Body Language Analysis No. 4134: Hope Hicks, Emotional Intelligence, and Communicating Nonverbally (PHOTOS)

Hope Hicks was named interim White House Communications Director when Anthony Scaramucci was fired on 16 August 2017. She was appointed to the position permanently on 12 September.

This image was captured in the White House briefing room.

Notice the components of Director Hicks' facial expression. Her inner (medial) eyebrows are vectored downward. There's also a tightening of both of her lower eyelids.

Ms. Hicks' torso is not rotated, and while her head is partially turned - her eyes have to gaze far laterally in order for her to fixate on the person who's speaking. We don't look directly at people whom we don't like, don't respect, and/or don't believe.

The Communication Director's mid-face is contracted - more specifically, she's flaring her nostrils and displaying tension in the region above her upper lip and below her nose.

Both of Hicks' lips are dynamically thinned - this is subtle and evident more so with her upper lip.

Her mouth opening is foreshortened with the lip margins oriented horizontally.

The contraction of her mentalis muscles (on the front of the mandible) give rise to her chin dimpling - a signal that she's also clenching her jaw. If you look carefully, you'll also notice the concomitant and subtle "sucking-inward" of her each of cheeks.

In brief Ms. Hicks' nonverbal cluster displays:

• Lower Eyelid Tension
• "Side Eye"
• Nostril Flaring
• Tension in region above Upper Lip/Below Nose
• Lip Thinning (Upper > Lower)

• Chin Dimpling

Summary: Although she isn't speaking a word, in this moment, Director Hicks is feeling - and very much communicating - Anger.

Body Language Analysis No. 4089: Donald Trump's Reaction to Bob Corker's World War III Comment - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Earlier today, during an appearance with Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office, Donald Trump was asked about Senator Bob Corker's statement regarding the President moving us “on the path to World War III.”

The President responded, "We were on the wrong path before — all you have to do is take a look — if you look over the last 25 years — with numerous administrations, we were on a path to — a very big problem. A problem like this World has never seen. We’re on the path right now, believe me."

But just before he answered, during 0:04 to 0:05, he shook his head laterally (e.g., "No") as he made the expression captured in the image below.

Notice the President's lips. They are stretched horizontally - almost in a straight line - nearly disappearing in their extreme thinning. This is not an inward lip roll, although a nonverbal novice may confuse the two signals.

His "mustache area" is very tightened while simultaneously his nostrils are flaring.

The President's jaw is clenched (betrayed by his chin dimpling) and jutting forward (a "Jaw Jut").

It's surprising at the high percentage of people misinterpret this expression when it's directed at them in the everyday world. This nonverbal cluster is highly indicative of anger with a secondary component of frustration.

Summary: Senator Bob Corker's recent statements regarding President Trump, where he said the President is like "a reality show" and leading us on the "path to World War III" (not surprisingly) elicits a high level of anger in Donald Trump.

Body Language Analysis No. 4023: Mike Pence, The 2020 Presidential Race, and Anger - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In refuting a New York Times article which said he was positioning himself to run for president in 2020, Vice President Mike Pence declared his loyalty on Sunday to President Trump. The VP responded with, "Today’s article in The New York Times is disgraceful and offensive to me, my family and our entire team. The allegations in this article are categorically false and represent just the latest attempt by the media to divide this administration."

Mike Pence's office issued this statement of denial - in writing - not via an interview or similar format. Thus we have no opportunity to correlate these words with his nonverbal behavior.

The image above of Mike Pence was taken in 2015 while he was Governor of Indiana (photo credit Gage Skidmore).

Note that his Inward Lip Roll is quite pronounced. There is also considerable coexisting tension of Pence's "Mustache Area". An inward lip roll (ILR) is a subconscious attempt to avoid a further crescendo of already strong emotions. Most of the time an inward lip roll appears in conjunction with a negative emotion (such as anger, frustration, impatience, etc.) - although it's sometimes seen in the suppression of positive emotions (e.g., joy-laughter during in socially awkward situations).

