Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2969: Maggie Q, David Letterman, Empathy and Sincerity Quotients - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Watching an actor being interviewed is a fantastic illustration of the inability to suppress nonverbal tells. When body language is squelched in one area - it "leaks" in another spot - and disproportionately greater. Even people who act for a living are not exempt. "Stalker" and "Nikita" star Maggie Q was a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman today and she is no exception to this maxim. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

[Unfortunately, the original video had been deleted, however the images below capture well the nonverbal signals discussed.]

At 0:07 Maggie Q readjusts in her chair and almost looks as if she tried to stand and then decided against it.

Simultaneously she displays an Inward Lip Roll (ILR) indicating she is trying to suppress the full expression of an emotion (usually negative) - both outwardly and inwardly.

The action star is very nervous.

During the 0:08.5 - 0:11 segment, she scratches her right arm. This nonverbal belongs to a category known as MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) and this self-touching is a general anxiety indicator.

She repeats a similar configuration intermittently throughout the video and she continues to grip the arm of her chair tightly.

At 0:10 she begins, "I was just, ya know, kind of a broke student. And then I made my way over to Asia somehow, ummm."

Dave then says, "Did you have a plan in mind?"

She answers, "No. That woulda, that woulda been smart [nervous laughter]".

At 0:15 we see her jaw shift quickly and briefly to her left (as Dave finishes his question "... plan in mind?"). This huge tell is a "Jaw Confessional" and is often seen just prior to a disclosure of an embarrassing past act or thought. It is a sign of a person in the midst of a moment of high sincerity. A slow and prolonged jaw to one side (looks like the jaw confessional in slow motion) has a completely different meaning.

At 0:31, Maggie Q displays a "Palm to Sternum" nonverbal. Touching the sternum or over the heart (left upper chest) - particularly with the palm of the hand is another signal of high sincerity and as well as elevated empathy.

During 1:24 - 1:25 we see more "Palmar Touch".

Maggie's mentor/friend from her  Hong Kong days (Meyan, unsure of her name's English spelling) is seen here at the 1:50 mark. Hands clasped or in praying configuration in front of the mouth, neck or upper chest - provided they are clustered with other congruent nonverbals - is a strong sign of emotional processing. It is seen when a person witnesses or realizes something particularly good (thus a "Surreal Signal") or especially bad

This is also another signal of those with both high sincerity and high empathy.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2968: President Obama tells a Lie in Jest and yet ... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

When a lie is told in jest or a hyperbole is spoken - "everyone is in on it" - thus the shared lie or gross exaggeration becomes part of the psychology of the joke or story. A similar phenomenon occurs in the scenario of a "white lie". The consequences of being caught in these "little lies" are minimal - if anything at all. Moreover it is a fundamental nonverbal axiom that the ability to convincingly commit a deception is proportional to the ramifications of being caught.

With the above premise in mind, it is very interesting to note that recently at the Clinton Global Initiative event when Barack Obama said, "I was just discussing with [ear rub] President Clinton that if ah Chelsea begins delivery while I'm speaking - she has my motorcade and will be able to navigate traffic ..." he rubbed his right ear.  This act demonstrates that the President is not a "good liar", for even in the context of a shared-joke his body language still betrays him.

Note also that the President's downward head-neck configuration and his prolonged eyelid closure add congruity and thus validity to this cluster-context of deception.

Nonverbal Communication Quiz-Analysis No. 2967: George Clooney & Amal Alamuddin Wed in Venice - All The World's a Stage - Sincerity level of Smiles (PHOTOS)

George Clooney and Human Rights Attorney Amal Alamuddin were married yesterday in Venice.

Few people know what it feels like to be under the paparazzi's constant attention - so let's not be too critical of Mr. Clooney's expressions exampled here. These images do however provide a great rapid-contrasting of similar facial expressions in an effort to suss sincerity and discern emotional dissonances.

There is obvious playfulness transpiring in the moment above. What emotion is Ms. Alamuddin is feigning here?  Yet very many "smile" with a mouth configured as her's is here.

Do we have enough information to determine Mr. Clooney's true thought-emotion in this moment?

It can not be stressed enough that if a person is not being sincere in any given moment, that it speaks to that moment only - and not their entire personality or character.

What feature precludes a sincere smile here?

