Body Language Analysis No. 4343: Idris Elba, Kate Winslet, Anxiety, and Empathy - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (Video, Photos)

Idris Elba is by most all accounts, an excellent actor. But despite many accolades and awards, Idris, is of course, only human. During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, he experienced a very human moment - and displayed a classic nonverbal tell.

Just after Graham Norton says, "... a-, but we have to say, it was a-, your American accent has not always been - that good."

As Idris says, "Mm-hmm, mm-hmm", he sucks his cheeks inward (1:06). Often times this MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) involves biting the insides of one's cheeks with a mild-to-moderate degree of force. This cheek-biting indicates significant anxiety.

It's important to note that this dynamic of biting the inner cheeks has the effect of pursing the lips forward - but this is a secondary effect - and does not carry the same meaning of a primary forward lip purse. Be careful not to mistake the two expressions.

A second later, his central forehead is contracted and elevated (along with his inner eyebrows). Mr. Elba's central face has grown tense. His nostrils are flared. Simultaneous with his inner cheek biting, Idris' lips take on an additional slightly sad configuration.

Kate Winslet then displays a bilateral full palm-of-hand (full palmar) contact with her upper sternum/heart region as well as her lower sternum as she says, "My insides ...".

Her nonverbal signal indicates both elevated empathy and high sincerity.

As she finishes her sentence, "... are constricting for you right now", Ms. Winslet, also physically constricts her fists.

SUMMARY: Despite being outstanding actors, when Idris Elba and Kate Winslet are not in-character (and just being themselves), their body language gives us glimpses into their psyches.

Idris Elba was experiencing significant anxiety which elicited similar feelings in Kate Winslet. Ms. Winslet displays considerable empathy and sincerity toward Mr. Elba.

Body Language Analysis No. 4284: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Deadpool 2, and Alpha Up-Regulation - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Josh Brolin and Ryan Reynolds were recently guests of Graham Norton on his show while promoting their recent film Deadpool 2. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Brolin - concentrating on three different examples of Alpha Up-regulatory Behavior.

The need for Alpha up-regulation - sometimes more colloquially referred to as Dialing-up one's Alpha emotions - are behaviors which are seen when a person, who already possesses alpha qualities is experiencing a burst of anxiety. Yet they're not ready to retreat, escape, or acquiesce - rather, they are attempting to accentuate and reestablish their confidence, courage, and assertiveness.

The Butt Adjustment is a common Alpha Up-regulating nonverbal signal. This example (which can be seen during 0:25 - 0:26) is quite typical. First, there's a leaning forward - temporarily lifting one's derrière off the chair/coach, etc. - and then moving slightly backward before fulling sitting down once again.

During 0:29 - 0:30, Josh Brolin rubs the lateral aspect of his right thigh. This is another tell that a person is trying to step up to the proverbial plate, while simultaneously trying to overcome feelings of significant anxiety.

Although we can't see specifically what his left hand is doing during 2:56 - 2:57, with high probability Mr. Brolin is pulling up his left sock and/or scratching the lateral portion of his left lower leg. Both are additional signals of attempting to dialing-up one's alpha emotions despite an anxiety event.

SUMMARY: Fully recognizing when another person feels less confident - and then observing them as they attempt to increase their confidence - and noting whether they achieve it (or not) - is a fundamental body language skill. Most people completely misinterpret, ignore, or fail to notice these signals.

Body Language Analysis No. 4167: Gary Oldman, Hugh Jackman, and Compliments - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Gary Oldman was recently a guest on The Graham Norton Show promoting his just-released film, Darkest Hour - in which he plays Winston Churchill.  Many feel Mr. Oldman is one of the most skilled actors ever. He's also been called, "The Greatest Actor Yet to Win an Oscar".

Hugh Jackman certainly has great admiration for him - and he gives Oldman a great compliment in the clip included above.

Note Oldman's seating posture (immediately above) prior to Jackman's compliment - his legs were positioned in an alpha-beta hybrid configuration (feet flat on the floor with his upper legs angled slightly wider than parallel - while his knees are approximately his shoulder's width apart).

In this second image, Jackman has just begun addressing Oldman - and as Oldman is beginning to sense a compliment coming his way - his legs are drawing significantly closer - and are now parallel. The actor's knees are approximately 2/3 of his shoulder's width apart.

