Body Language Analysis No. 4263: Kellyanne Conway regarding James Comey's Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to President Trump was interviewed by Chris Cuomo regarding James Comey's interview last night on 20/20. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of that interview.

KELLYANNE CONWAY (continuing at 2:58): ... Ah, No, the Democrats are mad at Comey for lots of reasons, I mean they, they blame him for her loss - I lo- I saw, I saw Comey last night, and I said, 'This guy swung an election? I [feigned stammering] don't think so!' I mean [slurred] definitely took away from that - he struggled to even answer basic questions. He also admitted Ω that he as FBI director - injected partisan politics and, and his belief that, that person who lost the [stutter] election who should have won Chris...

Just after she said, "... He also admitted ...", Ms. Conway displays a Loose Tongue Jut (during 3:14, and notated by the Ω symbol). A loose tongue jut (not to be confused with a tight tongue jut or a wide open tongue jut) is a classic nonverbal display indicating the thought-emotions of:

• I've been bad
• I got caught
• I've just done a stupid thing

Note that simultaneously Ms. Conway displays a prolonged blink - which, although not required in this context, when clustered with a Loose Tongue Jut, this blocking phenomenon serves as an amplifier for these same feelings.

Summary: Kellyanne Conway's nonverbal behavior displayed here (a Loose Tongue Jut), indicates she is being deceptive. She does not believe her own statement(s) - before or after/during her Loose Tongue Jut:

More specifically, Kellyanne Conway is lying when she said:

• "... He also admitted Ω that he as FBI director - injected partisan politics ..."
(e.g., She believes James Comey did not admit this, or she believes he did not inject partisan politics into the 2016 election)

and/or with her prior statement:

• " 'This guy swung an election? I [feigned stammering] don't think so!' "
(That is, she DOES, in fact, believe that James Comey affected the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election).

Body Language Analysis No. 4257: Mark Zuckerberg Testifies Before The Senate - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg testified before the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of but two key moments of his five-hour testimony. Included here is a nuancing of a nonverbal signal that most casual observers would conflate - however, their meanings are profoundly different.

SENATOR CRUZ (continuing at 1:18): Well Mr. Zuckerberg, I will say there are - a great many - Americans who I think are deeply concerned that, that Facebook and other tech companies are engaged in a pervasive pattern of bias and political censorship. Ah, There have been numerous instances with Facebook ...

During 1:36, as Senator Cruz says, "... Facebook ...", Mr. Zuckerberg displays a Tight Tongue Jut. A tight tongue signals the thought emotions of:

• Disdain
• Disgust
• Repulsion

With a Tight Tongue Jut, the mouth is barely opened - but the tongue is pushed out through closed lips. It's helpful to think of this as an adult analog to an infant rejecting creamed asparagus.

Notice also his nostril flaring and tension in the region above the upper lip/below the nose (the "mustache area").

In this specific example, it's not possible to differentiate if Mr. Zuckerberg's emotions are directed at the Senator from Texas - or toward the accusations/in defense of the company he co-founded (or both).

Now on a bit further ...

SENATOR CRUZ (continuing at 2:54, over-talking): So, let me, let me, let me ask this question: Are, are you aware of any ad or page that has been taken down from Planned Parenthood?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: Senator, I, I'm not. But let me just - can I [stutter] f- finish?

SENATOR CRUZ: (over-talking) How about moveon.org?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: Sorry?

SENATOR CRUZ: How about moveon.org?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: I'm not specifically aware of those cases.

SENATOR CRUZ: (over-talking) How about any Democratic candidate for office?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: I, I'm not specifically aware. I mean I, I'm, I'm not n-, I'm not sure Ω

During 3:18 - just after Mr. Zuckerberg said, "I, I'm not specifically aware. I mean I, I'm, I'm not n-, I'm not sure" - Mark then displays a Loose Tongue Jut (notated in the dialog by the Ω symbol). A Loose Tongue Jut transmits the thought emotions of:

• "I've been bad"
• "I've been caught"
• "I've done a stupid thing" (Navarro).

Contrast this with the Tight Tongue Jut shown earlier. Note that in the Loose Tongue Jut - as the tongue protrudes out - the mouth is partially opened.

