Body Language Analysis No. 4208: Rod Rosenstein and the Indictment of Russians - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Friday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein gave a brief press conference wherein he announced indictments of 13 Russian nationals and three Russian organizations for interfering with the 2016 US elections.

From a body language perspective, Deputy AG Rosenstein provided many teaching examples during his presser. One nonverbal signal which few people ever notice - and even less interpret correctly is discussed here.

Beginning at 4:01, Deputy AG Rosenstein continues, "On September thirteenth of 2017, soon after the news media reported that the special counsel’s office was investigating evidence that Russian operatives had used social media to interfere with the 2016 election, one defendant allegedly wrote - quote [sic] We had a slight crisis here at work. The FBI busted our activity. So I got preoccupied with covering tracks Ω  together with my colleagues - end-quote [sic] §"

At five different times (4:01- 4:02, 4:14 - 4:14, 4:16, 4:24 - 4:25, 4:29) during this one particular paragraph, Deputy AG Rosenstein bounces briefly up on his toes. Please watch the video several times at regular speed and at half speed to fully appreciate this dynamic.

This up-on-toes body language dynamic betrays a momentary surge in his adrenaline - which is occurring secondary his emotional excitation. These signals are both subtle and evanescent - and they're very often missed in everyday interactions - yet they tell us the emotional tone Rod Rosenstein is thinking-feeling in these moments.

Summary: Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was experiencing an adrenaline surge during his press conference on Friday. He was excited and has a high degree of confidence for success. In short, this signal is indicative of Rosenstein-Swagger. Yet he did not, however, reveal all his chess moves (well ... not all verbally).

Body Language Analysis No. 3995: Vladimir Putin, Emmanuel Macron, and the G20 Group Photo - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Emmanuel Macron's desire to stand in the front row, next to Donald Trump - and to be the center of attention during the group photo at the 2017 G20 summit made for an entertaining and viral video.

And yet, if you look elsewhere in this group there are several less flamboyant but more telling nonverbal signals on Vladimir Putin (for his are subconsciously driven).

Note the details on Vladimir Putin's face (lower left) - it is one of his default expressions. His central forehead is contracted and elevated (an "Elevated CFC") along with his inner (medial) eyebrows. Simultaneously the outer (later) portions of his eyebrows are vectored downward - AND his upper eyelids are significantly partially closed. If you were unfamiliar with the Russian President, you may think his upper lids were passively "droopy" (medically known as "ptosis") - yet you'd be wrong. This is a dynamic change.

Try configuring your own face in this same manner right now - it's difficult to do voluntarily (yet we all occasionally make this expression unconsciously). Trying to replicate this feels unnatural - for the two adjacent tissues (the central forehead/inner eyebrows - and the upper eyelids/lateral eyebrows) are pulling in opposite directions.

This nonverbal cluster is indicative of disbelief, arrogance, contempt - and yet it's an expression that many have difficulty recognizing (Note that all three of these emotions may be associated via other facial patterns).

In this close-up, cropped view of the same image - a partially suppressed smile can be seen.

We all occasionally exhibit the facial cluster combination of:
  • An Elevated Central Forehead Contraction along with
  • A Partially Suppressed Mouth Smile
Yet those who make this expression frequently have a very high correlation with antisocial personality disorder - known in more common colloquial, as a sociopath (Although it's also important to note that not all sociopaths will make this expression frequently).

While not a required component for in this particular pattern of behavior - this intensity of this expression is amplified by the additional component of the partial upper eyelid closure.

Another intriguing detail is exhibited by Vladimir Putin in this video is his stance (he is fourth from the right, in the front row). His feet are placed further apart than any other leader visible. The wider distance between his feet is even more significant due to Putin's relatively short stature. This is an alpha (even hyper-alpha) positioning. It's over-compensatory nonverbal behavior.

