Body Language Analysis No. 4393: El Paso Mass Shooter - Using Body Language as a Threat Assessment Tool - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

On Saturday 3 August 2019, Patrick Wood Crusius allegedly went on a shooting rampage inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. He traveled about 1,050 km (~650 miles) from his home in Allen, Texas to do so. Tragically, 22 people have died while another 24 were wounded. About 30 minutes prior to the shooting, Crusius published manifesto online, ranting against immigration and declaring that “this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.” Moreover, Crusius confessed to law enforcement that he had been specifically targeting "Mexicans".

From a nonverbal and specifically a threat-assessment perspective, it's crucial to analyze the three images of the suspect included here.

In the first image, above, the suspect's eyebrows and forehead are lowered. His eyebrows are also mildly drawn together. The left side of his mid-face is contracted in what many would colloquially term a 'snarl'. This is primarily an expression of contempt with a secondary component of anger.

Notice too, that his eyelids are partially closed. At this time it's not clear if the suspect's upper eyelids may have had this characteristic since birth (and, in that case, would be classified as congenital ptosis), but his 'droopy' eyelids have the effect of amplifying both his anger and contempt.

An additional sign in this photo is the suspect's mild Forward Lip Pursing. A forward lip purse signals a full or partial undisclosed disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. A person configuring their lips in this fashion believes they are a relative alpha to (who they perceive to be) beta personalities with whom they're interacting. They also believe they have a good chance of successfully carrying out their plan/action.

In the next image of the suspect, we see his expression is similar to that in the first photo. His eyebrows, however, are pinched closer together and perhaps lowered more. Notice his mid-face is mildly contracted - particularly his 'mustache area'. His nostrils are also mildly flared. This is an amalgam of Disgust and Anger. Anyone who displays disgust toward a person or group of people - signals their belief of their perceived superiority/the others' perceived inferiority.

It's profoundly important to stress that such chronic displays of disgust also signal an inherent component to their beliefs of superiority - and others' inferiority. The thought-emotion of disgust is necessary for demonizing and 'otherizing' people. Thus, it's not surprising to learn that disgust was the most common facial expression documented on the faces' of Nazis staffing concentration camps during World War II.

Many people would mistake the emotions seen in this third image as a partial smile - but it's nothing of the sort. This is Contempt - and more specifically, a variety of Smug Contempt.

SUMMARY: All healthy human beings will, on occasion, experience anger, contempt, and disgust. However, those individuals who exhibit these emotions too often or too intensely have significant psychological pathology. This pattern, of course, has been true throughout human history - but with the advent of social media, we can (openly and publicly) qualify this behavior - as well as quantify it. So, while certainly, not everyone who displays disgust, anger, and/or contempt either frequently and/or extremely will perpetrate a mass-shooting, they will, at least, have Impulse Control Disorder. Knowing how to spot these and other nonverbal behaviors is an integral component of accurate threat assessment and critical for personal safety.

Body Language Analysis No. 4354: Mass Shooting at Pittsburgh Synagogue - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

Earlier today, during Shabbat services, a mass shooting occurred at Tree of Life (L’Simcha) Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Eleven people were killed and at least six others were injured, two of them critically. Before opening fire, the alleged shooter, Robert D. Bowers, yelled, "All Jews must die!"

The above image of Robert Bowers is from one of his social media sites. From a nonverbal perspective, we can glean valuable information in its analysis.

While not extreme, Bowers is clearly displaying a blend of disgust and contempt. A primary component of each these emotional displays is revealed in the area above his upper lip and below his nose. You'll note this 'mustache area' is contracted and tightened (a characteristic of both disgust and contempt). Careful examination, however, reveals it's slightly more tense on one side (here, on HIS right). In this context, this particular asymmetry is indicative of contempt (which may be also manifested with left side bias). Surprisingly, many will confuse such mild (or even moderate) snarl-like expressions with a type of smile. This is a profound and common mistake.

Flaring of the nostrils is another component of both disgust and contempt, although with contempt the flaring is also more pronounced on one side (again, in this case, Bowers' right).

You'll also note that Robert Bowers is not looking directly at the camera. His eyes are turned toward the camera - but his head is only slightly turned - and a bit also with his torso. People will look directly with much less frequency toward those they don't trust/believe, don't respect, and/or don't like.

SUMMARY: When screening people for employment or for any other purpose, social media is a valuable tool in predicting their behavior - including with threat assessment. Social media often acts as a type of reverse Rorschach test - telegraphing to the world one's most prominent thought-emotions. Certainly, individuals who chronically display contempt, disgust, and/or anger (either on social media or in real-time) will not all commit violent crimes - but, crucially, those who do show these emotions with significant frequency will virtually all have impulse control disorder.

