Body Language Analysis No. 4195: Tom Brady and the Asymmetrical Smile - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Love him or hate him, there's no disputing Tom Brady is one of the greatest, if not the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. Brady is also no stranger to the camera. From a body language perspective, he often provides an excellent example of a specific nonverbal behavior - which although not uncommon, is a valuable practice - and yet rarely discussed.

During interviews, Tom Brady, with relative frequency, will express a partial and asymmetrical "smile". Body language beginners will claim that one-sided "smiles" are never sincere (Duchenne) smiles. And while they'd be correct a fair share of the time - there are also plenty of exceptions. It's crucial to be able to differentiate between these behaviors.

Provided there's absence of trauma or disease - sincere smiles when fully expressed, are equal on both the right and left sides of the face. In the split seconds of initiation, however, true joy-happiness smiles may begin more prominently on one side.

Whether he realizes it or not, Brady's frequent asymmetrical expression - essentially acts as a default setting. This low-level "almost smile" (while he's talking or pausing) primes both his brain - and those of the audience - to a heightened mood, such that everyone is more likely to break into a full smile - and even laughter. Indeed, comedians use this same technique.

Fascinatingly, practicing this sincere, suppressed (partial), one-sided, low-level, priming, sincere smile can even act as a mood-elevator.

Summary: Frequent, partial (sincere but suppressed), asymmetrical smiling primes both oneself and our audiences. Such practice considerably facilitates the interview process by engendering sincere smiles and true laughter. This technique can also be used as one mode of effective therapy in personal mood elevation.

Body Language Analysis No. 4175: Senator Dick Durbin Regarding President Trump's "Shithole Countries" Remarks - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In a meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday, it's alleged that President Donald Trump described African countries as well as Haiti, collectively as "shithole countries" during a meeting in which he also rejected a bipartisan plan on DACA (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program).

On Friday morning, via Twitter, President Trump denied making such a derogatory statement. Note Trump's lack of the word "I" in each of the first two sentences of denial. Such an omission of the singular first-person pronoun is a classic statement analysis pattern consistent with deception.

Senator Dick Durbin, who was in the Oval Office when the President allegedly made the statement regarding the incident. This is featured in the above video.

From a nonverbal behavior perspective, Senator Durbin sincerity quotient is high. More specifically - he shows no signals of deception.

Note the expression in the image immediately above - which was captured during 1:44 in the video (notated by Ω) as Senator Durbin says, "The most disheartening thing to me is Ω my belief that that was the first time words that hateful had been spoken in the Oval Office of the White House ..."

This expression, which was very evanescent (and thus classified as "microexpression") - is indicative of an amalgam of the emotions:

• Regret
• Frustration
• Sadness

Summary: Senator Dick Durban was in the Oval Office when President Donald Trump allegedly made his a statement referring to African countries and Haiti as "shithole countries". Senator Durbin's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior in the above video are all consistent with sincerity. More specifically, Senator Durbin displayed no signals of deception.

Additionally, President Trump's lack of the use of the word, "I" in each of his sentences of Twitter denial are classic statement analysis findings consistent with deception.

Body Language Analysis No. 4166: Logan Paul's Apology - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 31 December 2017, Logan Paul, a well known YouTube vlogger and actor, uploaded a video of himself and three other people in Aokigahara (aka, Japan's "Suicide Forest") showing their reactions after coming across the body of a man who had hanged himself. Less than a day later, the video was removed. In the video, although the man's face was blurred - the rest of his body was visible. Mr. Paul joked about what he had seen - later calling it a coping mechanism. The backlash towards Mr. Paul has been widespread. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the Logan Paul's video apology.

You'll notice that during the majority of this video, Mr. Paul's central forehead and inner (medial) eyebrows are elevated. Simultaneously, his mouth corners are also slightly down-turned in a "sad mouth" configuration. This expression is indeed consistent with sincere sorrow and empathy.

You'll also note that Mr. Paul's upper eyelids (more so on his left) are elevated significantly higher than baseline - indicating a heightened adrenaline level - as well as the anxiety-fear consistent with such a public apology (which is entirely within context).

Beginning at 1:08, however, Mr. Paul continues, "... um, the goal of my content - is always to entertain - to push the boundaries - to be all-inclusive. In the world I live in, I share - most everything I do - the intent is never to be heartless, cruel, Ω or malicious ..."

