Body Language Analysis No. 4224: Greta Gerwig's reaction to Guillermo del Toro's Best Picture Oscar Speech - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman in history to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Many thought her film, Lady Bird, was also a sure bet to win Best Picture. Yet Guillermo del Toro and The Shape of Water won both awards.


From a nonverbal point of view, Greta Gerwig's reaction to Mr. del Toro during his speech is an excellent body language teaching moment.

During 1:53, just as Greta says (reading her lips), "I love him" - just before and during the first portion of the word, "love" - her central forehead momentarily contracts and elevates. It's crucial to emphasize that this forehead elevation involves just the central portion and not the entire width of her forehead. 

Her inner (medial) eyebrows also elevate.

Simultaneously, Ms. Gerwig's right palm is in full contact with her sternum as her fingers extend over the left side of her upper chest. This hand placement is, of course, over the heart. The fact that Greta is right-hand dominant is also an important detail.

Her hand positioning of:

• her Dominant Hand
• with Full Palmar Contact with her Chest
• Held over Heart

in addition to her:

• Central Forehead/Medial Eyebrow Contraction and Elevation
• Just before and as she begins to say the word, "Love"

is a nonverbal-verbal cluster indicating a very high degree of both empathy and sincerity.

Summary: Greta Gerwig's nonverbal display during Guillermo del Toro's acceptance speech is classic - and reliable body language behavior demonstrating both her high sincerity and elevated empathy quotients.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3168: Connor McDavid on 2015 NHL Draft Lottery Day - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Connor McDavid, who's predicted by many to be a Wayne Gretzky-caliber player, is shown in the above video during the 2015 NHL Team Draft Lottery (18 April 2015). Although the respective teams will not announce their player choices' until 26-27 June, a lot of people have speculated that the young hockey phenom does not what to play for the Edmonton Oilers - the team who drew first choice.

What follows is a partial body language analysis of Connor McDavid.

McDavid is shown here just after the 2015 NHL team draft order was announced. He knows now that he'll probably be picked by the Edmonton Oilers. His Loose Forward Lip Purse (5:05) (as opposed to a tight lip purse or a lateral lip purse) shown here indicates his clandestine disagreement and/or his clandestine plan. This nonverbal tells us that he knows he must not voice his true feelings aloud - which, particularly for being only 18 years old, we will see momentarily - he does a fairly good job (yet not a perfect one). It's helpful to think of this expression as, "I'm not going to show (or tell) all my cards (plan)" or "I'm going to make them think one thing, but not my true feelings/plan."

His very prolonged false watch adjust is a very common anxiety tell, but more specifically this nonverbal MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) tells us that although he's certainly a dominant personality - McDavid is trying to call-forth more alpha qualities for his upcoming TV interview. This is one of many alpha up-regulating nonverbal tells.

After he realizes another man who was accompanying him is no longer by his side, Connor McDavid takes in a moderately deep breath and reaches for his heart (5:18).

He's being pushed out of the nest. He's nervous (no surprise).

At 6:59 we see McDavid's loose forward lip purse repeated as he again is feeling strong disagreement (and he's brainstorming a way out of the Oilers) - but when this expression is made, such disagreement is rarely voiced aloud.

The loose forward lip purse nonverbal is always made by a person who believes they are the alpha relative with who(m) their interacting - AND they believe they have a good chance of success in implementing and executing their plan(s).

Few of us would be able to handle ourselves on TV as Connor McDavid did - yet he had multiple other tells (nonverbal, verbal and with respect to his paralanguage) which betrayed his true thought-emotions (What others did you note?).

Considering the millions on the line in professional sports, players (particularly rookies) would be wise to be coached in preparation for such camera appearances, lest they lose tactical contract negotiation strength, salary, bonuses and endorsements.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2573: Sarah Palin's Hand, The Pledge of Allegiance and Sincerity (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

These images, captured during the recent U.S. government shutdown at the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. shows Sarah Palin in the foreground during the "Pledge of Allegiance".

During moments of "Heart Felt" sincerity, we hold our hands close to our hearts (left side of the chest). This nonverbal sign is very natural - and is indicative of feelings of high sincerity in those who display it. It also imparts sincerity and warm feelings to those who witness it. However when others touch the right side of their chest, similar configurations etc. - while some may not be able to "put their finger on it" or break down the body language bullet points they are seeing - it leaves them feeling "ill at ease".

It is important to note that a portion of the human heart lies beneath the sternum. Also approximately 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 22,000 people may have been born with their heart on their right side (situs inversus with dextrocardia). But in absence of this congenital abnormality, when the hand gravitates away from the heart - question the sincerity.

Some may think that holding one's hand on left side of the chest is purely sociological or is solely traditional - but the etiology of this phenomenon has both physiologic and psychological causes and is very strong. Our biology dictates sincere or insincere behavior.

Of course their are many other nonverbal signals of insincerity. What others are present here?

P.S. This phenomenon of course is not limited to any one party - but can be witnessed throughout the entire political and human spectrum.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2489: Angelina Jolie and "Maleficent" - Body Language Signals of Sincerity and Disengagement (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The video above includes a few moments of Angelina Jolie in the midst of promoting her new movie, "Maleficent". Below are two very different body language signals both involving Jolie's right hand.

In this image, captured at 0:08, Ms. Jolie's right hand is placed directly on her sternum and upper left chest. The beautiful actress makes this MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) with full palmar contact - thus maximum contact is made above her heart. 

Angelina of course recently has undergone major surgery - thus Maleficent is her first post-surgery film. This nonverbal signal is a strong indication she has a very high level of sincerity about her joy to back doing what she does so well.




If Mrs. Brad Pitt would have touched with only the finger/thumb tips, this body language would have indicated a significant lack of sincerity.

Those who consistently touch over their hearts with full contact of the hand also have high empathy quotients.

This second posture proved difficult to capture on a still image, however when the video is viewed, one can clearly tell that Ms. Jolie had her right hand in her pocket when she was speaking about how, "... Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite ...[breathy laugh] ... No surprise ... um, I, I was terrified of her, but I was so drawn to her ..."  

It is relatively unusual to see a woman, particularly a woman seen on camera so often, with a hand in her front pocket during a public statement. Such a nonverbal display suggests a significant level of a lack of emotional comfort and disengagement. This low confidence level display within this context - and via a movie super star - is highly suggestive of deception with her statement (not with being on-stage). Ms. Jolie's favorite character was almost certainly NOT Maleficent, but Sleeping Beauty. The princess. She who found her prince.
