Body Language Analysis No. 3987: Chris Christie Denies His Day at The Beach - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Due to a political budget infighting at the state government level, New Jersey public beaches have been closed for the past three days.

Yet the beaches were not to everybody.

At a press conference on Sunday, Governor Christie was asked (beginning at 1:16 in the above video), "Governor, you look like you got some sun -"

Governor Christie answered: "No, I didn't Claude, but, ahum, go ahead. I didn't get any sun today."

As he says, "I didn't get any sun today", the Governor looks far to his right - well away from Claude (the journalist).

Eye contact very frequently either greatly diminishes during deception - or turns into a stare (unnaturally high eye contact).

When he made this statement, Chris Christie was unaware he and his family had been photographed on a public New Jersey Beach which was closed to the public.

A few seconds later (during 1:23), just before he takes a drink, Governor Christie is displaying a mixture of both contempt (primarily noted on his left midface with deepening of his left nasolabial fold, tension in his "mustache area", and flaring of his left nostril) as well as disgust disgust (his entire midface and mouth).

Taking a drink allows a person to, at least temporarily, break their existing expression (here contempt/disgust) and "reset" their game face or "lying mask".

When we cover, touch, or rub/scratch our mouths or lips when making a declarative statement - it is extremely suggestive of deception. When we have a drink in our hands (or pick one up) - it acts as a catalyst - disinhibiting the resistance to touching our face during a lie (with the cup and drink acting as a surrogate for the fingers) - therefore making this telling gesture much more likely.

Thus, if you're suspect someone may lie to you (whether you're a supervisor,  detective, parent, etc.) - always make sure they have a drink available and positioned close to their dominant hand.

Their drink is your lie detector.

The mouth and throat also become rapidly dry prior to and during a lie - making this is an additional reason for "deception quenching" (and hard swallows).

Taking a drink also stalls for a few seconds - such that one can psychologically recover from the act of lying as well as formulate a verbal answer or clever (misdirecting) follow-up statement.

Summary: Governor Chris Christie was caught in a blatant lie regarding his family's day at the beach. His press conference, a portion of which is detailed here, provides some classic body language examples of deception detection.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3623: Donald Trump's VP Pick - Mike Pence & Chris Christie - Body Language (PHOTOS)

Who will Donald Trump pick as his running mate? From a nonverbal communication perspective, this image (with Trump Shaking Indiana Governor Mike Pence's hand while Christie looks on) provides a glimpse into the Chris Christie's mind. The Governor of New Jersey is certainly not known for his poker face - and this moment is no exception.

In this close-up view of Christie, we can see his clear display of two emotions - both Disgust and Anger. Of these two, disgust is a bit more prominent (approximately 60/40). His eyebrows are pulled down and inward with tension in his (right) lower eyelid - these findings are indicative of anger. His lower face (mouth) is projecting both feelings (If you configure your own mouth similarly, you will even begin to feel these two emotions). Christie's mid-face also displays significant tells - with his "Mustache area" tightening and his nostril(s) flaring.

Take home point: Chris Christie feels both disgust and anger toward his fellow republican Governor - which indicates that he believes Pence has the inside track to Trump's VP pick.

This website serves as an objective reference source for the science and art of Body Language/Nonverbal Communication. In an effort to be both practical and academic, many examples from/of varied cultures, politicians, professional athletes, legal cases, public figures, etc., are cited in order to teach and illustrate both the interpretation of others’ body language as well as the projection of one’s own nonverbal skills in many different contexts – not to advance any political, religious or other agenda.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3233: Chris Christie formally enters the 2016 Presidential Race - What about his Body Language? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Christie made his 2016 Presidential Campaign official yesterday - giving his announcement speech at the high school from which he graduated. Many people, including the New Jersey Governor himself, have described his style as "plain-speaking" and "blunt" (e.g., "... I mean what I say and I say what I mean ..."). This is political-speak for a "working man's sincerity" in attempt to court "the common person's vote". What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of his speech.

