Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2625: Paul Walker of 'Fast & Furious' and Body Language of the Tongue Jut (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Paul Walker, actor and star of the "Fast & Furious" movies died in a car crash today. He was a passenger in a single vehicle accident in Southern California. The red Porsche Carrera GT, driven by his friend, Roger Rodas, struck a tree and light pole in Valencia, Santa Clarita, California. Both men died at the scene. Walker was returning from a charity event to benefit the victims of the recent Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines as part of an organization he founded, "Reach Out Worldwide".

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Paul Walker was loved by friends, other actors and fans. One reason for likability was his high sincerity quotient. A little appreciated nonverbal signal of high sincerity can be seen at the beginning of the above video when Walker recently appeared on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". Note at 0:24, just before he sits down, a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") can be seen. When clustered with specific other nonverbal signals, a tongue jut signifies excitement or self-deprecating humor.

Although not the case here a tongue jut can indicate "I've been bad", "I just got caught", "I've done something foolish" or "I just got away with something". Do you know how to tell these tongue juts apart?

Rest in peace Paul Walker. You will be missed.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2624: Michigan's Football Coach Brady Hoke's Body Language .... (PHOTO)

University of Michigan Football Coach Brady Hoke has a reason to be upset. The Wolverines lost a squeaker today against arch rival Ohio State 42-41. Some may question his decision to go for a two point conversion with seconds left in regulation. Brady is but one of these ....

Even without the benefit of viewing his eyes in this image, an expression of subtle - yet significant disgust can be seen on his face. Most can properly identify extreme levels of emotion, however many an otherwise socially adept person misidentifies moderate, let alone subtle body language.

What are the nonverbal clues seen here which signal subtle disgust?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2623: Kim Jong-un Impersonator - A Valuable Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

An Australian musician, who goes by "Howard" (and as yet has not disclosed a last name) recently created a buzz in Hong Kong, where he is dressed and was made-up in detail as Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea. Perhaps a good PR stunt, at least initially, Howard has made a bit of a name for himself.

In the brief interview included in the above video, Howard displays a valuable body language tell. Although we cannot see his feet, during the 0:23 - 0:24 segment, the impersonator goes "Up on his Toes" as he says, "... get dressed up and do some gigs with it ..." (Do not confuse this with the just preceding shoulder-shrugging). Although on some occasions this nonverbal signal can indicate an alpha emotional tone, in this case of the "Kimpersonator" and most other times, it signals excitement. It is one way the human body "bleeds out" excessive energy associated with these pleasant, high-energy (and high-adrenaline) states.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2622: Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, What Faces Reveal - Body Language in Foxborough (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In Foxborough last Sunday, Tom Brady's Patriots beat Peyton Manning's Broncos 34-31 in overtime. One of the highest rated rivalries in American sports, Brady leads in their head-to-head match ups, winning in ten of fourteen meetings.

This image (left) was captured after the October 12, 2012 game where New England also beat Denver (31-21).

In this moment (above), Manning's facial expression, particularly his mouth and mid-face, is classic for the common combined nonverbal of both Regret (the primary emotion) and Anger (secondary emotion). Some refer to this combination as Bitterness

In this second image taken after an earlier victory over Manning's then Indianapolis Colts, Brady displays his relative alpha status with his hand & arm turned about 45 degrees so that it is in the dominant, top position (look at their forearms as well). Peyton acquiesces his hand position while accepting the more beta configuration.  Had Manning won the game, Brady's hand would have been in the weaker position.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2621: Matt Smith (11th Incarnation of 'Dr. Who'), Anxiety and American Psycho (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Matt Smith and David Tennant were recently guests on The Graham Norton Show in Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of 'Dr. Who'. The following is the dialog from 1:50 to 2:04 of the video above.

Norton: "Is it the thing about the Musical, of 'American Psycho'. Is that true?"

Smith: "Yea, I'm - rehearsing it now."

Norton: "Oh, so it's that soon?"

