Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3930: Emmanuel Macron, Hacking, and Anger - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

After files from his campaign were recently attacked - in a "massive and coordinated hacking operation" - and subsequently posted on social media, it's not at all surprising that Emmanuel Macron would be angry.

Most all people, who are otherwise socially adept and with good interpersonal skills, are able to accurately characterize others' emotions when they're present at higher levels. However, when these same emotions are displayed in mild or even in moderate amounts - it's amazing just how often people misidentify - or are even completely oblivious to them.

Note Emmanuel Macron's lower eyelids - for they exhibit significantly increased tension. This is rarely noted by all but the most astute observers.

His eyebrows are also lowered and slightly drawn together.

The French Presidential Candidate's mid-face is also significantly contracted. This is particularly evident in the area above his upper lip - as well as with the flaring of his nostrils.

His lips are horizontally-stretched, thinned and rolled inward - to such a degree that his lower lip has disappeared and only the thinnest remnant of his upper lip remains visible.

Because his jaw is also clenched, the area below his lower lip is bulging outward. Although from this angle it's difficult to seen, his jaw is also jutting forward. This mandibular clenching also has the secondary effect of dimpling the anterior surface of his chin.

This photo is an excellent example of a nonverbal cluster of moderate-level anger displays. In the real-world, don't be the next person to gloss-over or under-appreciate such emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3857: Taunting a Snowplow Driver - Belleville, Ontario - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although the back story of this incident was not known at the time of this post, it's an outstanding example of facial changes indicative of crescendoing anger. 

In the image immediately above, note the configuration of the snowplow driver's lips. Although they're not fully visible, we can see that they're thinned and stretched. This horizontal configuration is highly characteristic of anger.

His nostrils are also flaring - which indicates increased respiration, blood pressure and heart rate - all secondary to elevated adrenaline which accompanies anger.

Notice too, the left side of his jaw  - we can see that it's clenching.

With lower to moderate levels of anger, the eyelids partially close - with considerable tension of the lower eyelids. This is well exemplified in this moment.

In this second image, his lips stretch even thinner - almost disappearing - indicative of growing anger. His jaw is thrust forward - known as a "Jaw Jut" - and is virtually always present just before a punch, slap or other act requiring physical strength.

His jaw clenching has also noticeably increased.

The nostril flaring has amplified.

Notice also that his eyelids - particularly his left eye - has opened wider. With high levels of anger (aka "rage") - the eyelids - which were instant earlier, partially closed, are now opening wider.

In this last image, the man's anger is growing even greater - and he is initiating a violent physical act - a strike/slap/hit at his provoker.

His jaw is jutting even further forward as evidenced by the gap opening up between his lips.

In addition, his eyelids are opened even further (still greater on his left) - a classic signal of his anger and an elevated adrenaline state.

Take Home Point: Whenever you see a jaw jut - especially with a clenched fist and/or eyes open widely - protect yourself immediately. Oh, and don't hassle snowplow drivers...

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3805: Mariah Carey's New Year's Eve Lip Sync Fail On Live TV - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Mariah Carey has got a Milli Vanilli problem. She ended 2016 with what appears to have been a prepared lip sync routine in Times Square - but because some of her vocals did function as she anticipated, it dramatically threw off her act.

From a nonverbal perspective the incident gave us a good many teaching examples. The image above is but one of these displays. Captured from a moment during the performance in question (and its cropped close-up below), this demonstrates a classic yet often misunderstood facial expression.

Notice Ms. Carey's lower and mid-facial tension. More specifically, the area between her upper lip and nose is contracted and stretched. Mariah's nostrils are also flaring (dilated). Moreover her jaw is jutting forward - which is difficult to discern here because of the angle, however the multiple small evidences of dimpling on the lower aspect of her chin is a sure sign of a forward-directed jaw under tension (This also is a sign of clenching of the jaw).

Another profound characteristic demonstrated here is the horizontal thinning of Mariah Carey's lips. This nonverbal display taken alone is highly indicative of anger - and when clustered with the other signals mentioned above, there can be no doubt of its presence.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3545: Eric Trump's Reaction to President Obama's Comments at the 2016 White House Correspondents' Dinner - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

There were many moments from last night's White House Correspondents' Dinner which were noteworthy from a nonverbal communication point of view. What follows is but one of those - this one involving Donald Trump's son, Eric - who was in attendance.

Continuing at 20:30, President Obama continues: "..... Nah, I'm just kidding! You know I'm going to talk about Trump. Come on! We weren't just going to stop there. Come on!"

Then the camera flashes on Eric Trump, pictured here in the center of the image below (20:53). Note his lips - they are both thinned and horizontally oriented. In addition, he is displaying significant mid-facial tension and nostril flaring. This nonverbal cluster is a highly reliable signal for anger. The vast majority of people will not see or misinterpret this crucial body language sign.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3494: Donald Trump reacts to questions about Breitbart News reporter allegedly getting roughed up by his Campaign Manager - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During a recent event in Jupiter, Florida, Donald Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, allegedly grabbed Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields by the arm as she attempted to ask the candidate a question. Ms. Fields also alleges that this physical contact resulted in bruising. The video above shows Donald Trump being asked about this incident. Unfortunately some of this Trump's expressions are initially blocked by words on the screen and other people, however there are a couple of seconds which are very telling.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the 0:57 - 0:58 segment of this video. This series of images were captured just after Mr. Trump says, "... Perhaps she made the story up. I think that's what happened, okay? ...".