Body Language Analysis No. 4342: Alleged Jacksonville Shooter David Katz - Threat Assessment and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

David Katz was in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday. He had traveled from his home in Baltimore to participate in a Madden video tournament. Tragically, and with motives yet unknown, a lone gunman - allegedly Katz, shot and killed two people while injuring ten others before taking his own life.

From a nonverbal perspective, the above image of Katz, captured last year after he won a tournament, is worth analyzing in greater detail.

Note that Katz's central forehead is both contracted and vectored upward. In nonverbal parlance, this is termed an Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (Elevated CFC). In addition, Katz is displaying a simultaneous slight mouth "smile". However, this "smile" is no smile at all. It's insincere. It's a ruse.

Now, this particular combination of an elevated CFC, together with a partial mouth pseudo-smile is an expression we all exhibit - every emotionally healthy person - once in a while. On these relatively infrequent occasions, one (or more) of the following three emotions is being experienced:

• Arrogance
• Contempt
• Disbelief (more specifically, a Smug-Disbelief with Impatient-Dismissal)

It's important to stress that all three of these emotions may be conveyed with other facial displays. In addition, these emotions also may overlap. We all will, of course, experience these feelings from time to time but - hopefully not too frequently. So it follows that, now and again, we also will make this facial expression.

However, individuals who frequently display this facial expression, have a very high correlation with Antisocial Personality Disorder (Abbreviated as APD and includes both Sociopathy and Psychopathy [which are somewhat common/colloquial terms]).

Two key personality traits common to both sociopaths and psychopaths are:

• Very low or nonexistent Empathy 

combined with:

• Low Sincerity Quotients (e.g., people who aren't necessarily lying IN THAT MOMENT - but they have a strong pattern of frequent deception)

SUMMARY: The particular facial expression of an Elevated Central Forehead Contraction together with a Simultaneous Partial Mouth "Smile" (often suppressed and subtle) - when frequently displayed - has an extremely high correlation with Sociopathy and Psychopathy.

Low Empathy Quotients combined with Low or Absent Sincerity (Chronic Lying) - are characteristics common to Sociopaths and Psychopathy (Antisocial Personality Disorder).

In 2011, Stormy Daniels (Stephanie Clifford) was allegedly threatened by a man in a parking lot in Las Vegas, Nevada while she had her young daughter with her.

In a recent 60 minutes interview, Ms. Daniels recounted, "And a guy walked up on me and said to me, 'Leave Trump alone. Forget the story.' And then he leaned around and looked at my daughter and said, 'That's a beautiful little girl. It'd be a shame if something happened to her mom.' And then he was gone."

The above sketch was drawn by Lois Gibson based on Stormy Daniels' description. Ms. Gibson is one of the most skilled forensic artists in the World - and indeed, she holds the Guinness World Record for the most identifications.

As noted in the margin of drawing, Stormy Daniels described these characteristics:

• Caucasian Male
• 30s to early 40s
• 5'9" - 6'0"
• Lean but fit


Noteworthy physical characteristics in the sketch:

• Lighter colored eyes (irises)
• Prominent brow/moderately deep-set eyes
• Eyes are mild-moderately wider apart than average in relation to his face
• Longish hair/combed back/no part
• Prominent Philtrum (colloquially termed 'Cupid's bow') - it's also mildly asymmetrical
• Nose is slightly displaced toward his right side (probable old trauma)
• Prominent cheekbones - this feature would be less prominent
   if he's gained a modest amount of weight
• Prominent mid-face/mouth area - this gives the false appearance
   of dynamically protruding/pursing lips when his mouth/lips are at rest
• Jaw is prominent - protrudes forward significantly
• Jaw is asymmetrical - more prominent on his left (probable reason why his left ear is drawn lower)
• Note there is no cleft in his chin
• Although it's not drawn here, there's a high probability he has a
  Prominent Adam's Apple (laryngeal prominence)


Inferred characteristics:

• High probability he still wears 2-day stubble facial hair
• High probability he still wears longish hair, combed back
• Places high emphasis on his appearance
• Frequent visits to hair care/cosmetology professionals 
• Gym Rat
• Deeper Voice than average male
• Multiple Sexual Partners - greater than average - with simultaneous clandestine relationships
• Rarely maintains contact with women whom he previously was involved
• Impulse Control Disorder/Tendency toward physical altercation
• History of physical abuse with women
• Drives a 2 door - High probability of a sports car/black
• Fast driver/History of Speeding tickets
• Low Empathy Quotient - probable history of animal abuse
• Skilled Liar


I would highly recommend that this sketch be distributed to cosmetologists and throughout cosmetology professional organizations - as these individuals are highly observant with details of facial structure/facial idiosyncrasies - and, importantly, they also see their clientèle frequently. It would be wise to permanently institute such an ID methodology between cosmetology organizations and local police forces/FBI.