From a body language perspective, Christie very commonly not only projects an alpha emotional tone - but is often quite hyper-alpha. His paralanguage and his verbal communication are also similarly more extreme. Of course Governor Christie may still be very sincere and plain-speaking without being hyper-alpha, overly-aggressive and out-right angry. He is confusing the two qualities of anger/assertiveness with sincerity/plain-speaking - as if they were two parts of the same whole - yet of course they're not. Chris Christie can still be blunt and sincere without getting angry.

At the 16:35 mark, Governor Christie continues, "... America is tired of hand-wringing and indecisiveness and weakness in the oval office. We need to have strength and decision-making and authority back in the oval office and that is why today I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Republican nomination for President of the United States of America! ..."

It is curious (and ironic) that in this particularly important paragraph Governor Christie uses the nonverbal metaphor of "hand-wringing". Hand-wringing in both body language and common speech conjures up images and emotions of indecisiveness, emotional dissonance and anxiety. Yet for much of this speech Chris Christie paces back and forth across the stage in what also signals similar anxiety and inner-conflict as well as the "bleeding" of nervous-energy. He is criticizing others for worrying (outwardly and inwardly) while he himself is doing that exact same thing - and telegraphing it too.

It is never good to use any body language too often. Over-doing anything will inevitably back-fire. Chris Christie should have had a wireless microphone so as to have both hands free (during this or any speech). A hand-held microphone engenders monotonous behavior with the free hand. Index finger (forefinger) pointing is cross-culturally and universally negatively received. It makes people feel berated and belittled. It destroys rapport and will cost votes (it does however make it's user feel powerful ... while it simultaneously up-regulates the users anger). The Governor moreover amplifies this negative nonverbal even further by his dramatic and repetitive use of the hand-chop - thus becoming a "finger-point hand-chop" illustrator. This is one of the worse nonverbals signals anyone can use (even in a highly-partisan, hand-picked crowd such as this setting).

Christie's courted the center-leaning voters during his last gubernatorial race - which served him well. He may be well served by a similar strategy in such a crowded republican presidential primary. However by using such anger and hyper-alpha qualities expressed in his verbal language, paralanguage and body language - will dramatically reduce his ability to win the his party's nomination.

Governor Christie - you can be both plain speaking and blunt without being angry and aggressive.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2999: Chris Christie to James Keady "Sit Down and Shut Up" - Body Language Congruent with .... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday, the two-year anniversary of Super Storm Sandy, Governor Chris Christie lost his temper during a speech with an audience member (James Keady) on the streets of Belmar, New Jersey. There were a multitude of nonverbal displays during this short video snippet of the event, yet the most telling one is discussed below.

0:55

Although Governor Christie certainly is feeling and displaying anger here (and most everyone who watches this video can see this), in this moment his primary emotion is that of contempt (which most everyone misses).

1:21

A second, stronger contempt display

Few people can accurately define contempt. Contempt occurs in a social context in which one person strongly downgrades the character/value/morality of another person or group of people. Simultaneously the person projecting contempt feels they are superior.

Governor Christie's words and vocal qualities in this scene are highly congruent with his nonverbal signals - thus in these moments he has a high sincerity quotient. His words and paralanguage are contemptuous - and so is his body language. The vast majority of the time when we speak of sincerity, we frame it in a positive emotional context - this however is an exception, for contempt is a highly negative and disruptive emotion.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2674: Did Chris Christie Orchestrate Bridge Closure or Cover Up His Subordinates Actions? Body Language Tells Us .... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

For the last day or so, the big political scandal-related question in the U.S. has been, did Governor Chris Christie orchestrate lane closures on the George Washington Bridge - or did he cover-up these actions initiated by his subordinates? The answer is No. Governor Christie neither ordered the lane closures nor is he lying or covering up for others.

Chris Christie gave a press conference this morning (video excerpt above) and although he did display some relatively small signs of anxiety (very normal for context) and other nonverbal tells (e.g., The Governor is definitely running for President in 2016), the New Jersey republican is telling the truth. There were no signs of deception in this press conference.

This analysis, as all body language evaluations should be, does not have political or other agenda. Nonverbal communication is a tool of objectivity which we all can and should use to more accurately determine the emotions, thoughts and motives of others. It is in this spirit that it is put forth.

