Body Language Analysis No. 4098: President Trump and Puerto Rico's Governor Ricardo Rosselló - A Candid Moment in the Oval Office - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday President Trump met with Governor Ricardo Rosselló of Puerto Rico in the Oval Office. From a body language perspective, two of their handshakes were particularly noteworthy.

During 1:32 in the above video, President Trump initiates a handshake. He does so with a palm-up configuration (as is typical for the President) - and in so doing, subordinates himself

Moreover, Trump's position on the right hand side of the "stage" (Oval Office) allows Governor Rossello to then have the more alpha position. Rossello's hand, from our view, covers Trump's hand. The Governor amplifies his alpha status further by grabbing the President's elbow with his left hand.

Very few people try this "elbow grab" with Donald Trump. This evokes anger in the President and he pulls his hand away after, what for him, was an abnormally brief handshake. Note the evanescent features of anger on President Trump - especially his clenched jaw and his mid facial tension.

Watch this portion of the video at regular speed and again at 1/2 and 1/4 speed as the still image does not capture its dynamic nature.

The President then displays Disgust as well as a Forward Lip Purse. A forward lip purse indicates feelings of secret disagreement and/or clandestine plan(s).

Later in the same meeting, at 6:17, President Trump initiates another handshake and this time Governor Rossello clasps the underside/backside of Trump's hand in a classic "Double-Hander".

The Governor then further up-regulates his alpha tone of this handshake by moving is left hand on top of the President's - while both men then transition to a "Bitter Smile" facial expression. Each leader also has a component of frustration (although President Trump's frustration is greater in this moment).

Summary: Although Ricardo Rossello is subordinate to Donald Trump, the Governor's body language during these moments were significantly more alpha than the President's. While both men are partially suppressing their frustration, President Trump is also trying to conceal his anger.

Body Language Analysis No. 3987: Chris Christie Denies His Day at The Beach - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Due to a political budget infighting at the state government level, New Jersey public beaches have been closed for the past three days.

Yet the beaches were not to everybody.

At a press conference on Sunday, Governor Christie was asked (beginning at 1:16 in the above video), "Governor, you look like you got some sun -"

Governor Christie answered: "No, I didn't Claude, but, ahum, go ahead. I didn't get any sun today."

As he says, "I didn't get any sun today", the Governor looks far to his right - well away from Claude (the journalist).

Eye contact very frequently either greatly diminishes during deception - or turns into a stare (unnaturally high eye contact).

When he made this statement, Chris Christie was unaware he and his family had been photographed on a public New Jersey Beach which was closed to the public.

A few seconds later (during 1:23), just before he takes a drink, Governor Christie is displaying a mixture of both contempt (primarily noted on his left midface with deepening of his left nasolabial fold, tension in his "mustache area", and flaring of his left nostril) as well as disgust disgust (his entire midface and mouth).

Taking a drink allows a person to, at least temporarily, break their existing expression (here contempt/disgust) and "reset" their game face or "lying mask".

When we cover, touch, or rub/scratch our mouths or lips when making a declarative statement - it is extremely suggestive of deception. When we have a drink in our hands (or pick one up) - it acts as a catalyst - disinhibiting the resistance to touching our face during a lie (with the cup and drink acting as a surrogate for the fingers) - therefore making this telling gesture much more likely.

Thus, if you're suspect someone may lie to you (whether you're a supervisor,  detective, parent, etc.) - always make sure they have a drink available and positioned close to their dominant hand.

Their drink is your lie detector.

The mouth and throat also become rapidly dry prior to and during a lie - making this is an additional reason for "deception quenching" (and hard swallows).

Taking a drink also stalls for a few seconds - such that one can psychologically recover from the act of lying as well as formulate a verbal answer or clever (misdirecting) follow-up statement.

Summary: Governor Chris Christie was caught in a blatant lie regarding his family's day at the beach. His press conference, a portion of which is detailed here, provides some classic body language examples of deception detection.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3670: Paul LePage's Voicemail Rant - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday, Maine Governor Paul LePage left a voice mail on State Representative Drew Gattine's voice mail and invited him to make it public.

LePage said (audio recording above), “Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage. would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you c***sucker. I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I’m a racist. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist c***sucker. You … I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.

Later that day, LePage told some reporters, “When a snot-nosed little guy from Westbrook calls me a racist, now I’d like him to come up here because, tell you right now, I wish it were 1825. And we would have a duel, that’s how angry I am, and I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton. I would point it right between his eyes, because he is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he’s been in this Legislature to help move the state forward.