During 1:23 - 1:24, just after he says, "... the intent is never to be heartless, cruel ..." and just prior to saying, "... and malicious ...", Logan Paul displays a specific sub-type of a "Loose Tongue Jut" (notated by Ω ).

He juts his tongue out to one side...

... and then sweeps it to the opposite side.

As with the more typical loose tongue juts (seen earlier in Mr. Paul's apology during 0:22 - 0:23 and 0:55), not only does this Sweeping-Loose-Tongue-Jut signify the thought-emotions of "I've been bad", "I've been caught", "I've done a stupid thing" (Navarro) - but the additional sweeping dynamic also tells us that Mr. Paul doesn't believe what he is saying in this moment.

Summary: While Logan Paul is primarily being sincere in his apology - he also does believe, that some of his actions in the past have been deliberate and planned (not necessarily this event). In other words, Logan Paul felt at the moment he said, "the intent is never to be heartless, cruel, Ω or malicious..." - that he had, in fact, intended to be malicious, heartless, and/or cruel.

Body Language Analysis No. 4155: Luis Elizondo Interview - Former Military Intelligence Official Who Ran AATIP (The Pentagon's Secret UFO Unit) - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Luis Elizondo was the head of the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program (AATIP) - which began in the US Defense Intelligence Agency in 2007 and operated until 2012. He resigned from his position at the U.S. Pentagon in October 2017 to protest both the government's secrecy as well as government's opposition to the AATIP. In his resignation letter (to U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis) he stated that the program was not being taken seriously.

Mr. Elizondo was interviewed on Monday 18 December 2017 by CNN's Erin Burnett. A portion of that interview is included in the above video. What follows is a partial transcript of their dialog as well as partial nonverbal analysis of crucial portions of this interview.

ERIN BURNETT (beginning at 0:09): ... tell us what the purpose of the program was, and why it was so secretive.

LUIS ELIZONDO: Sure, Ahum - the purpose of the program, ah, Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was really designed to do just that - ahum - from a national security perspective - identify those things that we see, whether, ah, we see them electro-optically, we see them with radar, we see the ah, as ah, as eyewitness reports, ahum, through a myriad of different ways and avenues that we receive the information - and try to ascertain and determine if the information is a potential threat to national security Ω - in a nutshell.

During 0:46, just after he says, "national security", Mr. Elizondo displays an expression of Bitter-Regret.

ERIN BURNETT: So - what did you find?

LUIS ELIZONDO: Well we found a lot - ahum Ω ∆ - I think ah, I think it's probably been a little bit mischaracterized in some of the, the, th-, the social media you see ....

During 0:52, as he says "ahum" and for a split-second afterward, Mr. Elizondo again displays bitter regret Ω. Additionally, he closes his eyelids in a prolonged blink - which, when coupled with this mouth expression, is a regret amplifier.

It's profoundly important to stress that the Bitter-Regret expression is a nonverbal signal NOT seen DURING the telling of a lie.

Later in the interview:

LUIS ELIZONDO: (beginning at 3:16): ... when, when I ran this program, I was fundamentally looking at - my colleagues looking at two things:

ERIN BURNETT: Yeah?

LUIS ELIZONDO: 'What is it and how does it work?' Ahum, we have deliberately stayed away from going down the rabbit hole of 'Who's behind the wheel and what are their intentions?'

ERIN BURNETT: Yep

LUIS ELIZONDO: Because that - th- a lot of people have a lot of f, feelings toward that, and, and are very emotional about that, and what I wanted to do was - to allow the data to speak for itself and then use that data to inform leadership, senior DOD leadership, about the potential threat that, that, these type of, of technologies pose to national security - 'specially over any type of controlled airspace that we might have - ahum §- so I'm not trying to be evasive, ah, in any way, or vague your a-, with your answer but -

During 3:52, Mr. Elizondo displays a "Tight-Lipped" configuration - particularly true on his upper lip - as he says, "ahum" and just before he says, "... so I'm not trying to be evasive, ah, in any way, or vague ...". This Tight-Lipped nonverbal signal transmits a hesitancy to disclose - telling us that Luis Elizondo was withholding some information. His momentary gaze down and to his right, along with his elevated medial eyebrows and central forehead contraction (CFC) and amplifies this thought-emotion.

Summary: Luis Elizondo's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior shows he's clearly hesitant to reveal - and is indeed withholding some key findings of the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program.

