Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3077: Caroline Wozniacki & Rory McIlroy - One Reason Why Relationships Fail - and an Important Warning Sign (PHOTO)

When a woman is equal to, almost the same height - or taller than her boyfriend, fiancé, or husband - she will very often discontinue wearing heels. This body language behavior is particularly strong in the context of a relatively new relationship. What are the reasons for this? - the woman wants to feel feminine, she also wants to make her man feel masculine - and she does not want to constantly remind him of his relative short stature. Instinctively she knows that doing so will lead to tensions of many sorts. Most women will say, "It just doesn't feel right!" to be taller than her partner.

Of course there are some women who never stop wearing heels when dating or when eventually they marry shorter men. They will not tolerate such social posturing and are thus very confident and alpha females (e.g. Carla Bruni) - but to make such a relationship last (a relative term to be sure when it comes to dating or marriage) they must be with a very confident man (e.g. Nicolas Sarkozy).

However when a woman who had initially adopted a "no heels" or short heels habit - converts back to wearing heels (with the exception of some professional settings), this is a warning sign that she no longer prioritizes their height disparity and thus indicates a drop of empathy towards her partner and signals an emotional rift, falling out of love or perhaps even infidelity (e.g., she wants to appear attractive to other potential or actual partners). Empathy is directly correlated with love and relationship longevity.

Moreover the Polish Anthropologist, Boguslaw Pawlowski, Ph.D., has noticed a very interesting predictor of both attraction as well as relationship longevity - Male to Female height ratio. If the man is 9% taller than the woman (1.09 times taller - or inversely stated - if the woman is 91.7% the height of the man) - this is the optimum height for attraction and relationship longevity.

It's interesting to note that Tom Cruise (5'7" [170.2 cm]) is 2 inches (3.08 cm) shorter than his then-wife Katie Holmes (5'9" [175.25 cm]). Their male-to-female ratio was only 0.97! Conversely, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward - who were married for 50 years - had a ratio of exactly 1.09. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have a ratio of 1.085 and their marriage is going on 27 years.

Caroline Wozniacki is taller than her former fiancé - and is listed at 5'10" (177.8 cm) while Rory McIlroy is generously reported to be 5'9" (175.25 cm) - this would put their height ratio at 0.985. Yet looking at the above image, even when taking into account her heels and the fact he is closer to the camera - it seems she is taller than him by a greater margin of 1 inch - but more like 2 to 3 inches (putting this estimated ratio between 0.957 and 0.971). Of course these are only statistical correlations - and statistics do not govern the behavior of individual people, relationships, athletes, or atoms. Statistics govern large groups. So while there are many exceptions - yet these tenancies are very interesting and not to be ignored.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3054: Rory McIlroy laughs off "Sweet Caroline" tune (But Not Memories of Wozniacki) - Blushing, Smiling, Sincerity and Empathy (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Rory McIlroy recently spoke to a sideline reporter during the half-time interval at the Ulster vs. Connacht Rugby match on Boxing Day.

After Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" began playing over the public address system and the crowd enthusiastically joined in, we see the current World No. 1 Ranked Golfer display several sincere smiles as well as sincere laughter (although sometimes somewhat suppressed). He also looks down and blushes.

Blushing cannot be produced deliberately - it's entirely involuntary.

Of course in this context, Rory is somewhat embarrassed and many would say sheepish regarding the public referencing of his former fiancée and former World No. 1 Ranked Tennis Player, Caroline Wozniacki.

Blushing is always accompanied by a sincere smile (again, although sometimes these smiles are partially suppressed). Additionally, a person who blushes often and easily signals an overall personality that's sincere. People who blush easier also tend to have higher empathy quotients.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2827: Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy - She was the Alpha, He was the Beta (PHOTO)

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wosniacki have provided a lot of nonverbal displays in the last several days - and this image is yet another fantastic example.

This photo was taken in London about a week before their break up. Note Wosniacki's feet are planted entirely on the ground. Notice also her knees and feet - and their distance apart. This is consistent with high confidence and an alpha dominance. Both McIlroy's feet and knees are quite close together - and his heels and mid-feet are also off the ground. This is highly indicative of a role-reversing display of low confidence and beta-submissiveness.

A similar configuration can be seen with each of their upper arm's as distanced from their torso's - McIlroy's are much closer while Wozniacki's are considerably further away and forward - again displaying an absolute and relative alpha over her then fiancé's beta emotional tone.