Per Michael Avenatti (Ms. Daniels attorney), there is currently a $131,000 reward for information leading to the positive identification of the man who threatened Ms. Clifford in Las Vegas.

Dana Loesch, the NRA's national spokesperson narrates the above video - a 2017 ad for the National Rifle Association.

From a nonverbal and paralanguage perspective, the three predominant emotions Ms. Loesch expresses throughout this video are contempt, disgust, and anger.

Now, of course, any normal, emotionally healthy human being is going to express all of these emotions from time-to-time. We're allowed. We're human. But hopefully, we won't see these feelings very often. 

However, whenever a person displays anger, contempt, and/or disgust frequently - it's a monumental alarm. Ms. Loesch displayed all of these emotions with during her recent interviews on ABC, CNN, and the Town Hall meeting in Florida where she shared the stage with surviving students from the recent Mass Shooting event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. 

Virtually 100% of individuals who exhibit this behavior pattern will have Impulse Control Disorder and carry a high retaliatory potential.

With increasing frequency over the past decade whenever we hire, date, or evaluate another person for any reason, we have easy access to their publicly available video, audio, images, etc. on social media. Thus we can use social media to screen/pre-screen a potential future employer, employee, date, roommate, babysitter, etc., A profound red flag is raised when anyone displays frequent contempt, anger, and/or disgust - on their social media - in our presence - and certainly during interviews on national TV.


Summary: As a method of routine screening, assessing the mental stability of a particular individual, and as a tool of Threat Assessment - whenever the real-time/day-to-day behavior or the social media of a person contains displays of anger, contempt, and/or disgust with high or even moderate frequency - a critical red flag is raised. At the very least such a person has Impulse Control Disorder and an elevated retaliatory potential.

Body Language Analysis No. 4129: Charles Manson's Eyes - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Charles Manson died in prison on Sunday. The cult leader was serving a life sentence for the murder of nine people in 1969. He was eighty-three years old.

Manson's appearance has come to symbolize, in many peoples' minds, the face of a crazed killer. A psychopath. The detail which most people remember are Charles Manson's eyes. They are opened very widely. But more specifically, what is it exactly about this expression that gives people "the chills"?

In this (anti)iconic photo of Manson - note how widely his upper eyelids are opened - his right eye more so than his left. His eyebrows are also elevated - which is also greater on his right side.

An astute observer may notice that Manson's nostrils are flared (again, with a bias on his right).

Now, look at the rest of his face. Although this image is of lower resolution, we can see his forehead is fairly relaxed, with minimal dynamic furrows present.

Next, try covering the upper two-thirds of his face - and look only at his mouth - it's relaxed, neutral.
The three primary emotions which involve widely-opened eyelids are:

• Intense Anger (Rage)
• Fear
• Surprise

With mild-to-moderate levels of anger, the eyelids will partially close and the mouth opening will tighten. With high levels of anger, however, this eyelid dynamic will reverse direction and the eyes will open very widely. The same wider-open configuration of intense anger/rage will also be true of the lips (and often of the mouth too - although sometimes while the lips will pull back - baring clenched teeth).

The mouth of fear is highly characteristic - with the corners of the mouth vectored backward (laterally) and down.

A mouth of surprise displays a classic vertically-oriented oval opening - with no teeth visible.

What makes Manson's face so "freaky" is that while his eyes are opened so very widely - the rest of his face (except for his nostrils) are relaxed. It's difficult to make such an expression without practicing - yet Manson did it all the time. It doesn't make sense. It confuses us. It feels odd. Normally the mouth is also "participating" with such an extreme eye expression - but not here. Thus, taken on their own, his extremely widely-opened eyes are considerably alarming - but the dramatic incongruity with the rest of his face is what really horrifies us.

Accusations of sexual harassment, assault, and rape continue to accumulate against Harvey Weinstein. Although not currently associated with these allegations, this particular incident is quite telling. The image was captured in 2011, as then 20-year-old Emma Watson was grabbed from behind by Harvey Weinstein as they exited a BAFTA event in London. That evening they were among those at a gathering honoring the film, The Kings Speech.

Purportedly Mr. Weinstein was "escorting" Ms. Watson to their waiting car and he was "protecting" her from fans/onlookers.

