Body Language Analysis No. 4107 (REPOSTING): Paul Manafort, Robert Mueller, Russian Oligarchs, and Donald Trump - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In light of today's news that Michael Cohen received at least $500,000 from a Russian Oligarch (Viktor Vekselberg, the chairman of asset manager Renova Group - who has close ties to Vladimir Putin), I've received multiple requests for a reposting of this previous analysis. It's classic and profound - and was originally published on 30 October 2017. Updated cross-references are included at the bottom of the page.

With criminal charges expected in just a few hours, many believe that Paul Manafort is high on the list to be one of those first named by Robert Mueller's team in their investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US Presidential election. The above interview of Paul Manafort was conducted on 27 July 2016 (above). At that time, Mr. Manafort was Donald Trump's campaign manager. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

NORAH O'DONNELL (beginning at 1:58): So to be clear, Mr. Trump has no financial relationships with any Russian Oligarchs?

PAUL MANAFORT: Th-, that's what he said. I, I'd d-, that's what I sa-, that's - obviously what the, th, our position is.

Paul Manafort's verbal response alone is profound. "... that's - obviously what the, th, our position is". This is not, by any means, anywhere close to a denial. If he were confident and truthful he would say, "That's correct" or "No, he doesn't" or similar.

From a paralanguage perspective, his stuttering is also extreme. Mr. Manafort also confuses his pronouns - and interrupts his own sentences.

After he answers Ms. O'Donnell, Mr. Manafort displays a classic nonverbal tell (2:10). His lips grow very thin and take on a horizontal configuration. This is highly indicative of Anger.

Paul Manafort's jaw also clenches as well as juts forward. Both Jaw Clenching and Jaw Jutting are here indicative of an adrenaline surge associated with his Anger.

During 2:04, as he said, "Th-, that's what he said...", Mr. Manafort displays a shoulder shrug on his left side (e.g., this is one type of a Partial Emblematic Slip).

A shoulder shrug indicates:

    • I don't know
    • I don't care
    • What does it matter?
    • What difference does it make?

He also simultaneously closes his eyelids during this moment in an extended blink. This is blocking/distancing behavior - and a form of diminished eye contact. In this context it's indicative of deception.

As he says, "... that's - obviously what the, th, our position is...", President Trump's campaign manager (during that time), re-adjusts his position - in a textbook example of "Squirming in his Chair"/Butt Adjustment.

Manafort once again displays extended blinking along with gazing down and down-right (the quadrant/direction commonly associated with guilt, regret, and similar deep emotions)

Summary: Paul Manafort's multiple nonverbal signals indicate he believed that Donald Trump did indeed have financial relationships with Russian Oligarchs. Mr. Manafort's dramatic stuttering - and other paralanguage tells - along with his non-definitive/non-answer serve to drive even more nails in his proverbial coffin. This section of the interview is such a classic deception-detection nonverbal teaching example - that it will be shown for decades.

Body Language Analysis No. 4104: Walter Cronkite Reaction to JFK Assassination - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, under President Trump's direction, the US Federal Government released thousands of previously classified documents pertaining to the investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Some of the documents which were to be released are being held back pending further review and will possibly be made available to the public in April 2018. This last-minute change came in response to requests made by the FBI, CIA, and other intelligence agencies.

Although the majority of Americans weren't yet born or old enough to remember President Kennedy's assassination, those who watched the news that day have the events forever etched in their memory. Walter Cronkite was an American broadcast journalist and anchorman at CBS Evening News from 1962 - 1981. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Walter Cronkite's live broadcast reaction on 22 November 1963 to President Kennedy's death.

During 1:11 in the above video, as he is handed the news of Kennedy's death, Mr. Cronkite scratches his mustache area. Facial touching is a universal signal of anxiety, and more specifically, this signals Cronkite's disbelief. While his logical brain knows what's occurred, his emotional brain has yet to fully process the events of the day.

After putting his glasses on only eight seconds before, Walter Cronkite removes them again (1:19). This action is a subconscious stalling maneuver, giving the psyche additional time to process the emotional news. The glasses also act as an extension of the body, and thus touching them serves as a MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) and a tactile outlet for his anxiety.