A different feature (vs. the photo immediately above) tells us this smile is not sincere - what is it?

It is important to note that many sincere smiles are not extreme (e.g. "ear to ear"); many are partially or mostly suppressed and thus possess minimal mouth components.

On a scale from 1 to 10, what would you rate the level of George's sincerity with this smile?

A least three thought-emotions are present in this moment - what are they?

Although you don't know the source of his emotional dissonance, you should be able to label three emotion-thoughts in this moment.

What is Mr. Clooney's "Sincerity Quotient" here?

Does this expression display true joy-happiness?

What feature in this moment rules out a joy-happiness smile?

"Mr. Alamuddin" is experiencing Emotional Dissonance here,
yet what are emotions present?

What does Clooney's hand position suggest about his facial expression?

Given the features of his forehead, his mouth and his mid-face, can we make an accurate prediction about the configuration of George's eyes?

Do we need to see George's eyes to decide whether or not this smile is sincere?

What three thought-emotions is George thinking-feeling in this moment?

Are his eyes consistent with that of a Duchenne Smile in this instant?

What is Clooney's sincerity quotient here, 1 to 10?

Is enough of George's face visible in this image to tell if his smile is sincere?

Congratulations George and Amal. Be joyful.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2965: A Variation of a Microexpression of Contempt Commonly Confused & Disguised (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Segments of this interview (regarding pictures in the yearbook and who is "most likely to skinny dip") with assistant Principal Garrick Matthews of Portales High School in Portales, New Mexico are shown several times within the above video news segment. Here we see exampled a very common, yet profoundly rarely appreciated manifestation of contempt. It is both very short lived - thus a microexpression - as well hidden as cleverly camouflaged. However this masquerade is indeed subconscious - folded inside a sniff. He does not know he's trying to disguise this thought-emotion.

Note as Assist. Principle Matthews begins speaking at 1:38.5, "I can't change it, but I can tell people who were going to [sniff] try to make sure that those sorts of things, you know, don't happen in the future."

1:40 "Sniff-Camouflaged Microexpression of Contempt"

In addition to this clandestine nonverbal display of contempt, a few seconds later as he says, " ... you know, don't hap..." the school administrator signals us with prolonged bilateral eyelid closure - which in this cluster-context is a contempt amplifier

1:42 - 1:46

Contempt Amplifier
of Bilateral Eyelid Closure

It is important to point out that although we are sure he feels contempt, in this short interview we cannot tell for whom he feels it - e.g., the students, the adults on the yearbook staff, the news crew, etc.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2964: Eric Holder Interview After Announcing Resignation - Microexpressions and other Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The day after he announced his resignation as U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder gave an interview with Pete Williams. The above video includes a brief portion of this interview and provides significant insight into the thought-emotions of Mr. Holder as he answered these questions. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

During the 0:48 mark, we see a microexpression of fear as he speaks about situations similar to Ferguson, Missouri.

"I think part of it has to do with, um, the lack of knowledge on the part of, [fear microexpression] ah, certain communities - communities of color, to understand the fear ...."

(continued dialog from above)
"....that police officers have - in just being on the streets ...."

As he says "... have ..." (at 0:53) his mouth movements are exaggerated.
Melodramatic mouth movements are highly significant for the speaker believing that they have dominance over those viewing them.

Note this "pecking order" point-of-view often is NOT congruent with the words being spoken (or what others may believe/think about who is in charge). Such a disparity is always a red flag - for when the verbal and the nonverbal signals are in disagreement, the nonverbal is always representative of the true thought-emotions.

"... when it comes to certain police officers, the notion of implicit bias - looking at people and having stereotypical reactions to them."

More hyperbolic mouth motion is seen as Mr. Holder says, "... reactions ..." (at 1:02) again signifies his belief/knowledge in his relative alpha status.

"Well I think the, the level of vehemence that has been directed my way I think has been perhaps a little different than, um, I have seen, ah, other attorneys general have to, have to deal with."

When he says, "... little ..." at 1:25, Mr. Holder displays a classic microexpression of contempt.

(1:40 - 1:45)

".... and I don't like the idea that I'm necessarily leaving before the end of his term - but it's ah - it's the right time for me to go."