Smith: "Yea, yea, God, we're going to tech next week. I've got lots of questions actually for you Robbie about singing." (to Robbie Williams)

Williams: "Right ah, I'm not the best for that."

During the entire segment from 1:57 to 2:02, Smith scratches behind his right ear (specifically on the posterior base of his right mastoid process). He does this 17 times (see below). Scratching of this area is consistent with honest anxiety. Smith is clearly quite stressed about his singing in 'Psycho'.

Do not confuse this with "The Ear Screw", "The Ear Tug" - or scratching just below or in front of the ear. These other facial nonverbal MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) often have less straightforward meanings depending on the other body language signals with which they are clustered. Do you know what these body language signs can indicate?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2620: President Obama Tells a Couple Fibs - "Norming" Barack's Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday 26 November, President Obama visited Dreamworks Entertainment in Glendale, California - and he did not want to be there. His body language betrayed him. At the 0:03 mark in the above video, just as he says, "... Animation ...", within the sentence, " ... It is great to be at Dreamworks Animation ...", Barack Obama rubs the bottom of his nose with a simultaneous mouth covering. In the context of a declarative statement this nonverbal signal is highly indicative of a lie.

In this second image below, captured at 0:28 just as POTUS says "... between ..." within the sentence, "... ah, but, but, there's a natural connection, between me and Dreamworks Animation. I don't know if you know this but ah, my ears were one of the inspirations for 'Shrek' ...", he commits a virtually identical MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier).

These seemingly trivial two lies provide a great lesson in "norming" body language behavior.

No one doubts the second lie in particular is an attempt at self-deprecating humor and of course everyone knows he is lying. The audience is "in on it". There is no consequence in "getting caught" - and yet there is still this classic nose rub/mouth cover display.

Barack Obama is not very good at pulling off deception without also giving nonverbal cues - indeed very few people can avoid "leaking" such signals.

The chances of pulling off a lie are highly proportional to the ramifications of getting caught. Thus if committing even small deceptions causes such displays - bigger lies will lead to more overt body language tells. This is valuable information to build upon when "norming" behavior during typical times so that one can better detect deceit during other times.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2619: Following Jacqueline Kennedy's Lead - 50 Years ago - Body Language in JFK's Funeral Procession (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Fifty years ago today President John F. Kennedy was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

On that day Jacqueline Kennedy temporarily transformed the behavior of many World leaders who were more than apprehensive about walking in the funeral procession. Jackie knew this and her body language played a significant role in her changing their actions.

Mrs. Kennedy let it be known that she would lead the procession.

By leading, the young widow evoked tremendous empathy, dignity and courage in others. The heads-of-state from numerous countries followed in her footsteps. This historical scenario provides an excellent example of how their empathy for Jackie and her symbol to them - caused these leaders to follow and thus mirroring her nonverbal behavior.

The one leading most powerfully - was the one who was not elected.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2618: Learning of Kennedy Assassination - Body Language of Sudden Facial Touching (PHOTOS)

A very valuable skill when accessing a person's personality is developing an ability to gauge their empathy level. One way to to qualify and quantify this is using objective nonverbal methods. Those who lack empathy are not healthy to be friends with, baby sit your child, teach your child, hire, work for, date, marry, pick for a jury, etc.

Although there are other emotions intermixed, one key characteristic (can you name any others?) of those who rapidly touch their face upon hearing dramatic news have high empathy quotients. Mouth covering is the most common variety - although other examples are shown here.

A form of a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier), rapid face touching is accompanied a variety of emotions - e.g. sadness, shock, fear, happiness, etc.

All four of these images where captured an instant after these subjects learned of President John Kennedy's assassination.

This quality of caring is also known as high "Empathy Quotients".

It also signals a dissonance between the logical brain and the emotional brain. Thus people are processing the sudden difference - their psyches are trying to "catch up".

