Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3393: Syed Rizwan Farook, Tashfeen Malik, San Bernardino Shooting and Predicting Violent Behavior - Body Language (PHOTOS)

Syed Rizwan Farook

Contempt (~60%) with Disgust (~40%)

This is a quite significant level of contempt/disgust
(~7 out of 10).

Do your best to avoid anyone with this, or a similar expression.

The partial eyelid closure, while alone may often be a nonspecific nonverbal sign (or even not related), when it coexists with contempt, disgust and/or anger - the partial eyelid closure acts as an amplifier.

Pictured here are Syed Rizwan Farook (above) and his wife, Tashfeen Malik. They are the alleged perpetrators in the recent (2 Dec. 2015) mass shooting in San Bernardino, California where fourteen people were killed and twenty-one were injured. Approximately four hours later, both alleged criminals were killed in a shoot-out with the police.

Those who commit terrorist activity, mass shootings and other acts of violence will nearly always display CHRONIC expressions of Disgust and Contempt (also often there is a component of anger present). Every normal, healthy human being will occasionally feel and thus manifest the strong emotions of disgust and contempt - so it's important to stress, the CHRONIC nature of this correlation.

It's also imperative to note that while certainly not everyone who makes these expressions FREQUENTLY will go on to commit violent criminal behavior - there is an extremely high correlation of significant problems in the controlling of their temper (Impulse Control Disorder).

Any training in threat assessment should always take heed of this crucial nonverbal warning signal.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3390: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Henry Cavill is portraying what emotions? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Henry Cavill as Superman along with Ben Affleck as Batman - are both shown in this brief trailer-teaser. The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer shows Superman entering a prison of sorts where along with others, Batman is chained.

The expression on Cavill-Superman's face is characteristic of two primary and often overlapping emotions.

In this moment there is a mixture of roughly 60% anger and 40% disgust. Of course these are qualitative estimates.

In this moment a few seconds later, Cavill-Superman is displaying approximately 70% disgust and 30% anger.

While Cavill is certainly not Superman, making this expression can truly engender the very human feeling of disgust, where a moment before it was only an actor's intention.

Human beings commit many acts of violence when they are reactionary and angry - for moments, hours and days. Both disgust and contempt also tend to be relatively short-lived. Yet when violent behavior and maliciousness are perpetrated over longer time periods (e.g., months, years, etc.), there is almost always a primary emotional driver of CHRONIC disgust and/or contempt - while anger takes on a smaller role.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3374: Paris Attack Suspect Named - Salah Abdeslam - Body Language (PHOTOS)

Earlier today French authorities named Salah Abdeslam (pictured here) as one of the suspects for the 13 November Paris Attacks. Unlike seven of his alleged accomplices, Abdeslam is alive and was last seen at the French-Belgian border Saturday morning.

In this image, Abdeslam has nonverbal signals which are quite atypical for a photo taken in conjunction with public identification.

First he has a mild-moderate (3.0-3.5 out of 10.0) forward lip purse. The forward lip purse is indicative of clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. It also demonstrates a marked disparity between what is said (typically little or no disagreement) and what is felt-thought (dramatic disagreement). A person who makes a forward lip purse believes they are the relative alpha when compared with whom they're interacting. Moreover the forward lip purse also projects the belief that they believe they have a high chance of achieving their desired results.

There is also significant anger present in the moment this photo was captured - again an unusual emotion to be captured as part of an ID photograph. Take note of Abdeslam's eyelids. They are opened very slightly wider than baseline - however what is more prominent is the tension of his lower eyelids and mildly downward vectored eyebrows (more so on his inner, or medial eyebrows). Both of his nostrils are significantly flared and there is also a moderate amount of tension in the "mustache area".

When a forward lip purse and anger are seen simultaneously - there is a considerably increased likelihood for loss of temper. When this expression is seen chronically - impulse control disorder and antisocial personality disorder (sociopath personality) are virtually always present.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3354: Rape Victim (13 year old girl) Demands to Make a Statement at the Sentencing of Perpetrator - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During the above video we are witness to a rare nonverbal scenario - listening to a thirteen year-old girl - a victim of rape, making a statement to her assailant upon his sentencing. The girl’s image, video or her name are not included here and the recording of her voice has been altered.