A split second later - also during 3:18 - Mr. Zuckerberg displays an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). An Inward Lip Roll is a signal of the psyche suppressing strong emotions - both from being expressed on the face - but also inwardly from growing even stronger.

What emotion you ask?

Another split-second later (still during 3:18) - we see Mark Zuckerberg's jaw jutting forward (A Jaw Jut) This is secondary to an adrenaline surge accompanying anger. Note also the wrinkling/dimpling on the anterior (front) aspect of his chin.

Body Language Analysis No. 4122: Jeff Sessions Testimony, Russia, Ted Lieu, and Changing Stories - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified before the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. From a nonverbal perspective, the examples here are so numerous that an entire course could be taught from this single video.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a small portion of Jeff Sessions' testimony - in an exchange with Representative Ted Lieu.

TED LIEU: (Continuing at 5:19:01): You did have communications with the Russians last year, isn't that right?

JEFF SESSIONS: Repeat that.

TED LIEU: You did have communications with the Russians last year, isn't that right? --- Just yes or no.

JEFF SESSIONS: I had a - meeting with the Russian Ambassador, yes Ω

TED LIEU: That's exactly the - opposite answer you gave, under oath, to the US Senate. So, again, either you're lying to the US Senate, or you're lying to the US House of Representatives.

JEFF SESSIONS: Well [over-talking by Lieu, Sessions, and Goodlatte]

BOB GOODLATTE: The time of the gentleman has expired. The witness can answer any further if he chooses to.

JEFF SESSIONS: Um, I won't repeat it Mr. Chairmen. But, ah, I hope the congressman knows - and I hope all of you know - that my answer to that question, "I did not meet with the Russians", was explicitly responding, ah, to the shocking suggestion, that I as a surrogate, was meeting on a continuing basis with Russian officials - and the implication was to impact the campaign in some sort of nefarious way - and all I did was meet in my office with the Ambassador which we didn't discuss anything like that § So, I just, ah, ah, wanna say I appreciate, ah, the Congressman's right. I guess he can say - it's free speech - can't be sued - here - um - so, ah - I just ah - my response - um - I'm sorry that, um - Ah, that's my response.

Attorney General Sessions displays several nonverbal red flags in this portion of his testimony. During 5:19:14, just after he says, "I had a - meeting with the Russian Ambassador, yes", Sessions' displays a "Tongue Jut" - more specifically, a "Loose Tongue Jut" (notated by Ω in the dialogue above).

A "Loose Tongue Jut" is significant for the thought-emotions of "I've been caught", "I've been bad", "I've done a foolish thing" (Navarro). It's important to not confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning.

A few moments later, during 5:20:01, just after AG Sessions says, "... and all I did was meet in my office with the Ambassador which we didn't discuss anything like that...", he displays another Loose Tongue Jut (notated by § in the above dialog).

During 5:19:21, just after Rep. Lieu says, "... So, again, either you're lying to the US Senate ...", AG Sessions turns his head away and fumbles in his left inside jacket pocket - but not for long.

He then shuffles through two notepads and looks away again during 5:19:22 - 5:19:25.

Both of these MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) are high anxiety signals indicative of an adrenaline surge. The fact that he looks away - is a form of diminished eye contact and in this context is highly indicative of deception.

From a statement analysis perspective (a subset of paralanguage) Jeff Sessions use of "surrogate" in this setting is also particularly telling. In using the word in this context, he's attempting to distance himself from Donald Trump's campaign - in which he already held a key role.

The Attorney General's numerous stuttering displays at the end of his statement is also a red flag - indicative of low confidence and considerable emotional discomfort.

Moreover, an apology, such as "I'm sorry" wrapped in stuttering is NOT a statement associated with someone who just recounted the facts as he recalled them.

It's also profoundly important to note that The Attorney General of The United States just issued a form of thinly veiled threat to Ted Lieu when he said, "... I appreciate, ah, the Congressman's right. I guess he can say - it's free speech - can't be sued ...". In this moment Jeff Sessions felt cornered.


Summary: Jeff Sessions' nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior in the segment of his testimony before the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee outlined here, indicates that with very high probability he was being deceptive.

