Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3161: John Stamos Announces Full House is Coming Back on Jimmy Kimmel - Body Language regarding Bob Saget (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It certainly is not the cultural equivalent of Harper Lee's upcoming second novel, "Go Set a Watchman" - yet the return of the '80s-90s T.V. show, "Full House" was announced last night by John Stamos on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

A body language analysis of a few key moments gives us insight into what John Stamos was thinking - and whether or not Bob Saget is (yet?) on-board for the series return.

Beginning at 1:01, Kimmel asks, "Will ah, your friend - your friend Bob Saget has to be on it, right?"

Stamos' first "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") occurs during 1:06 just as Kimmel says, "... on it ... "

"Well - he bet-, he better be."

His second tongue jut (with a lick lip) just after word "be".

Kimmel: "He will be on it"

Stamos:"Yeah" - rapidly following with his third tongue jut, lick lip (during 1:09)











In this context, John Stamos' tongue jut/lizard tongue indicates his affirmative of, "Yeah" is deceptive. His earlier statement, "He bet-, he better be" tells us that Stamos feels a significant "stepping over the line" anxiety. Stamos feels he's put either the production company or Bob Saget (or both) in a difficult spot (one of them probably directed him to do so). The tongue jut is the psyche revealing to outside world, "I've been bad", "I've been caught", "I've done something foolish" or "I've gotten away with something" (Navarro)(when a tongue jut is clustered with other nonverbal signals it can indicate excitement or sincere self-deprecation).

This example serves an excellent illustration of how the ability to interpret nonverbal behavior in real-time is profoundly valuable in the context of the sales process, a negotiation, deposition, testimony, etc. 

What other nonverbal signals did Stamos display which reinforce his deception.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3081: More Bill Belichick Body Language Deception Deflategate Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This video comprises most of one of Bill Belichick's recent press conferences regarding deflategate.

During this appearance Belichick displays mutliple examples of what is known as a "Tongue Jut" aka "Lizard Tongue". Tom Brady also showed us this during his press conference. Within this body language cluster-context, this nonverbal indicates that "I've been caught" or "I've been bad".

Think of this as the New England Patriots' coach's psyche calling him out in a subconscious display of self-deprecation.

"I think we all know that quarterbacks, kickers, specialists have certain preferences on footballs. They know a lot more about it than I do - they're a lot more sensitive to it than I am [Tongue Jut] ....."

These multiple displays of Tongue Juts are key nonverbal indicators telling us that Bill Belichick is lying.

These Tongue Juts are certainly not the only indicators of deception. In addtion they don't occur with every lie, but Belichick has a predilection for them.

Tom Brady - The Return of The Lie.

In this second clip of the New England Patriots' quarterback's press conference from this past Thursday, we can see many more examples of nonverbal behavior indicative of deception. As mentioned in a previous post on this same appearance, in the future this video will be held up a text-book example of the body language of lying. What follows is a partial analysis.

Both of these microexpression of fear are partial and subtle - thus best appreciated within the dynamic context of video (and even on slow motion).

Tongue Jut (aka Lizard Tongue)

A tongue jut in this cluster context indicates: "I've been bad" or "I've been caught".

 
Think of the Tongue Jut as a form of self-deprecation in the midst of a lie.

"... You know, obviously, the NFL would like to figure out what happened in this situation [another Tongue Jut / Lizard Tongue at 2:26] ummm ...."

Again this is Brady's psyche calling itself out essentially saying, "I've been bad" or "I've been caught".

Most notably here, at 2:31 (during the word "... opportunity ..."), we see both a Suppressed Smile of Duping Delight and Blushing - in this context highly indicative of deception.

A reporter continues about the fact that the NFL had not yet questioned Brady,
"... You know it's odd that they haven't - at this point - you know - you're the quarterback and the center of the story right now - and the leagues' officials investigating haven't talked to - you indicates to a lot of people that they're letting this drag and twist in the wind."

Brady: "I'm not sure."