During the 0:42 - 1:02 segment we see several "microexpressions" and “near-microexpressions” of contempt as well as a longer, but subtle expression of contempt or disgust (captured below in the still image at 1:02 - we cannot distinguish between these two emotions because we can't see all of Tobias Summer’s face). As human beings we all experience negative emotions from time-to-time, however perpetrators of violent crime will display chronic contempt and/or chronic disgust with an extremely high frequency in the time prior to when the violence is committed (and here we see it afterwards). Thus the ability to spot such subtlety  and act upon it is a very useful and important threat assessment tool. Again - it’s the chronic manifestation of these emotion that’s important with this correlation. And while not everyone who projects contempt and/or disgust with greater regularity will commit violent acts - virtually all of these individuals will have impulse control disorder (a significantly shorter temper vs. normal).

The fact that Tobias Summers is displaying the emotion of contempt and contempt/disgust in this context indicates:

1. These expressions in such a context strongly implies guilt
2. He does not show remorse
3. He has very little or no empathy
4. Strongly implies he is a sociopath (Antisocial Personality Disorder)

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3327: Chris Harper Mercer - School Shooter - Umpqua Community College near Roseburg, Oregon - Body Language Red Flags (PHOTOS)

Chris Harper Mercer
MySpace Photo

Here Mercer is displaying Disgust with a component of Contempt.

Yet another mass shooting occurred earlier today near Roseburg, Oregon. The shooter, allegedly Chris Harper Mercer killed nine people and wounded seven at Umpqua Community College. He also died in a shoot-out with law enforcement.

From a nonverbal communication point-of-view, those who will go on to commit violent crimes - particularly mass shootings, bombing and terrorist-like acts - will extremely often display expressions of chronic contempt, chronic anger and chronic disgust.

It's very important to stress the chronic nature of these expressions. For as human beings we all experience anger, disgust and contempt - yet those who perpetrate such violent crimes will virtually always display these expressions CHRONICALLY.

Moreover the use of social media allows people to put forth a photo which characterizes the emotion which they wish to project out to the World. Thus a Facebook profile pic is essentially a form of a Rorschach test in reverse. Those who project chronic negative emotions are therefore telegraphing their intentions.

It's important to point out that, of course not nearly all people who chronically display anger, contempt or disgust will commit mass crimes. Yet such chronicity of expression is a signal of a personality disorder, impulse control disorder, or other mental disorder.

Chris Harper Mercer
Also from MySpace

Here Mercer's expression is more subtle - he's displaying more Contempt with a lesser proportion of Disgust (yet they both are still present).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3295: Jim Harbaugh, Michigan Football and Predicting Violent Behavior (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The University of Michigan made a mistake in hiring Jim Harbaugh. However this judgement is not based on his ability to coach football.

It's not surprising that during his first Michigan Media day as a head coach, Harbaugh would be a bit nervous (an excerpt included in the above video). Yet he's been in such spotlights before many times. Harbaugh was of course a starting quarterback for Michigan as well as the Chicago bears. Later he became head coach for the University of San Diego and then Stanford. In the NFL he coached the San Francisco 49ers all the way to Super Bowl XLVII.

And it's no secret that some of Harbaugh's previous players have complained about his temper - while other's have come to his defense. From a strictly nonverbal perspective, Harbaugh displays several warning signals of poor impulse control - one of which is discussed here.

When a person chronically displays widely open eyelids (barring a medical condition such as thyroid eye disease [Graves' disease], injury, botched surgery, side effects from Botox injections, etc.) - there will virtually always be accompanying behavioral problems. Jim Harbaugh's eyelids are indeed chronically opened very widely - and very significantly, in settings of where they are emotionally out of context. This disparity is a huge red flag. Although there are other associated disorders, very often this chronic "white and wide" expression indicates an impulse control disorder. There is a very high likelihood Jim Harbaugh will lose his temper in a highly significant manner. It could be tomorrow, it may be next month or five years from now. Most likely this will occur in preparation for a big game or in the midst of Michigan having a particularly bad losing season.

Jim Harbaugh was not well vetted psychologically/behaviorally. Michigan's desire to recapture the glory of their past will come back to bite them.

