Body Language Analysis No. 4057: Steve Bannon's "60 Minutes" Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the 60 Minutes preview video above, Charlie Rose interviews Steve Bannon - President Trump's former Chief White House Strategist (a newly created position) and CEO of candidate Trump's campaign.

From a body language perspective, there multiple valuable tells in this interview - one of which is discussed here.

During 1:37 - 1:38, as Charlie Rose says, "You seem to have done that at every point in the campaign - when he was in trouble, asking him to double-down on his rhetoric, double-down in terms of appealing to his base .... ", when the camera switches to Bannon's face, at the very end of Mr. Rose's sentence and for about a second afterward, Mr. Bannon Clenches his jaw muscles (Masseter muscles). Look carefully at the back of his jaw - in front of and slightly below his ears for a bulging muscle. His upper lip, which although is not very thick on Bannon's resting face - thins out so dramatically, it disappears. The area above his upper lip and below his nose (the "mustache area") also is significantly tightened.

We see this same pattern at 2:08 - 2:09 on Mr. Bannon's face as Mr. Rose says, "Did you lose confidence of anybody because they came at you at that point and said, 'Look, w, w, he ought to get out of this race - other than - Reince Priebus'?..."

If you look carefully, you can even see Bannon doing this when he is back-lit during 2:05 - 2:08.

Also, during 3:18, 3:27 - 3:28, and 3:29 - 3:30 - as Steve Bannon and Charlie Rose were discussing
Governor Chris Christie, Mr. Bannon again displays these same nonverbal signals multiple times. Intriguingly, there was also an additional component of nostril flaring and forward jutting of the jaw present in this segment.

In this second video of the same interview, at 1:10 Charlie Rose says, "I tell ya where many people suggest it should have gone. It should have gone in terms of denouncing - specifically from the very beginning - neo-Nazis and white supremacists and people of that political view - and they should have gone there because - ahhh, those were people that Americans in World War II went to fight against and you should have instantly have denounced them - and you didn't at first instinct. In fact, you seemed to be doubling-down in terms of a moral equivalency."

During most of Mr. Rose's statement, Mr. Bannon is clenching his jaw repeatedly. This is best seen on Bannon's face during 1:22 - 1:32. Yet as with the examples already discussed - if you look carefully, some of this jaw-clenching display can even be seen from behind when Mr. Bannon is back-lit.

All of these examples show Mr. Bannon, to varying degrees, in moments of adrenaline surges specific to anger. Please watch the videos carefully, as the still images do not capture the dynamic nature of these nonverbal signs.

Of course, we're all allowed to feel anger.  We're human beings. Yet - in a healthy individual, as with all emotions, anger should be:

• Contextual
• Proportional
• Not too frequent

Summary: This is but one conversation/interview. However, it's profoundly important to note that when jaw clenching, forward jutting of the jaw, thinning of the upper lip, nostril flaring, tightening of the mustache region (or other anger signals) are frequently displayed - take heed, for the person is far from emotional baseline - and Impulse Control Disorder may very well be lurking.

Body Language Analysis No. 4015: Reince Priebus' First Post-Resignation Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The above video is an excerpt from Reince Priebus' first interview after his resignation on Thursday as the White House Chief of Staff. Mr. Priebus' body language signals are worthy of examining. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of his exchange with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

REINCE PRIEBUS (Beginning at 0:44): "...One other thing - I'm always going to be a Trump fan, I'm on 'Tream Trump', ahum, and, I look forward to helping him achieve, ah, his goals and his agenda for the American people."

WOLF BLITZER: "But why did you resign? I'm still, ah, I'm still trying to understand. I, I underst- stand that you told the President you wanted to resign, he accepted your resignation yesterday, but why? What were there a series of issues? Was there one thing that one thing that came up and se-,  and you decided, you know what, I no longer can do this?"

Just after Reince Priebus says, "...One other thing - I'm always going to be a Trump fan, I'm on 'Tream Trump', ahum, and, I look forward to helping him achieve, ah, his goals and his agenda for the American people" - his nostrils momentarily flare (0:57).

Reince Priebus' stuttering and his mispronunciation of "Team Trump" as "Tream Trump", is a signal of his anxiety, low confidence, and low emotional comfort. Given the fact that he was essentially forced into resigning, his beta behavior is contextual and "leaks" out during this television interview.

Mr. Priebus' nostril flaring at the very end of his statement, signals a significant adrenaline surge and further signals the "leaking" of his true emotions. This is analogous to an over-boiling pot - momentarily pushing its lid off.