Mr. Elizondo also has bitter-regret regarding either the ramifications of the discoveries made by the AATIP and/or the manner in which the government has dealt with these findings.

Luis Elizondo also believes he's being truthful and sincere when he implies that via the research performed by the AATIP, intelligent extraterrestrial craft have - and are continuing to visit Earth (This doesn't necessarily prove ETs have visited Earth - but Mr. Elizondo believes it to be so).

Body Language Analysis No. 4128: Roy Moore's youngest accuser, Leigh Corfman - Interview on "Today" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Leigh Corfman is, to date, the woman who was the youngest (14 years old) at the time when she alleges Roy Moore engaged in sexual behavior with her. In the video above, she tells of how Roy Moore, then an assistant district attorney, approached her and her mother in the county courthouse, drove her to his home twice - without the knowledge of her mother - kissed her, undressed her, and seduced her. At the time Roy Moore would have been 32 years old.

A thorough nonverbal evaluation of Ms. Corfman in this interview demonstrates complete honesty. Specifically, there are no signals of insincerity or deception.

One telling moment is captured and discussed here.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE (continuing at 6:42): A couple things, Roy Moore denies these allegations, and further says, he does not even - know you.

LEIGH CORFMAN: I wonder how many 'mes' he doesn't know?

Before, during - and to a greater extent after her answer, Leigh Corfman displays the expression shown in the above photo (6:54). In it, she projects a combination of Disgust and Anger. Intriguingly, men are significantly more likely than women to not see or mischaracterize this particular expression - and thus, also, are more blind to the emotions causing it.

Summary: Leigh Corfman's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage during this interview are all highly congruent. She is telling the truth regarding her interactions with Roy Moore in 1979.

Body Language Analysis No. 4101: Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson - Interview on Good Morning America - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 4 October 2017, Sgt. La David Johnson, along with three other US soldiers - Staff Sgt. Bryan Black, Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson,  Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright - as well as five Nigerien soldiers, were killed in an ambush in Tongo Tongo, Niger. Two American and eight Nigerien soldiers were also wounded in the attack.

Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson was interviewed on Good Morning America today. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Ms. Johnson's conversation with George Stephanopoulos.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Are you confident you're going to get the answers you need?

MYESHIA JOHNSON: If I keep pushin' for 'em I will.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: And they just say they don't know?

As George Stephanopoulos, says, "And they just say they don't know?" (during 2:57), and for about a second afterward, Myeshia Johnson displays a "Lateral Jaw Thrust" to her right. This is vectored away from the camera, which makes it a bit difficult to see.

A lateral jaw thrust is indicative of High Sincerity and Strong Determination.

MYESHIA JOHNSON: Yes, the President said he knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyways.

As she says, "... anyways" (during 3:57), Ms. Johnson displays Anger with the evanescent depression of her eyebrows, especially her medial eyebrows

During 4:05, as Ms. Johnson said, "And I was - it made me cry, because - I was very angry at the w-, the tone in his voice ...", she displayed Contempt.

Then, during 4:06 as she said, "and how he said - I, he, he c-, he couldn't remember my husband's name ...", Myeshia Johnson felt and displayed Disgust

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (5:04): What did you say to the President?

MYESHIA JOHNSON: I,  I didn't s-, I didn't say anything.

During her answer, Ms. Johnson first projects her lower lip forward. She then shakes her head side-to-side, leans to her right, stutters, focuses her eyes at the mid-distance, and displays a Regret expression (pictured above during 5:08). This combination of nonverbal signals are indicative of Anxiety, Hesitation, and Regret and are best viewed in the dynamic context of the video.

During 5:13, just after she says, "I just listened", Myeshia Johnson displays an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). An inward lip roll is a subconsciously initiated attempt to suppress both the inward crescendo and the outward display of strong emotions.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: But you were upset when you got off the phone?

MYESHIA JOHNSON: Oh, very, very upset and hurt - very. It made me cry even worse.

From 5:18 through 5:22, Ms. Johnson's eyelids lower in another display of Anger (image immediately above).

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: The President said that the Congresswoman was lying about the phone call.

MYESHIA JOHNSON: Whatever Ms. Wilson said was not fabricated. What she said was a hundred percent correct. It was Master Sargent Neil, me, my Aunt, my Uncle, and the drive, and Ms. Wilson in the car. The phone was on speakerphone. [Tongue in Cheek Display during 6:19] Why would we fabricate something like that?