Now, look at his jaw. It's vectored forward in a configuration known as a "Jaw Jut". This particular jaw jut is quite extreme. Moreover, his accompanying chin dimpling indicates his teeth are also clenched.

Summary: This nonverbal cluster is classic - indicating Mike Pence was feeling anger - and suppressing it, at the time this image was captured.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3925: An Expression of Donald Trump's Which He's Making More Often - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The expression displayed by President Donald Trump in these two images were almost never seen on Candidate Trump.

The primary emotions he's projecting in both of these photos are that of bitterness and regret. Note the corners of Trump's mouth are down-turned. This is sometimes referred to as a "Bitter-Smile" - very ironically to most people, for it resembles nothing of joy or happiness.

The President is also displaying a significant element of frustration as evidenced by the clenching of the jaw, dimpling of the front of the chin, and the bulging forward of tissue just beneath his lower lip.

In real-time, while people are displaying this expression, virtually everyone believes they are "pushing out" a slight smile (e.g., forcing a smile). However, if by some chance they could momentarily "freeze" their face - and immediately look in a mirror, they'd be very surprised to find their expressions' are quite far from what they believed them to be. This is a universally human phenomenon - for as we deviate further from our "emotional baseline", our objectivity of the true configuration our faces' and bodies' becomes quite distorted. We also become increasingly inaccurate as to the correct interpretation of what other peoples' body language is "saying" (as well as what the simultaneous verbal language and vocal qualities are conveying).

Further thin-slicing the emotions in each of these pictures reveals another distinction. In the image above, Donald Trump's eyebrows are more drawn together and vectored downward - while in the image below they are neutral or perhaps slightly elevated (more so on his left). This subtlety is significant for a higher level of frustration (and shorter temper) in the moment above - and a surrendered-resignation in the lower image.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3620: Cristiano Ronaldo's Injury, UEFA Euro 2016 and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Yesterday Portugal won the UEFA Euro 2016 by beating host country and favorite France, 1-0 after extra time. This is Portugal's first Euro tournament victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo injured his left knee and carried off the pitch in the 25th minute.

Ronaldo's nonverbal displays are very much worth nuancing.

When either emotional pain or physical pain of significance are present, particularly when the onset is very recent - each will be accompanied by a Central Forehead Contraction (CFC). Of course in this moment Cristiano Ronaldo is suffering from both sources of pain.

We can clearly see Ronaldo's Inward Lip Roll (ILR) - which is very common during attempts at emotional suppression. A Jaw Jut, which is also seen with suppression of tears is present in this moment as well - along with chin dimpling. Dramatic mid-facial tension, which is a rarely discussed nonverbal tell is yet another component of this cluster - and is very pronounced here on Ronaldo.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3192: Jimmy Kimmel Chokes-up in his Tribute to David Letterman - a Body Language Signal of Crying Suppression & Sincerity (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In each of the three moments captured in the images below, Jimmy Kimmel is suppressing tears while describing what David Letterman and his show meant to him. When attempting to squelch such emotion, one common nonverbal signal is a jaw jut clustered with a dimpling of the chin. In addition the lips will often take on an appearance as seen here - thinned and sometimes with a concave-down configuration such that a novice of body language may indeed mistake this for anger or bitter regret.

It is also very noteworthy that at each of these moments of more intense emotional display - when his face was more tense - so were Kimmel's hands - for then they were held the together in a very common example of a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier). This is another example of body language in the midst of attempting emotional suppression (ergo the descriptor "pacifier" [Navarro]). It's a very common nonverbal phenomenon - that when the mouth and mid-face develop tension - the hands will also display it.

This was a classy tribute on Jimmy's part. Said another way - and from a nonverbal perspective, Kimmel's sincerity quotient was very high. There are many times when such emotion is feigned - but this was NOT one of them (When was the last time you were fooled?).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3090: Lance Armstrong Lied - Again, Girlfriend Took the Blame - Body Language of the Mea Culpa Face (PHOTO)

Anna Hansen, the longtime girlfriend of defamed Lance Armstrong, took the blame for the ex-cycling star when on 28 December 2014 Armstrong hit two cars in Aspen, Colorado. Allegedly it was a mutual decision for Hansen and Armstrong to lie in the police in their initial report.