As Wolf Blitzer says, "... I, I underst- stand that you told the President ...", Reince Priebus displays a "Tight Tongue Jut" coincident with an extended blink (1:02). Note this signal came just after Blitzer said, "But why did you resign?"

A tight tongue jut (not to be confused with a loose tongue jut) signals emotions of strong distaste, disdain, and being repulsed by a thought, an action, person, group of people, etc. This is a clear signal that Mr. Priebus did not at all want to resign.

If you've ever fed an infant creamed asparagus or any other food they didn't want - it's no coincidence that their tongue behaves in this exact same manner.

During 1:03, simultaneous with Mr. Blitzer saying, "... that you told the President you wanted to resign ...", Mr. Priebus immediately segues into an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR).

An inward lip roll is the psyche's attempt at both suppressing strong emotions from appearing on one's face as well as also preventing crescendoing internally.

As Blitzer says, "... you wanted to resign, he accepted your resignation yesterday, but why?", Priebus displays a Hard Swallow (1:04) - which is a non-specific signal of anxiety.

Summary:

Although considered by many to not be a very effective White House Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus was forced into resigning - and it was not act of his free will. As with anyone else in a similar situation, and very much contradictory to his verbal statement - he very much resents this and has disdain for the person or persons who precipitated his leaving the West Wing.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3576: Marco Rubio's Endorsement of Donald Trump - Body Language (PHOTOS)

Marco Rubio recently gave his endorsement of Donald Trump for President. This surprised a lot of pundits (and the public) given the volume of bad blood between the two candidates in the last 12 months.

The expression on the Florida Senator's face in the image above is one that we should hope to not see too often in any leader.

This is a particularly good nonverbal image - for the angle affords allows an excellent view of the clenching of his jaw muscles (masseter muscles), the crinkling of his chin, the jutting forward of his jaw ("Jaw Jut"), the tightening of his "Mustache Area", the flaring of his nostrils (given the mustache area tension, we can infer that his left nostril is also flared) - AND the "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR).

This cluster is highly characteristic of a Suppression of Anger - both in the psyche's attempt at stifling inward growth of this emotion, as well as trying to not let it crescendo outwardly - on the face.

Take Home Point: Senator Marco Rubio does NOT want to endorse Trump (there have many nonverbal, verbal and paralanguage indications of this over the past months) but he is doing so out of duty to the Republican Party (and, of course, his strong dislike for Hillary Clinton). Whenever the body language and the verbal language are in disagreement (showing emotional and cognitive dissonance) - it's the body language which is telling the truth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3494: Donald Trump reacts to questions about Breitbart News reporter allegedly getting roughed up by his Campaign Manager - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During a recent event in Jupiter, Florida, Donald Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, allegedly grabbed Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields by the arm as she attempted to ask the candidate a question. Ms. Fields also alleges that this physical contact resulted in bruising. The video above shows Donald Trump being asked about this incident. Unfortunately some of this Trump's expressions are initially blocked by words on the screen and other people, however there are a couple of seconds which are very telling.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the 0:57 - 0:58 segment of this video. This series of images were captured just after Mr. Trump says, "... Perhaps she made the story up. I think that's what happened, okay? ...".

Trump then turns his body and his head. Note his lips rapidly acquire a thinned, horizontal configuration - the classic Thinned Lips of Anger.

There is a microexpression component of contempt in this moment - evident in his mustache area on his right side.

Here we can better see his thinned lips here together with his mid-facial tension. His contempt expression is waning somewhat, yet there is some significant disgust displayed in this instant.

Trump's anger, contempt and disgust cluster is resolving (yet still evident in his lips) as he begins to return to his baseline expression.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3222: First Look Promo: Nick's Escape: Fear the Walking Dead: Series Premiere - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

A "First Look Promo" was released yesterday for The Walking Dead Companion/Spinoff Series, Fear the Walking Dead.  It's titled Nick's Escape (see above). Nick is played by Frank Dillane - and he's running from something - presumably a walker. This video clip is included here because, from a body language perspective, Dillane does a considerably better job than most actors in achieving and maintaining the nonverbal signals indicative of a fear expression.

0:07

If you're a director, be aware that when a head is turned and (or) the eyes are looking laterally (as both is occurring here) they will naturally open considerably wider. This adds to the emotional feel of the face of fear - especially when looking back during a chase.

0:11

While Dillane's eyes are not opened as widely as they would be here (if he truly were being chased by a walker), his mouth - pulled extremely laterally and downward - is particularly well acted in this moment.

0:13

Mid-facial tension is common and expected with fear.