SUMMARY: From a nonverbal perspective, this photo captures a moment of fear on Emma Watson's face. Her eyes (eyelids) are opened much wider than baseline. This is a physiologic response to a fear-associated adrenaline surge.

Body Language Analysis No. 4049: The Arrest of University Hospital Nurse Alex Wubbels - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 26 July 2017, Salt Lake City Police Detective Jeff Payne arrested Alex Wubbels, a Nurse at the University of Utah Hospital's Burn Unit. The video featured above has gone viral. Another lengthier version of the incident, recorded from a different view is included immediately below.






The police wanted to draw a blood sample from a patient who had been in a motor vehicle accident. This patient was unconscious (thus, by definition, patient consent was not possible), the patient was not under arrest, and there was no warrant (electronic or otherwise). These requirements (as per hospital policy and the law) were calmly conveyed (via speech and in writing) by Ms. Wubbels to the police officers.

Here is a portion of their dialog:

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS: Brad, I'm just putting you on speaker so you can. So, I have the, it says, "Obtaining blood samples for police enforcement from patients suspected to be under the influence", Okay? This is something that you guys agreed to with this hospital.

The three things that allow us to do that are if you have an electronic warrant, patient consent, or patient under arrest - and neither of those things - patient can't.

The patient can’t consent, he’s (Officer Payne) told me repeatedly that he doesn’t have a warrant, and the patient is not under arrest. So I’m just trying to do what I’m supposed to do - that’s all, so.” *

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: Okay, So I take it without those in place, I’m not going to get blood? Is that - am, am I fair to surmise that?

NURSING SUPERVISOR [via speaker phone]: Alex, you're not [inaudible]

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS: Yeah, I

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: Okay [over-talking]

NURSING SUPERVISOR [via speaker phone]: Why is he continuing to blame you?

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS [over-talking]: I don't know. I have no idea why he's blaming me. I'm just referencing

NURSING SUPERVISOR [over-talking, via speaker phone]: Why are you blaming the messenger, Sir?

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: She’s the one that has told me "no".

NURSING SUPERVISOR [via speaker phone]: Yeah but Sir, you’re making a huge mistake right now, like, like, you're making a huge mistake 'cause you’re threatening a nurse [inaudible] ...

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: Okay. No, we're done. We're, we're done! You're under arrest! [inaudible] We're done!....

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS: No! No! Somebody Help me! Stop!

Screaming and yelling follows as Officer Payne grabs Alex Wubbels by the under her arms from behind and shoves her through the [automatic] doors to the outside the building where he then handcuffs her and takes her to a police vehicle.

From a body language perspective, the video is fairly limited. We have very minimal facial video of Officer Payne (in the second video). Omitting the physicality and violence associated with the arrest, and concentrating on the preceding events, there are few valuable nonverbal teaching moments, some of which are discussed here.

The image above is from 1:05 in the first video, just as Officer Payne says, "She’s the one that has told me 'no' ".

You'll note Nurse Alex Wubbels' abdomen, torso, head (and with high probability, her feet too) are not pointing at Officer Payne (his body camera is recording this video). Only her eyes are turned to meet him/his face. Human beings have a strong tendency to NOT look directly (e.g., not "whole body point") at people whom we:

• Don't like
• Don't respect
• Don't trust

If we go back a few seconds to 0:41 (also in the first video, just after she says, "I’m just trying to do what I’m supposed to do - that’s all, so" and as Officer Payne says "... Okay, so I take it ..."), we can see Nurse Wubbels just after she momentarily turned toward Officer Payne. She immediately turned her torso and head away while maintaining eye contact. Nuancing her facial expression further, we can see her:

• Upper eyelids open widely
• Lower eyelids tense
• Flared Nostrils
• Central Forehead Contracted
• Eyebrows lowered

Although not fully expressed, Nurse Wubbels is displaying a face of fear (this was also expressed, but more subtly, in the first image).

In the second video, during 5:43 - 5:45, as Officer Payne says, "Okay, So I take it without those in place, I’m not going to get blood?", he is seen grabbing his own right wrist with his left hand as he gestures with his right hand in a palm-down fashion (this image was captured during 5:44 as he says "... without ...").

Gesturing with one's palm oriented downward carries an alpha emotional tone - and the added rapid oscillation elevates it to a hyper-alpha level. It's gesture of power and authority. A person using palm down-gestures has his mind made up. He cannot be reasoned with - for he's far from his emotional baseline.

The gripping of his own wrist here portends the violence which is about to occur. Officer Payne's attempt at self-control and his growing frustration with Nurse Wubbels is momentarily displayed with his own wrist acting as a temporary surrogate for her.