Now watch the video again. During 1:15, just after Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel exchange a few words, Putin elevates up on his toes for a split second. This dynamic is indicative of an adrenaline surge - and may be seen during positive emotions (e.g., excitement, joy, etc.) - but also during some negative emotions (e.g., anxiety).

Body Language Analysis No. 3955: Jeff Sessions, Russia, and Sergey Kislyak - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Before Donald Trump fired James Comey, Senators Patrick Leahy and Al Franken had asked the FBI to investigate Jeff Sessions for possible perjury pertaining to Sessions' alleged undisclosed contact/meetings with the Russian Ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

The video above, and the discussion below, sheds some needed nonverbal light on Sessions. What follows is analysis:

Beginning at 0:44 in the above video, Jeff Session says, "I never had meetings, with Russian operatives, or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign ..."

During 0:46 - 0:47, as he says,"Russian operatives" - Sessions shifts his weight rapidly from side-to-side (to his left, then back to his right). Then, just a few seconds later, during 0:49 - 0:50, as he says, "intermediaries", the US Attorney General elevates quickly up-and-down on his toes.

Both of these nonverbal actions are highly indicative of adrenaline surges which accompany anxiety. However, when viewed in the context of this crucial, high-ramification denial declarative, their presence dramatically increases the probability that deception has occurred.

Please view the video as still images don't capture the dynamics and the subtlety of movement.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3895: Donald Trump Walks Out of Oval Office without signing Executive Orders - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Friday, President Trump exited the oval office before signing executive orders for which he just gave a short speech. The focus of the orders is his effort to lower the US trade deficit. He signed them in private later that day.

Contrary to popular reports that Donald Trump left the room in response to a question regarding Michael Flynn, he was well on his way to the exit before the nature of the question was discernible.

After the Vice President chased down his boss, President Trump spoke [inaudible] and motioned for him to follow (and presumably to bring the forgotten orders).

From a nonverbal standpoint, there were two particular signals which jump out in this short video.

Donald Trump (continuing at 1:15): "...but these voiceless Americans, now have a voice in the White House. Under my administration, the theft of American prosperity will end..."

During 1:20 - 1:22, as he says, "... Under my administration ...", notice how Trump's head and shoulders elevate. This is, of course, because he momentarily elevates up on his toes. Such a body language signals telegraphs a heightened adrenaline state and excitation coincident with these crucial words. Although it's somewhat subtle and evanescent, this nonverbal tell is quite profound - and it's very often missed in everyday interactions.

This "Up on Toes" nonverbal signal must be viewed in the context of the video, as still images do not capture its dynamic.

Later in the video, after Mike Pence turns around to retrieve the orders, his facial expression rapidly changes.

In this close up, we can see the Vice President's expression is an amalgam of:

Bitter-Regret: The corners of the mouth pulled laterally (outward) and also down with significant mid-facial tension

Anger: Jaw jut with nostril flaring as well as mid-facial tension

Frustration: The forward bulging of the area just below his lower lip

Summary: Donald Trump attaches a significant level of importance, excitement, and ownership to "his" administration.

Mike Pence was in a moment of bitter-regret, anger, and frustration when he was sent back into the Oval Office to retrieve the Executive Orders which Donald Trump had forgotten to sign.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3861: Emma Stone, The Oscars and Sincerity - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

At the time of this writing, the 2017 Academy Awards have already begun. It's an hour or so before we know if Emma Stone will win an Oscar for "Best Actress in a Leading Role" for her portrayal of Mia Dolan in the film La La Land.

During this recent interview with Lee Cowan, Ms. Stone displays several excellent body language signals.

In the image above, Emma is reunited with a childhood mentor, Bobb Cooper of the Valley Youth Theater in Phoenix. Notice that during their hug, although Ms. Stone is not much shorter than Mr. Cooper, when she hugs him, she elevates up on her toes - with both feet - for an extended period of time. Although, of course, such toe elevation during a hug is not at all required for a sincerity to be present - we can be sure that when it is performed bilaterally (that is, with both feet) and for an extended time, it indeed is a signal that high sincerity and true affection are being experienced (and projected).