As Cronkite begins to put his glasses back on (1:26) his jaw thrusts forward (an adrenaline surge) as the corners of his mouth vector laterally with a tightening of his mouth/lips in a classic expression of bitterness and regret.

Here we see Walter display a "Tight Tongue Jut" in a display of strong Disdain and Disgust (1:27). This is a signal of his mind emotionally rejecting the event.

His jaw then tightens dramatically during another adrenaline surge in an effort to suppress his tears (1:29).

A Tongue-In-Cheek is a common nonverbal maneuver to dampen tears and/or prevent an expression of sadness and crying (1:31).

His voice cracks as he says, "... Vice President Johnson ...", and Cronkite then clears his throat (1:33).

Cronkite then adjusts his glasses before removing them once again (1:36) - an additional attempt at down-regulating his anxiety.

As he says, "... thirty-sixth President ...", Mr. Cronkite blinks rapidly in a common display of anxiety (1:46).

Summary: Even with skilled professionals, suppressing strong emotions is almost impossible - and then only for very short durations. Signals always "leak" through. In this situation with Walter Cronkite, with our 20/20 "retrospectroscopes", it's easy for most people to see his nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage signals. In our everyday worlds', these are just as detectable - if you know the tells.

Body Language Analysis No. 4057: Steve Bannon's "60 Minutes" Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the 60 Minutes preview video above, Charlie Rose interviews Steve Bannon - President Trump's former Chief White House Strategist (a newly created position) and CEO of candidate Trump's campaign.

From a body language perspective, there multiple valuable tells in this interview - one of which is discussed here.

During 1:37 - 1:38, as Charlie Rose says, "You seem to have done that at every point in the campaign - when he was in trouble, asking him to double-down on his rhetoric, double-down in terms of appealing to his base .... ", when the camera switches to Bannon's face, at the very end of Mr. Rose's sentence and for about a second afterward, Mr. Bannon Clenches his jaw muscles (Masseter muscles). Look carefully at the back of his jaw - in front of and slightly below his ears for a bulging muscle. His upper lip, which although is not very thick on Bannon's resting face - thins out so dramatically, it disappears. The area above his upper lip and below his nose (the "mustache area") also is significantly tightened.

We see this same pattern at 2:08 - 2:09 on Mr. Bannon's face as Mr. Rose says, "Did you lose confidence of anybody because they came at you at that point and said, 'Look, w, w, he ought to get out of this race - other than - Reince Priebus'?..."

If you look carefully, you can even see Bannon doing this when he is back-lit during 2:05 - 2:08.

Also, during 3:18, 3:27 - 3:28, and 3:29 - 3:30 - as Steve Bannon and Charlie Rose were discussing
Governor Chris Christie, Mr. Bannon again displays these same nonverbal signals multiple times. Intriguingly, there was also an additional component of nostril flaring and forward jutting of the jaw present in this segment.

In this second video of the same interview, at 1:10 Charlie Rose says, "I tell ya where many people suggest it should have gone. It should have gone in terms of denouncing - specifically from the very beginning - neo-Nazis and white supremacists and people of that political view - and they should have gone there because - ahhh, those were people that Americans in World War II went to fight against and you should have instantly have denounced them - and you didn't at first instinct. In fact, you seemed to be doubling-down in terms of a moral equivalency."

During most of Mr. Rose's statement, Mr. Bannon is clenching his jaw repeatedly. This is best seen on Bannon's face during 1:22 - 1:32. Yet as with the examples already discussed - if you look carefully, some of this jaw-clenching display can even be seen from behind when Mr. Bannon is back-lit.

All of these examples show Mr. Bannon, to varying degrees, in moments of adrenaline surges specific to anger. Please watch the videos carefully, as the still images do not capture the dynamic nature of these nonverbal signs.