Body Language Analysis No. 4078: Toddler Steals Prince Harry's Popcorn - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During an event at the Invictus Games, a toddler repeatedly helped herself to Prince Harry's popcorn. When Harry finally "caught" her - he was playful (Of course, he probably knew all along she was pinching his popcorn [longer version here]).

Like most good-natured uncles - Prince Harry interacted well with the little girl. Upon teasing her, he instinctively realized he may have gone a bit too far. A beautiful manifestation of his psyche's awareness of this infraction is seen during 0:31 - in the form of a very specific microexpression.

Here Harry displays a classic example of a "Loose Tongue Jut" (be careful not to confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning). It's also sometimes referred to as a "Lizard Tongue".

A Loose Tongue Jut signals "I've been bad", "I've been caught" (Navarro) - and, as it's exampled here, it's very often a self-deprecating act. It's our psyche calling us out - e.g., "My bad!". It's important to note that Prince Harry wasn't deliberately sticking his tongue out at the child - rather the teasing action came earlier via the popcorn. The Loose Tongue Jut dynamic is subconsciously driven.

Watch this video at regular speed - without looking at the time marker - you may very well miss it. Then when you do see it (occurring during 0:31) - note how quickly it happens. Next, view it at 1/4 speed - it's still quite evanescent.

Body Language Analysis No. 4053: Donald Trump Regarding DACA - "I Have a Love for These People" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday US Attorney General Sessions announced what had been long anticipated - that The Trump Administration is rescinding DACA. Afterward, during Q & A on meeting regarding tax reform, President Trump was asked about that decision. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.


KRISTEN WELKER (beginning at 3:01): Mr. President, how is your DACA decision 'treating people with heart'?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Well I have a great heart for the - folks we're talking about - a great love - for them *§ - and people think in terms of children, but they're really young adults. Ah, π I have a love for these people and hopefully, now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly...

In the video above, during 3:11 (notated with *), just after he says, "... I have a great heart for the - folks we're talking about - a great love - for them...", Donald Trump shrugs - but only his left shoulder and at the same time he displays a long-duration blink while looking down to his right. This Unilateral Shoulder Shrug is one example of what is known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip".

It qualifies as an emblem because a shrug has a near universal meaning of - "I don't know", "I don't care", "What does it matter?" - the first two of which are particularly applicable here. It is partial in that it only occurs on one side (his left). And it's a slip because it "leaks" out - he doesn't intend to shrug here. It is subconsciously driven.

This Partial Emblematic Slip is amplified by his simultaneous extended blink while looking down to his right. 

About a second later, during 3:12 (notated by §) during the same extended blink-looking down to his right, President Trump displays a "Loose Tongue Jut" (not to be confused with a "Tight Tongue Jut").

President Trump exhibits a second Loose Tongue Jut during 3:16 (notated by π), just before he says, "... I have a love for these people and hopefully, now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly...". This also occurs at the same time he is looking down to his right in an extended blink.

A "Loose Tongue Jut" indicates the thought-emotions of "I've been bad" or "I've been caught" (Navarro).

Summary: President Trump's nonverbal behavior indicates that he does not care about the children and adults affected by DACA. These same signals also correlate strongly with deception when he says, "... I have a great heart for the - folks we're talking about - a great love - for them..." and "I have a love for these people and hopefully, now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly". Moreover, there is a complete absence of any nonverbal empathy displays.

At the very beginning of this video, before Donald Trump says, "Let Obamacare fail" - the President prefaces by saying, "We've had a lot of victories - but we haven't had a victory on healthcare - ahhh, we're disappointed. I am very disappointed ..."

Just after he says, "but we haven't had a victory on healthcare", President Trump displays a Loose Tongue Jut (during 0:03). A loose tongue jut is a nonverbal signal of the thought-emotions of: "I've been bad" or "I've been caught" (Navarro). Take care to not confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut".

Another useful way to think of a Loose Tongue Jut - is that it's a nonverbal manifestation of the emotional dissonance being felt between the tensions of what a person wanted to happen vs. what actually did happen.