After Hugh Jackman praises Gary Oldman, Oldman's knees angle inward (almost touching) and his hands are placed together, palm to palm, in between his distal thighs and knees.

Summary: Gary Oldman's dynamic display of bringing his legs closer together - while repositioning his hands palm-to-palm between his legs/knees, demonstrated that he was humbled, unpretentious, and even shy upon receiving Hugh Jackman's compliment. Despite the fact he is one of the finest actors ever, when he wasn't acting - when "Gary was just being Gary" - his sincerity showed.

Body Language Analysis No. 4162: Is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Going to Run for President in 2020? - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the June 2016 British edition of GQ, Dwayne Johnson said, "I’ll be honest, I haven’t ruled politics out. I’m not being coy when I say that, but at the moment I am not sure. I can’t deny that the thought of being governor, the thought of being president, is alluring. And beyond that, it would be an opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives on a global scale. But there are a lot of other things I want to do first."

In July 2016, Johnson was interviewed by ABC News where he said, "The idea of me being president one day has become a legit thing to some people. If it is an overwhelming positive strong, ‘We want you to run for President’ [sentiment] and if I felt that I could step up to the plate and become a tremendous leader and make a real difference and make change, I would do it."

Dwayne Johnson was recently a guest on The Graham Norton Show. During the show, Norton brought up his possible bid for the US Presidency in 2020.

The following discussion is a partial nonverbal analysis of this interaction on Norton's Show.

GRAHAM NORTON: A, now I have to say - talking of crowds cheering - and the rumors are - the rumors are - Dwayne Johnson - President - 2020.

DWAYNE JOHNSON [beginning during 0:08]: Ahhh, wow, [inaudible]

AUDIENCE: Loud cheering

Within a few seconds, we see a series of nonverbal displays ...

As Mr. Johnson says, "Ahhh, wow, [inaudible]", he:

• Nods up-and-down
• Displays a Sincere Smile
• Blushes
• Looks Down to His Right
• After about 3 seconds, he then briefly shakes his head side-to-side (during 0:11)
• It's difficult to hear what he says after "Ahhh, wow",
however, it sounds like he says "yeah" - albeit quietly.

(Please watch this portion of the video at regular and 1/2 speed, as the dynamic nature of these displays are not all able to be captured in with still image)

We see here an interesting juxtaposition of first, an up-and-down head nod - followed shortly thereafter by a side-to-side head shake. While the up-and-down dynamic is a reliable signal of an acknowledgment (also because it was immediate) - the side-to-side motion, particularly with his sincere smile, blushing, looking down to his right (betraying a highly emotional context) - signal joyous-overwhelm-disbelief. This side-to-side nonverbal display is extremely common and often confused with a "no" signal (e.g., With winners of talent shows, contests, etc.).

During 0:11 - 0:12, The Rock pinches his left pinky finger with the thumb and forefinger of his right hand. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is a nonspecific anxiety display.

During 0:12 - 0:15, Dwayne Johnson reaches for his drink. Reaching for and/or then taking a drink are often seen as stalling techniques - although these are usually subconsciously initiated.

During 0:16, Dwayne Johnson:

• Straightens his jacket
• Sits in a wider seated-crotch display than he been doing only a few seconds earlier
• Broadens his shoulders/Flexes His chest
• Tilts back (extends) his head and neck

These are all Alpha-Upregulating behaviors - and this cluster is commonly seen in seen with alpha males - who are in the midst of a need to further "dial-up" their alpha emotions. This combination would be very rare during deception - particularly in such a public arena and concerning a topic with profound ramifications.

During 0:18, The Rock flicks his wrist in a watch-adjustment maneuver. This is another alpha-upregulating behavior. This would also be quite rare behavior during a lie.

Johnson then evades answering the Presidential question as he launches into a story. During 0:33 the Rock misspeaks as he says, "... this guy to my right ..." while pointing at Kevin Hart, who is seated at his left.

Summary: Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's nonverbal, paralanguage, and verbal behavior during this video all indicate he is seriously considering a run for the US Presidency in 2020.

Body Language Analysis No. 4056: Ed Sheeran and a Hesitancy to Disclose - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ed Sheeran's recent guest appearance on The Graham Norton Show has hilarious comedic value - and dozens of dozens of excellent nonverbal teaching examples also make it worth your while.

