Body Language Analysis No. 4359: Trump and Putin in Paris - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During the remembrance ceremonies marking the Centenary of the end of WWI today in Paris, the interaction between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin was noteworthy.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the two men's exchange.

Many people have speculated regarding the significance of President Trump's jacket adjustment after shaking hands with President Putin. This is a common alpha-upregulatory behavior. Alpha upregulators are a set of body language behaviors displayed by individuals who normally may be moderately or even highly alpha personalities - when they're caught in the midst of a relatively beta moment. This is exactly what's occurring here.

Although he's normally alpha, Donald Trump feels he's beta to Vladimir Putin's alpha status. It's important to emphasize that this is Trump's perception - and this is why he feels the need to upregulate. Yet while Trump's psyche attempts to dial itself up, Putin is already walking away to his seat.

This is literally the same behavior of a beta gorilla halfheartedly pounding his chest - after the alpha male gorilla has already established his dominance.

Now, let's back up a bit. Just as Putin finishes shaking Trump's hand, he's trying hard to suppress his mouth smile. This is not a sincere smile - and in Putin's efforts to suppress it, along with his tightened mustache region, his eyelids are opened very wide as his eyebrows also elevate. Putin, an ex-KGB officer, in this moment, cannot maintain a poker face (a skill at which he's quite accomplished and otherwise routinely successful). This is profound.

Putin then gives Trump the Thumbs-up gesture. This universal nonverbal signal of optimism very much matches his facial expression. Note how his forehead has now relaxed, his eyebrows are also lowered and he has concave-up furrows in his lower eyelids (all requirements for a sincere smile). His mouth smile, while still somewhat suppressed, has broken through the thin facade. Putin is pleased.

As Vladimir reaches to shake Melania's hand (whilst still smiling), Trump pats Putin on the back. Note Trump's Jaw Retraction - along with an Inward Lip Roll. In this context, this nonverbal cluster indicates an effort to suppress strong emotions. 

Notice Emmanuel Macron's expression in this instant - it's one of contempt (a slight snarl-like configuration).

Trump maintains this jaw retraction as he stands back up. Macron's expression of contempt continues - combined with his right forehead elevating in disbelief.

Angela Merkel's central forehead is elevated along with a pseudo-smile, indicating her disgust and incredulity.

Putin then pats Trump on his left arm - just above his elbow. It's important to note that Putin did not touch Macron or Merkel in this manner.



But if we look back even further - at a few crucial seconds  -just as Putin was approaching the other leaders, we see a display of his which was omitted in the first video. Please watch just a few seconds - beginning at the 1:37:45 mark - of this second, comprehensive video.

As Putin approaches - walking closer to the other heads-of-state, he shows us a classic Tongue-In-Cheek display.

In this context - clustered with the other simultaneous nonverbal signals (e.g., his elevated central forehead), Putin's tongue-in-cheek behavior telegraphs his smug feelings of "I just won", "I gotcha".

SUMMARY: Donald Trump's nonverbal behavior in Paris today, indicates he feels that he is beta to Vladimir Putin's alpha. The American president clearly doth acquiesce. Moreover, Putin cannot contain his sincere emotions of joy-happiness with his dominance over Trump - and by extension, the United States.

Body Language Analysis No. 4331: Donald Trump Speech Two Days Prior To Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 7 June 2016, two days prior to the now infamous Trump Tower meeting, Donald Trump gave a speech in Westchester, New York. A video of that speech is included above. It took place on the same night the presumptive Republican nominee won primaries in California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

What follows is a nonverbal analysis of a small but crucial portion of that speech - when Trump teased the electorate with the forthcoming release of damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Beginning at 7:02, Candidate Trump continues, "... I am going to give a major speech on - probably Monday of next week and we're going to be discussing all of the things that have taken place with the Clintons. I think you're going to find it very informative and very, very interesting."

About a second after he finishes this sentence (during 7:20), Donald Trump displays a profoundly telling nonverbal signal - a Loose Tongue Jut.

A loose tongue jut indicates the thought feelings of:

• I've been bad
• I've done a foolish thing
• I've been caught/I'm going to be caught

If we look carefully though, less than a second prior to this loose tongue jut (also during 7:20), we see another significant display - subtle, but just as insightful: a Tongue-in-Cheek maneuver.

