Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3800: Houston Rocket's Chinanu Onuaku Shooting Underhanded ("Granny Style") Free Throws (and His Teammates' responses) - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chinanu Onuaku made his NBA career debut on Monday night with the Houston Rockets. He came in the game in the fourth quarter, scoring six points and three rebounds in a 131 - 115 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Onuaku has made viral news by the sinking of his two free throws using the underhanded technique - which is often times colloquially (and patronizingly) referred to as "Granny Style".

Although many technical analysts and players (including NBA great, Rick Barry) believe the underhanded configuration is indeed a method which is statistically superior (often far superior) to the ubiquitous overhanded free throw (even Wilt Chamberlain used it in the 1961-62 season, including 28 free throws in one game), it has not been used in decades.

The response of his teammates in the above video provide fantastic examples of some nonverbal tells indicative of emotional suppression.

Note his teammates' (and even some of the audience) reaction. In this post, for nonverbal teaching purposes, his colleague Ryan Anderson's reaction is highlighted and analyzed.

In the frame above, once Chinanu Onuaku makes his first free underhanded free throw, Ryan Anderson stands, cheers and "fist-pumps" the air (red shirt with white towel around his neck). It's the first in Onuaku's NBA career, so perhaps a cheer from a teammate is in order - yet for a free throw this is disproportional and out-of-context.

As Ryan sits back down, his mouth is configured in an "Inward Lip Roll". An inward lip roll (aka ILR) is a sign of emotional suppression. This is subconscious attempt of the mind to minimize both inward emotion growth (can you tell what feelings he's suppressing?) as well as outward expression of that same emotion.

A moment later Anderson displays a "Tight Tongue Jut". In this nonverbal behavior, the term "Tight" is included to describe the concomitant jaw tension (in distinction to a "Loose Tongue Jut" which has a completely different meaning). A tight tongue jut signals disdain and repulsion - in this moment, at the idea/sight of a "Granny Style" free throw. This is identical to what occurs when infants push out food which they find "distasteful".

He then re-configures into another Inward Lip Roll. Note his simultaneous jaw jutting as well as his mid-face (mustache region and nostrils) tension. Disgust is being felt (and suppressed).

In this next image, we see a rarely photographed (yet not at all rarely displayed) variant of an inward lip roll - with Ryan Anderson's mouth open moderately (Did you catch the inward and downward vectoring of his eyebrows and lower forehead?).

In this final image, Anderson recruits his towel as a pseudo-mouth wipe in order to cover his feelings of disdain and disgust.

Summary: Ryan Anderson's clapping for Chinanu Onuaku's underhanded free throws is hyperbolic and sarcastic. He is strongly suppressing emotions of repulsion and disgust. These feelings may be secondary reactions to other emotions or conflicts.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3597: David Cameron, The Brexit and Suppressing Emotions - Body Language (PHOTOS)

The decision on the EU Referendum (Brexit) will be made in the next few hours. David Cameron is, of course, the lead advocate of the "Remain" camp. Thus these expressions are very probably representative of the Prime Minister's emotional tone at this moment.

In the first image (above), Mr. Cameron is displaying an “Inward Lip Roll (ILR). An inward lip roll is just one of many nonverbal tells signaling that the emotion being felt (or though-felt) is significantly greater (and/or different) vs. what is being expressed verbally. Such verbal-nonverbal disparities are profoundly important glimpses into another person’s mind - as well as our own when we're projecting body language/facial expressions.

As its name suggests, during an ILR the lips are rolled inward and gently (to moderately) bitten. In all but the milder examples, this is also accompanied by a jaw jut (jaw pushed outward) along with a wrinkling/dimpling of the chin. The “mustache area” is also tensed as this mid-facial tissue is put on stretch. In addition, there usually is at least a mild-moderate degree of nostril flaring (as is seen in this example).

In the setting of an inward lip roll, the psyche is attempting to suppress strong feelings from building up as well as suppressing these emotions from being expressed outwardly. The ILR is usually associated with negative emotions such as anger, anxiety, sadness, etc., however it's also one method we all commonly use (most of the time subconsciously) in preventing laughter or smiling out of social context.

In this second image, Prime Minister Cameron’s facial nonverbals are similar, yet somewhat more developed. Note the additional finding of a more reddened facial color - including his ears. This betrays the presence of a valsalva-like phenomenon of semi breath-holding and increased intrathoracic pressure resulting in a temporary pooling of blood in the head/face. This also causes the distention of the jugular vein (seen in his left neck). If we had a blood pressure monitor hooked up to the PM, we would see a significant rise in this moment.

Intriguingly, those individuals who regularly practice yoga and other meditative activities will have this facial expression much less frequency.

Whenever observing nonverbal behavior, it's extremely important to never interpret in isolation and always look at the other components of a person's over-all body language. What do David Cameron's eyes say about his total expression? If his eyes were opened very widely with these same mouth configurations, what emotion would that indicate?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3155: Aaron Hernandez found Guilty - gets Life Sentence without possibility of Parole - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder of Odin Lloyd in addition to five weapon charges. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is also awaiting a separate trial for the double murder of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu in addition to associated attempted murder and assault charges.