Update: Although Nurse Alex Wubbels was assaulted, told she was under arrest, handcuffed, held against her will, and prevented from doing her job (all in front of her co-workers) - she was kept on hospital grounds and released that evening without arrest. Officer Jeff Payne remains on duty but has been removed from the field and has been taken off the police department's Phlebotomy unit. There are both ongoing civilian as well as an internal police investigation regarding this incident.

Body Language Analysis No. 4027: Warning Signs - Police Officer Shot Multiple Times at Close Range - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

There are numerous body language (and common sense) red flags in this video. When behavior is "Out of Context" for a given scenario, it's always a warning sign. Some of these behaviors are obvious and some are more subtle, but the ramifications are all quite serious.

1. Walking away from a police officer when commands are being given: This is, of course, always highly suspicious behavior

2. The nonchalance, casualness, and bounce of the suspect's gait/walking pattern: Highly out-of-context behavior when confronted by Law Enforcement

3. Persisting in talking on the phone (or faking a call) while being given commands by an officer: Classic decoy/camouflage/misdirection behavior 

4. Only turning his head and neck - and then only partially, with his back to the officer - when being threatened with tasing: More non-disclosing, clandestine implying, and non-acquiescing behavior - All highly out-of-context

5. Right hand in his pocket: Yes, it may be cold, and there could be a benign reason for it, however, this is a warning sign any cop, street-wise adult, or even child knows - and it's particularly suspect when a command is being given to "Get Your Hands Out of Your Pockets" by an officer

6. Index finger of the opposite hand extended (whether talking on a phone or pretending to): If this particular signal was not present, then, of course, all of the above behaviors would easily carry sufficient threat assessment weight which should have indicated to the officer that the suspect was very probably armed.

Yet, it's a profound nonverbal sign which very much adds nonverbal evaluation ...

This extended index finger signal (with or without a feigned or real phone call) is one, which, even if you're a cop, that you probably missed. An index finger extended in this setting carries a lot of meaning. It's a high alpha, high adrenaline, dominance display - when, in this particular context, the vast majority of people would normally be feeling very beta.
  
It's also a nonverbal gun metaphor - to have one's index finger (forefinger) extended with the other fingers contracted. At times, he was even pointing this "body language gun" symbol toward the officer prior to the literal gun was exposed.

His left index finger is in a high adrenaline state because his right index finger was also in a high adrenaline state (preparing to pull the trigger). One hand will mirror the other hand - especially in moments which are far from emotional baseline.

Body Language Analysis No. 3948: The Manchester Bomber, Nonverbal Communication, Threat Assessment, and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The image above (and the cropped close-up below) shows one of the few currently available photos of Salman Abedi - the alleged perpetrator of the recent bombing during at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. Tragically, 22 victims were killed and at least 120 others were injured.

Note the expression on Abedi's face - it's a mixture of both Contempt and Disgust. The elevated "snarl" appearance on HIS left side (e.g. the well-defined nasolabial fold [the furrow running from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth]), is particularly emblematic of Contempt. His mid-face tightness (in the "mustache area") is consistent with both of these emotions (although also more accentuated on his left - ergo contempt). His "droopy eyelids", while perhaps longstanding (e.g., congenital ptosis) - here serve as an amplifier of contempt and disgust. Abedi's backward head tilt also acts to intensify each of these emotions.

As human beings, we all occasionally feel - and thus display each of these feelings - but hopefully not very often or too intensely.

However, those who make such facial expressions frequently have a dramatically increased likelihood of having impulse control disorder (colloquially known as a "short temper"). Therefore in the context of significant disagreements, these individuals will tend to use physical force and outright violence to solve problems - rather than dialog, diplomacy, and reason.

Moreover, if we evaluate the real-time behavior and/or social media behavior record of the people who perpetrate terrorist activity or mass-shootings - we will observe a dramatic frequency of disgust and contempt - as well as anger (often there exists a mixture of these emotions)

With this in mind, it's not surprising that a senior person at the mosque which Abedi attended (the Manchester Islamic Centre aka Didsbury Mosque) reported that Salman Abedi looked at him with a "face of hate" after the imam gave a sermon denouncing terrorism and preaching against ISIS.

Summary: Careful observation of Nonverbal Behavior plays a crucial role in Threat Assessment and preventing violence. The perpetrator of the 2017 Manchester Bombing, Salman Abedi, is yet another example of an individual who exhibited such body language red flags. And while certainly not all of those who display chronic expressions of anger, contempt, and/or disgust will perpetrate terrorist activity - they will virtually always have impulse control disorder (thus you don't want to date them, hire them, be hired by them, vote for them, etc.).

My deepest condolences for all those who have suffered in this horrific event.
