Body Language Analysis No. 4089: Donald Trump's Reaction to Bob Corker's World War III Comment - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Earlier today, during an appearance with Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office, Donald Trump was asked about Senator Bob Corker's statement regarding the President moving us “on the path to World War III.”

The President responded, "We were on the wrong path before — all you have to do is take a look — if you look over the last 25 years — with numerous administrations, we were on a path to — a very big problem. A problem like this World has never seen. We’re on the path right now, believe me."

But just before he answered, during 0:04 to 0:05, he shook his head laterally (e.g., "No") as he made the expression captured in the image below.

Notice the President's lips. They are stretched horizontally - almost in a straight line - nearly disappearing in their extreme thinning. This is not an inward lip roll, although a nonverbal novice may confuse the two signals.

His "mustache area" is very tightened while simultaneously his nostrils are flaring.

The President's jaw is clenched (betrayed by his chin dimpling) and jutting forward (a "Jaw Jut").

It's surprising at the high percentage of people misinterpret this expression when it's directed at them in the everyday world. This nonverbal cluster is highly indicative of anger with a secondary component of frustration.

Summary: Senator Bob Corker's recent statements regarding President Trump, where he said the President is like "a reality show" and leading us on the "path to World War III" (not surprisingly) elicits a high level of anger in Donald Trump.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3391: Tense Exchange Between Mike Allen and Chicago Mayor Emanuel - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel had a tense exchange earlier today with Politico's Mike Allen when Allen revealed Emanuel's family vacation plans to Cuba which the Mayor considered private.

From a body language perspective, this provides us with a good number of nonverbal tells indicative of moderate (and higher) levels of anger - several of which are discussed below.





At 1:43, Note Emanuel's Lips - they are thinned out and narrow. They are also configured in a highly characteristic
horizontal configuration. 









Although his nostrils are flared in the above image, a second later (1:44), the flaring is more pronounced.








It's also important to notice the dynamics of his "mustache area" (the region above the upper lip and below the nose) - for here it has grown more tense.





During 1:45, we can see Mayor Emanuel's chin jut forward. Moreover, the tension has also increased in his lower eyelids

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2988: How did John Elway feel about Peyton Manning's Touchdown Record? (PHOTOS)

Those of you who are American football fans are of course fully aware that last night Peyton Manning broke Brett Favre's career record for touchdown passes. By the end of his play he had added another as well finishing the night with 4 touchdowns and with 510 for his career.

Of course, the Denver Broncos General Manager and Executive Vice President of Football Operations is John Elway. Elway captained the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances of which two were victorious - and also had 300 career touchdown passes (fifth all time in the NFL). Manning thus far has three career Super Bowl appearances - one with Denver and two with Indianapolis, however his only victory was with the Colts.

The following is a brief nonverbal analysis of John Elway captured immediately after Peyton's record 509th touchdown pass.

Obviously, Elway is clapping in the image above as well this second photo which shows his final clap - which is very conscious body language behavior. Evaluating his face however, even at this low resolution, we can see his thinned lips, an inward lip roll (partial), downward directed mouth corners, his mid-face tension, nostril flaring, eyelids partially and tightly closed, downward vectored eyebrows and, in the first image above, we can see the eyebrows are pulled together as well.

This nonverbal facial cluster configuration is consistent with anger-disgust - and is subconsciously generated.

Here all the above facial features persist with the exception of the addition of a greater degree of inward lip roll - consistent with a subconscious attempt to suppress his negative emotions - as his hands go in his pockets.

When a man puts his hands in his pockets (with the exception of deliberately posing for a picture) - it signals lower levels of emotional comfort, lower confidence and disengagement. Here Elway is a turtle wanting to go into his shell.

In this moment Elway's hands are fully inside his pockets - with the expression of disgust very clearly demonstrated.











In summary, John Elway has anger-disgust during the celebratory moments of Manning's record breaking performance. Although other possibilities exist, the context of this moment strongly suggests these emotions are either self-directed - e.g. Elway is feeling he could have and should have done better in his career - or they are being projected at Peyton Manning as a manifestation of jealousy.

It is also profoundly important to note that whenever a conscious body language act (e.g., clapping) is seen with unconscious nonverbals - it is the unconscious behaviors which betray the true emotions. Gloss over this caveat at your peril.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2894: Maria Kirilenko, Alex Ovechkin and Subtle Body Language of .... (PHOTOS)

Maria Kirilenko has called off her engagement to Alex Ovechkin. Although in this image, the Russian tennis professional may not be directing it at her then Hockey Player (Captain of the Washington Capitals) fiancé - she is feeling anger. Note that her eyes and face are not directly facing the object of her anger. When we do not like, do not respect or do not trust another - we tend to not direct our feet, our torso, our head or our eyes directly at them.