A tongue-in-cheek dynamic projects the thought-feelings of:

• I Won
• Gotcha!
• Overlapping Smugness

Now, look at this wider angle image of the same moment. Ivanka Trump's body language was also noteworthy. Ms. Trump, who, three seconds earlier, had been looking at the audience:

• Turned her head, neck, and eyes toward her father
• Shifted back and forth on her feet
• Momentarily suppressed a mouth smile
• Pulled her cheeks inward
• Blushed slightly
• Narrowed her eyes (partially closed her eyelids)

Ivanka Trump held this facial expression for about two seconds. The action of pulling or sucking one's cheeks inward - often biting the insides of the cheeks mildly to moderately - is a common subconscious and edge-of-consciousness maneuver occurring during the suppression of smiling. At 7:23, Ms. Trump can't resist and then smiles fully.

This particular cluster pattern of suppressed smiling was an example of Duping Delight. She is experiencing sincere joy-happiness in her belief that she knows a secret. It would have been very natural and normal for context to smile when your father is the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee, yet she reigned-in her smile. Her blushing while biting/sucking in her cheeks are especially telling - and indicate that she was doing her best to maintain a poker face - to avoid divulging information. She wanted to keep clandestine.

SUMMARY: Donald Trump's nonverbal behavior during this speech is highly consistent with his belief that he's about to receive politically damaging information regarding Hillary Clinton. He is smug and giddy with anticipation. This speech took place two days prior to the 9 June 2016 Trump Tower Meeting - and four days after Donald Trump Jr and Rob Goldstone arranged the meeting.

Moreover, Ivanka Trump's simultaneous nonverbal behavior indicates with high probability, that she also had foreknowledge of the Trump Tower meeting.

Body Language Analysis No. 4325: Part III - Trump Putin Helsinki Summit Press Conference - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This nonverbal analysis is (thus far) the second dissection of the Trump-Putin Helsinki Summit on this site (see below for a link to the first one).

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the Helsinki Presser focusing on several key responses of Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump - as Trump is answering a question from Jeff Mason (Reuters).

JEFF MASON (beginning at 4:27:16): Thank you. Mr. President, you tweeted this morning that it's U.S. foolishness, stupidity, and the Mueller probe that is responsible for the decline in U.S. relations with Russia. Do you hold Russia at all accountable for anything in particular? And if so, what would you, what would you consider them - that they are responsible for?

DONALD TRUMP: Yes I do. I hold, ah, both countries responsible. I think the that the United States has been foolish. I think we've all been foolish. We shoulda had this dialogue a long time (4:27:44 - 4:27:46) ago, [deep inhale] a long time, frankly, (4:27:47 - 4:27:49) before I got to office. And I think we're all, ah, to blame. I 'ink that the United States now has stepped forward, along with Russia - and we're getting together and we have a chance to do some great things, whether it's nuclear proliferation in terms of stopping, we have to do it. Ultimately, that's probably - the most important thing that we can be (Scratches four times in front of his right ear, 4:28:05 - 4:28:07) working on.

But, ah, (4:28:08 - 4:28:09) I do feel that, ah, we have both made some mistakes. ∆ (Begin fig leaf, 28:14) I think that thee, the probe is a disaster for our country. I think it's (4:28:19) kept us apart. It's kept us separated. There was no collusion - at all Ω (4:28:25, left eyebrow raises). Ah, everybody knows it. Ah, people are being brought out to the fore.

Ah, so far, that I know, virtually, none of it related to the campaign. And they're gonna have to try really hard to find something that did relate to the campaign. That was a clean campaign. I beat Hillary - Clinton easily and, frankly, ah, we beat her ∆ (End Fig leaf, 4:28:46) - and I'm not even saying from the standpoint, we won that race. And it's a shame there could even be a little bit of a cloud over it. Ah, people know that. People understand it. But the main thing — and we discussed this also — is zero collusion. It has had a negative impact upon - the relationship of the two largest nuclear powers in the world. We have ninety percent of nuclear power between the two countries. It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous what's going on with the probe.

During 4:27:44 - 4:27:46, Vladimir Putin displays a Tongue in Cheek dynamic, just AFTER Donald Trump says, "Yes I do. I hold, ah, both countries responsible. I think the that the United States has been foolish. I think we've all been foolish. We shoulda ..." and AS Trump says, "had this dialogue a long time".

Putin displays another Tongue-in-Cheek nonverbal as Trump is saying, "long time, frankly" (during 4:27:47 - 4:27:49).

Yet another Tongue-in-Cheek display is manifested by the Russian President as Trump says, "But, ah" (4:28:08 - 4:28:09).