Note: This is not the only nonverbal signal of impulse control disorder and there are people with this condition who do not exhibit this body language sign. Also, as stated above, this chronic widely open eyelid configuration can also be indicative of other behavioral disorders.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3249: Chattanooga Military Mass Shooting - Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez and a very Telling Facial Expression (PHOTOS)

It's difficult to look into the face of a killer. This image is the mug shot of Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez taken in April of this year when he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Yesterday Abdulazeez opened fired on two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He killed four marines and wounded three people before he was fatally shot by police officers. One man, a navy petty officer, later died from his wounds. My deepest condolences to their families and loved-ones.

From a nonverbal perspective Abdulazeez's facial expression displays clear yet not extreme contempt. On a scale from 0 - 10 (with 10 being maximum) his level of contempt expression is about a 4. Those who perpetrate mass shootings and crimes of terrorism virtually always display chronic expressions contempt, disgust and/or anger (Can you consistently identify moderate or subtle examples of these expressions?). Of course this does not mean that all those who display the nonverbal signals consistent with these emotions will go on to commit these or other crimes. However those individuals who display such patterns of behavior will predictably have much higher incidences of :
  • Narcissistic personality disorder
  • Impulse control problems
  • Predilections toward violence
It's amazing how many otherwise socially adept people will misidentify Abdulazeez's expression - and therefore his emotions as well. In addition, the further anyone who views this and all other expressions are from their emotional baseline - the more likely they are to mislabel the feelings behind a face. Thus learning how to accurately read nonverbal expressions (and all body language) allows us to use these as tools of objectivity when, as human beings, we are inherently biased - and often extremely so.

How objective are you? Can you spot disparities between what is said and what is felt? Can you see problems and behaviors before they happen?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3172: Jameis Winston, the NFL Draft, Body Language and Predicting Violent Behavior (PHOTO)

The 2015 NFL Draft begins today. Due to sexual allegations raised against Jameis Winston (which after an investigation, were later dropped) he may not be chosen first by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - as, in an alternate Universe, he otherwise would.

As healthy human beings, we all occasionally feel the emotions and thus display expressions of both contempt and - as Jameis Winston is here - disgust (Because we can't visualize the full right side of his face - we also can't say for sure if Winston also has some concomitant components of contempt). Yet those who display either of these facial configurations chronically - have significantly higher tendencies toward narcissistic personality disorder. In addition, those who express chronic disgust and/or contempt have a greater likelihood of problems with impulse control (losing their temper) as well as violent acts.

In the image above, Jameis Winston, the recent Florida State Seminoles quarterback and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, has significant facial features of disgust (perhaps a 3 on a 1-10 scale). His mild nostril flaring and the tightening of other mid-facial musculature (particularly of his "mustache area") are significant for disgust. Further "disgust amplifiers" include the backwards tilting (extension) of his neck & head - as well as the partial closure of Winston's eyelids.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3107: Erich Milton Nowsch Jr. - Las Vegas Road Rage Suspect - Body Language of Predicting Violence (PHOTO)

The suspect for the 13 February 2015 Las Vegas, Nevada Road Rage shooting is now in custody. Erich Milton Nowsch Jr, 19, - pictured above - was arrested earlier today for the alleged shooting of Tammy Meyers. Meyers passed away on Valentine's Day.

In the light of the escalation of both foreign and domestic terrorism and other malicious acts, much has been made recently of the ability to predict violent behavior. There is, of course, nothing absolute here - no one has a crystal ball. Yet there are significant body language behaviors which are profoundly valuable where threat assessment is concerned. Two of these are discussed below.

Everyone will feel and display the emotions of contempt and disgust from time to time. We're human - we're supposed to experience these - we're allowed. Yet those who CHRONICALLY display either disgust and/or contempt have a significantly increased predilection towards impulse control problems, narcissistic personality disorder and violence. In addition and of profound importance - those who post images and/or videos with nonverbal signals consistent with contempt or disgust on social media are, in a very real way, projecting an even longer-term or hyper-chronic emotion onto the World. It's a big red flag.

There are, of course, other predictors of narcissism, short tempers and violence- yet too often people overlook, minimize or even dismiss others' body language entirely. These are but two nonverbals, yet when displayed for longer durations or especially in the context of social media - they should never be overlooked.