A Tongue in Cheek display indicates the high confidence thought-emotions of "I just won"/"I gotcha".

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Is there anything you'd like to say to the President now?

MYESHIA JOHNSON: [Lip Smack] No [lateral head shake, low amplitude, moderate frequency] I don't - Nah - I don't have nothin' to say to him.

During 6:29, as she says, "... Nah ...", Ms. Johnson displays a classic Contempt expression.

After Ms. Johnson's interview on Monday morning, President Trump responded via Twitter (immediately above).

Summary: Ms. Myeshia Johnson displayed a myriad of emotions during this interview including determination, anger, contempt, disgust, anxiety, and high confidence. And although she did not express so verbally, Myeshia Johnson's nonverbal signals show that she regrets not responding to President Trump during the phone call.

Myeshia Johnson's sincerity and honesty quotients are high - and specifically, at no time during this interview did she display any nonverbal signals of deception.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3869: James Clapper regarding Alleged Wiretap of Trump - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

James Clapper was a guest this morning on Meet The Press. Mr. Clapper is the immediate former Director of National Intelligence (serving from August 9, 2010 until January 20, 2017).

What follows is the transcript of the currently available on-line video of Mr. Clapper's interview with Chuck Todd, as well as a partial nonverbal analysis.

CHUCK TODD: Ah, let me start with the President's tweets, ah, yesterday, ah, this idea that maybe President Obama ordered an illegal wiretap of his offices - if something like that happened, would this be something that you would be aware of?

JAMES CLAPPER: I would certainly hope so. Ah, I, I can say, obviously I'm not, I can't speak officially anymore, ah, but I will say that for (0:19 - 0:21) the part of the National Security apparatus that I oversaw as DNI, there was no such wiretap activity mounted against the ah, the Pres-, the President-elect at the time, as a candidate, or against his campaign. Ah, I can't speak for, ah, other title-III authorized, ah, entities in the government, or, ah, a state or local entity.

TODD: Yeah, ah, I was just going to say, if the FBI, for instance, d- had a FISA Court order for some sort, for a surveillance, would that information you would know or not know?

CLAPPER: (over-talking): Yes.

TODD: You would be told things.

CLAPPER: I would know that.

TODD (over-talking): If there was a FISA Court order -

CLAPPER (over-talking): Yes.

TODD: On something like this, um -

CLAPPER (over-talking): Something like this, absolutely.

TODD: - and at this point, you can't confirm or deny whether that exists?

CLAPPER: I can deny it. (1:00 - 1:02, Head Torque)

TODD: There is no FISA court order

CLAPPER: Not, not to my knowledge.

TODD: Of anything at Trump Tower?

CLAPPER: No.

TODD: Well that's an important, ah, revelation at this point.

Nonverbal Analysis:

During 0:19 - 0:21, as Mr. Clapper says, "... I will say that for ...", he displays what is known as a Self-Righteous Head Wiggle (SRHW). As the name implies, a self-righteous head wiggle is displayed by those who have a high confidence that the opinion or idea which they're expressing is correct. Such individuals have emotional tones, that are for the moment, in a high alpha state. A SRHW is comprised of a relatively rapid, side-to-side movement of the head-neck - and often the torso too - as well as occasionally with the jaw.

Don't confuse the SRHW with what, in this example, occurred just prior to it - when Mr. Clapper is adjusting/twisting his butt and back toward the back of his chair. This maneuver is an example of what is known as an "Alpha-Up Regulator" (of which there are many). It signals a person (usually in an already alpha mindset) recognizes (subconsciously and at the edge of consciousness) the need to be a bit more assertive and thus, is metaphorically "stepping up to the plate" (rather than shrinking back). Clapper knows he is no longer Director of National Intelligence, yet he feels the need and responsibility - for the moment, to speak with the authority which he carried only a short time ago.

This behavior is not able to be well-represented in a photograph - please view the video to appreciate the full dynamic nature of this body language.

Later in the video:

During 1:00 - 1:02, as James Clapper says, "I can deny it", he displays what is known as a "Head Torque". A head torque is also a high-alpha signal. It's composed of a twisting (rotating) motion of the head and neck - together with a simultaneous thrusting forward of the head. A head torque signals a particularly determined and adamant emotional tone.