Trump then turns his body and his head. Note his lips rapidly acquire a thinned, horizontal configuration - the classic Thinned Lips of Anger.

There is a microexpression component of contempt in this moment - evident in his mustache area on his right side.

Here we can better see his thinned lips here together with his mid-facial tension. His contempt expression is waning somewhat, yet there is some significant disgust displayed in this instant. 

Trump's anger, contempt and disgust cluster is resolving (yet still evident in his lips) as he begins to return to his baseline expression.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3467: Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Dies - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Associate Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia died last night in his sleep, apparently of natural causes.

Judge Scalia was not one to suffer fools. And it's an understatement to say he was very animated. 

The image included here shows Supreme Court Justice Scalia in a classic (though certainly not full) expression of anger.

The position of his eyebrows are lowered - but not extremely so. They are also not drawn together. Had they also been pulled together (and further lowered, particularly in the center [medially]), this would have further amplified his angry expression.

His eyelids are also tense. This is especially evident in his lower eyelids. His eyelids are also partially closed (consistent with mild to moderate anger).

His head is not fully turned toward the person of his attention. We tend not to turn fully toward those we don't like, don't respect or don't believe.

In this moment, Judge Scalia's mid-face has a considerable degree of muscle tension. This is very well seen in his "mustache area" as well as his with the flaring of his nostrils.

A strong hallmark of anger are thinned lips. At first glance, his lips in this photo may appear to some as an inward lip roll - but it's not. Because his jaw is clenched and thus his teeth are strongly together, his lips cannot roll completely inward - and his jaw clenching is a very strong signal of anger. This clenching is further evidenced by the dramatic dimpling of his chin. Moreover his jaw is thrust forward (aka a "Jaw Jut") although this is a bit more difficult to visualize given the angle of this image.

My condolences to Judge Scalia's family. Thank you sir for your service to your country. May you rest in peace.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2824: Michael Jace ("The Shield" Actor) Arrested for Alleged Murder of His Wife - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Michael Jace, best known for his role as detective Julien Lowe on the television show "The Shield" was arrested today for the alleged murder of his wife, April Jace. According to several news sources, Jace has confessed to shooting her.

In the above image Mr. Jace is handcuffed. His central forehead is contracted and elevated - thus also elevating his inner eyebrows. Whenever significant sincere emotional or physical pain is felt - whether being experienced directly or secondarily for another person(s) or animal via empathy - the central forehead contracts. However - in these scenarios the body language of the mouth should ALWAYS take on a congruent expression - one of sadness, pain, fear, etc. - or combinations thereof. Michael Jace's mouth is configured in an expression of sadness.

The police officer's eyebrows are not elevated - rather they are pulled downward and inwards (towards each other). And although it is difficult to see in this low resolution image, his eyelids are partially closed and tightened. The officer's jaw (mandible) is pushed forward in a "Jaw Jut". The mouth's right corner is pulled up in a very specific expression many confuse with a type of smile - yet it indicates regret. His lips are dramatically thinned. This nonverbal cluster indicates a primary emotion of anger and a secondary one of regret.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2133: Dan Quayle and Lloyd Bentsen Debate in 1988 - "Senator, You're no Jack Kennedy"

In this classic video segment from the 1988 Presidential campaign season, Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX) and Senator Dan Quayle (R-IN) gave us one of the most memorable moments in American political debate history, when Quayle said he had as much experience as then Senator John "Jack" Kennedy did when he ran for President in 1960. Bentsen displays a brief eyebrow flash - a quick upward-and-back-down movement of the eyebrows with a similar contraction across the entire width of his forehead - at the 0:07 mark. In this context it is a nonverbal signal of incredulity. He was either in disbelief that Dan Quayle was claiming he was as qualified as Kennedy - or more likely he couldn't believe Quayle just tossed him a slow pitch the size of a grapefruit.

"I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator you're no Jack Kennedy." and Quayle retorts, "That was really uncalled for Senator", Quayle displays a mouth nonverbal highly indicative of anger. His lips become very thinned and are stretched horizontally in a straight line (seen during 0:24 - 0:26 and more pronounced from 0:26 - 0:28).

Dan Quayle's body language of anger in this context is expected - with the benefit hindsight and video - with the ability to pause and replay - we can see this nonverbal tell. However many times in our day-to-day lives - it is missed. There will be pleasant words spoken and yet a classic body language configuration which is contradictory - and few see it or pay it any heed. Whenever the verbal and the nonverbal are in disparity - always believe the body language.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1919: The Asymmetrical Smile - we all use this Body Language .... but Mitt Romney displays it too often

Mitt Romney displays here a classical body language example of the Asymmetrical "Smile". Moreover, not only is his left side not smiling, it is frowning. Neither is the right-side of his mouth for that matter. This is a "Pseudo-Smile". In addition, the Presidential candidate's lips are thinned - indicating a component of anger component. Along with his left-sided frown side - these nonverbals reflect Mitt's true emotional tone. 