Ms. Kirilenko's jaw is clenched and simultaneously slightly jutting forward (ergo "Jaw Jut") - both nonverbal signals of anger.

Maria's mouth is foreshortened as her lips are thinned - particularly her upper lip. These signs are also significant for anger.

The area above Kirilenko's upper lip and her nose (termed the "mustache area" in both genders) is contracted and tense. This tension co-exists with nostril flaring.

What other very slight signals of anger are seen on Ms. Kirilenko's face?

Maria's face does not have a full expression of anger. There are other components of this emotion which are not present here. Moreover, nonverbal signals of all emotions may exist for fractions of a second (microexpressions). These subtleties of both proportion and time are only two reasons why many don't see emotions displayed right in front of them - and thus suffer their ramifications. How many emotional displays have gone unseen by you this week?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2861: Ronald Reagan and Variations on Thumbs-Up Body Language (PHOTOS)

Ronald Reagan is shown here with a disparity of two different emotions expressed nonverbally. The most obvious one is the universal emblem of the "Thumbs Up" - a Worldwide expression of optimism. This is a very conscious nonverbal.

However when we look at President Reagan's face - we see an entirely different emotional signal; Mr. Reagan's Jaw is clenched (note his dimpled chin muscles), his lips are horizontally configured and very thinned-out. Note also his nostrils are flared. The primary emotion Mr. Reagan is feeling here is Anger and the secondary one is Regret. These facial nonverbal signals are all initiated subconsciously.

Whenever there is a disparity between the nonverbal signals, the ones that are subconsciously generated are truly reflective of what another person is feeling while the consciously originated ones are deceptive.

On a different occasion we see the 40th U.S. President also displaying a thumbs up illustrator. Yet on his face we see a smile with a much higher sincerity quotient.

Here all of Reagan's nonverbal signals are congruent - and thus we know he believes the signal his thumb is sending.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2836: Phil Mickelson, Insider Trading Allegations and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Phil Mickelson finished The Memorial Tournament earlier today with a final score of 287 (-1) and tied for 49th. It was announced yesterday he is under investigation (along with activist-investor Carl Icahn and Las Vegas gambler Billy Walters) by the F.B.I. for possible insider trading.

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the video has since been deleted from its internet source.

From a body language perspective, although brief and little more than his face visible in the above video, we can make a definitive conclusion that Phil Michelson is innocent of insider trader allegations. More specifically his nonverbal, paralanguage and verbal statements are very congruent and consistent with a high sincerity quotient. Moreover he shows no signs of lying here. However other emotions are present. Can you detect what Phil is feeling?

Phil's eyelids are opened wider than normal (for anyone) and considerably wider than his baseline throughout much of this video clip.

This should narrow down the list of possible emotions - which ones does it bring to your mind?

If we look elsewhere on his face (to further narrow the body language diagnosis) in the package of a microexpression we see Phil's lips thin-out and grow very narrow. The contour of Lefty's lips take on a horizontal configuration. His "mustache area" is also temporarily tightened along with mild flaring of his nostrils. These changes all occur very briefly during the 0:06 mark of this video. This nonverbal cluster is highly consistent with anger. Phil is angry.

While multiple scenarios for the source of the 3 time Masters champion's anger are possible - when coupled together with the fact that he has no deception tells - as well as high sincerity - we can say with a very high confidence level Phil Mickelson is innocent.

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki broke off their engagement today. In the above video McIlroy says it is mutual. Based on the golfer's body language - what do you think? What follows below is a partial analysis of a video that's loaded with nonverbal signals.

At the 0:23 mark, McIlroy displays a quite significant anger tell with a prominent and very visible jaw jut after he says " ... we both thought it was for the best of us -you know - the best for both of us ..."

This mouth cover & near nose rub is significant for deception at the 0:39 mark as Rory (contrary to his declarative statement) absolutely does NOT think his form has been well.

While to some this nonverbal may resemble the first image above - it is a completely different emotion. This near-microexpression of regret appears at 0:45 just after he says he wants to "... I just want to, you know, dive straight into it ...."

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2725: Ted Nugent: Calls Barack Obama, "a Subhuman Mongrel" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last month Ted Nugent infamously called President Barack Obama a "subhuman mongrel". The video above includes Nugent using this slur. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

At the 0:56 mark, Nugent displays several nonverbal signals consistent with anger. When two or more body language configurations are seen simultaneously or nearly so, this is termed a "Cluster".