Another reporter: "Have you been told whether they will - to talk to you?"

Brady: "I'm not sure." This answer makes no sense - it's simply not a logical response to this question. It reminds many of a politician's answer when trying to dodge answering a question. Either his anxiety is excessive (e.g. he doesn't perceive the question as it was asked) - or he deliberately is re-iterating an evasive response.

Conclusion: Tom Brady is lying about his knowledge of the footballs in question being deliberately deflated. He is the only one who would have, at least in part, orchestrated such an act. While Brady is certainly no Oscar-worthy performer - he can play quarterback rather well.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3073: Russell Westbrook - Execution Interview - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Golden State Warriors, 127 - 115, and after a triple double (17 pts., 17 ast., 15 reb.) Russell Westbrook was doing his best Marshawn Lynch impression. Now being referred to as "The Execution Interview" because the three time NBA all-star answered, "We did a good job executing" (and very slight variations on that script) six times in the 89 second interview.

What follows is a partial body language analysis of Russell Westbrook's "Execution interview".

A partially "Suppressed Smile" is displayed by Westbrook after he says, "... execution ..." for the second time. This is a form of "Duping Delight" since his answers are a thinly veiled acting job.

Shortly after this duping delight display, Westbrook shows us a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") which in this context is a nonverbal indicator for "I've been bad" or "I just got caught".

Depending on the other nonverbals with which it's accompanied, a tongue jut has what other meanings?

Eyelids opened very wide along with Tongue Jut

After a report asks, "Are you upset with something?" and then Westbrook pauses and says, "I just don't like you .... nah." ... he then displays another tongue jut.

While the reporter and Westbrook may not have been best friends before this moment - Westbrook already had reasons for his near monosyllabic responses - and this reporter's question led to this particular answer and added to Westbrook's negative attitude, yet their lack of friendship here was not the initiating factor in this awkward interview (e.g. for Westbrook's absence of diplomacy).

Westbrook's rapid fluttering of eyelids here as he asks reporter, "You got enough questions?" Is a strong signal of contempt, condescension and anger.

Another occurrence of Duping Delight is seen once again in the last fraction of a second of the video.

When a person turns away or even puts his/her head down for a moment, the concentration to suppress their joy is often broken and the duping delight "leaks" out.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2754: Einstein, Gravity Waves, The Big Bang and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Today a monumental discovery was announced which both helps to confirm the occurrence of "The Big Bang" roughly 13.798 Billion years ago - as well as the existence of "Gravitational Waves" and supports the possibility of the Multiverse. Such gravity waves (which are truly ripples in space-time) were first predicted 98 years ago by Albert Einstein as part of his General Theory of Relativity. Physicists have been searching for their proof ever since.

Depending on the other nonverbals present, a Tongue Jut may indicate either: an act of self-deprecation, excitement, "I've been bad", "I just got caught", "I've done a foolish thing", "I've got away with something". 

Which of these apply to Dr. Einstein in the image above?

Armpit Exposed

Men primarily display this body language when they are feeling very alpha as well as significant emotional comfort.

Armpit exposure can be indicative of other emotions depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered. 

Contempt

The former Princeton Professor is displaying mild contempt in this moment. 

A Suppressed sincere smile with a component of contempt

Components of dismissiveness, smugness and some waning elements of a sincere smile (although not purely sincere) as if to say "Yeah, I told you so."

In this moment, Professor Einstein is feeling apprehensiveness and regret

Here we see a partially suppressed sincere smile with the necessary components of a relaxed (relaxed, non-contracted) forehead, concave up furrows present in each lower eyelid, upward directed cheek muscle contraction with corners of Albert's mouth directed primarily upward.

Sincere laughter of significant magnitude will like a sincere smile have a component of eyelid closure.

The more extreme the laughter, the greater the eyelid closure.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2676: Nancy Pelosi, Chris Christie, Bling and a Handkerchief (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday at a Press conference Ms. Nancy Pelosi (D - CA) was asked about Chris Christie's latest trouble. Her response provides some fantastic body language tells.

