Body Language Analysis No. 4378: William Barr questioned regarding The Mueller Report (on 9 April 2019 before the House) - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, 9 April 2019, Attorney General William Barr testified before the US House Appropriations subcommittee. The hearing was intended to address the Justice Department budget.  Democrats, however, took the opportunity to ask questions regarding other topics - including special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election. What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of a portion of AG Barr's questioning by Congresswoman Nita Lowey.

NITA LOWEY (beginning at 7:13): Did the White House see The Report, before you released your summarizing letter? Has the White House seen it since then? Have they been briefed on the contents beyond what was in your summarizing letter - to the, Judiciary Committee?

WILLIAM BARR (beginning at 7:30): Um, I've said what I'm going to say about The Report today. Ah, I've s- 've[stutter] issued three letters about it - annnd [sic] I'm - I was willing to discuss - ahhh the historic information of how Thee [sic] [pause] Report came to me and my decision on Sunday - buuut, I've already laid out the process that is going forward, ah, to release these reports, ah, hopefully ah within a week - and I'm not going to say anything more about it until the report is out and everyone has a chance to look at it.

As soon as Representative Lowey says, "White House" ("Did the White House see The Report" ...), Attorney General Barr Displays an Inward Lip Roll (7:13 - 7:17). An inward lip roll is the psyche's attempt to suppress both the inner crescendo of strong emotions as well as their corresponding facial expressions.

In this context, an extended blink and/or increase of blinking frequency, while not required as part of an inward lip roll (ILR), acts as a nonverbal amplifier.

Note that Barr's forehead muscles are also contracting (across the entire width) and elevating. This is in the opposite direction of his eyelids during a blink (downward). These adjacent tissues moving in opposite directions are yet a further signal of blocking behavior - a manifestation of psychological push-back.

Just after Rep. Lowey says, "Has the White House seen it" (and as she is saying, "since then?"), AG Barr's jaw (mandible) moves to his right (7:20 - 7:21). This is what is known as a Jaw Confessional.

A Jaw Confessional is a nonverbal signal characterized by a quick and short-duration sideways (lateral) movement of the jaw. It indicates shame, regret, embarrassment. However, it's of profound importance here that these emotions are NOT expressed verbally.

Please view the video, as this dynamic is somewhat subtle and not captured well in a single image.

During 7:30, just before he begins speaking (just prior to him saying, "Um, I've said what I'm going to say about The Report today"), Bill Barr displays what is known as a Loose Tongue Jut (Not to be confused with a Tight Tongue Jut or a Wide Open Tongue Jut). A loose tongue jut indicates the though-emotions of:

• I've been bad
• I got caught
• I've just done a stupid thing

This next expression (immediately above), which Barr makes just prior to saying, "issued three letters about it" (7:36) is one of Feigned Consideration and is NEVER made by a person who's in a state of a beta mindset, rather only by individuals who are feeling superior to the others around them. It indicates a classic alpha emotional tone and a not-so-subtle arrogance.

During 7:58, as he says, "not going" ("I'm not going to say anything more about it until the report is out"), Barr displays a Microexpression of Contempt combined with a partial smile of Schadenfreude. Barr is taking true joy-happiness in snubbing Congresswoman Lowery.

Just after he says, "everyone has a chance to look at it", AG Barr displays this expression (during 8:03). This facial configuration is indicative of Disgust combined with Impatience.

From a Statement Analysis standpoint, what's most obvious in this exchange is that AG Barr didn't answer any of Congresswoman Lowey's questions. He stonewalled her.

Barr's use of the word, "hopefully" - is noncommittal and indicates a verbal nonchalance/dominance display. 

Also, take note of Barr's pronouncing the word "the" as "thee" - with a "long e" (ē) - "Thee [pause] Report". This verbal pattern is a subconscious/edge-of-consciousness stalling tactic which is associated with deception and inflated/false importance.

Note also, Barr's use of the phrase "going forward". This word combination is used by those who perceive themselves to be alpha relative to whom they're speaking - and who are also pursuing their agenda. It's a strong signal that the speaker is trying to appear as if they're being objective - yet they're being highly subjective.


SUMMARY: Attorney General Barr's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior during this exchange with Congresswoman Nita Lowey indicates, with extremely high probability, that President Trump has seen the Muller Report in full.