0:16

Once again - very widely opened eyes achieved with a lateral gaze.

0:18

Flared nostrils accompanies both fear and physical exertion - both of which are components of this "fleeing from fear" (remember Flight of Fight [or Freeze] from biology/physiology class?).

What other emotions also have flared nostrils?

0:19

Most people can open their eyelids widely if the forehead muscles are recruited to assist - however in high adrenaline states (such as fear) the eyelids themselves will open very widely without the forehead muscles (although they may also be contracted).

0:24

When the head/neck is tilted back - and the eyes are looking straight ahead - the eyelids naturally are less open. However had this been true high level fear, the eyelids would be retracted higher even with this temporary tilt - and we would see more "white" (sclera) on the upper part of his eye.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3217: Rachel Dolezal, NAACP and Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Much has been made in the last several days regarding Rachel Dolezal and how she has allegedly passed herself off as African-American. This post is not intended to pass judgement on whether such actions, if true, are ethical or unethical - or to comment on any possible racial aspects or ramifications of doing so. Rather this website serves as an objective reference source for the science and art of Body Language/Nonverbal Communication. In an effort to be both practical and academic, many examples from/of varied cultures, politicians, professional athletes, legal cases, public figures, etc. are cited in order to teach and illustrate both the interpretation of others' body language as well as the projection of one's own nonverbal skills in many different contexts - not to advance any political, religious or other agenda.

What is very obvious to all who view this interview is Ms. Dolezal's claim of not understanding and her non-answering of a straightforward question as well as her refusal to continue and walking abruptly away. What follows is of greater nuance - a partial nonverbal analysis of Ms. Dolezal.

7:44 to ~ 7:51

Unilateral Eyebrow and Forehead Elevation - when stating "... as a Black Studies Professor, I know what these images mean, and I take that very seriously given the history ..."

(David Meany, a spokesman for Eastern Washington University, is quoted in the International Business Times, "This [Dolezal's employment] is a part-time position to address program needs. Dolezal is not a professor,".

A unilateral eyebrow and forehead elevation is a classic nonverbal indicator of doubt and/or disbelief.

7:58

This is moment is subtle yet highly significant. A tilting of her upper head backwards as Ms. Dolezal's lower face/chin tilts forward - along with tension seen in the lower eyelids, flaring of her nostrils and tightening of the tissue above her upper lip and below her nose are all very telling. This nonverbal cluster is highly consistent primarily of anger and secondarily of disgust.

8:10

Greater disgust display with a higher degree of midface tension and nostril flaring.

In this context her extended blink is a disgust amplifier.

8:21

Obvious blushing with a poorly suppressed mouth smile

Jaw Jut (common with both suppressed smile and anger)

8:28

Deeper Blushing with Embarrassment and Sincere Smile.

Although no one desires to be embarrassed - it's extremely interesting to note that the smile of embarrassment is a sincere smile - although it may be suppressed to varying degrees (as it is above).

8:39

Face of Fear (subtle to mild)

Her eyelids subtly yet quickly open wider, tension is seen in lower eyelids and a mild "mouth of fear" are all displayed as Mrs. Dolezal begins to grapple with the ramifications of what is being discussed on camera.

8:50

Inward Lip Roll (ILR) just prior to walking off camera and refusing further questions

An inward lip roll is a signal that the emotional mind is attempting to suppress an inward crescendo of emotion - as well as trying to control any increase in outward expression.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2894: Maria Kirilenko, Alex Ovechkin and Subtle Body Language of .... (PHOTOS)

Maria Kirilenko has called off her engagement to Alex Ovechkin. Although in this image, the Russian tennis professional may not be directing it at her then Hockey Player (Captain of the Washington Capitals) fiancé - she is feeling anger. Note that her eyes and face are not directly facing the object of her anger. When we do not like, do not respect or do not trust another - we tend to not direct our feet, our torso, our head or our eyes directly at them.

Ms. Kirilenko's jaw is clenched and simultaneously slightly jutting forward (ergo "Jaw Jut") - both nonverbal signals of anger.

Maria's mouth is foreshortened as her lips are thinned - particularly her upper lip. These signs are also significant for anger.

The area above Kirilenko's upper lip and her nose (termed the "mustache area" in both genders) is contracted and tense. This tension co-exists with nostril flaring.

What other very slight signals of anger are seen on Ms. Kirilenko's face?

