Body Language Analysis No. 4317: Scott Pruitt Confronted in Restaurant by Kristin Mink - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Scott Pruitt was recently confronted by Kristin Mink in a D.C. area restaurant. Ms. Mink is a sixth-grade teacher and mother. While holding her two-year-old son, she spoke briefly to the chief administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

What follows is a partial analysis of Scott Pruitt's nonverbal behavior.

Beginning at 0:00 Kristin Mink says to Scott Pruitt, “Hi. Ah, I just wanted to urge you to resign, um, for what you’re doing to the environment in our country. This is my son. He loves animals. He loves clean air. He loves clean water. Meanwhile, you’re slashing strong fuel standards for cars and trucks for the benefit of big corporations. Ah, you’ve been paying um, fifty bucks a night to stay in a D.C. condo that’s connected to an energy lobbying firm, while approving their dirty-sands pipeline. Um, we deserve to have somebody at the EPA who actually does protect our environment, somebody who believes in climate change and takes it seriously for the benefit of all of us, including our children. Um, so I would urge you to resign before your scandals push you out.”

During 0:07, just after Ms. Mink says, "... I just wanted to urge you to resign, um, for what you’re doing to the environment in our country...", Scott Pruitt displays a Tongue-in-Cheek nonverbal. In this context, a tongue-in-cheek sign is associated with smugness, arrogance, and the thought-emotions of "I won"/"I beat you"/"You just lost".

Please watch this video at regular and 1/2 speeds on a larger screen to more fully appreciate the dynamics of this behavior.

During 0:10, just after Kristin Mink says, "This is my son. He loves animals. He loves clean air.", Pruitt's mid-face takes on a display of Disgust. Note the momentary tightening of the area between his nose and upper lip (the mustache area) and the flaring of his right nostril (Because we can't fully view his left face from this angle, it's also possible that this expression is only present on his right side - and therefore is representative of Contempt).

Notice that Pruitt's right forehead muscles are contracted and elevated. Again, we cannot view his full left forehead, but if this dynamic is unilateral, it represents feelings of Disbelief/Incredulity (Because his center forehead muscles are not contracted, either this is indeed an incredulity tell [right side only] - or the EPA chief has undergone rather heavy Botox treatments of his mid-forehead).

During 0:17, we see Mr. Pruitt display a second, more overt, tongue-in-cheek display, just after Ms. Mink says, "... you’re slashing strong fuel standards for cars and trucks ...", This is representative of additional smugness, arrogance, and thought-emotions of "I won"/"I beat you"/"You just lost".

Simultaneously, Pruitt is also closing his eyes in a prolonged blink. This is a blocking behavior - his psyche is attempting to shut-out and distance himself from what he's witnessing/receiving.

At 0:25, just after Ms. Mink says, "... you’ve been paying um, fifty bucks a night to stay in a D.C. condo that’s connected to an energy lobbying firm ...", Scott Pruitt sits back, reorienting his torso farther from Kristin Mink in an additional attempt at distancing himself from her and the ramifications of her statements.

During 0:28 - 0:29, just after Ms. Mink says, "... while approving their dirty-sands pipeline ...", Scott Pruitt displays an amalgam of the emotions of Disgust, Bitterness, Regret, and Anger.

It's important to point out that, although the EPA Administrator's regret may be arising from several sources - the most obvious cause of Pruitt's regret in this moment is the fact that he's being confronted in public while being filmed.

After the 0:25 mark, Scott Pruitt covered his right hand with his left hand. In this context, this dynamic is symptomatic of his psyche trying to down-regulate his strong feelings. In addition, Pruitt's ring finger and middle finger can be seen repeatedly contracting and partially extending. His finger twitching is indicative of his anxiety and more specifically, his impatience for Ms. Mink to finish.

SUMMARY: EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt displayed smugness-arrogance, incredulity, disgust (and/or contempt), bitterness, regret, impatience, anxiety, and anger - while Kristin Mink confronted him in a D.C. area restaurant.

Body Language Analysis No. 4298: LeBron James Walks Out of Post Game Press Conference after Game One Loss - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

The Cleveland Cavaliers lost the first game of the 2018 NBA finals to the Golden State Warriors 124 - 114 in overtime on Thursday night. It was a phenomenal game marred by several controversies at the end. Perhaps the most unusual of these involved Cleveland's J.R. Smith. With 4.7 seconds to go in regulation, Cleveland's George Hill missed his second free throw which would have given the Cavs a one-point lead. Cleveland's J.R. Smith grabbed the offensive rebound quite close to the basket with 4.0 seconds left - only to take the ball out to midcourt - then passing it to Hill with less than a second left. Hill took an off-balanced three (or long two) point shot with 0.1 left on the clock, but it was blocked. Most feel that J.R. Smith's actions probably cost Cleveland the game.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of LeBron James' response to questions regarding J.R. Smith at the post-game press conference.