This is a moderate, intermittent nonverbal expression of regret - and is completely congruent with the verbal message.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2963: Barack Obama at the United Nations General Assembly regarding ISIS/ISIL, 24 September 2014 - Body Language Faux Pas (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Barack Obama, along the other heads-of-state, has been meeting at the United Nations General Assembly the last several days. During this segment of his speech where he spoke of ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State, President Obama committed a highly significant body language faux pas on multiple occasions - which for him is rare. In this brief video (above), the President used the index finger (forefinger) point nine times. Some were certainly less obtrusive - such as pointing downwards (3:06 - 3:10) and others when he pointed briefly at himself or to his right (2:48, 2:45 and 2:19 - 2:21), however with the majority of these - he pointed directly at the audience (see below). Index finger pointing is a profoundly negative nonverbal and moreover it's considered universally offensive in virtually every culture and subculture on the Earth. This has been true throughout recorded history.

The President has much better body language instinct than average - so why was he off his game yesterday? People who point with their forefingers with high frequency (and not just on a given occasion) have an extremely high rate of narcissism. It is also important to consider the autism spectrum disorders. Barack Obama does not point frequently. Two other possible causes include anger and/or alpha emotional tones - both of which are playing out in these speeches. What are some other thought-emotions correlative with a forefinger point?

Politicians will often point at their audiences when in front of their political base - which is still not recommended (yet there is wider latitude for mistakes is allotted in such scenarios). However it is very unwise to do so when seeking rapport, votes or trying to building a coalition - all of which are needed here.

There were several other highly significant nonverbal errors used in this speech. How many of these have you also committed recently?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2962: Denzel Washington, Lenny Kravitz & David Letterman - Body Language of .... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This interaction between friends - Lenny Kravitz and Denzel Washington on "The Late Show with David Letterman", provides a great teaching example on the body language of witnessing deception and sincerity. Kravitz is recounting the movies featuring Washington that the two watched on a boat of the coast of Italy. Most people probably don't believe Kravitz when he says, ".... I got him to watch - all of his movies. We sat on that boat ....." (Did you catch the telling pause just before he says, "... all ...", during 1:19? What other verbal indicators of deception did you hear?).

In this image (captured at 1:33) we see a brief "tongue in cheek" display. Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, the tongue in cheek can indicate several thought-emotions.

Here it is the witnessing of deception (What else can it indicate?).

Note the dramatically increased blinking frequency Denzel exhibits for a few seconds before and after this moment (1:29 - 1:34). What other nonverbals support Denzel is being sincere and witnessing a lie?

A nose rub/nose touch a moment later (during 1:34 - 1:36) is another highly reliable portion of this deception-witnessing cluster.

It is a profoundly important point to make - that even though Denzel Washington is an two-time Academy Award winning actor, when he is "being Denzel", he is subject to all the same nonverbal tells as those whom are unschooled in acting. Despite all his experience and expertise - he can't suppress them.

If Denzel were the one who was telling a fib, in what manner would his body language differ?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2961: KTVA Reporter Quits on-air, Drops F-Bomb and Reveals Herself as Owner of Alaska Cannabis Club - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Just after lets the World know she is the owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club - and in the moment right before she dropped the F-bomb and quit, KTVA reporter Charlo Greene displays a nonverbal cluster of fear.

During the 0:13 second mark, Ms. Greene's eye lids opened wider than her baseline - particularly on her right. Both of her mouth corners also pulled backwards (laterally) baring primarily her lower teeth. The reporter's neck muscles (platysma and sternocleidomastoids) also can be seen to tighten up momentarily. Her eye nonverbals were longer in duration (about 1.5 seconds) than her mouth and neck manifestations - which here are brief enough here to be considered microexpressions

The splaying of her fingers on her left hand is also consistent with a momentary heightened adrenaline state.

In response, the news anchor's right eyebrow elevates - signaling disbelief - yet her eyelids (also primarily her right) also open wider than her baseline - again manifesting fear. Her mouth is configured in mild fear as well.

What other classic nonverbals do you see displayed in this video?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2960: First iPhone 6 Dropped in Perth - Body Language Cluster of .... (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Last week the first iPhone 6s were released and millions were of course purchased. Jack Cooksey bought the first one in Perth, Australia - and immediately obliged a T.V. reporter when she asked to show it on camera. Unfortunately his adrenaline was a bit elevated and as he opened the box, his new iPhone fell onto the sidewalk. Ouch.