And Putin displays a fourth Tongue-in-Cheek display as Trump is saying, "I think it's" (during 4:28:19).

In this context, a Tongue-in-Cheek display is a strong nonverbal indicator of the thought-emotions of "I Just Won" - or more colloquially, "I gotcha"! There's also a significant emotional tone of smugness projected with the Tongue-in Cheek dynamic.

During 4:28:05 - 4:28:07, just after Donald Trump says, "... whether it's nuclear proliferation in terms of stopping, we have to do it...", Vladimir Putin scratches the region just in front of his right ear.

When displayed by a person who is listening (here, Putin), this specific signal is highly indicative of hearing someone (Trump) say something with which they disagree - or something they believe to be an attempt at deception. Intriguingly, the number of scratches in front of the ear is virtually always four to six. Vladimir Putin scratches four times.

Just after Donald Trump says, "There was no collusion - at all" (during 4:28:25 and notated above with the Ω symbol), Putin's left eyebrow raises. This is a strong nonverbal signal that Putin does not believe Trump's statement.

In this context - when it's being displayed by the alleged co-conspirator - in real-time, during an active denial - this facial display is an absolute red flag. It's an air raid siren blaring six inches away.

Please watch this expression on the video to fully appreciate the dynamics and context of Putin's facial display.

If we pan-out the camera and look over at Donald Trump, we notice that Trump's hands are retracted posteriorly and withdrawn to the center of his body. They had previously been holding the sides of the lectern (toward the front). In this segment, he maintains this posture from 4:28:14 through 4:28:46 (notated by the ∆ symbol). The subjects about which Trump was speaking during this time include Robert Mueller's investigation, allegations of collusion, his 2016 presidential campaign, and Hillary Clinton.

Although we cannot see his hands directly they are either in a Fig Leaf configuration (also known as Genital Guarding) - or very nearly so.

The fig leaf is a particularly Beta body posture. When we see this dynamic change, it projects weakness and vulnerability to the subjects being discussed.

Moreover, when standing on stage with another person, the one displaying a fig-leaf is signaling his subordination. The American President feels he is Putin's subordinate.

SUMMARY: Analysis of Vladimir Putin in the above-described video segment of The Helsinki Summit, demonstrates that the Russian President's thought-feelings indicate that he strongly believes he has won the game he is playing with Trump. 

Alarmingly, this evaluation also shows that Putin believes that nuclear proliferation should NOT be curtailed - and/or he believes Trump is lying when Trump is saying this.

In addition, and of profound importance, Putin does NOT believe Trump's statement, "There was no collusion - at all". Because the alleged collusion on Trump's part would have to have been coordinated with and conducted by Putin and/or his surrogates, this finding nonverbally indicts both leaders.

Moreover, this nonverbal analysis also demonstrates that Donald Trump has significantly low confidence with regard to his 2016 campaign, the results of the Presidential Election, Hillary Clinton - and toward the investigation led by United States Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In addition, Trump himself feels that he is Putin's subordinate.

Body Language Analysis No. 4317: Scott Pruitt Confronted in Restaurant by Kristin Mink - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Scott Pruitt was recently confronted by Kristin Mink in a D.C. area restaurant. Ms. Mink is a sixth-grade teacher and mother. While holding her two-year-old son, she spoke briefly to the chief administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

What follows is a partial analysis of Scott Pruitt's nonverbal behavior.

Beginning at 0:00 Kristin Mink says to Scott Pruitt, “Hi. Ah, I just wanted to urge you to resign, um, for what you’re doing to the environment in our country. This is my son. He loves animals. He loves clean air. He loves clean water. Meanwhile, you’re slashing strong fuel standards for cars and trucks for the benefit of big corporations. Ah, you’ve been paying um, fifty bucks a night to stay in a D.C. condo that’s connected to an energy lobbying firm, while approving their dirty-sands pipeline. Um, we deserve to have somebody at the EPA who actually does protect our environment, somebody who believes in climate change and takes it seriously for the benefit of all of us, including our children. Um, so I would urge you to resign before your scandals push you out.”

During 0:07, just after Ms. Mink says, "... I just wanted to urge you to resign, um, for what you’re doing to the environment in our country...", Scott Pruitt displays a Tongue-in-Cheek nonverbal. In this context, a tongue-in-cheek sign is associated with smugness, arrogance, and the thought-emotions of "I won"/"I beat you"/"You just lost".

Please watch this video at regular and 1/2 speeds on a larger screen to more fully appreciate the dynamics of this behavior.