Drew Gattine then went on record Thursday saying that he never called LePage a racist, explaining “What I said to the television reporter today is that the kind of racially charged comments the governor made are not at all helpful in solving what the real problem is,”

Friday morning the Governor walked-back his statement regarding a duel and issued a non-apology apology for the people of Maine hearing the voicemail, but not to Mr. Gattine. A portion of the Governor's Friday statement is included in the video above from 1:38 - 1:51. Throughout this short video clip Gov. LePage displays dramatic displays of disgust. The image below was captured during 1:46.

Summary: Paul LePage certainly has disgust for Drew Gattine. It's important to note that the nonverbal example shown above was not however recorded during his voicemail or his subsequent duel "wish" - but rather during his explanation of the incident to reporters.

Physical threats, even those issued in hypothetical scenarios or in alleged joking, should not be readily dismissed. Moreover threats to commit bodily harm when accompanied by nonverbal displays of contempt, disgust or anger - are red flags, often not purely metaphorical and should be taken very seriously.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3317: Scott Walker Drops Out of Presidential Race - A Classic Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today Scott Walker withdrew from the 2016 Presidential race. There are now fifteen republican candidates vying for the White House.

Not surprisingly during his press conference, the Wisconsin Governor displayed many key body language moments - and multiple facial expressions of regret. In the video above this important nonverbal signal is very classic and quite noticeable during 0:16 - immediately after he says the crucial statement, "... I will suspend my campaign immediately ..."

Although he's looking down for more reasons than just to refer to his notes, some particularly essential distinctions to make here include the lateral (sideways) movement of Mr. Walker's cheeks and mouth - along with the corners of his mouth down-turned as the lips are stretching and thinning. This mouth configuration of regret is prototypical - and it's made all day long all - but it's nearly always glossed over or more often outright missed. Walker shows us his regret "on display" in a very expected context - so many more people will "see" it (even though they missed this same emotion hundreds of times on their loved-ones and business associates faces' just in the past few days).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3233: Chris Christie formally enters the 2016 Presidential Race - What about his Body Language? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Christie made his 2016 Presidential Campaign official yesterday - giving his announcement speech at the high school from which he graduated. Many people, including the New Jersey Governor himself, have described his style as "plain-speaking" and "blunt" (e.g., "... I mean what I say and I say what I mean ..."). This is political-speak for a "working man's sincerity" in attempt to court "the common person's vote". What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of his speech.

From a body language perspective, Christie very commonly not only projects an alpha emotional tone - but is often quite hyper-alpha. His paralanguage and his verbal communication are also similarly more extreme. Of course Governor Christie may still be very sincere and plain-speaking without being hyper-alpha, overly-aggressive and out-right angry. He is confusing the two qualities of anger/assertiveness with sincerity/plain-speaking - as if they were two parts of the same whole - yet of course they're not. Chris Christie can still be blunt and sincere without getting angry.

At the 16:35 mark, Governor Christie continues, "... America is tired of hand-wringing and indecisiveness and weakness in the oval office. We need to have strength and decision-making and authority back in the oval office and that is why today I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Republican nomination for President of the United States of America! ..."

It is curious (and ironic) that in this particularly important paragraph Governor Christie uses the nonverbal metaphor of "hand-wringing". Hand-wringing in both body language and common speech conjures up images and emotions of indecisiveness, emotional dissonance and anxiety. Yet for much of this speech Chris Christie paces back and forth across the stage in what also signals similar anxiety and inner-conflict as well as the "bleeding" of nervous-energy. He is criticizing others for worrying (outwardly and inwardly) while he himself is doing that exact same thing - and telegraphing it too.

It is never good to use any body language too often. Over-doing anything will inevitably back-fire. Chris Christie should have had a wireless microphone so as to have both hands free (during this or any speech). A hand-held microphone engenders monotonous behavior with the free hand. Index finger (forefinger) pointing is cross-culturally and universally negatively received. It makes people feel berated and belittled. It destroys rapport and will cost votes (it does however make it's user feel powerful ... while it simultaneously up-regulates the users anger). The Governor moreover amplifies this negative nonverbal even further by his dramatic and repetitive use of the hand-chop - thus becoming a "finger-point hand-chop" illustrator. This is one of the worse nonverbals signals anyone can use (even in a highly-partisan, hand-picked crowd such as this setting).