In the above video, after the jury's verdict of guilty is read aloud, Hernandez can be seen looking at his mother and fiancée - as he then displays three very telling nonverbal signals in rapid succession.

In this image, captured at 0:23, we see Hernandez's jaw rapidly and briefly displacing laterally - here to his left. This nonverbal sign is known as a "Jaw Confessional" and is seen during moments of embarrassment, just before an apology or in the midst of re-living a painful memory.

The jaw confessional also has an element of regret associated with it.

One second later (0:24), Hernandez then displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR).


An inward lip roll is seen during moments of effort when one is trying to suppress both the inward growth - as well as an outer expression of an emotion - usually seen with negative one (but it can be seen during the suppression of joy, laughter, etc.).

Less than a second later we see the former New England tight end's tongue dart out and rapidly back in his mouth - in what is known as a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue").

Tongue Juts can be thought of as one's psyche waving a flag to the outside world saying, "I've been bad" or "I've been caught" or "I did something stupid". This body language display can also be seen in light-hearted moments of self-deprecation or excitement (yet still the same message is being sent - that of mischief). 

This nonverbal cluster displayed by Aaron Hernandez is highly significant of guilt.

My condolences to the family, friends and fiancée of Odin Lloyd.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3090: Lance Armstrong Lied - Again, Girlfriend Took the Blame - Body Language of the Mea Culpa Face (PHOTO)

Anna Hansen, the longtime girlfriend of defamed Lance Armstrong, took the blame for the ex-cycling star when on 28 December 2014 Armstrong hit two cars in Aspen, Colorado. Allegedly it was a mutual decision for Hansen and Armstrong to lie in the police in their initial report.

Hansen allegedly later told the police, "We've had our family name smeared over every paper in the world in the last couple of years, and honestly, I've got teenagers. I just wanted to protect my family because I thought 'Gosh, Anna Hansen hit some cars,' it's not going to show up in the papers, but 'Lance Armstrong hit some cars,' it's going to be a national story."

The image above shows the false seven time winner of the Tour de France - titles which have since been stripped from him - in a particular cluster of facial expressions which is extremely common when admitting fault and indeed it's called the "Mea Culpa Face".

The primary emotion being expressed in the mea culpa face is one of regret. Yet there also is significant anger present - although it is the secondary emotion. In addition, the psyche is attempting to suppress strong feelings in this moment both from growing and from being expressed. Do you see and can you separate all of these facial nonverbal components?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2873: Raffaele Sollecito, Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher - Raffaele's Press Conference - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Two days ago Raffaele Sollecito gave a press conference in which he and his attorney (Giulia Bongiorno) legally distanced himself from Amanda Knox for his alleged participation in the murder of Meredith Kercher. Beginning at 0:44, Bongiorno begins, "It is clear that Sollecito, reading the verdict, takes note of the fact that the court of appeal found that there was something of a lie over Amanda's whereabouts. Rafaele, as you'll all remember, has maintained that he spent the night with Amanda - the night. That doesn't include the earlier part of the evening, as he said." As Bongiorno is speaking and throughout the seven seconds described below, Sollecito displays rapidly oscillating and specific facial nonverbals.

During 0:51 - 0:52 Sollecito displays a contempt-disgust expression.

At 0:53- 0:54, Raffaele's mouth configures to form an "Inward Lip Roll". This is the psyche's attempt at suppressing an escalation of an inward crescendo as well as an outward manifestation of emotions as they move (often rapidly) from baseline.

At 0:54, Sollecito briefly displays a more pronounced disgust-contempt expression.

At 0:58 a primary (and more mild) contempt expression











In this limited context, we cannot say whether Raffaele Sollecito felt contempt and disgust at what he is perceiving to be a failure of the legal process vs. the idea of distancing himself from Amanda Knox vs. Amanda herself vs. his own Lawyer vs. towards members of the press, etc. But we can say with absolute certainty that he strongly felt these emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2744: Oscar Pistorius, Reeva Steenkamp and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Oscar Pistorius's trial for the alleged murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp began earlier this week in Pretoria, South Africa. The above image was taken yesterday in court. Pistorius's mouth opening/lips are configured in what is known as an partial (incomplete) "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR).

The inward lip roll is the psyche's attempt to suppress the outward manifestation and the internal escalation of strong emotion. The majority of the time this body language is seen during negative emotional moments. And although it is NOT the case in this example, the ILR may also be commonly seen during the suppression of joy-laughter and thus it may also be a component of some expressions of duping delight. It is also seen during moments of physical exertion associated with mental focus.

Intriguingly, Mr. Pistorius's pupils are quite large at this moment. Given the context of the inward lip roll and the other nonverbal clues on Oscar's face, what do his dilate pupils indicate? What about his nostrils? Are they flared or normal baseline? What is the significance of his clenched jaw muscles? Is the tension of his mid-face increased, decreased or normal? All of these additional observations provide valuable clues as to Pistorius's thoughts and the nuance of his emotional tone.