Here, the rocker juts his jaw forward while clenching it at the same time. There is also a dramatic thinning of his lips along with a tightening of the "mustache area".

At the 0:57 mark, we see demonstrated an extremely prototypical thinning of the lips. Even when seen alone, this extreme straight horizontal lip sign is a very reliable red flag for anger.





 

Nugent knows he's pushing it. Thus we see several times in this short clip (here a few tenths of a second after the photo immediately above), an example of a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") - here indicating "I've been bad", "I got caught", "I did a foolish thing" or "I got away with something".



Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered it can signal excitement or self-depreciating emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2673: New Jersey Bridge Closing - Fort Lee, NJ Mayor Mark Sokolich - What His Body Language Says about His Feelings towards Governor Chris Christie (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Lane closures on the George Washington Bridge (the busiest span in the Nation) - and which were initially blamed on a botched traffic study - have been shown to be Deliberate. Members of Governor Chris Christie's administration - or as some have implied the New Jersey Governor himself (though he has denied this) were apparently seeking revenge against Mayor (of Fort Lee, N.J.) Mark Sokolich, a Democratic, for not endorsing Christie in his re-election.

Early within the above video interview by CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Mayor Sokolich can be seen exampling a key cluster of nonverbals.

This image was captured at the 0:15 mark as Blitzer mentions Chris Christie being a possible 2016 Presidential Candidate. Mr. Sokolich's jaw is clenched - a clear signal of anger.

The Mayor's lips are also stretched very thin - another highly reliable anger sign. In addition, they are also rolling inward (a partial "Inward Lip Roll aka ILR) - yet due to his clenched jaw they have nowhere to go  (The ILR is a manifestation of the psyche attempting emotional suppression - usually negative, but sometimes positive emotions). This dynamic results in a "bunching up" of the tissue just below his lower lip, above his upper lip and to the sides (peri-lip bulges) - all of which are clearly seen in this moment. This action also creates a secondary, evanescent dimpling of the chin. Flaring of Mayor Sokolich's nostrils are also manifested here as his entire lower face is in high tension. There is also a strong component of bitterness in this facial expression.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2662: Mike Shanahan Fired - A Man of Many Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Mike Shanahan, the head coach of the Washington Redskins was fired today. In four years at the helm, Shanahan collected a record of 24-40 with just three wins this season.

Today is known in the National Football league as "Black Monday". As the first day after the end of the NFL's regular season it brings casualties every season and this year was no different. Four other coaches lost their jobs as well - the Minnesota Vikings fired coach Leslie Frazier, the Cleveland Browns let go of Rob Chudzinski, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waved goodbye to Greg Schiano and the Detroit Lions canned Jim Schwartz.

In the image above Mike Shanahan can be seen exhibiting several key body language components significant of anger. Note that his lips are thinned-out nearly to the point of disappearing. Shanahan's "Mustache Area" is also significantly tightened. These "Thinned Lips of Anger" are highly specific for anger and are often confused with an "Inward Lip Roll" (aka ILR).

Shanahan's clenched jaw (also highly consistent with anger) is betrayed by the concave-down furrow beneath his lower lip in addition to dimpling of the skin on the front of the coach's chin.

Eye are often partially closed with lower levels of anger (think Clint Eastwood in a Western) - however when the anger is moderate or higher, the eyelids will open wider. Shanahan is quite angry in this photo. What other emotions also have eyes opened "White and Wide"?

Although many beginners will only think of dilated nostrils (or a single nostril) in the context of disgust or contempt, significant anger also will be accompanied by flared nostrils. What are some other emotions with this nasal configuration?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2655: Edward Snowden's Alternative Christmas Message - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Edward Snowden, the infamous NSA leaker, was featured in the Britain's Channel 4's "Alternative Christmas Message" today (in contrast to Queen Elizabeth II's 2013 'Royal Christmas Message'). His brief statement is included in the above video. Below is a partial body language analysis.


Throughout much of the video, Edward Snowden displays body language/facial expression consistent with a lower level of contempt. There were several moments however, when his contempt was significantly amplified over this baseline level.

At 0:24 Snowden continues and compares our world today to the fictionalized

dystopia in '1984', "... Great Britain's George Orwell warned us of the danger of this kind of information. The types of collection in the book: microphones, and video cameras, T.V.'s that watch us - are nothing compared to what we have available today..." At the 0:37 mark, as he says, " ... we have ..." an example of his heightened contempt is displayed (in photo above).

At 0:48, Snowden goes on, "... A child born today, will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They'll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves - an unrecorded, un-analyzed thought ..."

At the 0:56 mark, as he says, "... it means ...", he again shows his intense level of contempt (photo to left).