This image was captured at 0:51 in the above video, just after ESPN's Mark Schwartz asked Lebron, "Do you know if he [J.R. Smith] knew the score?"

Notice that LeBron's upper eyelids are partially closed as he rolls his eyes. An eye roll is a conscious or edge-of-consciousness display of:

• Contempt

   and

• Impatient Dismissal

As LeBron turns away to leave, his upper eyelids entirely close for a few seconds. Such prolonged eyelid closure (or partial closure) is a form of psychological blocking behavior - further amplifying his dismissal of and contempt for Schwartz.

A second after Schwartz says, "Thank you", James' raises his right forehead and eyebrow in a moment of incredulity (notice that his center and left forehead are relaxed).

As he's walking out of the press conference, LeBron James points at David Schwartz and says, "Be better tomorrow".  In almost every context, Index finger (forefinger) pointing is highly offensive and patronizing across all cultures.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3920: Jason Chaffetz and Elijah Cummings - No evidence that Michael Flynn followed the law - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, The White House announced that they are refusing to provide any documents relative to the investigation of Michael Flynn (Donald Trump's former national security adviser).

Also, earlier today, Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Chairman of the House Oversight Committee and its ranking Democrat, Elijah Cummings (D-MD) held a brief press conference. The video above is a portion of that exchange. A portion of it is transcribed here along with a partial nonverbal analysis.

Manu Raju: "Do you believe that Michael Flynn broke the law from either not disclosing it, these payments on the security clearance, or not getting permission for getting these, ah, foreign payments?"

Jason Chaffetz: "Ah, personally I see no information, or no data to support the notion that General Flynn complied with the law - and that is - he was supposed to seek permission and receive permission from both the Secretary of State - and the Secretary of the Army prior to traveling to Russia to - not only to accept that payment to - but to engage in that activity. I see no evidence that he actually - did that..."

The image above was captured during 0:13 of the above video. Note Representative Chaffetz's forehead. Its left half is dramatically contracted upward, secondarily also raising his left eyebrow. This is strongly indicative of disbelief. Throughout the entire time he's speaking and for a second or so afterward, Rep. Chaffetz's left forehead and eyebrow maintain this configuration.

At this same moment, Representative Cummings is experiencing and displaying three emotions - anger, contempt, and disgust - the Venn diagrams of these all overlap. Note the extreme tightening of his mid-face, the greater contraction/elevation of his right mid-face, the flaring of his nostrils, clenching of his jaw, dimpling of the anterior aspect of his chin, the thinning of his lips (particularly the upper lip), and the lowering of his inner (medial) eyebrows.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3676: Colin Kaepernick Says He Be Sitting Down During the National Anthem - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

It is of course now common knowledge that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is refusing to stand during the National Anthem before opening ceremonies of NFL football games. Although Kaepernick has exercised this civil disobedience for entire 2016 preseason - his action was not first publicly noted until he did so while in uniform before a game versus the Green Bay Packers on 26 August 2016.

In the video above, beginning at 1:01 Colin Kaepernick continues, "You can become a cop in six months and don't have to have - the same amount of training as a cosmetologist. That's, that's insane. I mean - someone that's holding a curling iron has more education and more training - than people that have a gun and are going out on the street to protect us."

Throughout much of this statement, Kaepernick is projecting two strong emotions. The image below was capture during 1:09 as he says, "... insane ...".

Note Kaepernick's right mustache area is contracted (tightened) and elevated along with the right corner of his mouth. His right nostril is also flared. Simultaneously - we also can see the incredulous elevation of the QB's left eyebrow.

Summary: Colin Kaepernick is expressing both a contempt and disbelief toward the governing institutions in what he feels is a significant lack of training of police officers.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3408: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Star Wars and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Daisy Ridley and John Boyega were guests on The Graham Norton Show recently promoting (what else?) Star Wars: The Force Awakens. When actors are interviewed, it provides a fantastic forum in which to learn body language - for even though they are essentially, professional liars - skilled and paid to deceive us (within the context of a social contract known as acting [e.g., we WANT to be fooled]), when Daisy is just being Daisy and John is just being John, they no better at hiding their true feelings than are the rest of us.

Whenever the central forehead is contracted and elevated (aka a CFC or elevated-CFC) simultaneous with a partial mouth smile - there are three primary emotions which should always come to mind. One of these body language tells is exampled wonderfully here on Ms. Ridley's face.