At 2:20 just before Governor Christie says begins, "Let me conclude with this, ummm, This is not the tone I've set over the last four years in this building ..." At 2:23 (as he says the long "... ummm ..."he displays several nonverbal signals classic for anger - particularly easily seen are his thinned and horizontal lips with a foreshortened mouth opening, tension in the "mustache area" and nostril flaring. He is angry at some of his senior staff and the situation he now finds himself.

He also displays a concurrent "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" (aka SRHW) which is highly inconsistent with someone who is lying. Those who display the self-righteous head wiggle are displaying alpha qualities and very high confidence and passion regarding the subject(s) being discussed. Those with alpha personalities certainly can lie or course - however in the moment of lying, their body language will display beta qualities and other nonverbal tells as well. Liars may be passionate in their cause - but not in their ability to deceive. A liar's lack of confidence will "leak" out in their body language. Chris Christie is confident because he is telling the truth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2612: Chris Christie 'Calls a Spade a Spade' (Well … Almost) - Body Language of the 2016 Republican Presidential Hopeful (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Monday 18 November at the CEO Council in Washington D.C., Chris Christie was asked about the public's perceived coziness of the Governor and Barack Obama after Hurricane Sandy last November. The following is a portion of his response and some of the body language analysis.

At 26:01 the newly re-elected New Jersey politician continues, "...I mean it's ridiculous. You know the fact is - I speak candidly about everyone. And when the President does something worth praising, I will praise him; and when he does something worth damning, I'll damn him. But I'm not going to make that decision based on my party; I'm going to make that decision based on the facts. And so, I think most republicans ..."

During 26:20 - 26:22 as he says, "... And so ..." he displays a facial rub in the region between his right eye and nose. When committing this nonverbal (do you know the others?) when making a declarative statement ("... But I'm not going to make that decision based on my party; I'm going to make that decision based on the facts ...") - it is highly correlative with deception.

Thus while this 2016 Republican Presidential hopeful (yes he has nonverbally declared himself to be a candidate) speaks truth to power more than most, he is still a politician and makes some of his decisions based on how the electorate will view him.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2601: "Governor Christie, Are You a Tea Party Republican?" Why His Answer Tells Us Whether or Not He Will Run for President in 2016 (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this interview with Jake Tapper last week prior to his landslide re-election, Chris Christie shows us via his nonverbal signs that he will be almost certainly running for President in 2016.

At 5:31 when Tapper asks him, "Are you a tea-partier? Are you a tea party republican?"

Just after he's asked and as he answers this question, the Governor of New Jersey readjusts in his campaign bus seat (5:34 - 5:37). This classic and reliable "Squirming in his Seat" body language signals significant anxiety secondary to this tea party question.

A few moments later at beginning at the 6:15 mark, Governor Christie continues, "...Listen, I, there's a lot of principles about the Tea Party that I agree with, and have governed, um, in New Jersey in a way that's consistent with a lot of that. But, you know some of the stuff that's happened of late in Washington I think, is not even consistent with what, um, a lot of the real folks who started the Tea Party would have been, would agree with."

During the 6:20 - 6:21 segment as he says, "... and have governed, um, in New Jersey in a way that's  ..." Christie displays an across-the-chest arm scratch as his right hand reaches across to his left upper arm. We have all done this and many other similar MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) during moments of anxiety. And no doubt we experienced a "real itch". Such itching is very real and not at all imaged. A release of the neurotransmitter known as natriuretic polypeptide b (Nppb) is triggered with the onset of anxiety which in turn creates the real sensation of an itch. And an itch needs to be scratched.

Tapper then responds, "What, I don't know what you're talking about. You mean ..."

[Christie again reaches for and scratches the same shoulder as he struggles for an answer from 6:36 - 6:41] "Well I mean just the idea that that um, ah, you don't try to, well for instance like, on the sequester, we're actually succeeding as a movement in reducing government spending on the domestic side pretty significantly. But there was no, there's no acknowledgement of that by some folks in the Washington establishment. I think we should have been talking more about that. That's a real accomplishment, um, by our party to try and reduce spending that way and we,and what we should do is now is move to the entitlement side, to start to work on that side as well, then we can really look towards tax reform and other things are consistent with ss[some] a lot of folks who call themselves members of the tea party, ah want to see happen in Washington."