Summary: President Trump's Loose Tongue Jut in this context tells us that he believes the failure of the US Senate to pass their version of the "Repeal and Replace Obamacare" (Healthcare Bill) is a quite significant. In particular, Trump feels that he shares some fault for this political failure.

Body Language Analysis No. 3994: Vladimir Putin at G20 - Donald Trump agreed with me - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Russian President, Vladimir Putin and his Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov held a press conference in Hamburg on Saturday at the completion of the G20 Summit. The video above contains a short clip of the Russian leader's Q & A. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

JOURNALIST (beginning at 0:00): Did Trump agree with your position that Russian had not intervened in the US elections?

VLADIMIR  PUTIN: ahhh, Well, ahum, he, ahhh, let me repeat, he, ah, answered all, ah, the questions. And ah, I think that he noted it, and, ah, he agreed with it. Ahhh, but I, I think it's better to ask him exactly what you have asked, rather than me.

For those of us who do not speak Russian, we must rely on the translation. Yet because it's being performed by a high-level professional - all the "ahs", stutters, etc., are included.


Primary tells - These nonverbal indicators are highly suggestive of deception:

1. Duping Delight: Between 0:21 and 0:26, President Putin displays multiple examples of partially suppressed smiles. His displays are secondary to his true (sincere) joy-happiness in perpetrating a deception. This is a very common phenomenon known as "Duping Delight" (Ekman) - colloquially learned by many in our youth as a "Smirk" associated with the act of telling a lie.

It's best to view these tells in the dynamic context of the video (several times) to evaluate this behavior, rather than with still images, as this behavior is somewhat subtle.

2. Tongue Jut (Loose Tongue Jut): During 0:26, just as the translator says, "me", Vladimir Putin displays a "Tongue Jut" - more specifically a Loose Tongue Jut" (not to be confused with a "Tight Tongue Jut"). A loose tongue jut is a nonverbal indicator of "I've been bad" or "I got caught". It's helpful to think of this nonverbal leakage as one's psyche behaving in a self-admonishingly or self-deprecatingly manner.

Secondary Tells - These nonverbal/paralanguage tells, while when viewed in isolation don't indicate lying - they do all signal anxiety/low confidence/misdirection. Yet, collectively, in the greater context of the other signs mentioned here, their clustering is strongly suggestive of deception:

3. Shuffling back and forth on his feet: Note that early on in this answer, Vladimir Putin is shuffling back and forth on his feet several times. This is a nonspecific anxiety signal. Putin is a very experienced in front of the camera - yet he displays anxiety while answering this question. Why?

4. Shoulder Shrugs: Putin displayed multiple "Shoulder Shrugs". Caution must be used in the interpretation of shoulder shrugs as often (especially when viewed in isolation) they can lead to nonverbal misdiagnoses. Yet, in general, shoulder shrugs are indicators of the thought-emotions of, "I don't know", "I don't care", "What choice did I have?" and/or "What does it matter?"

When shrugs are seen with high frequency, it's often useful to recall this quote from Hamlet (Apologies to William Shakespeare), "The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks." 

5. Central Forehead Contraction: Putin's prolonged elevated central forehead contraction during his answer is highly suspect. The over-use of the forehead muscles, particularly the central forehead is a common and profound insincerity tell.

6. "... he, ah, answered all, ah, the questions...": President Putin referring to Trump answering "the questions" - suggests, at least from Putin's point of view - it was Vladimir Putin asking questions with Donald Trump answering them during their meeting at the G20. Who is the tail and who is the dog?

7. Stuttering: As mentioned above, although this was translated by a professional, Putin was stuttering frequently - a speech pattern which, standing alone, is a strongly indicative of anxiety.


Summary: Vladimir Putin is concealing truths - and yet, while he appears to be in the proverbial driver's seat - he still displays significant anxiety amidst his deception.

Body Language Analysis No. 3983: Female Kurdish sniper fighting IS narrowly cheats death - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This sniper, fighting in Raqqa, is a member of a Kurdish YPJ (Women's Protection Unit). Incredibly, less than a second after she pulls her trigger - another bullet (fired by her enemy, the Islamic State, aka IS) narrowly misses her head.