Moreover, William Barr is taking pleasure (Schadenfreude) in his stonewalling - by not releasing Robert Mueller's Report. In addition, he displays contempt, impatience, and disgust toward Congresswoman Lowey. He believes he is highly alpha to her beta.

Body Language Analysis No. 4187: Donald Trump Responds to Questions Regarding His Order to Fire Robert Mueller - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, an exchange occurred between President Trump and the Press regarding his order to fire Special Prosecutor, Robert Mueller in June of 2017. What follows is their dialog and a partial nonverbal analysis of the President.

JOURNALIST: Mr. President, did you order Mueller fired?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Ω Thank you everybody. Thank you. 

JOURNALIST: Mr. President, did you seek to fire Mueller? 

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Thank you. Fake news, folks. Fake News.

JOURNALIST: What's your message today?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Typical New York Times - fake stories. 

JOURNALIST: Mr. Trump?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Message is peace and prosperity - that's what we have. We have a tremendous crowd - and - a crowd like they've never had before. Klaus actually told me. It's a crowd like they have never had before at Davos - including all of you people like they've never had before - so that's good. I assume they're here because of Klaus.

KLAUS SCHWAB: No [inaudible]

JOURNALIST: How - Do you think your message will be well-received?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: I think it's going to be very well received - it's a very positive message, ahhh - The United States is doing fantastically well. Better than we've done in - decades. The stock markets are incredible. Businesses are coming back into the United States. I think it's going to be great message that people are going to like hearing. 'Kay? Thank you.

JOURNALIST: Did you try and f, ah, fire - Robert Mueller?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Thank you. Fake news.

During 0:03, just after the journalist says, "Mr. President, did you order Mueller fired?", the president displays two simultaneous nonverbal signals captured in the image above (notated by Ω ):

• Loose Tongue Jut: A loose tongue jut is indicative of the thought emotions of: "I've been bad", "I've done a stupid thing", and "I've been caught" (Navarro).

Take care to not confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning.

• Tight Lip Display: Note Donald Trump's upper lip momentarily pulls tightly while enveloping his upper teeth. This is a signal of a hesitancy to disclose information as well as thoughts and feelings which are kept clandestine.

Please watch each of these at regular speed and then at 1/2 speed as the still images don't fully capture the dynamics of this nonverbal cluster display.

During 0:09, as Donald Trump says, "Thank you. Fake news, folks. Fake News" - the President displays another crucial nonverbal signal - that of classic disgust.

Moreover, the gesture of placing his hand, vertically, palm-out, up to his face - in this context is a hyperbolic/melodramatic, sarcastic, pseudo-secretive gesture. If he truly believed this news was false - then this is one illustrator he absolutely should NOT have used. In this setting, it affirms deception.

Summary: Based on Donald Trump's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior in this exchange, he did indeed give the order to fire Robert Mueller in June of 2017.

Body Language Analysis No. 4148: Kayla and Roy Moore's Antisemitism - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier tonight, Doug Jones won Alabama's special election for the United States Senate. At the time of this posting, Roy Moore is unwilling to concede.  

On Monday 11 December 2017, during a campaign event in Midland City, Alabama - Kayla Moore made the following antisemitic statement:  

KAYLA MOORE:  Fake news would tell you that we don’t care for Jews § Ω I tell you all this because I’ve seen it all, so I just want to set the record straight while they’re here [long pause] § One of our attorneys is a Jew [long pause] § ∆ We have very close friends that are Jewish and rabbis, and we also fellowship with them.

Several days ago, Roy Moore was criticized for implying that George Soros, who is Jewish, would go to hell, saying, "He's still going to the same place that people who don't recognize God and morality and accept his salvation are going".

During 0:05 in the above video, just after saying, "Fake news would tell you that we don’t care for Jews", Kayla Moore displayed a "Tight Tongue Jut" (signified above by § symbol), (not to be confused with a "Loose Tongue Jut"). A tight tongue jut indicates Kayla Moore is feeling Repulsed, Disgusted, and Disdainful.

A split second later (still during 0:05, noted with the Ω symbol), she segues rapidly to an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). An inward lip roll tells us that she's trying to suppress strong emotions from building up - and trying not to let these feelings show.