In the image above, displayed on his Facebook page, the suspect of this crime - Erich Milton Nowsch Jr. is projecting a facial expression with nonverbal elements of both disgust and contempt.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3097: Buddies at the Grammys? What Does Kanye West REALLY Think of Taylor Swift? Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Last night at the 2015 Grammy Awards, Kanye West and Taylor Swift were talking and photographed together. And while Swift may have forgiven West, Kanye is just pretending to tolerate let alone like Swift.

Remember back in 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards? Taylor Swift had just won Best Female Video for "You Belong With Me", when Kanye West grabbed the microphone and told everyone that Beyoncé's video "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" which was nominated for the same award was "one of the best videos of all time." He was then removed from the remainder of the Awards because of his actions. Later in the evening when Beyoncé won the award for Best Video of the year - she invited Taylor Swift back on stage so she could finish her acceptance speech. West was widely criticized for his actions including by President Obama who called West a "jackass".

Flash forward five and a half years - in the image above captured last night, Kanye West's facial expression indicates a considerable degree of contempt towards Taylor Swift. As mentioned in the previous post (Nonverbal Communication Analysis 3096: Kanye West's Body Language at the 2015 Grammys), those who chronically display contempt or disgust have impulse control problems, are narcissistic, and have a tendency towards violence. While West may be able to "push out" false-emotions for a few moments here and there, his true emotions are readily and very frequently nonverbally leaked.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3096: Kanye West's Body Language at the 2015 Grammys (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night at the 2015 Grammy Awards, Kanye West took the stage once again without invitation. When Beck was awarded the Album of the Year West walked on stage - then quickly left - giving everyone a flashback from the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when West interrupted Taylor Swift's award acceptance.

Many tried to pass this off as some type of an attempt at humor. It was nothing of the sort.

Afterwards West said, “Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé.” as well as, “Y’all know what it meant when‘Ye walked on the stage.

The image below shows Kanye West's as he walked off stage. Beck can be seen in the background. West's expression is classic for the emotion of disgust. Both disgust and contempt, when displayed chronically (as Kanye does), are signals of those with poor impulse control. Furthermore, people who very often show these facial nonverbals have a significant tendency towards physical action and violence rather using dialog and diplomacy to solve disagreements. In addition these individuals have a preponderance towards Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3064: Pastor Recounts Punching a Child in the Chest - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this YouTube viral, video a pastor recounts a time when he allegedly hit a minor. In his own words ".... And I walked over to him and I went BAMB! ... I punched in the chest as hard as I... I crumpled the kid ... I just crumpled him". There are many body language tells here - the following is a partial nonverbal analysis of some key moments of his own telling of this event.

0:31 Inward Lip Roll (ILR).

An inward lip roll is seen during moments when there is an attempt to suppress an emotion that is far from emotional baseline. Many times it's anger, although it can be sadness, etc. or even joy-happiness.

This is a close up of the above frame. The ILR can also be seen during moments of physical activity which require an increase focusing of thought.

Here the pastor is reenacting his alleged physical assault on another person. Just prior to this moment he described the individual as "... and we were outside one day, a youth group - and ah he was just, just trying [repeated closed fist punching gesture 0:22-0:24] to push my buttons - just kinda not taking the Lord serious" [deep inhaling breath at 0:28]. In this context his nonverbal behavior (inward lip roll) in his re-telling indicates he is re-living his anger experienced during the original event. He is holding onto his anger.

0:33 Both contempt and disgust expressions are present here (contempt > disgust)

Tie Adjust (an alpha up-regulator) and in this moment it's a signal of his anxiety and rationalizing his behavior

0:33.5 Contempt-Disgust persists

Those who easily and/or chronically display contempt portend what other behaviors?

0:37

Tongue Jut

Signaling "I've been bad", "I've been caught" and a self-deprecating emotional tone

0:41 second Tie Adjust

Once again, Dialing up his alpha, a repeated signal of anxiety and rationalizing his behavior

There certainly may be times when a pastor or anyone may fabricate a story to dramatically illustrate a message - and while this is a possibility here, this cluster of nonverbal signals strongly suggests the events occurred as he described them. His need to tell this event is very similar psychologically to a criminal returning to the scene of a crime.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3006: Charles "Chase" Merritt - Arrested and Charged with Murder of the Entire McStay Family (PHOTOS)

Charles "Chase" Merritt was arrested on Wednesday for the alleged 2010 murder of the McStay Family - Joseph McStay, his business partner, his wife Summer, and children - Gianni (4) and Joseph Jr. (3).

