Such false adjustments of one's shirt cuff indicate a person who is in the midst of attempting to up-regulate their alpha emotional tone.

This is a particular body language signal is seen in individuals who already possess an over-all alpha personality - however recent events have knocked them down a notch or two (becoming temporarily more beta). The false cuff adjustment (which the President displays frequently) is a signal the psyche is attempting to step it back up again. But it's an indication they're feeling off their game. At the moment, they're in a state lowered confidence.

This specific alpha up-regulatory behavior is more commonly seen in men. Can you think of any others? What are some alpha amplifiers more frequently displayed by women?

Body Language Analysis No. 4210: Rod Rosenstein's Hesitancy to Disclose - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is the second article on this site regarding Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's recent statement/press conference and his announcement of the indictment of thirteen Russian individuals and three Russian organizations for alleged interference in the 2016 US Presidential election. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the Q & A portion of this brief presser.

ROD ROSENSTEIN (beginning at 6:35): I want to thank the federal agents and prosecutors who are working on this case for their exceptional service and I’ll be happy to take a few questions Ω Jack.

JOURNALIST (JACK): Is there concern that this - the indictment undermines the outcome of the election?

ROD ROSENSTEIN: What I have identified for you are the allegations in the indictment. There's no allegations in the indictment of any effect on the outcome of the election. Jessica .

JOURNALIST (JESSICA): On page four of the indictment, paragraph six, it specifically talks about the Trump campaign, saying that defendants communicated with unwitting (7:09, subtle loose tongue jut) individuals associated with the Trump campaign (hard swallow). My question is later in the indictment, campaign officials are referenced not by their name, by, by campaign official one or two  (button your lip/Sssh, 7:18) or three. Were campaign officials cooperative, or were they duped? What was their relationship with this?

ROD ROSENSTEIN: Then there’s no allegation in this indictment that any American had any knowledge - and the nature of the scheme was the kept defendants took extraordinary steps to make it appear they were ordinary American political activists - even going so far as to - base their activities on - a virtual private network here in the United States, so if anybody traced it back (7:44 - 7:45) to the first jump, they appeared to be American. Catherine.

JOURNALIST (CATHERINE): Have you had any assurances from the Russians they will provide these individuals for prosecution? (7:53 - 7:54, side to side anxiety/swagger)

ROD ROSENSTEIN: There've been no, ah, communication with the Russians about this. We’ll follow the ordinary process ah, of seeking cooperation and extradition. Thank you very much.

During 6:44, a split-second prior to calling on the journalist named Jack, Deputy AG Rosenstein scrapes/bites his lower teeth on his upper lip (and notated by the Ω symbol). This Bite Your Lip sign reveals his Anxiety - and more specifically - his Hesitancy to Disclose.

During 7:00, just after he says "Jessica", he displays another Bite Your Lip maneuver (notated by the symbol). These indicate Deputy AG Rosenstein does not want to fully reveal what he is thinking-feeling.

During 7:09, he displays a subtle Loose Tongue Jut as the journalist, Jessica, says, "unwitting". This is an indication of the emotion of: I've been caught (Navarro). It's yet another signal that not everything is being disclosed here.

It's important to emphasize that Deputy AG Rosenstein is NOT lying - but he's afraid - and he knows Jessica is implying an important distinction here.

During 7:10, Rosenstein exhibits a Hard Swallow as Jessica says,"individuals associated with the Trump campaign". A hard swallow is a nonspecific anxiety indicator.

During 7:18 as Jessica says, "one or two", Deputy AG Rosenstein displays a particular sub-type of Mouth Cover. This brushing/rubbing of the lip (particularly with the thumb) indicates the thought-emotions of: Ssssh, Be Quiet, and Button your lip. This is a further indication of a desire not to disclose further details.

During 7:22 - 7:23 as Jessica says, "cooperative", he displays another good example of a Hard Swallow - a further indication of significant Anxiety.

During 7:44 - 7:46 as he says, "United States" - Rosenstein is Bouncing up on Toes in excitation. He is proud that this tactic of the Russian election interference has been uncovered.

During 7:53 - 7:54, as the journalist, Catherine, says "individuals for prosecution" - the Deputy AG displays a Swaying Side-to-Side dynamic. In this context, this nonverbal signal projects the thought-emotions of: Swagger, I'm ready, and Bring 'em on.

Summary: Although Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein was honest during this press conference - he also displayed a strong hesitancy to disclose further information: That although these particular indictments are directed only toward the named Russian individuals/organizations - they do not exempt anyone else - nor preclude any future, related indictments - including more members of the Trump campaign. Moreover, Rosenstein has knowledge such indictments are forthcoming.