Christie's courted the center-leaning voters during his last gubernatorial race - which served him well. He may be well served by a similar strategy in such a crowded republican presidential primary. However by using such anger and hyper-alpha qualities expressed in his verbal language, paralanguage and body language - will dramatically reduce his ability to win the his party's nomination.

Governor Christie - you can be both plain speaking and blunt without being angry and aggressive.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3226: Bobby Jindal Jumps In the 2016 Presidential Race - Puts "Family Meeting" online - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Bobby Jindal made it official today - he's running for President. He's the thirteenth republican to vie for the White House in the 2016 race. No one was surprised by this announcement - not even his family.

The current Governor of Louisiana's announcement is the most bizarre, low-energy, ill-advised and poorly thought-out modes of declaring candidacy ever seen for such a high office.

The 1:49 second video appears to be some semblance of a family-meeting, yet most of the family for the majority of the time was emotionally uncomfortable - including the candidate. The video seems to be clandestinely recorded. And while, as a campaign tactic, this certainly won't win him points with privacy advocates - it is creepy across the board (and whose foot is that on the far left of the video?).

The person we see the least of all is the Governor himself - as he positioned himself behind a tree limb. From a nonverbal perspective, this sends very strong signals of emotional dissonance - like a child hiding behind his mother's skirt at a public gathering, not wanting to be fully seen. This nonverbal alone projects very low confidence. In addition - it's a fundamental nonverbal axiom, that the less we see of a person - the less we trust them - which of course is congruent with the apparent secrecy. If he wanted to use such a video, he should have been seated facing the camera.

For about 5 seconds (0:30 - 0:35) the Governor leaned forward in his chair (when he said to his two sons not to tell to anyone at baseball or soccer - more than a bit ironic - holding his children to a different standard and letting everyone see this).

Mrs. Jindal maintained a position in the middle of her chair - not against its back, yet not fully forward either. Along with her hands hiding below the table - this cluster projects low emotional comfort and non-disclosure. She felt "on display" and with high likelihood had foreknowledge of the video. The Jindal son at the right was the only one seated significantly forward. He was also the only one with his hands above the table. The Governor displayed low-trust and high anxiety with his hands on the front of his thighs (briefly on his knees) throughout the video's duration. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) would also be a huge red-flag if this were a business meeting or negotiation.

If both parents would have been seated-forward at the table (taking a cue from their one son), then the other children would have been more engaged. This would also been more and engendered affection. Hugs, hand holding, high-fives, smiling and sincere laughter would have been spontaneous. The laughter here was in large majority nervous and lacking sincerity.

0:41, just after Gov. Jindal says, "... we have decided that we will be running for president this year."

Yet very low energy was projected by everyone.

0:45

Thumbs-up illustrator given by the son in the bright yellow-green shirt. He also appears to have a sincere smile when his mother asks, "What do you think about that?"

The Jindal's daughter displays a "hand-shrug" when her mom asks, "What about you?" - at 0:48.

In this context this body language indicates she isn't sure or she doesn't care. If the Governor wanted to show his children as part of this announcement for his candidacy for President of the United States - there's absolutely no way this universal nonverbal display should have been included.

In summary, Bobby Jindal sent strong signals of low confidence, low trust and secrecy on an occasion when he should have been projecting high confidence, assertiveness and openness. Moreover the family image and/or idea of the Governor as a loving family man backfired big-time with this heavily botched announcement.

Time for damage-control.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3221: Gov. Nikki Haley Choking Back Tears - is She Sincere? Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

At the very beginning of this video (0:03), Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina briefly looks upward twice. Such an upward gaze is a rarely recognized yet very common and subconscious mechanism which is seen during moments when a person is trying to suppress their sadness and crescendo to tears. Some people have suggested that Gov. Haley's emotions here were insincere. They were very sincere. Of course this doesn't mean that every issue she will speak about regarding this shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston will all be directly from her heart - however this moment was indeed very sincere.