During 0:10, just after Kristin Mink says, "This is my son. He loves animals. He loves clean air.", Pruitt's mid-face takes on a display of Disgust. Note the momentary tightening of the area between his nose and upper lip (the mustache area) and the flaring of his right nostril (Because we can't fully view his left face from this angle, it's also possible that this expression is only present on his right side - and therefore is representative of Contempt).

Notice that Pruitt's right forehead muscles are contracted and elevated. Again, we cannot view his full left forehead, but if this dynamic is unilateral, it represents feelings of Disbelief/Incredulity (Because his center forehead muscles are not contracted, either this is indeed an incredulity tell [right side only] - or the EPA chief has undergone rather heavy Botox treatments of his mid-forehead).

During 0:17, we see Mr. Pruitt display a second, more overt, tongue-in-cheek display, just after Ms. Mink says, "... you’re slashing strong fuel standards for cars and trucks ...", This is representative of additional smugness, arrogance, and thought-emotions of "I won"/"I beat you"/"You just lost".

Simultaneously, Pruitt is also closing his eyes in a prolonged blink. This is a blocking behavior - his psyche is attempting to shut-out and distance himself from what he's witnessing/receiving.

At 0:25, just after Ms. Mink says, "... you’ve been paying um, fifty bucks a night to stay in a D.C. condo that’s connected to an energy lobbying firm ...", Scott Pruitt sits back, reorienting his torso farther from Kristin Mink in an additional attempt at distancing himself from her and the ramifications of her statements.

During 0:28 - 0:29, just after Ms. Mink says, "... while approving their dirty-sands pipeline ...", Scott Pruitt displays an amalgam of the emotions of Disgust, Bitterness, Regret, and Anger.

It's important to point out that, although the EPA Administrator's regret may be arising from several sources - the most obvious cause of Pruitt's regret in this moment is the fact that he's being confronted in public while being filmed.

After the 0:25 mark, Scott Pruitt covered his right hand with his left hand. In this context, this dynamic is symptomatic of his psyche trying to down-regulate his strong feelings. In addition, Pruitt's ring finger and middle finger can be seen repeatedly contracting and partially extending. His finger twitching is indicative of his anxiety and more specifically, his impatience for Ms. Mink to finish.

SUMMARY: EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt displayed smugness-arrogance, incredulity, disgust (and/or contempt), bitterness, regret, impatience, anxiety, and anger - while Kristin Mink confronted him in a D.C. area restaurant.

Body Language Analysis No. 4233: Donald Trump Regarding His Firing of Rex Tillerson - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday morning, President Trump fired Rex Tillerson. The US Secretary of State found out via Twitter. The video above features Donald Trump fielding questions from the press on the South Lawn of the White House later in the morning. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a few key moments of this exchange.

Beginning at 0:55, President Trump continues, "... and - as far as Rex - Tillerson is concerned - I very much appreciate his commitment and his service - and I wish him well. He's a good man Ω ."

Just after he says, "He's a good man", the President displays a classic expression of disgust (during 1:05). Note carefully his mouth configuration as well as the tension in his mid-face (mustache region) as well as flaring of his nostrils.

Although not a required component of disgust, his momentary eyelid tension and mildly increased eyelid closure are disgust amplifiers.

This moment is captured in the image immediately above.

Only a second later, during 1:06, Donald Trump displays a Tight Tongue Jut.

A tight tongue jut (not to be confused with a Loose Tongue Jut or a Wide Open Tongue Jut) projects feelings of Disgust, Disdain, and Repulsion.

In response to a journalist's question (beginning at 1:08), "Mr. President, what did you say to Rex Tillerson?"

Donald Trump answered, "Ah, Rex and I have been talking about this for a long time. Ah, we ∆ we, got along, actually, quite well §- but we disagreed on things..."

President Trump's fingers forward, palm-down, medial-to-lateral (moving outward) hand sweep (visible at the lower left-hand side of the screen), during 1:13, just after he says, "... Ah, we ...", is a dismissive gesture (Illustrator) and is contradictory to what he's about to say - "we, got along, actually, quite well ..."

During 1:16, just before he says, "... but we disagreed on things ...", President Trump displayed a quintessential Tongue-in-Cheek display. In this cluster-context, a tongue in cheek behavior indicates the Smug/Schadenfreude thought-emotion of I Just Won.

From a paralanguage/statement analysis perspective, the President's use of the word, "actually" (1:14 - 1:15) in this context is a back-peddling qualifier and a signal Trump is trying too hard to convince us. His Tongue-in-Cheek display, following only a second later is an example of paralanguage-nonverbal coupling/clustering.