Hansen allegedly later told the police, "We've had our family name smeared over every paper in the world in the last couple of years, and honestly, I've got teenagers. I just wanted to protect my family because I thought 'Gosh, Anna Hansen hit some cars,' it's not going to show up in the papers, but 'Lance Armstrong hit some cars,' it's going to be a national story."

The image above shows the false seven time winner of the Tour de France - titles which have since been stripped from him - in a particular cluster of facial expressions which is extremely common when admitting fault and indeed it's called the "Mea Culpa Face".

The primary emotion being expressed in the mea culpa face is one of regret. Yet there also is significant anger present - although it is the secondary emotion. In addition, the psyche is attempting to suppress strong feelings in this moment both from growing and from being expressed. Do you see and can you separate all of these facial nonverbal components?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2912: Gerald Ford Pardoning of Richard Nixon - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, addressed the nation 40 years ago today and announced his resignation. He officially left office at noon the next day. Nixon was flying over Missouri when Gerald Ford took his oath of office.

On 8 September 1974, President Ford addressed the nation (see video below). These images show the moment when Ford signed proclamation 4311 which gave Nixon a full and unconditional pardon from crimes committed related to the Watergate Scandal or any other crime committed while in office as U.S. President.

Although this photo above is of lower resolution, you can note that Ford's jaw is clenched and the muscles covering the front of his chin are contracted and dimpled (1:24 in the video below). Moreover, his "mustache area" (between the upper lip and nose) is tightened. Simultaneous nasal flaring is also present.

Had Ford's jaw not been clenched - his lips - which are partially rolling inwards (ergo a truncated "Inward Lip Roll") would have been fully expressed. Because of his jaw clenching however, his Inward Lip Roll (ILR) could not form in its entirety. The "Peri-Lip Bulge" which can be seen below Ford's lower lip is essentially only seen in the presence of a clenched jaw.

The nonverbal cluster context displayed here - tells us that President Ford was both angry as well as trying to suppress both this outward display and the inward crescendo of his anger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2861: Ronald Reagan and Variations on Thumbs-Up Body Language (PHOTOS)

Ronald Reagan is shown here with a disparity of two different emotions expressed nonverbally. The most obvious one is the universal emblem of the "Thumbs Up" - a Worldwide expression of optimism. This is a very conscious nonverbal.

However when we look at President Reagan's face - we see an entirely different emotional signal; Mr. Reagan's Jaw is clenched (note his dimpled chin muscles), his lips are horizontally configured and very thinned-out. Note also his nostrils are flared. The primary emotion Mr. Reagan is feeling here is Anger and the secondary one is Regret. These facial nonverbal signals are all initiated subconsciously.

Whenever there is a disparity between the nonverbal signals, the ones that are subconsciously generated are truly reflective of what another person is feeling while the consciously originated ones are deceptive.

On a different occasion we see the 40th U.S. President also displaying a thumbs up illustrator. Yet on his face we see a smile with a much higher sincerity quotient.

Here all of Reagan's nonverbal signals are congruent - and thus we know he believes the signal his thumb is sending.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2662: Mike Shanahan Fired - A Man of Many Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Mike Shanahan, the head coach of the Washington Redskins was fired today. In four years at the helm, Shanahan collected a record of 24-40 with just three wins this season.

Today is known in the National Football league as "Black Monday". As the first day after the end of the NFL's regular season it brings casualties every season and this year was no different. Four other coaches lost their jobs as well - the Minnesota Vikings fired coach Leslie Frazier, the Cleveland Browns let go of Rob Chudzinski, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waved goodbye to Greg Schiano and the Detroit Lions canned Jim Schwartz.