In this next image, Ms. Stone and Mr. Cowan are fairly closely mirroring each other. We cannot see most of Cowan's hands - but we can see much of Emma's. She is displaying a good example of an "Alpha-Beta Hybrid". As the categorical name implies, these are a class of nonverbal behaviors which are not too alpha - not too beta, but somewhere intermediate. To slice it even thinner, this particular alpha-beta hybrid is a bit closer to the alpha end of the scale (but certainly not "Hyper-Alpha).

Much of the time when the hands are positioned in the pockets - it does project a beta and sometimes submissive/low confidence emotional tone. Depending on the dynamics, the coexisting verbal cues and the other nonverbal signals with which it may be clustered - hands in the pockets can even be a signal for deception. Yet these examples don't apply to Stone in this scenario - for only her fingers on her right hand (and slightly more on her left) are in her pockets. Moreover, these are her front pockets - allowing a more assertive variation of an "Arms Akimbo" configuration. Her elbows, which are protruding laterally - but not excessively so, is an alpha quality.

Notice too, each of Emma's thumbs are hooked in her belt loops. This is a stronger alpha component adding to this body language cluster, and indeed contains a significant element of sexuality (not for her interviewer, rather that she is "on camera", being herself - rather than a character. This feeling of being "on display", given the right setting and situation, can make a person feel confident and sexy.

This last image is on the set of Saturday Night Live (which Stone has hosted on three occasions). Her "Thumbs Forward Arms Akimbo" is another example of an Alpha-Beta Hybrid body language display. When the thumbs are positioned forward (and thus the palms are directed up), it projects a confident, open-minded and supportive emotional tone. Depending on the other nonverbal signals present, there may also be an inquisitive component present too.

Good Luck Emma Stone!

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3640: Khizr Khan’s DNC Speech, Donald Trump & Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In many hearts and minds, it was the most moving moment of either convention. With his wife by his side, Khizr Khan gave an extremely heartfelt speech regarding their son, Humayun Khan, who was a captain in the United State Army - and who, on 8 June 2004, sacrificed his own life to save his fellow soldiers.

This is a partial nonverbal analysis of Khizr Khan's of speech.

One thing you may notice, is that Mr. Khan very frequently rose up on his toes. This dynamic is but one example of a multitude of body language signals termed "Illustrators". An illustrator serves to punctuate, emphasize, underline, etc., the spoken words, vocal qualities (paralanguage) as well as other simultaneous (or nearly so) nonverbal signals. In this context, rising up on his toes (although we could not see his feet, this is very evident) gives the effect of an exclamation point. Please watch this speech to more fully appreciate this "up on toes" body language.

Mr. Khan also pointed with his (right) index finger (forefinger) repeatedly. While the vast majority of times this illustrator should never be used, there were many exceptions in this speech. Why? Because Khizr Khan lost his son defending America and he was, in effect, talking to Trump much of the time. He was taking Trump to task - and taking Trump to school - teaching him the United States Constitution and its very real ramifications.

Several times Mr. Khan places his hand over his heart. It's profoundly important to recognize the detail of his palm making full contact with his chest. This is know as "palmar contact" - and it's a nonverbal signal indicative of high sincerity.

Often time people with stop short and do not touch their chest. Other times just the finger tips (and NOT the palm) will touch. Sometimes people use their non-dominant hand (Mr. Khan indeed used his right and dominant hand). And intriguingly, there are even times when people will gesture to the left side of the chest (where, there IS NO HEART). These variations (which are not seen here) are examples are signals of insincerity. Mr. Khan's full palmar touch is very sincere and "heartfelt".

The highlight of Mr. Khan's entire speech was when he said, "Donald Trump, you're asking Americans to trust you with their future.  Let me ask you: have you even read the United States constitution? [he pulls it out] I will, I will gladly lend you my copy. In this document, look for the words 'liberty' and 'equal protection of law' ..."