Chris Christie's seat squirming and cross-chested shoulder itching is indicating that he is dancing between framing himself as a far right republican (and thus putting him in a better position to win the republican Presidential nomination in 2016) and a centrist republican (so that he can win the general election). He would not be undertaking this balancing act if he were not strongly considering a bid for the Oval Office.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2591: Chris Christie on Romney's Campaign Vetting Leak, Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Christie easily won re-election as Governor of New Jersey. In a state that is traditionally democrat strong hold, Christie won strong with ~60% of the vote.

During the 2012 Presidential campaign, when Mitt Romney's team was considering Christie for the V.P. slot, key personal vetting information was leaked. This occurred just after Christie was seen to be by many as trying to be over-friendly to President Obama in the days just after Hurricane Sandy - and just prior to the election.

Watch the video above first for your assessment of the Body Language Tells. A partial analysis of this video appears below.

Jake Tapper asks Governor Christie, "... If you were to ... look ahead, I can't help but think about this new book, 'Double Down', And I don't want to get into all the details, and I know you haven't read the book, but it seems very clear that when you submitted information, confidential information to the Romney campaign when they were considering you for Vice President - somebody violated that trust and gave information to the authors of this book. There'll be time later for you to address all those issues - but I wonder what you think about that - about the fact that - you trusted these people and, and one of them clearly betrayed you?"

During the 0:13 - 0:15 segment in particular, as Tapper says, "... confidential information ...", Gov. Christie's lips thin in a highly reliable nonverbal anger display. Although he does a good job at diminishing his anger after approximately two seconds, careful observation gives us a significant glimpse behind Christie's emotion curtain on this issue.

At 0:29, just after Tapper says, "... but I wonder what you think about ..." we see a subtle body language cluster of signals. There is once again a very slight thinning of Christie's lips along with a bit of nostril flaring, mild mid-face tightening and bilateral eyelid closure. All of these occur just as the Governor begins to reach for his tie and indicate anger-anxiety.

During the 0:30 - 0:32 segment, the possible 2016 Presidential Candidate displays a "Tie Stroke". A tie stroke is an example of a nonverbal MAP-surrogate. A MAP (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier) in short is a form of self-touching. Here Christie's tie is an extension of his body (thus a surrogate). MAPs are typically seen during times of increased anxiety. Depending on the other nonverbals with which they are clustered, MAPs can have different and more specific meanings.

A tie stroke is a less overt subconscious substitute for another body part, wherein the front, long portion of the tie is falsely adjusted, held, lifted, caressed or groomed during times of elevated anxiety - rather than touching a body part.

One common female analog for this behavior is adjusting or touching a necklace.

There are many other significant nonverbal signs in this short video. What others did you see on a second viewing which you didn't spot the first time?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2347:
Body Language, Jazz Hands and Powerball

Within the context of performance dance, "Jazz Hands" are a configuration of palms directed towards the audience with fingers splayed. This deliberate gesture in performance may also be referred to as "Jazz Fingers" or "Spirit Fingers" are more commonly seen with Jazz dance, revue, cheerleading, show choir and musicals.

In the video above (during 2:00 - 2:02) and captured below in an image, the translator for Pedro Quezada shows us the off-stage, real world (and performed subconsciously or at the edge-of-consciousness) version of jazz hands. Mr. Quezada, a hard working husband and father of five, who owns and works at a deli in New Jersey, won the 338 million Powerball jackpot this past week.