In the image above Mike Shanahan can be seen exhibiting several key body language components significant of anger. Note that his lips are thinned-out nearly to the point of disappearing. Shanahan's "Mustache Area" is also significantly tightened. These "Thinned Lips of Anger" are highly specific for anger and are often confused with an "Inward Lip Roll" (aka ILR).

Shanahan's clenched jaw (also highly consistent with anger) is betrayed by the concave-down furrow beneath his lower lip in addition to dimpling of the skin on the front of the coach's chin.

Eye are often partially closed with lower levels of anger (think Clint Eastwood in a Western) - however when the anger is moderate or higher, the eyelids will open wider. Shanahan is quite angry in this photo. What other emotions also have eyes opened "White and Wide"?

Although many beginners will only think of dilated nostrils (or a single nostril) in the context of disgust or contempt, significant anger also will be accompanied by flared nostrils. What are some other emotions with this nasal configuration?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2604: Obamacare Girl "Adrianna" on GMA - Body Language Harbingers of .... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The failure of the Obamacare Website and the cancellation of millions of health insurance policies has left the woman known as "Obamacare Girl" feeling maligned and bullied. This brief interview demonstrates several common nonverbal pre-crying displays. Such signals of sadness may or may not be successful in suppressing tears. 

At 2:01 Obamacare Girl (Adrianna) briefly breathes through  tightened and narrowed lips. This particular "Tight-Lipped Breathing" is characterized by one (or multiple shallow and) rapid breath(s) and is very commonly seen in anticipation of a significant emotional event (here crying on national television and sharing her story with millions) and has an unpredictable outcome feeling for those displaying this nonverbal. This tight-lipped breathing along with increased and shallow respiration rate, also is associated with increased adrenaline, rapid pulse and a rise in blood pressure.  Some may confuse it with the "puffer fish" which occurs both before, but more commonly after a significant event; however the puffer fish (which is usually just a few or even a single expiration) brings on a lower pulse, deeper and slower breaths as well as lower blood pressure.

The puffer fish lowers anxiety while tight-lipped breathing (TLB) is associated with increased anxiety - and thus often is a harbinger of a crying-emotional release.

At 2:02 Adrianna can be seen very briefly "pulling in" her central cheeks in what is a very evanescent "False Mastication like" display.

This is a very common anxiety indicator and is also subconsciously used in an attempt to suppress crying.

We see an increase reflectivity in Adrianna's eyes in this image (2:04) which indicates more tear-film from the expressing of "crying tears".

It is very common to gaze upward prior to crying in an effort to suppress sadness and tears. 

Chin dimpling, seen here - also see at 2:04, is also a very common crying harbinger.

Subtle chin dimpling is seen displayed at 2:11 along with mild-to-moderate jaw jutting.

Although a jaw jut is seen usually in the context of anger, it may also be occur to stave off an emotional display of tears.

Adrianna also sports widely opened eyelids - which is is also common in the moments just prior to crying and near-crying.

At 2:12 we see Adrianna in a specific  facial expression termed an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). It is the psyche's attempt to suppress an escalation of emotion - both internally and in body language. The ILR is more commonly seen in the setting of anger and also on occasion to suppress joy-laughter.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2436: Vladimir Putin next to Barack Obama - G8 Body Language (Video, Photo)

Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama of course conducted discussions recently at the G8 Meeting in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Their nonverbal language speaks volumes. In the above image (from the very end of the video below) after the end of a press conference with his American counterpart, Vladimir shows several emotions at once.

His jaw is clenched tightly which is a clear display of Anger. This is evidenced by the dimpling of his chin as well as the presence of a particular variety of "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). When an inward lip roll occurs in a more isolated emotional context, the lips roll in more (because the jaw is slightly open) and it looks as if both the upper and lower lips are being bitten down on. When the jaw is clenched however, the area just below the lower lip and just above the upper lip - bulge outwards. This nonverbal variant (Peri-Lip Bulge) occurs because with the teeth together there is no place left for the tissue to go - thus it bunches up.

The ILR signifies the psyche's attempt at suppressing an outward display and an inward crescendo of significant levels emotion - and here that emotion is Anger.