At 0:14, Ms. Pelosi is seen displaying a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue"). This is a highly classic nonverbal signal indicating the emotional context accompanying the following thought-feelings: "I did/am about to do a foolish thing", I got away with something", "I've got (about to get) caught" or "I've been (I am) bad". When clustered with other nonverbals, it's a body language expression which can also indicate excitement or self-deprecating humor.

Ms. Pelosi's juts her tongue about 4 seconds after she hears Chris Christie's name. In this moment she is formulating her response - and this expression shows us that she's about to sling mud (as well a self-critique of what she's about to say).

Here is a statement analysis (language analysis) pearl: A second later at 0:15, as Ms. Pelosi begins her answer, the first word she uses is "actually". Although it's a very common word, whenever the answer to a question begins with the word "actually" (e.g. the very first word in the response), the answer which follows has an extremely high likelihood of being a lie. Ms. Pelosi goes on to example this principle as she speaks about her "concerned about transportation to the Super Bowl" of the San Francisco 49ers.

The California democrat then supplies Saturday Night Live with fodder as she shows off bling of her charm bracelet ("... You probably were noticing I'm have an extraordinary amount of bling ..."). This was not however what it may look like. Ms. Pelosi used the next 30 seconds to formulate her answer to the reporter's question regarding Governor Chris Christie and the Bridge lane closure scandal. She was stalling for time.

What other nonverbal stalling techniques do politicians (or witnesses, those being uncomfortably vetted, spouses, students, criminals, CEOs in the midst of crisis management, etc.) use to gain more time to think of the "right answer"?

During 0:43 to 0:46, the House Minority Leader exhibits a prolonged bilateral tight eyelid closure (along other nonverbals). In this context this expression indicates emotional processing associated with embarrassment. She just finished rambling (see below) about her bracelet and the San Francisco 49ers - and she is realizing how foolish this looked.

At 0:46 Ms. Pelosi continues,
"... I won't, I wouldn't think of getting involved in that discussion except to say [long nose wipe during 0:50 - 51] that the outrage that the governor demonstrated this morning I think was - or was it yesterday - whenever it was, we saw it this morning ah, was certainly justified um, I don't, I don't know that much about it you're right it's not, it's not part of my responsibility, ah, but I do know that ah, that if it were a democratic governor, I can just imagine, ah what,[stunted laughter] ah Chris Christie would be doing under the circumstances. Can you? Can you just see it? Can you just see what he'd be doing if ah? And little, a little ethnicity involved in some ah, some of the emails. Very interesting. That's all I know."

Here Ms. Pelosi's nose no doubt itches (via the release of natriuretic polypeptide b - also called Nppb) - and/or probably feels like it is running a bit. Such a nose rub in the context of answer a specific question or declarative statement is highly indicative of a lie. This certainly explains her anxiety and subsequent nose itch. She says, "... I won't, I wouldn't think of getting involved in that discussion ..." - yet she goes on to immediately get involved in the discussion.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2599: Spotting Subtle Signals of Arrogance - Tiger Woods and Rachel Nichols (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this short excerpt from a longer interview, Tiger Woods responds to Rachel Nichols' question, "As that stretch gets longer and longer without a major, what's that like when it builds? What's that pressure like as it builds and builds?"

Woods responds, "Well I [inaudible] for me, I look at it, the fact that it's, it takes a career. You know for, for Jack it took 'em 'til he was 46 [laugh]. Ummm, it takes a long time to win a lot a lot of Major Championships. And you're going to have your, your years where you play really well and may clip - you know two or three out of there. And then you're going to have your years where you just don't win anything, but you're there. Ah, you just don't happen to win. [Deep inhalation] And you know quite frankly over the last, well since oh-eight, um, I've been there with a chance to win in about half of them. Ummm, just haven't seem to have won one."