At the very end of the video, the former subcontractor for the NSA, reveals an unmistakable nonverbal display of anger - thinned lips (configured horizontally and foreshortened) and his mid-face tightening. What other emotional expression is super imposed in this moment (1:41)?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2635: Raúl Castro and Barack Obama Shake Hands at Nelson Mandela's Memorial - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The big news from Nelson Mandela's Memorial Service today was Barack Obama's and Raúl Castro's handshake. It is being viewed as hints of a possible thaw between Washington and Havana, but what does the body language of the two leaders say?

At 0:02 seconds into the video, President Obama is jaunting up stairs, sees who is the top of the stairs and turns his head away to his right.

In this instant we see three distinct signals:
1. A Jaw Jut
2. A Bulge just below his Lower Lip (signaling his jaw is clenched)
3. Thinned and horizontally oriented lips


All of these are body language signals of anger - particularly when clustered.

At the 0:06 mark as they shake hands they bow towards each other.

In this wider angle handshake view (still at 0:06), take a few tenths of a second later, we can see that President Obama's hand is slightly more dominant oriented with approximately a 10 to 15 degree rotation.

In this image (0:09), Raúl Castro gestures with pats on his stomach. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) has a low sincerity quotient as it is a pat (vs. prolonged contact), it's his non-dominant hand and it is over his abdomen (vs. over his heart).

Note Obama maintains a partial bow.

Here Obama bows again - further (0:10 mark). It is unusual in the Western Hemisphere for extended or more pronounced bowing to occur during handshakes. Particularly with tall men (e.g. Obama) - when shaking shorter men's hands (Castro) it can be very often be interpreted by the shorter man as patronizing, condescending and arrogant - even though it may not be the intended message of the taller individual (who may indeed be vainly trying to signal respect) and may often signal weakness (of the more prominent bower) to others.

The Cuban President's lips are thinned in a brief anger (near-microexpression) display (above).

At 0:11 Castro's mouth takes on a brief "Bitter Smile" configuration.


Obama continues to bend forward - and he may very well be trying to speak candidly to Fidel's younger brother - yet the prolonged bowing (or bending) is negatively received. It painfully reminds shorter men of this weakness/perceived weakness.

Raúl Castro then looks away - as often is done during prolonged eye contact. His asymmetrical (mouth) smile is insincere.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2591: Chris Christie on Romney's Campaign Vetting Leak, Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Christie easily won re-election as Governor of New Jersey. In a state that is traditionally democrat strong hold, Christie won strong with ~60% of the vote.

During the 2012 Presidential campaign, when Mitt Romney's team was considering Christie for the V.P. slot, key personal vetting information was leaked. This occurred just after Christie was seen to be by many as trying to be over-friendly to President Obama in the days just after Hurricane Sandy - and just prior to the election.

Watch the video above first for your assessment of the Body Language Tells. A partial analysis of this video appears below.

Jake Tapper asks Governor Christie, "... If you were to ... look ahead, I can't help but think about this new book, 'Double Down', And I don't want to get into all the details, and I know you haven't read the book, but it seems very clear that when you submitted information, confidential information to the Romney campaign when they were considering you for Vice President - somebody violated that trust and gave information to the authors of this book. There'll be time later for you to address all those issues - but I wonder what you think about that - about the fact that - you trusted these people and, and one of them clearly betrayed you?"

During the 0:13 - 0:15 segment in particular, as Tapper says, "... confidential information ...", Gov. Christie's lips thin in a highly reliable nonverbal anger display. Although he does a good job at diminishing his anger after approximately two seconds, careful observation gives us a significant glimpse behind Christie's emotion curtain on this issue.

At 0:29, just after Tapper says, "... but I wonder what you think about ..." we see a subtle body language cluster of signals. There is once again a very slight thinning of Christie's lips along with a bit of nostril flaring, mild mid-face tightening and bilateral eyelid closure. All of these occur just as the Governor begins to reach for his tie and indicate anger-anxiety.

During the 0:30 - 0:32 segment, the possible 2016 Presidential Candidate displays a "Tie Stroke". A tie stroke is an example of a nonverbal MAP-surrogate. A MAP (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier) in short is a form of self-touching. Here Christie's tie is an extension of his body (thus a surrogate). MAPs are typically seen during times of increased anxiety. Depending on the other nonverbals with which they are clustered, MAPs can have different and more specific meanings.

A tie stroke is a less overt subconscious substitute for another body part, wherein the front, long portion of the tie is falsely adjusted, held, lifted, caressed or groomed during times of elevated anxiety - rather than touching a body part.

One common female analog for this behavior is adjusting or touching a necklace.