Rory is looking at his phone and probably reading a text; so his relatively beta (almost feminine) body language may have nothing at all to do with the couple's impending break up. However - when viewed in the context of the previous two posts (Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2825: Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki break off their Engagement - Body Language Tells and Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2826: Caroline Wozniacki & Rory McIlroy Call Off Their Engagement - Body Language and Dominance) - this nonverbal cluster is highly suggestive of McIlroy's submissiveness and Wosniacki's dominant role in the decision making with regards to the couple's very recent break-up.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2826: Caroline Wozniacki & Rory McIlroy Call Off Their Engagement - Body Language and Dominance (PHOTO)

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy called off their engagement yesterday.

This image was taken one week ago in London. From a body language perspective it is notable because it shows a switch in dominance. Ms. Wozniacki's hand is on top in the dominant position - which of course leaves Mr. McIlroy's on the bottom (submissive and demure).

This hand-holding configuration is the opposite from the vast majority (96%) of male-female relationships - as well as numerous previous examples of Wozniacki and McIlroy. Thus the timing of Caroline's recent and new-found alpha emotional mindset strongly implies that she was the decision-maker in the couples break-up.

Temporary shifts (e.g. female alpha - male beta) in such hand-holding dominance signals who holds the cards regarding the subject of the latest discussion-disagreement.

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki broke off their engagement today. In the above video McIlroy says it is mutual. Based on the golfer's body language - what do you think? What follows below is a partial analysis of a video that's loaded with nonverbal signals.

At the 0:23 mark, McIlroy displays a quite significant anger tell with a prominent and very visible jaw jut after he says " ... we both thought it was for the best of us -you know - the best for both of us ..."

This mouth cover & near nose rub is significant for deception at the 0:39 mark as Rory (contrary to his declarative statement) absolutely does NOT think his form has been well.

While to some this nonverbal may resemble the first image above - it is a completely different emotion. This near-microexpression of regret appears at 0:45 just after he says he wants to "... I just want to, you know, dive straight into it ...."

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2663: Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy Engaged - A Body Language Sign of Affection (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy have just announced their engagement via Wozniacki' twitter account (New Year's Eve 2013).

Wozniacki and McIlroy are both former World No. 1 ranked athletes in tennis and golf respectively.

Why it's possible to have love without (or with minimal) affection, when affection is felt and displayed - love is also present (though of course it's not always romantic love). 

... And within the context of romantic relationships - when affection is waning, it's a warning signal that love many be very well also be diminishing.

In all three of these images both Wozniacki's and McIlroy's head & neck are leaning towards each other - displaying certain affection.

Body Language signals of affection are often poorly understood and unfortunately often confused with and "lumped-in" with sexuality and sexual displays. This is particularly true when it comes to dating, romantic and/or marital scenarios.  And while affection can and should exist during sex - affection (and therefore affectionate displays) can and should "stand on their own" for romantic love to be healthy and project longevity.

Sincerity Secret # 20: Fiero Feels Good, Caroline Wozniacki & Our Mirror Neurons

This is Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. Caroline is current ranked number one in the World by the WTA. Here she is experiencing Fiero after victory.  Fiero is a specific and intense emotion of accomplishment after overcoming a great obstacle. It is certainly not limited to athletic events, but these are commonly photographed. It can also result from overcoming emotional, financial, family, or business obstacles. There is no equivalent word for this in English. Fiero is a term coined by Italian psychologist Isabella Poggi.

The facial expressions and body posture of fiero are interestingly similar to those of extreme pain. Note Caroline's eyes are closed tightly, and her mouth is open wide. If the picture were wider in angle - you would see her fists clenched and if it had audio, you would hear the tennis star screaming. Yet when we see this picture, even though at this writing, her winning this match is about three week old, we not only easily make the distinction that she is experiencing extreme fiero - but we feel it too. 

The fact that we truly feel a bit of  Ms. Wozniacki's fiero, or that of any winning athlete, or we cry during a sad movie, or feel pain when we witness another being injured - are all indirect evidence for the existence of our "Mirror Neurons".

Mirror neurons are a new class of neurons first discovered in monkeys about 20 years ago and have since been found in birds, dogs and humans.  Many experts feel that defects in these neurons play a key role in the development of autism, sociopathic and psychopathic behavior, and perhaps such defects are at the root of much criminal behavior. The same experts feel that healthy mirror neurons also enable us to learn. A better name for mirror neurons may be "empathy neurons".