In stage performances, Jazz hands & fingers are associated with exuberance and melodrama. They may also imply a level of campiness. In the everyday they indicate these same emotions in an effort to recreate a truly excited - or sarcastically (falsely) excited retelling of a story or event. They are often associated with a coexisting arm movement of rapid shaking. In body language parlance they are a variety of an "illustrator". Straight men tend to have their elbows further from their body when using this nonverbal, while women and gay men most often display jazz hands with their elbows much closer to their abdomen. To differentiate between the two emotional extremes of jazz hands (sincere vs. insincere) - one must look elsewhere in the "nonverbal sentence" aka the body language cluster.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2222:
Corey Booker's Body Language Indicates that
He does NOT want to Run for Governor of New Jersey

Cory Booker, the Mayor of Newark, was interviewed today in on "Face the Nation". In this segment Bob Schieffer asks him if he will run in New Jersey's Gubernatorial race which is up for grabs in November, 2013. After Hurricane Sandy however, the incumbent Chris Christie enjoys approval ratings as high as 77%. Based on the nonverbal cues displayed in this video, Mayor Booker has a high degree of anxiety about running for governor of the Garden State. His body language shows significantly less anxiety when asked about the possibility of running for a U.S. Senate seat.

In short, Cory Booker's nonverbal signals indicate he has significant anxiety about running for governor this next cycle and that his heart isn't in it. He most probably will not enter the race for the New Jersey Governorship

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2174:
President Obama, Hurricane Sandy,
Body Language and Thumbs Backwards Arms Akimbo

President Barack Obama and Governor Chris Christie are shown here at the Brigantine Beach Community Center in Brigantine, New Jersey on 31 October 2012 speaking with residents affected by Hurricane Sandy turned Frankenstorm-Superstorm. One notable nonverbal here is the President's, Thumbs Backwards Arms Akimbo. This body language combined with his feet placement a shoulder's width apart conveys a very alpha, dominant emotional tone. It projects power and authority.

The thumbs backwards arms akimbo is also commonly seen when the mind is made up and a person is ready to take action.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2173:
The Presidential Election and the Independent Voter -
Multiple Body Language Displays

In this CNN video interview/profile of an independent voter in Jefferson County, Colorado - we see in a few seconds a rapid succession of nonverbal displays. Corky Grimm, the bicycler and owner of the Green Mountain Sports shows us his true emotional tone. There's a multitude of body language examples in this story - here are a few:

2:10 - 2:11 - Left eyebrow and left forehead contracted and raised, Incredulity display

2:15 - 2:16 - Eyelids partially closed, concave-up furrow in lower eyelids, smooth and
uncontracted forehead, corners of mouth directed primarily upwards, only upper
teeth displayed - dynamic increase in crows feet - all indicate a Sincere Smile

2: 22 - Unilateral (left) closed mouth asymmetrical pseudo-smile, subtle left mid-face
tightening, and although we can't see directly, indications of left nostril flaring all
            show Contempt

2:23 - Tongue protrusion, Anxiety display, possible Disgust component

2:23 - 2:24 - Lip compression (straight horizontal line) and lip thinning - highly indicative of Anger

2: 25 - 2:27 - Lower teeth display, jaw jut, jaw-teeth clench - all indicate Anger

This is a great example of the very rapid and dynamic nature of multiple nonverbals appearing in quick succession. Mr. Grimm has, like many, been through a lot in the great recession and, at least from what's his body language displays in this short video, does a better job than most at keeping his feelings concealed. Do you know who he'll vote for next Tuesday?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2172:
Governor Chris Christie's Body Language of Contempt -
Microexpressions and Subtle Displays

Like most of the Governors of the N.E. United States, in the wake of Hurricane-turned Frankenstorm-Superstorm Sandy - New Jersey's Chris Christie has his hands very full. In this CNN interview with Piers Morgan, the Governor's body language displayed some interesting tells when Piers' questioned him regarding what he thought about some people being surprised by his strong praising of President Obama and the nonpartisan and collegial vibes this gave off.

While there were several other body language signals in this video, Governor Christie displayed a microexpression of contempt at the 0:22 and again at the 0:42 mark and a much longer duration, but low-level/subtle expression of contempt during a good portion of the first 1:02 of this video. These nonverbal signals tells us not that Christie has contempt in this video for Barack Obama - but rather that he has contempt for anyone who would call into question his sincerity regarding his earlier praising of the President.