The upward directed right corner of Putin's mouth as well as the "tucked-in" appearance of both right and left corner of his moth shows us that Mr. Putin has significant Regret and is also quite Frustrated.

Putin's particular combination (aka body language cluster) of facial nonverbals will evoke anxiety and mirrored frustration in most everyone who witness it. How often do you make this facial expression without realizing it nor its ramifications?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2371: Barack Obama & Anger in the Rose Garden - POTUS's Body Language & the Gun Laws

Today the U.S. Senate voted down a bill that would have acted to expand background checks prior to the purchase of a gun. Subsequently President Obama gave a speech in the Rose Garden. Above is a video clip from that speech. At the 0:23 second mark he begins, "...Ninety percent of the democrats in the Senate voted for that idea. But it's not going to happen. Because ninety percent of republicans in the Senate just voted against that idea." Just after this segment, during the 0:35 - 0:37, the President's facial expression is highly indicative of anger-frustration.

This particular body language seen at this moment has several components centered around the mouth-jaw-lips-chin and the tissue adjacent to the lips. Clenching the jaw is a nonverbal which is highly consistent with anger. The masseter muscles which close the jaw can be seen contracting here. The Presidents lips also grow very thin as the tissue is stretched in a straight horizontal line - this is also very indicative and highly reliable sign of anger. In addition Mr. Obama's lips also are rolling inwards - however unlike the conventional and completely expressed "Inward Lip roll" (ILR) - due to his tightly closed jaw, the lips cannot be fully "rolled in"; subsequently the tissue adjacent to his lips, particularly his lower lip gets "bunched up" (peri-lip bulge). Another finding here is a bit more difficult to see, but even though this video and image below are not high definition, a dynamic wrinkling-dimpling of the skin on his chin can still be visualized.

The President's eyebrows are also pulled together and down - a signal of anger which is recognized by most people if prompted. However most people are fully present enough and are not observant enough to look for this nonverbal.

Much less recognized is the slight narrowing of the distance between the President's upper and lower eyelids and a coexisting tightening of the eyelid muscles, the orbicularis oculi (pars palpebralis) - most easily seen on the lower eyelids.

This video, like most, is chocked-full of body language - but just looking at POTUS's mouth-lips-jaw-chin we see four nonverbal configurations clustered together and are strong indicators of anger-frustration.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2031: Tina Fey arriving at Alec Baldwin's Wedding, Fear-Empathy with a (partial) Sincere Smile - Emotional Dissonance

The hilarious, beautiful and talented Tina Fey arrives at her 30 Rock co-star, Alec Baldwin's wedding in the above image. Tina is wearing a great and relatively rarely photographed expression. Ms. Fey's eyes have some of the elements of a true (Duchenne) smile - with well-defined concave-up furrows in her lower eyelids indicating a (partial) contraction of the orbicularis oculi (pars orbitalis) muscles. It is a partial contraction, because the upper lids are not partially closed as well (indeed on her right, her lid is opened wider than a resting state). This probably (and at least partially) has to do with the relatively high adrenaline status we all have when we're being photographed/videoed/televised (even though she's very experienced in such scenarios). Our eyelids open wider when the emotion of fear is present. This body language phenomenon is more pronounced in the upper lids. It is also very possible that a significant portion of this fear is for Alec. She is feeling fear for him. Alec married his yoga instructor, Hilaria Thomas who is 28 while Baldwin is 54.

The fear component is further nonverbally expressed by Ms. Fey's mouth (with the right side being more pronounced) - pulling primarily laterally with her lips stretched thinner. The frontal aspect of her chin is also dynamically wrinkled/dimpled giving appearance that the lower lid is protruding. This chin dimpling along with subtle tension of her neck muscles are also consistent with mild fear. Thus, this variety of "fear" is, of course, not the same as that of threatened bodily harm or another extreme event. But it is a form of fear none the less. It's an empathy-fear mixed with a sincere smile. This is a great example of emotional dissonance - a sincere expression of two opposite and competing emotional tones.