Khizr Khan did many things right in this moment. First produced a physical copy of the US Constitution. This moment would still have had a strong effect if he had not done so, but pulling it out of his pocket was such a powerful nonverbal metaphor for freedom and the United States - that this act cannot be overstated.

He also lifted it high (over his head) with his dominant hand and waving it - offering to lend it to Donald Trump. These maneuvers served to further potentiate the presence of constitution, the country, the election and the power of this moment. Mr. Khan choreographed the exact second of the constitutional display nearly perfectly (however, one could make the argument that saving this for the very end of his speech would have been even more powerful).

No one knows what the next 101 days will hold, but if Donald Trump loses, many will point to the moment Khizr Khan took the Constitution from his pocket as the tipping point.

On Thursday Humayun Khan, a citizen of the United States and U.S. Army captain, cast his vote.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3339: First Democratic Presidential Debate - Jim Webb's Proud of Making this Enemy - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Tonight's Democratic Presidential Debate offered up many body language teaching moments. What follows is an examination of but one of these - very commonly seen yet often misinterpreted.

In this video segment, Anderson Cooper asked the five candidates, "Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said, 'I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made'. You've all made a few people upset over your political careers - which enemy are you most proud of?"

When it was Jim Webb's turn, the former Virginia Senator answered, "I'd have to say the enemy soldier that threw the grenade that wounded me - but he's not around right now to - talk to." (Note Jim Webb is a recipient of the Navy Cross for actions of bravery in the Vietnam War which he, in part, alludes to here).

During his answer, Senator Webb repeatedly elevates up on his toes (please view the video to fully appreciate this dynamic signal). This nonverbal sign tells us the former Secretary of the Navy is quite proud of his response. He feels he has slam-dunked this answer. Elevating up on one's toes can be thought of as a subconsciously generated "energy-bleeder" - wherein the psyche is attempting to release adrenaline (and its effects) and although it has a component of "good nervousness" associated with it - this body language tell is primarily indicative of joy, optimism, excitement and pride.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3305: Weatherman Liam Dutton nails pronouncing Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

How many people can pronounce "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" properly? .... And how could you tell if they got it wrong?

In this recently viral video, Meteorologist Liam Dutton nails a most difficult pronunciation of a Welsh village - and to the observant among us - we can also see an interesting and valuable body language display.

Just as the weatherman says the last syllable of the lengthy town, you can see Mr. Dutton elevate subtly (0:14 second mark) and once again with greater height during 0:15 (as he says, " ... temperature got to 21 Celsius ..."). Although we can't see them directly, we know he's elevating up on his toes. This nonverbal display is often seen during times of anxiety - yet most of the time this is of a positive variety, e.g. with excitement, pride, joy, optimism, etc. Dutton is very pleased with himself that he pulled this off - and of course he doesn't say so with words - yet his body language tells us he's proud.

This act of this toe elevation is subconsciously initiated and is one example of an "energy bleeder" which helps to dampen the expression of other nonverbal signals which he may not want to display.

What other subtle nonverbal tells us Liam Dutton is happy with his performance?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3219: "Slow Jam the News" with Jeb Bush, Jimmy Fallon and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It's almost difficult to watch - yet funny - Jeb Bush is the latest to "Slow Jam" with Jimmy Fallon. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the former Florida Governor.

Beginning at 3:24 Jimmy Fallon asks Jeb Bush to explain his stance on immigration. Governor Bush first explains his response in English - during which his forehead only contracts for a split second (when he says, " ... Jimmy ..."). However when he "translates" (a word he should have not have used for in this context it is demeaning and condescending) to Spanish - the entire width of his forehead remains contracted for the duration. This tells us definitively that although the Republican nominee hopeful can speak the language well - something is amiss. His words are theoretically "the same" (After all he translated it, didn't he?) - however his change in body language lets us know his emotional tone is significantly different. He feels different. Bush's nonverbal disparity should not be ignored (to the voters nor unto himself). Jeb is either uncomfortable either speaking Spanish, is trying to project a disproportionate emphasis (and an example of a body language "illustrator") to this voting demographic (e.g. pandering) - or has anxiety speaking regarding this subject to this voting demographic.