Kayla Moore displays more disdain, disgust, and repulsion with another Tight Tongue Jut during 0:18, just before she says, "One of our attorneys is a Jew".

Roy Moore displays his own Tight Tongue Jut during 0:26, just after his he hears his wife saying, "One of our attorneys is a Jew".

Notice also he's holding his arms in a modified "Fig Leaf" stance (aka Genital Guarding). This is a significantly Low Confidence and Beta configuration. With rare exceptions, no candidate running for office should ever stand in a fig leaf position - it projects feelings of weakness.

One other detail is significant throughout much of this video. Roy Moore's central forehead is contracted (CFC). Together with a partial mouth smile (a False Smile), Moore's simultaneous central forehead contraction projects Incredulity, Contempt, and Arrogance.

Summary: Roy and Kayla Moore's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior indicates they are antisemitic.

Body Language Analysis No. 4122: Jeff Sessions Testimony, Russia, Ted Lieu, and Changing Stories - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified before the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. From a nonverbal perspective, the examples here are so numerous that an entire course could be taught from this single video.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a small portion of Jeff Sessions' testimony - in an exchange with Representative Ted Lieu.

TED LIEU: (Continuing at 5:19:01): You did have communications with the Russians last year, isn't that right?

JEFF SESSIONS: Repeat that.

TED LIEU: You did have communications with the Russians last year, isn't that right? --- Just yes or no.

JEFF SESSIONS: I had a - meeting with the Russian Ambassador, yes Ω

TED LIEU: That's exactly the - opposite answer you gave, under oath, to the US Senate. So, again, either you're lying to the US Senate, or you're lying to the US House of Representatives.

JEFF SESSIONS: Well [over-talking by Lieu, Sessions, and Goodlatte]

BOB GOODLATTE: The time of the gentleman has expired. The witness can answer any further if he chooses to.

JEFF SESSIONS: Um, I won't repeat it Mr. Chairmen. But, ah, I hope the congressman knows - and I hope all of you know - that my answer to that question, "I did not meet with the Russians", was explicitly responding, ah, to the shocking suggestion, that I as a surrogate, was meeting on a continuing basis with Russian officials - and the implication was to impact the campaign in some sort of nefarious way - and all I did was meet in my office with the Ambassador which we didn't discuss anything like that § So, I just, ah, ah, wanna say I appreciate, ah, the Congressman's right. I guess he can say - it's free speech - can't be sued - here - um - so, ah - I just ah - my response - um - I'm sorry that, um - Ah, that's my response.

Attorney General Sessions displays several nonverbal red flags in this portion of his testimony. During 5:19:14, just after he says, "I had a - meeting with the Russian Ambassador, yes", Sessions' displays a "Tongue Jut" - more specifically, a "Loose Tongue Jut" (notated by Ω in the dialogue above).

A "Loose Tongue Jut" is significant for the thought-emotions of "I've been caught", "I've been bad", "I've done a foolish thing" (Navarro). It's important to not confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning.

A few moments later, during 5:20:01, just after AG Sessions says, "... and all I did was meet in my office with the Ambassador which we didn't discuss anything like that...", he displays another Loose Tongue Jut (notated by § in the above dialog).

During 5:19:21, just after Rep. Lieu says, "... So, again, either you're lying to the US Senate ...", AG Sessions turns his head away and fumbles in his left inside jacket pocket - but not for long.

He then shuffles through two notepads and looks away again during 5:19:22 - 5:19:25.

Both of these MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) are high anxiety signals indicative of an adrenaline surge. The fact that he looks away - is a form of diminished eye contact and in this context is highly indicative of deception.

From a statement analysis perspective (a subset of paralanguage) Jeff Sessions use of "surrogate" in this setting is also particularly telling. In using the word in this context, he's attempting to distance himself from Donald Trump's campaign - in which he already held a key role.

The Attorney General's numerous stuttering displays at the end of his statement is also a red flag - indicative of low confidence and considerable emotional discomfort.

Moreover, an apology, such as "I'm sorry" wrapped in stuttering is NOT a statement associated with someone who just recounted the facts as he recalled them.