Based on her body language, what additional emotions (besides empathy) is this woman feeling-thinking upon hearing of JFK's death?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2617: Walter Cronkite Announces President John Kennedy's Death - Body Language and Suppression of Grief (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

"From Dallas, Texas, the flash, apparently official, President Kennedy died at One P.M. Central Standard Time; Two O'clock Eastern Standard Time; some thirty eight minutes ago ...[tongue-in-cheek at 0:19 mark and imaged below] ... Vice President [voice crack] Johnson [cough] has left the hospital in ah Dallas, but we do not know ah, to where he has proceeded - ah presumably he will be taking the oath of office shortly and become ah, the thirty-sixth President of the United States."

The "Tongue-in-Cheek" facial expression (in the above video at 1:31 and captured in the image below) has several possible meanings depending on the other nonverbal signals with which it is clustered (can you name them all?). In this most famous news clip wherein Walter Cronkite announces President John Kennedy's death, we see an example of this body language being used to suppress grief. Moreover Cronkite's cracking voice along with his cough to clear his throat, example paralanguage congruencies with this emotion.

What other body language does Mr. Cronkite display which is also signaling the suppressing of sadness and curtailing tears?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2616: John Kennedy and Richard Nixon Handshake at Kennedy Inaugural Address, One Body Language Maneuver to Counter a Dominance Display (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today marks the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Just as notably, it has been almost 53 years since his inauguration. The video above shows his inaugural address as well as his swearing-in by then Chief Justice Earl Warren (later of the Warren Commission).

At the beginning of the video, just after Kennedy takes his Oath of Office, he shakes Chief Warren's hand, then Lyndon Johnson's - and then Richard Nixon's. What follows is a short-lived but significant alpha display by Nixon with Kennedy re-asserting his dominance. JFK examples here (0:45 - 0:49) one method by which the "double-hander" can be countered.

Initially, Kennedy should have first turned his body more completely before reaching for Nixon's hand.

Nixon immediately uses both hands to rapidly configure in the "Politician's Double-Hander". Unfortunately this variety of handshake is ingrained in most politicians' body language repertoire. It sends signals of dominance - (or attempts at dominance) and is very negatively received by most people.

Kennedy begins to turn in order to fully face Nixon.

Kennedy continues to turn

Kennedy is now nearly fully "squared" to Nixon, with his face, torso, hips (and feet - very important though not visible here) towards Nixon.

Kennedy's left hand begins to reach up to grasp Nixon's right arm.

Nixon continues his double-hander.

Kennedy is now asserting counter-dominance over the man he had just defeated in the 1960 election by gripping the former V.P.'s right arm.

Nixon pulls away his left hand - far away (over-compensating much as an over-steering event while driving) leaving him with significantly less alpha. Kennedy now has the dominance advantage while continuing to grasp Nixon's right arm.

Both men now disengage their handshake, however Kennedy continues to assert his Presidential dominance by still holding Nixon's right elbow - and in effect "getting the last word".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis - Quiz No. 2615: Bill Clinton Receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom - And His Body Language Reveals What Emotions? (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Yesterday Bill Clinton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom along with 15 others. This award, along with the Congressional Gold Medal, is the highest that can be bestowed upon a American civilian. It was established 50 years ago by President John F. Kennedy.

The others recipients this year included Oprah Winfrey, Ernie Banks, Loretta Lynn, Ben Bradlee, Daniel Kahneman, Richard Lugar, Mario Molina, Bayard Rustin (posthumous), Daniel Inouye (posthumous), Arturo Sandoval, Dean Smith, Gloria Steinem, Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian, Patricia Wald and Sally Ride (posthumous).

At the very moment when President Obama hung the Medal of Freedom around President Clinton's neck - what does Bill's protruding Jaw tell you about his emotions?

The body language of thinned lips, a tense "mustache area" and a foreshortened mouth are very telling. What do these indicate?

What of Mr. Clinton's chin dimpling?

Do you note any significant nostril flaring?

Bill's jaw is also clenched. With what emotion(s) is this nonverbal sign consistent?