Of course, we're all allowed to feel anger.  We're human beings. Yet - in a healthy individual, as with all emotions, anger should be:

• Contextual
• Proportional
• Not too frequent

Summary: This is but one conversation/interview. However, it's profoundly important to note that when jaw clenching, forward jutting of the jaw, thinning of the upper lip, nostril flaring, tightening of the mustache region (or other anger signals) are frequently displayed - take heed, for the person is far from emotional baseline - and Impulse Control Disorder may very well be lurking.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3857: Taunting a Snowplow Driver - Belleville, Ontario - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although the back story of this incident was not known at the time of this post, it's an outstanding example of facial changes indicative of crescendoing anger.

In the image immediately above, note the configuration of the snowplow driver's lips. Although they're not fully visible, we can see that they're thinned and stretched. This horizontal configuration is highly characteristic of anger.

His nostrils are also flaring - which indicates increased respiration, blood pressure and heart rate - all secondary to elevated adrenaline which accompanies anger.

Notice too, the left side of his jaw  - we can see that it's clenching.

With lower to moderate levels of anger, the eyelids partially close - with considerable tension of the lower eyelids. This is well exemplified in this moment.

In this second image, his lips stretch even thinner - almost disappearing - indicative of growing anger. His jaw is thrust forward - known as a "Jaw Jut" - and is virtually always present just before a punch, slap or other act requiring physical strength.

His jaw clenching has also noticeably increased.

The nostril flaring has amplified.

Notice also that his eyelids - particularly his left eye - has opened wider. With high levels of anger (aka "rage") - the eyelids - which were instant earlier, partially closed, are now opening wider.

In this last image, the man's anger is growing even greater - and he is initiating a violent physical act - a strike/slap/hit at his provoker.

His jaw is jutting even further forward as evidenced by the gap opening up between his lips.

In addition, his eyelids are opened even further (still greater on his left) - a classic signal of his anger and an elevated adrenaline state.

Take Home Point: Whenever you see a jaw jut - especially with a clenched fist and/or eyes open widely - protect yourself immediately. Oh, and don't hassle snowplow drivers...

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3090: Lance Armstrong Lied - Again, Girlfriend Took the Blame - Body Language of the Mea Culpa Face (PHOTO)

Anna Hansen, the longtime girlfriend of defamed Lance Armstrong, took the blame for the ex-cycling star when on 28 December 2014 Armstrong hit two cars in Aspen, Colorado. Allegedly it was a mutual decision for Hansen and Armstrong to lie in the police in their initial report.

Hansen allegedly later told the police, "We've had our family name smeared over every paper in the world in the last couple of years, and honestly, I've got teenagers. I just wanted to protect my family because I thought 'Gosh, Anna Hansen hit some cars,' it's not going to show up in the papers, but 'Lance Armstrong hit some cars,' it's going to be a national story."

The image above shows the false seven time winner of the Tour de France - titles which have since been stripped from him - in a particular cluster of facial expressions which is extremely common when admitting fault and indeed it's called the "Mea Culpa Face".

The primary emotion being expressed in the mea culpa face is one of regret. Yet there also is significant anger present - although it is the secondary emotion. In addition, the psyche is attempting to suppress strong feelings in this moment both from growing and from being expressed. Do you see and can you separate all of these facial nonverbal components?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2923: Barack Obama, Jaw Clenching and Diffusing Anger - Body Language as a Form of Biofeedback (PHOTOS)

In this image taken recently during the President's vacation on Martha's Vineyard, Mr. Obama took some time out to comment on the dynamic situations in Iraq including the resignation of Nouri al-Maliki and the Yazidi's plight from their entrapment on Mt. Sinjar.

Whether you agree or disagree with Barack Obama's politics, you probably recognize his superior speaking ability - but you may not be as cognizant of his superior nonverbal skills. You may also be aware of how - unlike many other elected leaders - he is better than most at not letting negative words or actions affect his demeanor. Yet few realize that all of these are intimately connected - the verbal, the nonverbal, emotional awareness and emotional control. This phenomenon is subtly illustrated in the image above.

Jaw clenching is a body language signal highly consistent with anger (although it can be seen in other settings depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered). Additional nonverbal anger signs here include the eyebrows being drawn together as well as their downward-vectoring. Nostril flaring also accompanies anger (along with some other emotions). All of these are present in this picture of POTUS.