Mr. Sheeran's sincerity quotient is significantly higher than average - especially when compared with most celebrities.

At multiple times during this interview, Mr. Sheeran displayed "Knee Pulling" also known as "Hamstring Dissonance". As this second synonym implies - this behavior is a nonverbal equivalent of "I want to tell you, but I don't want to tell you" or "I have excitement but anxiety too".

During this exchange (seen with nearly all of Graham Norton's guests), Ed Sheeran speaks of several embarrassing events. His hesitancy to share these stories it's quite understandable - particularly in such a public setting. Hamstring dissonance is an under-appreciated nonverbal behavior, for it signals conflicting emotions which, in the everyday world (and UNLIKE Sheehan does here) - are usually NOT conveyed verbally. Thus hamstring dissonance is a profoundly valuable tell which will allow you to know others' thoughts and emotions.

In this moment Sheehan pulls his leg up so much that his foot is resting on the coach - which further signals his hesitancy and greater beta emotions.

A similar signal - also quite beta - is tucking one's hands beneath the thigh or "under the knee". In this setting, Ed Sheeran does not really want to tell us that, as a grown man, he bought a Lego set just for himself.

Now contrast Ed Sheeran with Matthew McConaughey - who is sitting in a "Figure Four" (projecting hyper-alpha feelings) with his fingers intertwined (impatience and critical evaluation). Now nuance further how each man's legs are folded - McConaughey's above of his other leg (alpha) - while Sheeran's crossed leg is beneath it's opposite (beta). We may indeed like both men, and they are each be excellent at their craft - yet one is dominant (and confident), while the other is acquiescing (and embarrassed).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3860: Ian McKellen, The Oscars and a spot-on Maggie Smith Impression - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Sir Ian McKellen recounted a story involving Dame Maggie Smith at the 2002 Oscars. That year, he had been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gandalf in the 2001 film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

As Norton was asking - and McKellan was anticipating his question (seen during the 0:09 - 0:10 portion of the video), the actor displayed a particular facial expression known as a "Lateral Lip Purse". Although extremely common, it's very rarely discussed in the nonverbal literature.

It's crucial to note that the remainder of his face is relaxed and neutral. For if there are other nonverbal signals accompanying the lateral lip purse - especially involving the eyes/eyelids - it has an entirely different meaning.

Moreover, be careful not to confuse this with a "Forward Lip Purse" (as the name suggests, with the lips protruding forward, rather to one side) - as it too projects a very distinctive and different set of thought-emotions.

This example of a lateral lip purse is quite classic, however, the camera angle does not afford an optimal view. If McKellan were looking straight at the camera it would have been better for teaching purposes - yet after careful observation one can discern his lips are vectored strongly to his right.

A lateral lip purse (with the remainder of the face neutral) is a signal of open, non-secretive decision making. The easiest place to see this expression is at a restaurant - while the patrons are perusing their menus'.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3801: Marion Cotillard, Lip Syncing and Honest Anxiety - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During Marion Cotilliard's recent guest appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the accomplished actor was asked to lip sync a portion of Non, je ne regrette rien. Perhaps you were fooled into believing (as were many others) that she truly sang it during her Academy Award winning performance (Best Actress 2007) as Édith Piaf in La Vie en rose.

As she did not anticipate Norton's request (2:15 in the video above), Ms. Cotilliard felt unprepared and she responded with, "Oh shit". Immediately after this she reached up with her left hand and scratched the right side of her forehead.

This is an excellent example of a nonverbal signal for "Honest Anxiety". That is to say, when you see this body language displayed, you can be certain that the person doing so is feeling anxiety - and in addition, there's a very low probability they are attempting deception.

If Marion would have not reached across her forehead - and instead scratched on the same side, this would have indicated a relatively lower level of nervousness.

There are many different nonverbal displays indicative of honest anxiety. Can you name any others? How does one differentiate these from deception-related nervousness?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3771: Tom Hanks Reenacts Iconic Forrest Gump Scene - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his recent guest appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Tom Hanks was asked to re-enact one of his more well-remembered scenes from his Oscar Winning performance in Forrest Gump (Hanks also received another best actor Oscar in the film Philadelphia).

