Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3305: Weatherman Liam Dutton nails pronouncing Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

How many people can pronounce "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" properly? .... And how could you tell if they got it wrong?

In this recently viral video, Meteorologist Liam Dutton nails a most difficult pronunciation of a Welsh village - and to the observant among us - we can also see an interesting and valuable body language display.

Just as the weatherman says the last syllable of the lengthy town, you can see Mr. Dutton elevate subtly (0:14 second mark) and once again with greater height during 0:15 (as he says, " ... temperature got to 21 Celsius ..."). Although we can't see them directly, we know he's elevating up on his toes. This nonverbal display is often seen during times of anxiety - yet most of the time this is of a positive variety, e.g. with excitement, pride, joy, optimism, etc. Dutton is very pleased with himself that he pulled this off - and of course he doesn't say so with words - yet his body language tells us he's proud.

This act of this toe elevation is subconsciously initiated and is one example of an "energy bleeder" which helps to dampen the expression of other nonverbal signals which he may not want to display.

What other subtle nonverbal tells us Liam Dutton is happy with his performance?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2838: Robert De Niro, Graham Norton and Acting Advice - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Robert De Niro was on The Graham Norton Show a few months ago. When he's on screen, the Academy Award winning actor suspends our disbelief - a' la Stanislavsky. However when he's back in his own skin - he exhibits as many body language tells as the rest of us.

Graham Norton asks De Niro about pearls of wisdom he gives to young actors. In the above video during the 0:44 - 0:45 segment (see image below), just after he jokingly tells Graham Norton that he would recommend Norton not return to acting, we see Mr. De Niro display a "Tongue Jut". In this setting a tongue jut indicates an emotion of "I've been bad". When it is clustered with other nonverbals it can be a signal of a self-deprecating mindset or extreme excitement.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2690: Peyton Manning Explains the Meaning of "Omaha" Call - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although other quarterbacks have used it before, including Tom Brady and his little bro' Eli, Peyton Manning has made the call "Omaha" somewhat famous in the last few weeks. After earning his third career Super Bowl appearance and his first in a Denver Broncos uniform, many people want to know what it means. He's probably been asked this many times, so the answer he gives above is not his first. Peyton's pretty good in front of the camera, yet he gives away several key body language tells. One is briefly discussed here.

At the 0:33 second mark, near the end of the video, Manning displays a nonverbal known as a "Tongue Jut" or "Lizard Tongue". This is very evanescent and is but one example of a microexpression. It has several different meanings depending on the other body language signals with which it is clustered. These include: "I've been bad", "I just got caught", "I've done a foolish thing" or "I got away with something". It can also indicate self-deprecation or excitement.

Can you discern which of these meanings Peyton's body language is conveying here? Would you have seen this tell or paid it attention had it not been pointed out? What other nonverbals did you spot?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2625: Paul Walker of 'Fast & Furious' and Body Language of the Tongue Jut (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Paul Walker, actor and star of the "Fast & Furious" movies died in a car crash today. He was a passenger in a single vehicle accident in Southern California. The red Porsche Carrera GT, driven by his friend, Roger Rodas, struck a tree and light pole in Valencia, Santa Clarita, California. Both men died at the scene. Walker was returning from a charity event to benefit the victims of the recent Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines as part of an organization he founded, "Reach Out Worldwide".

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Paul Walker was loved by friends, other actors and fans. One reason for likability was his high sincerity quotient. A little appreciated nonverbal signal of high sincerity can be seen at the beginning of the above video when Walker recently appeared on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". Note at 0:24, just before he sits down, a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") can be seen. When clustered with specific other nonverbal signals, a tongue jut signifies excitement or self-deprecating humor.

Although not the case here a tongue jut can indicate "I've been bad", "I just got caught", "I've done something foolish" or "I just got away with something". Do you know how to tell these tongue juts apart?

Rest in peace Paul Walker. You will be missed.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2136:
Some Body Language Highlights from
First Obama - Romney Presidential Debate in Denver

This is but one of many highlights clips of the first of three Presidential Debates of this election year. There are some interesting nonverbal tells in this video - and here are a few:

It's a well-documented characteristic of any Presidential debate that the blink rate of the participants increases significantly. A Crescendo in the rate of blinking indicates a heightened level of anxiety - and/or deception. It is certainly understandable to be anxious during any debate - particularly a presidential one. At various times during this video we can see both candidates blink rate are dramatically increased. It's important to compare blinking during these (or any suspected) times to the blink rate earlier and later in the conversation - and even (in the same person) to different settings on different days. If the blink rate is indeed increased, there is a solid reason to suspect increased anxiety or worse.

At the end of the debate, each of the candidates give their closing statements - in part captured here during  2:58 - 3:24 Note how Mitt Romney repeatedly elevates up on his toes - even through his feet or lower any part of his lower extremities are not visible here, we can see his shoulders jutting up repeatedly. Mitt's adrenaline is flowing and he's elated regarding his performance and it's manifesting as if he's a little boy before Christmas. This spontaneous "up on toes" maneuver is a subconscious display of excitement.

Mitt Romney is showing us his self-critique - and he thinks he hit a home run.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Secret # 1482:
George Clooney's Lizard Tongue (Tongue Jut)

George Clooney gives us a great example here of a "Lizard Tongue". Some may also refer to this a "Snake Tongue or a "Tongue Jut". Depending on the other body language it is clustered with, this nonverbal may indicate: "I've been bad", "I've got caught", "I got away with something", excitement or "I did a foolish thing"(Navarro). It can also indicate self-deprecating humor or excitement depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered. Although Clooney uses it here with a sincere smile - it is often much less obvious in business and other settings. The lizard tongue is a common tell when there is surreptitious activity afoot or during negotiations.

Nonverbal Communication Secret # 48:
A Lizard Tongue gives us a Great Glimpse into
Katie Holmes' Psyche

This is Actress Katie Holmes exhibiting a great example of a "Lizard Tongue". Depending on its context and other body language signals seen with it, a tongue-jut can have several meanings: I got caught, I've been bad, I got away with something, excitement or I did something silly (Navarro). It can also indicate self-deprecating humor depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered. The Lizard Tongue is not to be confused with the "Tongue in Cheek" nonverbal, wherein the tongue is pushed to one side, against the inside of the cheek, and is often not visible. When you see the tongue-jut - take note as it is often seen with a "serious face" and in business or other formal settings.