The President's jaw clenching can be easily seen in this photo. It is important to note however, that there is no jutting of the jaw (a forward displacement of the mandible often resulting in a momentary under-bite). Because Barack's teeth are clenched, his lip cannot roll inwards - which often occurs during the moments far from emotional baseline - so bunching up of the lips and adjacent tissue occurs (A "Peri-lip Bulge" - here in abundance). Chin dimpling is also seen.

In the presence of jaw clenching (as long as there is no jaw jutting) - if the back part (posterior) of the jaw is clenched tighter - the anger tends to be greater and this action facilitates an escalation of the anger. When the front portion (anterior) of the jaw is the primary focus of the tightening - the anger tends to be less - and in this tends to engender the anger's decrescendo. This is a form of body language biofeedback. Of course there are many other factors which may build or lessen anger or any negative emotion in these crucial "refractory periods" - but this is a valuable one. Where does your jaw tighten when you grow angry? Are you even aware of this? How do you dial this down?

Emotional self-awareness is relatively rare. The ability to down-regulate negative emotions is even scarcer. Nonverbal techniques learned and practiced will increase emotional self-recognition and thus aide in self-de-escalation.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2894: Maria Kirilenko, Alex Ovechkin and Subtle Body Language of .... (PHOTOS)

Maria Kirilenko has called off her engagement to Alex Ovechkin. Although in this image, the Russian tennis professional may not be directing it at her then Hockey Player (Captain of the Washington Capitals) fiancƩ - she is feeling anger. Note that her eyes and face are not directly facing the object of her anger. When we do not like, do not respect or do not trust another - we tend to not direct our feet, our torso, our head or our eyes directly at them.

Ms. Kirilenko's jaw is clenched and simultaneously slightly jutting forward (ergo "Jaw Jut") - both nonverbal signals of anger.

Maria's mouth is foreshortened as her lips are thinned - particularly her upper lip. These signs are also significant for anger.

The area above Kirilenko's upper lip and her nose (termed the "mustache area" in both genders) is contracted and tense. This tension co-exists with nostril flaring.

What other very slight signals of anger are seen on Ms. Kirilenko's face?

Maria's face does not have a full expression of anger. There are other components of this emotion which are not present here. Moreover, nonverbal signals of all emotions may exist for fractions of a second (microexpressions). These subtleties of both proportion and time are only two reasons why many don't see emotions displayed right in front of them - and thus suffer their ramifications. How many emotional displays have gone unseen by you this week?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2859: Cristiano Ronaldo, The World Cup, Portugal vs. USA - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Silvestre Varela of Portugal's National Team scored an equalizer today on a perfect cross from Cristiano Ronaldo. The header came with 25 seconds left in the final minute. This last minute clutch play has kept Portugal alive. Ronaldo and company will face Ghana this Thursday as the US National team goes up against Germany.

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the source video has since been deleted from YouTube.

Earlier in the match just after US Captain, Clint Dempsey scored the go ahead, Ronaldo is captured in this expression (2:58 in the above video).

This close-up shows the Real Madrid forward displaying two primary emotions.

His clenched jaw, horizontal thin lips, peri-lip bulge, inward lip roll, dilated nostrils, and bilateral widely opened eyelids - is a strong nonverbal cluster of anger.

Many body language novices would mistake his mouth asymmetry here for contempt - however it is not - rather it is regret. Can you name the specific features which differentiates these two emotions?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2084:
Lolo Jones's False Mastication/Jaw Clenching

Lolo Jones finished fourth in the 110 meter hurdles at the 2012 London Olympics. Fourth in a World of 3.6 Billion women. And people still give her a hard time. Above is yet another example. You can't blame her for being nervous or angry. Jones shows signals of both here. Note at the beginning of this video when Mike Galanos is asking his question, Lolo is tightening (clenching) her jaw muscles (masseter muscles) in an alternating fashion. This body language is a variation of "False Mastication" (false chewing) and is a nonverbal highly consistent with anxiety. Jaw clenching can also signal anger. While not nearly as obvious as Ms. Jones's eye brows contracting together and downward (during significant portions of this clip), this false mastication/jaw clenching is more subtle body language is often the only sign displayed. Miss it at your own risk.