It's also profoundly important to note that The Attorney General of The United States just issued a form of thinly veiled threat to Ted Lieu when he said, "... I appreciate, ah, the Congressman's right. I guess he can say - it's free speech - can't be sued ...". In this moment Jeff Sessions felt cornered.


Summary: Jeff Sessions' nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior in the segment of his testimony before the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee outlined here, indicates that with very high probability he was being deceptive.

Body Language Analysis No. 4109: John Kelly, Robert E. Lee, and the US Civil War - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night Chief of Staff John Kelly was a guest on Fox News. A portion of that interview is included in the MSNBC video above (Fox has not yet posted a YouTube source). Some of the White House Chief of Staff's comments regarding Robert E. Lee and the American Civil War have drawn considerable criticism. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this section of the interview.

JOHN KELLY (beginning at 0:55): Ah, I will tell ya that, that Robert E. Lee was an honorable man. [Deep inhalation] Ahhh, H, He was a man that ah, gave up, ah, gave up his - country to fight for his state which in, a hundred 'n' fifty years ago was more important that country - it was always loyalty to state first back in those days. [∑, Deep inhalation] Ah, now where it's different - today [Deep inhalation]. Ahhhh, but that, that, thee, the lack of an ability to compromise Ω ah, led to the Civil War. And, ahum, men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscious, ahum, had them make their stand...

Getting historical facts accurate is of the utmost importance (lest we rationalize what we want to be true) - but in the context of this article we're analyzing Nonverbal behavior (not history) - thus there's a profound distinction to be made: True history versus what John Kelly believes to be the true history.

Just after John Kelly says, "... it was always loyalty to state first back in those days ...", he inhales deeply and shrugs both shoulders (during 1:11 and notated by ∑ in the above transcript). In this context, his Shoulder Shrug indicates the thought-emotions of: "What could I do?", "What difference does it make?"

Please watch the video as the still image does not capture the dynamic and subtle nature of this nonverbal display.

A few seconds later (during 1:18 and notated above by Ω ) just after he says, "... Ahhhh, but that, that, thee, the lack of an ability to compromise" and just before he said, " ... ah, led to the Civil War", John Kelly displays a "Loose Tongue Jut" (not to be confused with a "Tight Tongue Jut" which has a completely different meaning). A loose tongue jut indicates the thought-emotions of: "I've just been bad", "I'm about to be bad", or "I just got/about to be caught" (Navarro). It's a body language manifestation of one's psyche scolding its owner for their own bad behavior.

Summary: John Kelly does, in fact, truly believe that Robert E. Lee was an honorable man - he's not political posturing here. However, a moment later, Chief of Staff Kelly was indeed lying when he said, "the lack of an ability to compromise, ah, led to the Civil War". He does not believe this.

Body Language Analysis No. 4108: Sarah Huckabee Sanders' White House Briefing regarding Paul Manafort and George Papadopoulos - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Donald Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort - and Rick Gates (Manafort's business partner) were indicted on multiple counts - including tax fraud and money laundering charges. Many people expected this - but what was not anticipated, was Robert Mueller's team disclosing that former Trump campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos was arrested in July. Mr. Papadopoulos has since pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI (with regards to Russian interference in the election) and he's now cooperating with investigators.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of one question and answer dynamic Sarah Huckabee Sanders exchanged with a journalist. The nonverbal displays described are coincident with the red highlighted dialog.


JOHN DECKER (beginning at 7:27): Thanks a lot Sarah. I wanted to ask about Mr. Mueller's investigation. The President, at times, has called it, 'a hoax' and he's called it 'a witch hunt' - ahum, you've used similar type of language before as it relates to - his investigation. Last week you indicated, Sarah, that you believe Mr. Mueller is wrapping-up his investigation. Ahhhh, and I've heard similar things coming from other senior administration officials. Do you still believe that Mr. Mueller is in the process of wrapping-up his investigation?

SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS: We still expect this to conclude soon. Yes. Francesca? 

During 7:30,  Ms. Huckabee Sanders displays a Tight Tongue Jut - just as Mr. Decker says, "... I wanted to ask about Mr. Mueller's investigation..."

A Tight Tongue Jut indicates a Disdain, Disgust, and Distaste for an idea, experience, thing, or person/group. It's very analogous to what occurs when we try and feed an infant a food they don't care for - and they Push It Away with their tongue. The White House Press Secretary is very much Rejecting Robert Mueller in the same manner.