The McStay family went missing in February 2010 from their home near San Diego and their remains were found in November 2013 in a remote area of San Bernadino County, California.

In this old photo of Merritt, he is displaying a very subtle amount of contempt (1 out of 10 or even less).

This image of Merritt was taken in 2013. His facial expression also has contempt present. Although he also has other emotions in this moment, the component of contempt is approximately 3 out of 10.

This is Merritt's mugshot taken two days ago. The contempt is more pure here (about 3.5 - 4 out of 10)

Every human being displays contempt on an occasional basis. However those who make this expression chronically tend strongly towards poor impulse control (short temper), lower empathy quotients, prevalent ego-centric behaviors such as narcissism, sociopathic behavior, child-abuse and a predilection toward violence. When assessing for treats - ignore this nonverbal red flag at your peril. Stay away.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3003: Chris Brown - Using Body Language Signs to Predict Violence (PHOTOS)

Chris Brown is in the news again. A lot of drama is being played out between Brown and Tamar Braxton, Karrueche Tran, and most recently Adrienne Bailon via social media.

While we all occasionally feel the emotions of disgust and contempt, Chris Brown displays variations of both of these chronically. Those who experience either of these emotions on a chronic basis have significantly more problems with impulse control, violent behavior, child abuse, lower empathy levels as well as higher rates of both narcissism and sociopath behaviors.

Thus the ability to accurately identify the expressions of contempt and disgust - even subtle very subtle examples, is profoundly important with threat assessment and ensuring personal safety.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2993: Fight in Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport - Passengers Break Up Homophobic Attack - Threat Assessment Warning Signs (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

There was an interesting and very illustrative incident caught on camera phone today at Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport. A man who was very probably under the influence of drugs or alcohol (not confirmed yet though) yelled, used profane language and homophobic slurs at another man while others tried to de-escalate the situation. The perpetrator also repeatedly using obscene gestures and other inflammatory body language.

What nonverbal cues occurred here which, with very high probability, indicated that this obviously deranged individual would assault someone?

The answer is the repeated incursions into the personal space of others (and similar behaviors) by the man in question. Whenever you see repeated deliberate invasions of the personal space, be warned - for there is a very high likelihood that violence will ensue. While those passengers around him were coming to another man's aid, in infinite other settings where security personnel were not so readily available and security and surveillance are not foremost in other travelers minds', this assault would have progressed rapidly and become much more violent.

Of course this is an assault. Security should have been called immediately at this time (perhaps before, but no earlier video is available).

The perpetrator can be seen giving the middle finger gesture (a universal emblem of profanity) with both hands to another man while leaning towards him.

This "double-bird with leaning forward" nonverbal cluster is highly predictive of potential violence.

Although he is not in this man's personal space at this moment, the act of leaning toward him with this (and similar) body language is an amplifier of personal space violation - essentially closing the space between him and the person/people to whom it's directed - ergo the 5th encroachment.

A psychological line is crossed here. This is another high-likelihood predictor of violence about to begin.

The major assault begins

While personal space varies depending on the country or culture (e.g. closer in Southern Europe with greater distances in Northern Europe), city density (closer in New York City and further apart in Salt Lake City) and the micro-environment/building use (closer in an airport than in a library) - "Personal Distance" is usually defined as 1.5 to 4.0 feet (46-122 cm). Anything closer is considered "Intimate Distance" and usually reserved for family, close friends and lovers (although in scenarios such as subways or airplanes are temporary exceptions). "Social Distance" is from 4 to 12 feet (1.2-3.7 meters) and "Public Distance" is anything greater than 12 feet (3.7 meters).

It seems that the security personnel should have stepped in much sooner, particularly at an airport and a major one at that. Deliberate and provocative encroachment into another person's personal space should never be taken as someone "just venting", arguing or discussing. Disengage, seek shelter and/or law enforcement immediately.