Between 0:37 - 0:38, Woods increases both his rate of blinking as well as some of his blinks' duration. This is known as an extended blink.

Just prior to this (0:36 - 0:37) Tiger also takes a deep inhalation.

At the 0:40 mark, Tiger displays a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue"). This nonverbal conveys, "I've been bad", "I got caught", "I did a foolish thing" or "I got away with something".

It can also be a sign of excitement (a' la Katie Holmes).










All of the above very short-lived noverbals occur within a few seconds of each other (four to five seconds). In addition, Woods' use of the phrase, "... you know quite frankly ..." during the precise time of the increased and extended blinks is particularly telling. When "quite frankly" or "frankly" is spoken - it signals that the person views himself as an alpha relative to whom they are speaking. It also signifies he has an agenda and is in a highly subjective mindset. He is not interested in listening or observing. It is a strong sign of ego-driven behavior and much of the time, although the word declares truth, there is very often an element of deception present (paralanguage). Tiger is rationalizing aloud - yet within the context of his own self-talk, he does not feel he is (or has been for the last 5 seasons) the "same old Tiger".

This cluster of increase rate and duration of blinking, deep inhalation, a tongue jut and use of the phrase, "... you know quite frankly ..." is significant for arrogant, egocentric and patronizing behavior. Any recipient know they are 'being played' and viewed as a beta.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2594: Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin Harassment, Part II - Miami Dolphins Coach Joe Philbin's Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Joe Philbin, the head coach of the Miami Dolphins speaks within this news video for about 13 seconds (0:31 - 0:44) regarding the harassment and threat allegations regarding Richie Incognito against his teammate Jonathan Marin; yet with this brief duration we can tell much about his temperament by examining his body language. 

At the video's 0:43 mark, Mr. Philbin displays a Tongue Jut (aka "Lizard Tongue"). This telling nonverbal conveys: "I got caught", "I've been bad", "I got away with something" or "I've been foolish".

Although not the case here, the tongue jut can also signify excitement or self-deprecating humor.

Just a second later at 0:44, the Miami Dolphin coach exhibits an evanescent "Inward Lip Roll". Abbreviated as an ILR, this nonverbal signifies the mind's attempt to suppress significant escalation of strong emotions - both inwardly and outwardly. These usually are negative emotions although on occasion joy-happiness can be suppressed in this manner and may overlap with or be a component of a display of duping delight body language.




During this 13 second segment Joe Philbin only blinks twice. Is this more or less than average? Are the coach's eyes open more than baseline or are they slightly closed? What is the significance here?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2576: Chris Brown's Body Language - a Signal of Psyche's Suppressing Emotions ... and Anger and .... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Brown is once again in very hot water. The singer and his bodyguard were arrested in Washington D.C. this morning and charged with felony assault. Among other things, this would constitute a parole violation for the entertainer and a high probability of prison time. He has a history of felony assault of his former girlfriend, Rihanna. The above video is from a court appearance earlier this year in July.

At the 0:06 mark, Chris Brown can be seen displaying a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue"). This classic body language signal is significant the emotional tone of: "I did a foolish thing", I got away with something", "I've been bad" or "I've got caught". It can also be a nonverbal sign of excitement (when clustered with other nonverbals it can indicate excitement or self-deprecating humor). 










Less than a second later, Brown displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) with a coexisting "Jaw Jut" (0:06.5 - 0:08.5). In this context a jaw jut is an extremely reliable body language indicator of anger.

The simultaneous inward lip roll is a signal of the psyche's attempt at suppressing an (outward) emotional display as well as preventing internal emotion escalation. It is much more commonly seen with negative emotions (here anger) however it can sometimes be seen in positive emotions such as joy-happiness.


When a man displays a jaw jut, there is a good chance that the anger will escalate to violence. This probability is very significantly increased if the hand(s) are forming fists. Red flag time.

Another inward lip roll with somewhat less jaw jutting is exhibited at 0:26 - 0:28.