Summary: Donald Trump's nonverbal behavior indicates he has disgust, disdain, and repulsion for Rex Tillerson. In addition, President Trump displays significant Smugness/Schadenfreude for his act of firing Secretary Tillerson - revealing Trump's behavior is not objectively driven, rather he's operating from a personal-motive reference frame.

During 1:48, just after Jason Momoa says, "... we don't need the trident 'til a little bit later. Next movie" - he pulls his upper and lower lip inward, covering his teeth - more prominently on his right side. Unfortunately, the camera cuts away quickly, so watch this dynamic several times at 1/2 and even 1/4 speed.

This nonverbal tell is a signal of "a Hesitancy to Disclose". Indeed, the proverbial "Tight-Lipped" display is a longstanding idiom - and it's believed to have been coined by William Shakespeare. The bard was a keen observer of human behavior.

Of course, Jason Momoa is not supposed to reveal much about the plot of his next film (Aquaman due to be released in December of 2018) - however, among fans of the genre, it's no secret that his Trident will play a key role. There are other plot secrets he's keeping - and his concealment of these secrets are what caused Mamoa's expression.

This particular example of a Tight-Lipped display also has additional components of:

• a Suppressed Smile (concealing joy-happiness)
• a hint of a Tongue-in-Cheek display (I just won, Smugness of Victory)

These additional two elements further telegraph not only Jason's feelings of holding a secret - but also the actor's excitement - that he believes the film is sure to be a smashing success.

Of course, these emotions of Momoa's are not at all surprising - and if we were in Jason shoes (fins) we would no doubt feel similarly. It's profoundly important to stress, however, that the tight lip display is typically much more clandestine. In the everyday world - in business or in one's personal life - when this is displayed (with or without a tongue-in-cheek or a suppressed smile component) - the vast majority of the time it is completely missed. How many times have you been blind to this tell?

Body Language Analysis No. 4104: Walter Cronkite Reaction to JFK Assassination - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, under President Trump's direction, the US Federal Government released thousands of previously classified documents pertaining to the investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Some of the documents which were to be released are being held back pending further review and will possibly be made available to the public in April 2018. This last-minute change came in response to requests made by the FBI, CIA, and other intelligence agencies.

Although the majority of Americans weren't yet born or old enough to remember President Kennedy's assassination, those who watched the news that day have the events forever etched in their memory. Walter Cronkite was an American broadcast journalist and anchorman at CBS Evening News from 1962 - 1981. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Walter Cronkite's live broadcast reaction on 22 November 1963 to President Kennedy's death.

During 1:11 in the above video, as he is handed the news of Kennedy's death, Mr. Cronkite scratches his mustache area. Facial touching is a universal signal of anxiety, and more specifically, this signals Cronkite's disbelief. While his logical brain knows what's occurred, his emotional brain has yet to fully process the events of the day.

After putting his glasses on only eight seconds before, Walter Cronkite removes them again (1:19). This action is a subconscious stalling maneuver, giving the psyche additional time to process the emotional news. The glasses also act as an extension of the body, and thus touching them serves as a MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) and a tactile outlet for his anxiety.

As Cronkite begins to put his glasses back on (1:26) his jaw thrusts forward (an adrenaline surge) as the corners of his mouth vector laterally with a tightening of his mouth/lips in a classic expression of bitterness and regret.

Here we see Walter display a "Tight Tongue Jut" in a display of strong Disdain and Disgust (1:27). This is a signal of his mind emotionally rejecting the event.

His jaw then tightens dramatically during another adrenaline surge in an effort to suppress his tears (1:29).

A Tongue-In-Cheek is a common nonverbal maneuver to dampen tears and/or prevent an expression of sadness and crying (1:31).

His voice cracks as he says, "... Vice President Johnson ...", and Cronkite then clears his throat (1:33).

Cronkite then adjusts his glasses before removing them once again (1:36) - an additional attempt at down-regulating his anxiety.

As he says, "... thirty-sixth President ...", Mr. Cronkite blinks rapidly in a common display of anxiety (1:46).

Summary: Even with skilled professionals, suppressing strong emotions is almost impossible - and then only for very short durations. Signals always "leak" through. In this situation with Walter Cronkite, with our 20/20 "retrospectroscopes", it's easy for most people to see his nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage signals. In our everyday worlds', these are just as detectable - if you know the tells.