While not required (but is seen here), the additional component of prolonged or prominent blinking/eyelid closure, in this context, acts as an adamant-amplifier.

It's also common that a head torque is accompanied with anger and/or frustration - however, neither of these emotions are present in this moment of head torquing.

A head torque is also a significantly dynamic nonverbal signal, please watch the video.

Summary: Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper's nonverbal behavior in this video segment, indicates he is being sincere and honest when he said that there was no FISA Court Order under his jurisdiction for the surveillance of Donald Trump, Trump's campaign or Trump Tower - and if there were, he would have known about it.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3861: Emma Stone, The Oscars and Sincerity - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

At the time of this writing, the 2017 Academy Awards have already begun. It's an hour or so before we know if Emma Stone will win an Oscar for "Best Actress in a Leading Role" for her portrayal of Mia Dolan in the film La La Land.

During this recent interview with Lee Cowan, Ms. Stone displays several excellent body language signals.

In the image above, Emma is reunited with a childhood mentor, Bobb Cooper of the Valley Youth Theater in Phoenix. Notice that during their hug, although Ms. Stone is not much shorter than Mr. Cooper, when she hugs him, she elevates up on her toes - with both feet - for an extended period of time. Although, of course, such toe elevation during a hug is not at all required for a sincerity to be present - we can be sure that when it is performed bilaterally (that is, with both feet) and for an extended time, it indeed is a signal that high sincerity and true affection are being experienced (and projected).

In this next image, Ms. Stone and Mr. Cowan are fairly closely mirroring each other. We cannot see most of Cowan's hands - but we can see much of Emma's. She is displaying a good example of an "Alpha-Beta Hybrid". As the categorical name implies, these are a class of nonverbal behaviors which are not too alpha - not too beta, but somewhere intermediate. To slice it even thinner, this particular alpha-beta hybrid is a bit closer to the alpha end of the scale (but certainly not "Hyper-Alpha).

Much of the time when the hands are positioned in the pockets - it does project a beta and sometimes submissive/low confidence emotional tone. Depending on the dynamics, the coexisting verbal cues and the other nonverbal signals with which it may be clustered - hands in the pockets can even be a signal for deception. Yet these examples don't apply to Stone in this scenario - for only her fingers on her right hand (and slightly more on her left) are in her pockets. Moreover, these are her front pockets - allowing a more assertive variation of an "Arms Akimbo" configuration. Her elbows, which are protruding laterally - but not excessively so, is an alpha quality.

Notice too, each of Emma's thumbs are hooked in her belt loops. This is a stronger alpha component adding to this body language cluster, and indeed contains a significant element of sexuality (not for her interviewer, rather that she is "on camera", being herself - rather than a character. This feeling of being "on display", given the right setting and situation, can make a person feel confident and sexy.

This last image is on the set of Saturday Night Live (which Stone has hosted on three occasions). Her "Thumbs Forward Arms Akimbo" is another example of an Alpha-Beta Hybrid body language display. When the thumbs are positioned forward (and thus the palms are directed up), it projects a confident, open-minded and supportive emotional tone. Depending on the other nonverbal signals present, there may also be an inquisitive component present too.

Good Luck Emma Stone!

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3842: Bill Belichick and Julian Edelman - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Bill Belichick doesn't seem to smile much, let alone laugh. However after such a phenomenal Super Bowl LI victory and his fifth Championship Ring, the Patriots' Head Coach let down his guard on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show.

This moment shows an excellent example of Sincere Laughter (5:35). Moreover Belichick's laughter is also quite deep.

Sincere laughter may have a forehead which is relaxed or contracted - but during sincere smiling the forehead is ALWAYS relaxed.

True Laughter may show both upper and/or lower teeth, while sincere smiling ONLY displays upper teeth (with the exceptions of smiling crescendoing to, or decrescendoing from sincere laughter - or with a high camera/visual angle and/or with a tilting down of the head).

Sincere smiling ALWAYS has eye lids which partially or nearly entirely closed. This is also ALWAYS accompanied by a dynamic, concave-up furrow in the lower eyelids. This is well exemplified on both Bill Belichick and Julian Edelman. During sincere laughter which is both sincere and deep, the eye lids virtually always close - often very tightly.

Congratulations to the New England Patriots for what many will say was the most exciting football game they've ever seen.