Be careful not to confuse this with a "Loose Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning.

During 7:40, as John Decker continues his question, ".... you've used similar type of language before as it relates to - his investigation. Last week you indicated ...", Sarah Huckabee Sanders displays a "Hard Swallow" along with Extended (Longer Duration) Blinking.

A hard swallow is a general anxiety indicator.

A typical non-anxiety blink in a healthy person is extremely short-lived. The prolonged blinking exhibited by Ms. Huckabee Sanders is a blocking phenomenon. This is her psyche indicating she does not want to think about the investigation. In addition, in this context, in particular, it's also one form of diminished eye contact - and a behavior which is common with dishonesty and low confidence.

During 7:48, as Mr. Decker says, "... I've heard similar things coming from other senior administration officials ...", Ms. Sarah Huckabee-Sanders Pulls/Sucks her Cheeks Inward.

This dynamic of pulling/sucking the sides of the cheeks in - is indicative of HIGHER anxiety levels.

Ms. Huckabee-Sanders once again sucks her cheeks inward during 7:54 - 7:55, as Mr. Decker says, "... Do you still believe that Mr. Mueller is in the process of wrapping-up his investigation?"

Summary: Sarah Huckabee Sanders has considerable anxiety regarding Robert Mueller's investigation. Moreover, she is not being truthful when she claims that, "We still expect this to conclude soon."

Body Language Analysis No. 4078: Toddler Steals Prince Harry's Popcorn - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During an event at the Invictus Games, a toddler repeatedly helped herself to Prince Harry's popcorn. When Harry finally "caught" her - he was playful (Of course, he probably knew all along she was pinching his popcorn [longer version here]).

Like most good-natured uncles - Prince Harry interacted well with the little girl. Upon teasing her, he instinctively realized he may have gone a bit too far. A beautiful manifestation of his psyche's awareness of this infraction is seen during 0:31 - in the form of a very specific microexpression.

Here Harry displays a classic example of a "Loose Tongue Jut" (be careful not to confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning). It's also sometimes referred to as a "Lizard Tongue".

A Loose Tongue Jut signals "I've been bad", "I've been caught" (Navarro) - and, as it's exampled here, it's very often a self-deprecating act. It's our psyche calling us out - e.g., "My bad!". It's important to note that Prince Harry wasn't deliberately sticking his tongue out at the child - rather the teasing action came earlier via the popcorn. The Loose Tongue Jut dynamic is subconsciously driven.

Watch this video at regular speed - without looking at the time marker - you may very well miss it. Then when you do see it (occurring during 0:31) - note how quickly it happens. Next, view it at 1/4 speed - it's still quite evanescent.

Body Language Analysis No. 4072: "Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, while speaking at a rally in Huntsville, Alabama for Republican US Senate candidate Luther Strange - President Trump called out Colin Kaepernick without mentioning him by name. He also told NFL owners they should fire players who do not stand for the National Anthem.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a portion of Donald Trump's rally.

PRESIDENT TRUMP (beginning at 0:00): Wouldn't ya love to see one of these NFL owners - when somebody disrespects our flag - to say, "Get that son of a bitch off the field! Right now! Out! He's fired! - He's FIRED!"

During 0:26, the President displayed  a "Tight Tongue Jut" - indicating a Disdain, Disgust, and/or being Repulsed by an idea, an action, a person, a group, etc. (Don't mistake this for a "Loose Tongue Jut" which has a completely different meaning).

Less than a second later, President Trump displayed an excellent example of a "Jaw Jut". Notice also the mid-facial tension in his "mustache area". These dynamics are both rather pronounced. The President's eyebrows are also drawn together and vectored downward. Moreover, his eyelids are largely closed and tense. This nonverbal cluster is indicative of anger.

Immediately afterward (0:27) the President's Lip Pursing shows he is expressing Strong Disagreement as well as a plan (which is often partially or fully clandestine). Note how this movement is occurring simultaneously with his the splaying of his fingers.

 


During 0:39, after the crowd chants, "USA! USA! USA!", The President displays a classic "Tongue in Cheek" maneuver projecting his emotion of "I Just Won" - a nonverbal form of "Gloating".