Maria's face does not have a full expression of anger. There are other components of this emotion which are not present here. Moreover, nonverbal signals of all emotions may exist for fractions of a second (microexpressions). These subtleties of both proportion and time are only two reasons why many don't see emotions displayed right in front of them - and thus suffer their ramifications. How many emotional displays have gone unseen by you this week?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2816: Donald Sterling Interview - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling gave an interview today with CNN's Anderson Cooper. A portion of this interview is included in the above video.

At 2:16 Cooper begins, "Did you apologize to him, er ...?"

Sterling then responds, "Well .... Aaaah ... if I said anything wrong, I'm sorry. He's [Magic Johnson] a good person and he [pause with expression of disgust during 2:27.8 - 2:29.8] and what am I gonna say ..."

Donald Sterling then went on to describe how although is great, he feels that Magic Johnson is not a good role model for the children of Los Angeles.

In this close up view of Donald Sterling's face, we see a classic expression of disgust. Note the tightening of his "mustache area" and a flaring of both nostrils. A disgust amplifier is also present in the partial closing of his eyelids.

What other nonverbal signal here demonstrates the presence of a second emotion?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis - Quiz No. 2615: Bill Clinton Receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom - And His Body Language Reveals What Emotions? (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Yesterday Bill Clinton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom along with 15 others. This award, along with the Congressional Gold Medal, is the highest that can be bestowed upon a American civilian. It was established 50 years ago by President John F. Kennedy.

The others recipients this year included Oprah Winfrey, Ernie Banks, Loretta Lynn, Ben Bradlee, Daniel Kahneman, Richard Lugar, Mario Molina, Bayard Rustin (posthumous), Daniel Inouye (posthumous), Arturo Sandoval, Dean Smith, Gloria Steinem, Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian, Patricia Wald and Sally Ride (posthumous).

At the very moment when President Obama hung the Medal of Freedom around President Clinton's neck - what does Bill's protruding Jaw tell you about his emotions?

The body language of thinned lips, a tense "mustache area" and a foreshortened mouth are very telling. What do these indicate?

What of Mr. Clinton's chin dimpling?

Do you note any significant nostril flaring?

Bill's jaw is also clenched. With what emotion(s) is this nonverbal sign consistent?

In the context of the other body language signals, what is the significance of the direction of President Clinton's gaze?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2611: George Zimmerman Arrested Again - The Body Language of His Mug Shot (VIDEO, PHOTO)

George Zimmerman was arrested again today. He was charged with felony aggravated assault - for allegedly pointing a shotgun in the face of his girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe. He was also charged with criminal mischief as well as domestic violence battery - both misdemeanors and in association with the same event.

Zimmerman's primary emotion being felt at the moment of today's mug shot is Anger. His Jaw is clenched and slightly forward in what is termed a "Jaw Jut". His nostrils are also mildly flared and his lower eyelids are mildly tensed. This nonverbal cluster is highly consistent with Anger.

Note also that Zimmerman's lips are thinned, foreshortened and mildly pursed. The tightening component is indicative of anger. The pursing portion however tells that George Zimmerman has clandestine disagreement. He is holding back at least some information in this moment. He also believes he has a relative alpha status and he also believes that he will be found innocent. This may sound ironic to some, but he has of course in the recent past been acquitted of murder of teenager Trayvon Martin and gained international notoriety in the process.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2383:
Elizabeth Colbert Busch vs. Former Gov. Mark Sanford
Body Language in Last Night's Debate

Last night Elizabeth Colbert Busch (Steven Colbert's sister) squared off against former Gov. Mark Sanford in their first and only debate for the U.S. House of Representative Seat for South Carolina's1st Congressional District. Some of the highlights are captured in the video above.

One moment in particular that is very illustrative from a body language perspective. Towards the end of this clip as Ms. Colbert Bush says, ".... I'm a fiscally conservative, independent, tough business woman ...." During this statement, Ms. Colbert-Busch shows several signals of anger. At the 2:32 mark in particular as she says "... independent ..." she shows a dramatic flash of anger that is very brief but just a bit longer than a microexpression. This nonverbal is fairly dramatic as her center eyebrows (only right side visible) moves downwards as her upper eyelids open wider. Her nasal flaring is dramatic and very telling as well. In addition, Ms. Colbert-Busch's jaw juts outward which is very easy to see in this side view (note her lower teeth are further forward than her upper teeth). A jaw jut is a signal significant of high levels of anger. Her lips are also pulled back tightly - significantly bearing both here upper and lower teeth - also very significant for anger.

Of course, this is not the entire debate, but in most other political settings this anger display would be ill-advised, however with Sanford's specific history it probably will result in a win.
