Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3290: Miley Cyrus Undercover, I Witness News & Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jimmy Kimmel disguised Miley Cyrus as reporter "Janet" from Perth, Australia. Janet-Miley then went out on the streets of Hollywood and interviewed people regarding Miley Cyrus's upcoming hosting of the VMAs (Video Music Awards). What resulted is what some will call funny - while others will say it's distasteful - yet either way there were multiple body language displays, some of which are discussed below.

Self-touching (aka MAP or Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier - here exemplified during 1:16) as Janet-Miley says, "... Do you have any opinions about her or maybe what you think about her?". In this, as in most contexts, this side-scratch is a nonspecific anxiety tell.

Reporter Janet asks, "What would you say if Miley Cyrus was your daughter? Do you have kids? If they were acting like Miley Cyrus, would you have any thoughts?"

Her single arm crosses in front of her torso (1:37 - 1:47) in what is an extremely frequent, low confidence body language display. This particular configuration is much more common with women and gay men.

After Mr. Patriots fan says, "Actually you kinda look like her, actually."

Janet-Miley responds, "You know that's actually why they hired me. They flew me in from Perth and I'm here right now. I'm kinda freaking out that I'm on Hollywood Boulevard."

As she says, "... Perth and I'm here right now. I'm kinda freaking ...", Janet-Miley looks away with her head-neck and her eyes (2:00 - 2:02) while she's looking to Hollywood Boulevard. This is a very primal and driven as a manifestation of low-eye contact associated with deception.

During 2:02 - 2:03, Janet-Miley elevates on toes as she says ".... Hollywood Boulevard ...." - which in this context is a nonverbal tell of her heightened anxiety associated with lying.

In this segment Janet-Miley says, "Do you think Billy Ray - that's his name - it finally came back to me. Billy Ray, do you think he raised her to be that way - or you think she just kinda like lost her mind in all the Hollywood madness?"

During 2:06 - 2:07, as she says, "... Billy Ray, do you think he raised ...", Janet-Miley scratches her face just laterally to her mouth and nose. When associated with making a declarative statement ("... it finally came back to me ..."), this nonverbal MAP is highly consistent with the act of telling a lie.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2612: Chris Christie 'Calls a Spade a Spade' (Well … Almost) - Body Language of the 2016 Republican Presidential Hopeful (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Monday 18 November at the CEO Council in Washington D.C., Chris Christie was asked about the public's perceived coziness of the Governor and Barack Obama after Hurricane Sandy last November. The following is a portion of his response and some of the body language analysis.

At 26:01 the newly re-elected New Jersey politician continues, "...I mean it's ridiculous. You know the fact is - I speak candidly about everyone. And when the President does something worth praising, I will praise him; and when he does something worth damning, I'll damn him. But I'm not going to make that decision based on my party; I'm going to make that decision based on the facts. And so, I think most republicans ..."

During 26:20 - 26:22 as he says, "... And so ..." he displays a facial rub in the region between his right eye and nose. When committing this nonverbal (do you know the others?) when making a declarative statement ("... But I'm not going to make that decision based on my party; I'm going to make that decision based on the facts ...") - it is highly correlative with deception.

Thus while this 2016 Republican Presidential hopeful (yes he has nonverbally declared himself to be a candidate) speaks truth to power more than most, he is still a politician and makes some of his decisions based on how the electorate will view him.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2603: Sarah Palin's Body Language - She Feels Disgust toward Pope Francis and ... She Tells a Fib (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this recent interview of Sarah Palin, she displays many fantastic examples of body language. Two of these extremely valuable emotional-thought tells are discussed below.

At 0:16 in the above video when she recounts her story of being 12 years old - the former Governor of Alaska displays a unilateral near-eye scratch. In the midst of a declarative statement this specific nonverbal signal is very highly correlative with deception. This is not to suggest that Ms. Palin is lying about being a "born again" Christian or that some of her story is not true - however a portion of it is fabricated.

In the context of critiquing Pope Francis, beginning at 2:18 the 2008 U.S. Vice-Presidential candidate says, "... he's had some statements that to me seem kinda liberal ..." At 2:22 during the first syllable of  the word "kinda" she displays a classic microexpression of disgust. Her dramatic and bilateral nostril dilation is highly demonstrative of this emotion.

Not only does Sarah Palin think Pope Francis is liberal - he disgusts her.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2224:
Barack's Body Language
It's (NOT) good to be back in Michigan
President Obama Campaigns for Fiscal Cliff Resolution

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

President Obama visited Michigan yesterday. His trip is highlighted in the above news segment showing Barack at a rally in Redford, MI. In it, he talks about the feared "Fiscal Cliff", ideas to circumvent financial chaos as well as compromise with Speaker Boehner and the Republicans.

During the 1:03 to 1:05 segment, the President says, "...It's good to be back in Michigan!" At this same time he scratches just in front of his right ear with his right index finger. Facial touching, rubbing, scratching in several key anatomical areas (and this is one) when making a declarative statement - or when answering a question are nonverbals highly consistent with deception and virtually always indicates anxiety. His tongue display at 1:06, just as the video cuts away, is a similar configuration an infant makes when he/she doesn't like the food just spooned in their mouth. This nonverbal "Tongue Push" in this cluster-context also is congruent with a lie.

Of course, we all display this (and other) body language signal when we lie.... democrats and republicans (which ones do you know?). The President just completed a grueling campaign - and the last thing he wants to do is be on the road. So his fabrication here is not necessarily directed at Michigan, it's people, or even "being back" there again - but is most probably reflects his emotional tone about having to travel in general and needing to campaign in an effort to avoid the fiscal cliff - something that he feels has a straight forward solution.