What other nonverbal signals seen in this video are indicative of sincerity?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3200: Martin O'Malley announces Candidacy for 2016 Presidential Race - Body Language of Emotional Processing (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Martin O'Malley, a former Governor of Maryland, announced his candidacy for the 2016 Presidential election today in Baltimore. In the above video at 1:07 Governor O'Malley continues, "... and that is why today, to you and to all who can hear my voice, I declare that I am a candidate for President of the United States - and I - am running - for you ..." Immediately prior to his declaration (1:06 - 1:07), O'Malley wipes his forehead with his right shirt sleeve. No doubt his forehead was sweating - for it was warm and he, of course, has understandable anxiety. However this nonverbal MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) can be further nuanced - for this arm is also covering both eyes and indeed most of his face. It's considerably rare for anyone with even a moderate amount of public speaking experience, let alone a former governor and now presidential candidate to display this level of facial touching in the midst of a speech or press conference (and never recommended). This bilateral eye cover is an example of emotional processing. Said another way - his emotions are somewhat overloaded with the enormity of the moment, and although his intellect has planned for this event - his emotional brain is playing catch-up.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3142: Mike Pence - Governor of Indiana interview with George Stephanopoulos & the Religious Freedom Restoration Act - What Makes Gov. Pence Look Worse? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Governor Mike Pence was interviewed on Sunday by George Stephanopoulos regarding the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" - a new law in the State of Indiana. Governor Pence has also expressed interest in the possibility of running for President in 2016. From a nonverbal communication perspective, one issue of particular note here is that Governor Pence has a partial facial nerve palsy on his left side. This is probably old - and from an injury or possibly idiopathic (Bell's Palsy). Below are just five of many examples captured during this recent interview.

When only one eyebrow is raised (or both, yet with significant asymmetry) this should call to mind incredulity and or deception (depending on what other nonverbal signals with which it is clustered and the verbal language and paralanguage which accompanies it).

When a person has such facial asymmetry - and they're speaking sincerely - they're often interpreted as not believing their own words, being insincere or lying. Thus Gov. Pence and others who are trying to convey truth and confidence (and that of course should include everyone) must strongly consider Botox injections on the stronger (healthy) side so as to bring about more facial symmetry - and thus avoid such misinterpretations.

Whether Governor Pence is going to remain governor of Indiana or run for President, he is in need of some therapeutic Botox.

Yet there's another conundrum here - one for us. How do we:
  • Recognize this condition in others?
  • Once you know someone has this facial nerve palsy, how do you differentiate:
    • Simple Facial Asymmetry from
    • Insincerity, Disbelief, or Deception?
Hmmm ....

What other recent U.S. Presidential Candidate had this same condition? Did he win?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3104: 2016 Presidential Candidate Hopeful Gov. Scott Walker - and a Body Language Signal which a Leader should NEVER adopt (PHOTO)

Scott Walker, the current Governor of Wisconsin, is pictured above on the North Lawn of the White House. Walker has formed a 527 organization in an effort to explore and/or initiate a run for the U.S. Presidency in 2016.

Governor Walker is obviously posing in this photo - yet his body language is configured in a manner which NO ONE who is a leader or fancies themselves a leader SHOULD EVER BE. Walker shouldn't punt or pretend here. But he is in sore need of body language expertise.

In this photo, Walker's body language is shouting he's not up to the job.

Many men and boys on the red carpet will pose with one or both hands in their pockets'. As with many things Hollywood - such clichés may spread through the culture. Yet this is only a parroting of others' acting - and thus is by definition at least two levels removed from sincerity.

It's rare to find a photo of a U.S. President or any head-of-state from any country or any political party - with any hands in his pockets. And it's one nonverbal over which they should always maintain veto power. Those who stand (or God-forbid walk) with one or both hands in their pockets at the very least transmit strong signals of distancing and disengagement. Depending on the other nonverbals with which they are clustered, hands in pockets will also very often indicate low emotional comfort, low confidence and a considerably beta/demure emotional tone. Try standing like this - its mere mimicking will evoke these feelings.

If you hold office, running for office, in any type of leadership position (or if you want or need to feel confident) - NEVER stand (or sit) like this and of course NEVER let anyone see or photograph you with your hands in your pockets.

Bob McDonnell is pictured here outside a federal courthouse in Richmond with his daughters on Tuesday, 6 January 2015. He was just sentenced to two years in prison on corruption charges.

In this moment, the former Virginia Governor's face is expressing two emotions. His primary emotion is that of regret - characterized mainly by the lateral and slightly downward vectoring of his mouth corners.

Note also the downward and inward movement of McDonnnell's eye brows, the slight tension of his lower eyelids, the tension of his "mustache area" and his mild nostril dilation (flaring). The cluster beacons his secondary emotion - that of anger.
