Body Language Analysis No. 4178: Donald Trump, "I'm the Least Racist Person", DACA ... and Kevin McCarthy's Anxiety - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Sunday, Donald Trump arrived at his International Golf Club in Florida. House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy was by his side as the President fielded questions from the Press. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this exchange.

After proclaiming, "No, no, I'm not a racist, I am the least racist person you have ever (pause) interviewed, that I can tell you ...", and answering questions regarding North Korea - as well as DACA, and a possible government shutdown - Kevin McCarthy's nonverbal displays grew increasing noteworthy.

In this close crop of the above screen-grab image, the House Majority Leader's Central Forehead is Contracted (CFC) - and, along with his inner (medial) eyebrows - are elevated.

Crucially, any CFC must be interpreted in the context of simultaneous mouth configuration. As the corners of Representative McCarthy's mouth are down-turned, his overall facial expression projects Emotional Pain.

The camera angle doesn't pan-outward to a wider angle until the subject returned to DACA - but when it did we can see that Representative McCarthy was twisting his wedding ring. Immediately prior to our view of this, President Trump had been speaking about North Korea, a possible government shutdown, and denying he was racist.

Summary: Twisting one's ring - particularly a wedding ring - is a reliable symbol of anxiety. The conjunction of such ring rotation together with McCarthy's facial expression of emotional pain - telegraphs an amplified anxiety level. Representative McCarthy was anxious, beta, and emotionally uncomfortable standing next to President Trump.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2858: Hope Solo, Domestic Violence, Arrests and Wedding Rings - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Hope Solo, goalkeeper for the Seattle Reign FC and two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist, was arrested earlier today for alleged domestic violence against her sister and her nephew.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the recent video interview above (17 April 2014) and sheds some light on probable underlying causes behind her alleged violence.

Many times throughout this video, Hope twists her wedding ring. This is a strong indicator of anxiety - and more specifically within the context of her marriage.

Hope Solo is married to former professional football (American Style) player Jerramy Stevens.

And although Solo's been interviewed many times on national television under more what otherwise would otherwise be more stressful conditions, the dramatic frequency of this recent body language display indicates greater anxiety "beneath the surface" and foreshadows a break-up in her marriage.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2659: Mark Wahlberg, his Wife and "Lone Survivor" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Mark Wahlberg was recently on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" promoting his just released film, "Lone Survivor" as well as his new reality series, "Wahlburgers". Below is a partial body language analysis.

At 1:17 Wahlberg displays a unilateral microexpression of regret (unilateral example - note that regret can be bilaterally expressed as well) just after he says, "... I tried to introduce them to the BB gun, but my wife [Rhea Durham] was having no part of it ...".

Do not mistake this for the somewhat similar expression of contempt. Can you differentiate these nonverbals?

A fraction of a second later, Wahlberg displays a bilateral eyelid closure. In such a context, this is a nonverbal amplifier of the just-shown regret signal.

At 2:49, Kimmel asks, "Does your wife know about this?"

Wahlberg answers, "She did hear about it but ah, you know but he's crazy!..."

Wahlberg reaches for and then briefly twists his wedding ring - displaying a signal specific of marital-related anxiety.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2399: Matthew McConaughey on David Letterman and a Very Common Body Language Tell

Recently Matthew McConaughey appeared on David Letterman to promote his new movie "Mud". Despite the fact that he is a very talented and accomplished actor, when he is on camera in an interview - he still feels anxiety. This is demonstrated multiple times in the video clip above. Below are just some examples.

At four different times Mr. McConaughey twists his two rings. On the first two occasions these are concommittant with him discussing his children (1:11 - 1:13) or his children & his wife (2:53 - 3:03, possibly extending to 3:09). Both of these times Mr. McConaughey twists his wedding ring (left ring finger, pictured below). This is an example of a MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) and is a nonverbal indicator of anxiety. In particular twisting the wedding ring displays a higher levels of anxiety compared with a ring on any other finger. A wedding ring is of course a visual metaphor for and highly congruent with wife and family.

On the other two occasions where Matthew turns his ring, it involved the ring finger of his right hand - also indicative of anxiety - but at a significantly lower level. The subjects about which he was speaking were the setting of his new movie - rural Arkansas (5:50 - 5:55) and upon seeing a tape of Matt Damon perform his impression of him (McConaughey) and then throughout more verbal description and movie trailer setup (7:45 - 8:12).

Mr. McConaughey's body language shows he places a higher value on, and has significant more anxiety for his family than the other subjects discussed.