This image (cropped from the one above) was captured (during 0:56) just after Daisy recounts her father's reaction after she told him she had be casted in a Star Wars film.

Her father said, "Oh, I was always more of a Trek fan".

It's important to note that this partial "mouth smile" is not a sincere smile at all. In addition, notice that Ridley's eyebrows are also elevated. This is a classic expression of incredulity/disbelief. What are the other two emotions seen with an elevated CFC in conjunction with a partial (and insincere) mouth smile?

Although we cannot see his whole face, what emotion is John Boyega feeling at this same moment?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3227: Bobby Jindal's, "... I am tanned ..." remark - What does his Body Language tell us? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Regardless of their political affiliation, nationality, ethnicity, skin color or affinity for tanning beds - most everyone found Governor Bobby Jindal's reference yesterday to being "tanned" extremely odd and prejudicial. Yet what do his nonverbal signals show during this statement?

Beginning at about 16:14, Governor Jindal says, ".... In case it's not clear by now - I am running for President without permission from headquarters in Washington D.C. [applause] ... but rest assured, I am tanned, rested and ready for this fight ..."

This photo is from 16:41 just after the Louisiana Governor says, "... I am ready for this fight ..."












In both of these moments Bobby Jindal displays a (lower) central forehead contraction with a (social aka false aka insincere) mouth smile. Regardless of how the mouth is configured, whenever there is a simultaneous central forehead contraction (CFC) - the "smile" is never sincere.

Now in the governor's defense - we all display this expression from time-to-time. When? We make this expression when we feel arrogant (for as human beings, we all occasionally feel arrogant - yet this is not the only expression of arrogance), or when we feel incredulous (and of course there are other nonverbal signals of disbelief) or when we are feeling contempt (hopefully not too often, but we all sometimes feel this emotion - and, again, there are other facial signs of contempt). Was the governor feeling any of these here? If so which one? If the (false) mouth-smile is seen together with a CFC is chronically - what very reliably does this tell us?

If we go back and look at Governor Jindal's mouth - we see that in both of these moments (when there was also a pause in his speaking) his mouth was vectored primarily laterally - rather than vertically (as it would have been seen with a sincere smile). One way to help make this distinction is the tension visible in his "mustache area" (a term used regardless of any facial hair or gender). The mouth in the second photo projects an additional component of bitterness. Why?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3162: Robert Downey Jr. walks out of Interview - Star walks out when asked about past - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today this video was published on YouTube. In it, Robert Downey Jr. speaks of his thoughts on super heroes, Iron Man as well as his latest film "Avengers: Age of Ultron". However the talented actor did not care for Krishnan Guru-Murthy's questions (along with most everyone who watched it) and he walked out early. This interview is so very full of nonverbal signals - below is a partial analysis of some of the more telling moments.

Downey displays some Subtle Contempt 

Do you detect some signals of disbelief as well?

His contempt is slightly more expressed - although still mild-moderate. Many would falsely label this a "bit of a smile" or a "polite smile" or "social smile".

Note also his left eyebrow is further raised signaling incredulity (e.g., "I can't believe you're making this inference!").

What other nonverbal signals here telegraph some anger?

Sincere Smile (Downey's smiling at what he feels is a ridiculous situation - thus partially sarcastic-sardonic and to a degree - a [healthy] coping mechanism)

Downey looks up and slightly to HIS left while temporarily focused at a distance. This is significant for Visual Recall when Guru-Murthy asks him about a quote Downey gave to the New York Times. He is trying to and/or visualizing the quote, in print, in his mind's eye.

After the 5:00 minute mark, Mr. Downey's respiration increased. An even greater increase in his breathing is seen about 5:25 mark.

Robert Downey Jr. displays an extended blink as Guru-Murthy implies Downey's lack of comfort level with the subject matter. It's at this exact moment that Downey "Emotionally Red-lined" with respect to reaching the mental state of realistically walking out of the interview.

Robert Downey Jr. says, "Your foot is starting to jump a little bit, you better get to your next question."

Note Downey's Deep Inhalation after his statement.

When he is visible, Guru-Murthy's legs and feet were much of the time in motion along with frequent readjustments in his chair signifying significant anxiety.

(As a body language expert, I must say I was tickled pink when Downey called out Guru-Murthy on this nonverbal display - implying its significance. However in YOUR day-to-day world, the vast majority of the time it is best to keep such knowledge to oneself thus maintaining a profound advantage.)