We all make this expression from time to time (and variations of it), and more than we realized. But when you're running for President, you need to extricate this expression from your routine. Mr. Romney uses this facial expression far too much and in the context of verbal disparity. Said another way, his words are positive, but his expressions (this and others) are negative. When the verbal and nonverbal messages are contradictory - it sends feelings of cognitive and emotional dissonance to audiences and the public at large. It also indicates the former Massachusetts Governor is truly feeling such dueling emotions. To the public, this makes him "feel" more like a politician - and less like the guy next door which he should be - in truth and in projection. If Mitt Romney wants to become President, he must solve this problem. The same is true for you - even is your subjects are more mundane and for much smaller audiences.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1863: Sharapova's Lips of Anger

Perhaps the most reliable body signal of anger is thinning of the lips. Here Maria Sharapova displays this highly characteristic nonverbal during her third round match of the French Open against Shuai Peng of China. The vast majority of the time the lips are pulled thin and laterally so that they take on a nearly straight line. Normally when interpreting body language, it is important premise of reliability to look for a cluster of two or three signals occurring simultaneously or within a short time. The thinned lips of anger are an exception to the rule - when you see them, you can be sure anger is present. The Russian star defeated Peng 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the next round at Roland Garros.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Secret # 1060: Belichick's Anger

Bill Belichick is pictured here at a recent press conference. The New England Patriots' Head Coach is exemplifying several classic body language signals - four just with his mouth. First note that his lips and mouth opening are stretched and thinned in a horizontal line - which is a strong indicator of anger. In addition, the Coach's lips are rolled inwards (2). This Inward Lip Roll (ILR) is seen when there is anxiety and an attempt to control it. Commonly there is another negative emotion with which it is coupled - often anger, fear, sadness, etc. .... Belichick's psyche is attempting to squelch an outward expression of his emotions. The ILR is also coincident with a clenched and closed jaw (3). This tight jaw configuration along with a jaw jut (see Secret # 273: Anger and Disgust in Azerbaijan and Secret # 757: Asma's Mild Jaw Jut) (4) are nonverbals which also correlate strongly with anger. Often with the ILR, the jaw is not clenched completely closed - because there is less, little or no anger component. In such cases, the lips roll inwards between the teeth and thus give the mouth a different appearance (see: Secret # 531: Sarkozy's Mouth Tells Us What He's Feeling).

Negotiation Body Language Secret # 593: When Disparity exists between Face and Hands - What to Believe?

When you see contradictory Body Language signals - how should this influence your interpretation? Here, Texas Governor Rick Perry gives us the "Thumbs Up" - which in the many countries and his native U.S. is a universal gesture of optimism during the recent CNN Western Republican Presidential Debate in Las Vegas, Nevada. His face however, belies his real feelings (at this moment). His mid and lower face are significantly tightened. Specifically, his lips are thinned and stretched laterally (a signal of anger) while also displaying a slight inward lip roll (anxiety-anger and actively focusing on controlling this). Perry's mouth/lip signs are being subconsciously controlled, while his thumb display is quite conscious. Certainly, debating in a nationally televised political event with worthy opponents is no easy task. I don't know where any politician gets their thick skins; but obviously these nonverbal signals are not congruent. The subconsciously dictated behavior always reflect the person's true emotional state in real-time. Thus, it is extremely difficult to fake one emotion when you truly feel another.

Negotiation Secret # 405: Carli Bruni & Dagger Eyes

This is the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, and his actress-model-singer-song writer wife, Carla Bruni. We've all heard the expression, "If looks could kill", or "She is Shooting Daggers" at him, etc. Here Ms. Bruni is giving us a subtle to moderate example of "Dagger Eyes". Her eyes are opened wider than her non-angry eyes would be and her brows are also elevated. Her lips are stretched/thinned and her mid-face is subtly tightened as well. Ms. Bruni's nostrils are clearly slightly dilated too. All of these are consistent in with anger. 

Most everyone people can spot Body Language signals when they are exhibited in their extreme or nearly so, but I am uterly amazed at the number of educated, skilled and otherwise socially adept professionals who will continuously miss moderate, let alone subtle examples of Body Language. They are truly missing a gold mine of information, for it is in the detection and understanding of these milder examples that you will give yourself a profound advantage. 

Another similarly related issue is the brevity of many Nonverbal signals. Since this is a still image, and not a video - it's impossible to say how long Carla displayed this look. It may very well have been an example of a "Microexpression". Microexpressions are exceedingly common and by definition are very evanescent - as brief as 0.04 of a second. One of the reasons for this is that they are initiated by our subconscious - before our consciousness is even aware of our feelings.