For a split second afterwards, the female sniper's eyes open very widely. This action is secondary to the adrenaline surge of her near death experience.

Notice also how her tongue rapidly sticks outward. This is known as a "Tongue Jut" - and more specifically, this variation is a "Loose Tongue Jut". A loose tongue jut is an example of nonverbal self-deprecating behavior. It's a way of calling one's self out after a mistake - as if to say, "I've done a foolish thing" or "I've (almost) been caught".

Why did the sniper laugh - and so quickly - after almost being killed?

Body Language Analysis No. 3959: Vladimir Putin - Megyn Kelly Interview, Part II - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

You say you don't speak Russian? That's okay, Vladimir Putin speaks English (although he pretends he doesn't). His translation earpiece is a ruse, for his near instantaneous nonverbal responses to questions, betray his multilingual skills (and much more).

What follows is a transcript of a portion of the video above, followed by a partial nonverbal analysis.

MEGYN KELLY: There have been questions in America, about Donald Trump's finances. He hasn't released his tax returns. There have been questions about this secret Russian dossier, which he says is fake - but which purports to have blackmail information in it generated by the Russians. There have been questions about communications between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign. All of which has American's asking, 'Do you have something damaging on our president?' "

VLADIMIR PUTIN: Well this is just not a lot of nonsense. Where would we get this information from? Why? Did we have some special relationship with him? We didn't have any relationship at all. There was a time when he used to come to Moscow, but you know I never met with him. We have a lot of Americans who visit us. Right now I think we have representatives from a hundred American companies that have come to Russia. Do you think we're gathering compromising information on all of them right now or something? Are you all - have you all lost your senses over there?

During 9:03, as Megyn Kelly says, "There have been questions in America ...", Putin displays an excellent example of a microexpression of contempt. Did you see it? Watch this several times. We can't say whether his contempt was directed at Megyn Kelly, Donald Trump, or America - but he was absolutely feeling contempt for some or all of these people.

The Tongue Jut, specifically the "Loose Tongue Jut" was a nonverbal signal displayed multiple times by President Putin during this interview. The one shown above was displayed during 9:09 when Megyn Kelly said, "... secret Russian dossier ...".

The Loose Tongue Jut (not to be confused with a tight tongue jut) is a nonverbal signal for the thought-emotions of "I've been bad" or "I've been caught". 

This was accompanied by both an increased frequency and duration of blinking. This dynamic is a highly reliable indicator of anxiety.

The above expression is a cartoonish one of Feigned Incredulity. He makes it as Kelly says, "... says is fake ..." (9:12).  Note that this expression arrives before Megyn Kelly says the word "fake". This is one of many times when Putin's timing was off. And while the expression, in an absolute sense, indicates a pretend act of disbelief, its early-arrival timing does as well.

Another Loose Tongue Jut (9:13) indicating "I've been bad" / "I've been caught" as Megyn Kelly says, "... but which ..."

Despite being a high-level KGB officer - and the fact he's been coached by world class nonverbal experts, Vladimir Putin still commits a grave body language sin of facial touching (as Kelly says, "... purports to have blackmail information in it ..." (9:14 - 9:16). Here manifested as a lip rub/mouth touch - this MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicates a high level of anxiety. In this cluster context, this gesture points strongly to deception.

During 9:20, as Ms. Kelly says, "... Trump campaign ...", Putin displays an excellent example of a "Tongue in Cheek" MAP signal. This is a sign of the thought-emotion of "I Just Won" - and conveys a component of suppressed smugness.

From a paralanguage perspective, it's of profound importance to note that Putin never answered Kelly's question of, "Do you have something damaging on our president?". He never said, "No." He danced around the issue. This screams of deception.

Another paralanguage is displayed with Putin saying, "Well this is just not a lot of nonsense" - rather than, "Well this is just a lot of nonsense". Of course could have been a simple mistake on the part of the interpreter (who most probably also has a lot of knowledge of President Putin activities).

Summary: Based on his nonverbal and paralanguage signals during this interview, there is an extremely high probability that Vladimir Putin has a dossier of damaging information regarding Donald Trump.