From a body language perspective, it's profoundly illustrative to observe such skilled actors when they're "just being themselves" - and this example is no exception.

When Graham Norton asks him to re-enact the line from the film Forrest Gump - Tom Hanks (Sitting next to Mo Farah) immediately (and very briefly) touches his right eye with his right hand (2:21) as he squeezes his right thigh with his left hand (lasting about 2-3 seconds), an instant before he says "I would - be happy to do it, but you must show the lady with the cue card - because otherwise people will think I've actually memorized this so ...."

Hanks then proceeds to squeeze his left thigh for a longer duration.

Real-life often has a mixing of several simultaneous emotions. When Mr. Hanks touched his right eye, this was (subconsciously) signaling his telling of a little lie ("I would - be happy to do it ...") - but also at the same time, he was feeling anxiety about the act of delivering the line - thus his thigh squeezing.

Although professional actors "pretend for a living" (lying within the social contract of acting) - they're of course only human. Therefore their true selves (true emotions) are constantly "leaking" through - and are easily seen - if you know what to look for. The same is true in the every day world (for the other 99.99% who are not nearly as skilled as Hanks) - and their deception signals also leak through and are easily spotted - if you know what to look for.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3763: Matt Smith, Claire Foy and Where NOT to be stung by a Wasp - Body Language, Emotional Intelligence and Predicting Empathy (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

As usual, drinking milk (or anything) while watching The Graham Norton's Show is definitely NOT recommended (lest it exit through your nose). This episode with David Attenborough, Claire Foy and Matt Smith was no exception.

Graham Norton asked Matt Smith to tell of his encounter with a certain wasp. Smith then told his story of how he was stung on his "nackers" whilst in the midst of sex.

The image below (from 2:39 in the video) was taken during the one of the multiple comedic climaxes. Note that Ms. Foy has both hands on her face - and Mr. Smith, with his hands covering his face, is in a somewhat similar position. While there is certainly a significant component of embarrassment present in this moment (e.g., both are blushing - and Smith's eye contact has momentarily dropped to zero) - this is also another profoundly important nonverbal predictor of future (and past) behavior conveyed here.

When recalling, witnessing, hearing, etc., a story with a significant emotional component (here pain, embarrassment and humor) - those individuals who cover their faces (usually with hands however sometimes with the arm, a hat, etc.) have both higher empathy quotients as well as higher sincerity quotients. Thus this behavior does not only tell us about real-time emotions - but it's also an accurate predictor of these overall personality traits.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3741: Bryan Cranston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Weddings and Tears - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In their recent guest appearances on The Graham Norton Show, both Bryan Cranston and Benedict Cumberbatch recounted stories of performing wedding ceremonies. Cranston's marital memories were truly hilarious - and also precipitated a common, yet rarely discussed, nonverbal signal.

During 5:35 to 5:36 in the above video, as Bryan Cranston is telling his tale - he wipes tears from his eyes. Note that this wiping is conducted with the palms of his hands - and more specifically the palm area corresponding to the base of the metacarpals (just past the wrist) - most often the thenar eminence (fleshy/muscular area of the palm at the base of the thumb).

When tears associated with deep, sincere laughter occur in straight men - the majority of the time these tears are wiped away using the palms of the hands. With other gender identities, the fingers are more commonly used.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3611: Salma Hayek, Danny Trejo and a Tattoo - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Salma Hayek sure can tell a story. The one she tells here is hilarious and very much worth the watch. The skilled actress also demonstrates many body language tells - one of which is delineated below.

Notice Ms. Hayek is sitting on her left leg with her left foot all the way up on the coach. This is a signal of significant emotional comfort. Despite her being on The Graham Norton Show with a such a dynamic host and other guests - she is very much at ease during this story.

This is yet another example of the nonverbal communication axiom, that in order for a configuration of the body to be PHYSICALLY comfortable - it must FIRST be EMOTIONALLY comfortable.

Another valuable take-home point here is suppose, that if upon being asked a question or a subject being raised, a person moved out of this comfortable leg configuration and placed both feet flat on the floor - you would know that the issue being raised or question being asked had struck a nerve of anxiety. In such a scenario, this leg position change would often be accompanied by a subtle fear expression on the face (e.g., slightly wider eyelid opening, an inward lip roll, etc.) and/or one hand scratching or holding the opposite arm or back of the head.