A greater increase in respiration is noted at about 6:00 - as Robert Downey Jr.'s breathing even becomes significantly audible. The Videographer notices this significant emotional change and thus zooms in.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3109: Why Chris Christie Will Never Win The White House in 2016 (or the Republican Nomination) - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Bridgegate and other missteps aside, Chris Christie will never win the 2016 republican nomination, let alone the White House. While many admire his "straight talk" approach - others will sight his outbursts and temper. He has another huge interpersonal hurdle though which he has yet to clear. As with the vast majority of politicians, Christie is unaware of just how much he is lacking when it comes to emotionally connecting with the electorate. And he seems to be in a downhill slide ....

Regardless of party or political office, of course a politician will continually run up against many opposing points of view and Governor Christie surly has his share. However even when Mr. Christie is on his best behavior and his words are fairly diplomatic, his body language screams the opposite - and the audience feels it. Only those who already staunchly support a candidate will stand behind him with such dramatic disparities - for they are already blind and thus truly believe the emperor is wearing clothes. Such tone-deaf leaders will never capture the crucial middle third of the voters.

In the single moment this image was captured (and very typical of the New Jersey Governor), Chris Christie's body language projects three negative emotions:

A. Disbelief
B. Contempt
C. Disengagement

He's destroying rapport - not building it. He might as well be saying, "I can't stand you, I don't believe a word you're saying and you don't know what the *#@! you're talking about! I've already made up my mind and I'm barely tolerating being here."

Mr. Christie still has yet to learn that he can still stick be sincere and win over some of his audience at the same time.

Do you know the specific nonverbal signals in this photo indicating each of these thought-emotions? How adept are you at recognizing these signs in others? How self-aware are you in projecting them?

People don't vote with logic. They vote with their emotions. If a candidate isn't likeable - particularly during moments of disagreement, he or she will only win if the opposition is weak - and remember, this is a Presidential election. So unless Mr. Christie significantly improves his rapport building skills - nonverbal and otherwise - history will record his high water mark will be on the Jersey Shore and not the Potomac.

Oscar Pistorius's trial in the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is continuing in Pretoria, South Africa. The double amputee Olympic athlete is seen in this image in the foreground, out of focus.

In the background on the extreme left of the photo is a friend of Steenkamp's - Gina Meyers. She is seen displaying one variety of a "Critical Evaluation Cluster". Here we see the thumb of her right hand supporting the left aspect of her mandible (jaw) while her pinky finger rests on her philtrum and covers her central mouth/lips. The remainder of her fingers are on the right side of her face/cheek. This specific body language MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is termed the "Double-L" and is a nonverbal cluster highly indicative of Critical Evaluation.

Meyers's does not believe what she's hearing.

Although details are somewhat difficult to visualize in this lower resolution close-up of this same moment, Gina Meyers's right eyebrow can be seen to be elevated compared to her left side. As expected, her right forehead can also be seen in a contracted state (with evanescent furrows). This unilateral raised eyebrow is a specific facial expression telling us she is disbelief with what she is hearing and/or seeing.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2629: Sandy Hook Audio Tapes - A Body Language Sign of Disbelief (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this brief interview with three family members of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting last December, the two women (mothers of victims) display essentially identical nonverbal signals of disbelief.

Ms. Hockley's right eyebrow is elevated along with significantly more contraction of the right side of her forehead.

This is one common body language sing of incredulity. She has difficulty believing why the release of the audiotapes from the events of that terrible day would benefit the public in any way.

In a slightly less pronounced example on Ms. Marquez-Greene, we again see the right eyebrow and right forehead elevated - nonverbally signalling her disbelief in the public's value in the audio recordings release.

Pat McCrory, the Governor of North Carolina delivered the weekly republican address today. The subject was innovation at the state level. His nonverbal displays were anything but creative however.
In an effort to look like a leader, far too many politicians build walls when they believe they are building bridges. 

Throughout the majority of this address, the Governor of North Carolina's fingers are intertwined. This nonverbal (a form of a MAP, aka Manipulator, Adaptor or Pacifier) is very commonly displayed when a boss is sitting behind a desk and reprimanding a subordinate. It sends condescending and arrogant signals to the audience. The Governor is seeking to build rapport - however he is destroying it. Like almost all MAPs, the intertwined fingers also signals heightened levels of anxiety and more specifically a closed-off, defensive emotional mindset. It's utterly amazing how many of those who hold leadership positions are completely unaware of this patronizing nonverbal.

Another interesting nonverbal display gives away some the Governor's poker hand:

At the 2:51 mark, Governor McCrory's left eyebrow very briefly elevates in a beautiful example of one type (there are many) of microexpression. This signals his own disbelief at his own statement, ".... For instance, we're working on an innovative reform for Medicaid ...."