The expression/movements on/of the reporter's face afterward provides us with a good example of a nonverbal cluster of embarrassment including:
  • Facial Blushing
  • Prolonged Bilateral eye closure
  • Tongue Jut
  • Head Shaking side-to-side
  • Sincere Suppressed Smile
What other body language signals did you observe in this video which indicates embarrassment?

Not only does the reporter feels it's her fault - she also has a high empathy quotient. How do we go about assessing a person's empathy level?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2959: The Hunger Games Mockingjay - What makes Donald Sutherland (as President Coriolanus Snow) look so Evil? Body Language Trailer Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Another Trailer for "The Hunger Games Mockingjay: Part 1" was released a few days ago. In this movie adaptation Donald Sutherland plays President Coriolanus Snow. Sutherland is a very good actor and thus he's good at looking evil when he wants to - and here he definitely wants to project madness. This provides a good nonverbal teaching moment to dissect one of the many nonverbal manifestations of crazy.

In general facial asymmetry is very common in the presence of  insincerity (However it's not always indicative though). In addition a person can be insincere during moments of symmetrical facial expression). President Snow is displaying considerable asymmetry here - most conspicuously with his eyes - as he speaks to Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). With regards to mild-to-moderate anger, the eyes are partially closed and tense (particularly visible in the lower eyelids). This is seen on Sutherland's right eye. However with severe-to-extreme anger (rage), the eyes open wider - as is exampled on Sutherland's left. This asymmetry combined with two different levels of anger projects a "crescendo of crazy".

Be sure not to overlook the fact that his eyebrows are also drawn both together and directed downwards. This is also highly indicative of anger.

Whenever a mouth smile exists with contradictory body language on the eyes or forehead (or both) this should strike us always peculiar - and it profoundly projects emotional dissonance. Think of this disparity as a body language metaphor for irony. Whenever irony is found, it is a signal that there is either a lack of knowledge on the part of the observer - or deception on the part of those being observed. In this case it is the latter.

What other crucial component of Coriolanus's nonverbals diminishes our trust and elevates our dislike for him?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2958: Jameis Winston's Suspension - Press Conference - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jameis Winston, Florida State University quarterback and the 2013 Heisman Trophy Winner is shown in this video during a press conference earlier this week. Winston spoke here when he (and everyone else) thought he was going to be suspended for the first half of the Clemson game. Last night FSU's interim President Garnett Stokes and athletics director Stan Wilcox signed an email indicating their new decision that Winston was going to be suspended for the full game citing the results of a "continuing investigation" for Winston's behavior this past Tuesday of standing on a table and yelling obscenities. Jimbo Fisher, FSU's head coach signature was not included in this email.

What follows is a partial analysis of Winston's Body Language:

0:11 seconds

Tongue Jut signaling, "I've been bad", "I got caught" or "I've got away with something".

In other nonverbal contexts it can be part of excitement or a self-deprecating cluster (not applicable in this cluster-context).

0:23 seconds

After saying "...I'm not a 'me person' ...", Jameis Winston tilts his head back with his chin forward in a clear nonverbal display of arrogance and defiance. In this moment, Winston's verbal message is highly contradictory to his nonverbal behavior. Whenever these two are in disparity, the nonverbal is always indicative of the true thoughts-emotions.

0:27 seconds

A display of "I regret it, but I disagree".

Another clear signal of insincerity.

0:28 seconds

A shrug indicates, "I don't know", "I don't care" or "What does it matter".

0:31seconds

An "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) tells us that Winston is trying to suppress an emotional crescendo as well as a more overt nonverbal display.

Inward lip rolls may suppress any emotion but they are most often seen with negative ones (e.g. anger, sadness, frustration, etc.)

0:36 seconds

Another Inward Lip Roll

0:39 seconds

Third consecutive ILR

0:40 seconds

Another Shoulder shrug

0:42 seconds

Extended exhale

This is indicates relief after a stressful event and is similar to the "Puffer Fish" nonverbal - yet his cheeks never bulge very much because of his jaw simultaneously jutting forward (signifying a persistent anger component now waning) preventing any significant cheek puffing.

Taken in toto, Jameis Winston does not believe his recent action of standing on a table and shouting obscenities are proportionate to being suspended from playing football. His apology is insincere.

Winston has been accused of several crimes including rape but he was never charged.