Overall however, in the vast majority of his interviews and speeches, Bush's forehead remains relaxed and uncontracted the majority of the time (so far in this campaign at least). This is a rare nonverbal pattern in politician population - and it's also a quality that's indicative of a high sincerity quotient.

Through this Slow Jam video, Bush can be seen in the background (out of focus of course) repeatedly sitting up in his chair - even bouncing (or in this context and from a body language aspect - similar to if he were standing and elevating up on his toes). This "bouncing" in this context is "a nervous energy bleeder" and also acts to suppresses Jeb's own laughter (he's trying to maintain as straight face). Another person may very well use an "Inward Lip Roll" in this same setting to suppress their laughter.

The possible third President Bush also displays multiple "Hard Swallows" throughout this video - which a highly reliable indicator for generalized anxiety (Here clearly seen at 1:20).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2623: Kim Jong-un Impersonator - A Valuable Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

An Australian musician, who goes by "Howard" (and as yet has not disclosed a last name) recently created a buzz in Hong Kong, where he is dressed and was made-up in detail as Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea. Perhaps a good PR stunt, at least initially, Howard has made a bit of a name for himself.

In the brief interview included in the above video, Howard displays a valuable body language tell. Although we cannot see his feet, during the 0:23 - 0:24 segment, the impersonator goes "Up on his Toes" as he says, "... get dressed up and do some gigs with it ..." (Do not confuse this with the just preceding shoulder-shrugging). Although on some occasions this nonverbal signal can indicate an alpha emotional tone, in this case of the "Kimpersonator" and most other times, it signals excitement. It is one way the human body "bleeds out" excessive energy associated with these pleasant, high-energy (and high-adrenaline) states.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2367:
North Korea, Jay Carney and
Body Language Tells from the White House Press Room

Yesterday Jay Carney downplayed the possibility that North Korea has any capability of deploying a nuclear warhead on a ballistic missile. In this video the While House Press Secretary is displaying body language clusters of high confidence and the belief that he is in the right. He is the senior person in the room and he knows it. He is the alpha dog.

At two times in this video (0:00 - 0:03 and 1:21 - 1:24) he shows us the pseudo-prayer. This high alpha display is amplified by additional up and down chopping motion. These displays are relatively brief (3 seconds each) and it should always be so (3 seconds is even too long), lest they have the opposite effect and backfire - projecting arrogance and a patronizing mindset.

At several times Mr. Carney goes up on his toes (e.g., 0:05, 0:13, etc.). Although in other contexts it indicates joy-happiness, in this cluster context it signifies a very high level of confidence. More Alpha behavior. It is helpful to think of these nonverbals as body language exclamation points.

Exaggerated mouth movements, above and beyond what is normally needed to pronounce words is also a common signal of over-alpha behavior. Jay Carney exemplifies this multiple times (e.g., 0:02, 0:24, 0:43, etc.).

The pseudo-prayer with hand chop, the up on toes maneuver and the exaggerated pronunciation mouth movements are all nonverbals seen in the context of high alpha personalities - when they are the most powerful one in the room or immediate area. However, if Barack Obama walked in, despite having no change in his stance on the issues at hand, Carney - then would suddenly become a junior-alpha and thus would not display any of these characteristic body language tells.

Multiple other great nonverbal tells were displayed in the White House Press Room yesterday. Did you spot the microexpression of empathy Jay Carney projected towards the North Korean people at 1:55 - with a very brief central forehead contraction (CFC) clustered with a slight frown? How about several contempt displays (one of these was particularly atypical)?