In the context of the other body language signals, what is the significance of the direction of President Clinton's gaze?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2614: Harry Reid on Military Sexual Assault - Supporting Gillibrand over McCaskill - What Is He Really Thinking? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

At the beginning of this video, Senator Harry Reid is asked "... and also where are you personally on the Gillibrand sexual assault amendment?"

At the 0:07 mark just prior to Senator Reid answering this question, he looks down and with his mouth displays two successive microexpressions of regret. This nonverbal signal is very brief, difficult to see and not best demonstrated from this view, yet so oft is the real world - it won't pose for you or present itself at optimal angles (must see video to view its dynamic nature).

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's version of a bill remodeling of just how the military justice system will deal with and attempt to reduce sexual assault is pitted against Senator Claire McCaskill's proposal.

Harry Reid is feeling significant emotional dissonance in his supporting of Gillibrand over McCaskill. All three are democrats and colleagues.

What other body language signals are present which indicate Reid is not fully emotionally committed to Gillibrand's approach?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2612: Chris Christie 'Calls a Spade a Spade' (Well … Almost) - Body Language of the 2016 Republican Presidential Hopeful (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Monday 18 November at the CEO Council in Washington D.C., Chris Christie was asked about the public's perceived coziness of the Governor and Barack Obama after Hurricane Sandy last November. The following is a portion of his response and some of the body language analysis.

At 26:01 the newly re-elected New Jersey politician continues, "...I mean it's ridiculous. You know the fact is - I speak candidly about everyone. And when the President does something worth praising, I will praise him; and when he does something worth damning, I'll damn him. But I'm not going to make that decision based on my party; I'm going to make that decision based on the facts. And so, I think most republicans ..."

During 26:20 - 26:22 as he says, "... And so ..." he displays a facial rub in the region between his right eye and nose. When committing this nonverbal (do you know the others?) when making a declarative statement ("... But I'm not going to make that decision based on my party; I'm going to make that decision based on the facts ...") - it is highly correlative with deception.

Thus while this 2016 Republican Presidential hopeful (yes he has nonverbally declared himself to be a candidate) speaks truth to power more than most, he is still a politician and makes some of his decisions based on how the electorate will view him.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2611: George Zimmerman Arrested Again - The Body Language of His Mug Shot (VIDEO, PHOTO)

George Zimmerman was arrested again today. He was charged with felony aggravated assault - for allegedly pointing a shotgun in the face of his girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe. He was also charged with criminal mischief as well as domestic violence battery - both misdemeanors and in association with the same event.

Zimmerman's primary emotion being felt at the moment of today's mug shot is Anger. His Jaw is clenched and slightly forward in what is termed a "Jaw Jut". His nostrils are also mildly flared and his lower eyelids are mildly tensed. This nonverbal cluster is highly consistent with Anger.

Note also that Zimmerman's lips are thinned, foreshortened and mildly pursed. The tightening component is indicative of anger. The pursing portion however tells that George Zimmerman has clandestine disagreement. He is holding back at least some information in this moment. He also believes he has a relative alpha status and he also believes that he will be found innocent. This may sound ironic to some, but he has of course in the recent past been acquitted of murder of teenager Trayvon Martin and gained international notoriety in the process.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2610: Nancy Pelosi Body Language Tells Us She Fears for Obamacare's Demise (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this brief press interview, U.S. House Minority Leader, NancyPelosi displays multiple expressions of fear. In the first example below, this nonverbal occurs just as she is being asked, "How concerned are you that the Affordable Care Act might be in trouble?".

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the video has since been deleted from its internet source.

Note the configuration of her mouth in the wide display of her bottom teeth in this image (a mild "Mouth of Fear"). In addition, her momentarily tensed "Neck of Fear" adds to this body language cluster (at 0:01).

In this second image captured a few seconds later at 0:40, Ms. Pelosi's fear face is increased with a slightly but significant greater downward vectoring of the corners of her mouth, increased neck muscle tension and her eyes are opened slightly wider.

What other specific differences are there between the nonverbal displays in these two moments?
