Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2617: Walter Cronkite Announces President John Kennedy's Death - Body Language and Suppression of Grief (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

"From Dallas, Texas, the flash, apparently official, President Kennedy died at One P.M. Central Standard Time; Two O'clock Eastern Standard Time; some thirty eight minutes ago ...[tongue-in-cheek at 0:19 mark and imaged below] ... Vice President [voice crack] Johnson [cough] has left the hospital in ah Dallas, but we do not know ah, to where he has proceeded - ah presumably he will be taking the oath of office shortly and become ah, the thirty-sixth President of the United States."  

The "Tongue-in-Cheek" facial expression (in the above video at 1:31 and captured in the image below) has several possible meanings depending on the other nonverbal signals with which it is clustered (can you name them all?). In this most famous news clip wherein Walter Cronkite announces President John Kennedy's death, we see an example of this body language being used to suppress grief. Moreover Cronkite's cracking voice along with his cough to clear his throat, example paralanguage congruencies with this emotion.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2483: Alex Rodriguez's Subtle Sadness Signal Body Language, PEDs and A-Rod (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

More A-Rod. Not because he's popular - but because he demonstrates a particular nonverbal that is relatively difficult to find on video.  The images below, which are captured at 0:37 and 1:07 - 1:08 respectively from the video above show two (of many here exampled) versions of a very evanescent and subtle change. In both of these two moments, A-Rod's chin briefly wrinkles.

In this cluster-context this nonverbal is highly reliable for suppression of sadness. In fact, Rodriguez is on the verge of tears.

In each of these examples you can see slight but highly significant quivering of the muscles on the front of A-Rod's chin.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2229: President Obama and a Body Language Signal of Holding Back Grief, Tears & other Negative Emotions

My deepest condolences for the families and loved-ones of the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting tragedy.

In his address to the nation today, President Obama became emotional - and who among us wouldn't? For if tears are not shed for children and the innocent, what remains for which to cry? And while tears are easy signals of sadness to spot, there were other body language tells which were not so evident to most. At the 3:38 mark in the above video, the President displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). The inward lip roll is a nonverbal signal of anxiety and strong negative emotions - and more specifically the psyche's attempt to contain them from escalating. While the most common emotion being suppressed when an ILR is seen is anger - here Mr. Obama's grief and tears are being squelched. The ILR can also be seen just before, or in the initial stages of an act of physical exertion.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2049: Emotionally Processing a Sad or Shocking Event

When we cry, we cover our eyes to wipe tears and to achieve a small level of privacy - however another primary (and often overlooked) reason is to aide in our "emotional processing". When we are dramatically saddened or emotionally shocked, our intellects may understand what has transpired, but our emotions often lag far behind. When people cover their eyes after witnessing a shocking, disturbing or sad event/scene - this nonverbal is a clear signal that they are emotionally processing bad news. Such body language phenomenon exists even for those who were born blind.

Recently discovered, the remains of 520 Bosnian Muslim victims (a small fraction of those killed) from the 1995 Srebrenica Massacre were buried on July 11 at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery.
