Body Language Analysis No. 4180: White House Press Briefing Re: President Trump's Physical - Dr. Ronny Jackson - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday 16 January, Dr. Ronnie Jackson gave a briefing at the White House regarding President Donald Trump's Health. A full body language analysis of Dr. Jackson would be extremely voluminous. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of that press conference emphasizing one particular nonverbal signal.

During 9:37 just after he says, "In summary, the President's overall health is excellent. His cardiac performance during his physical exam was very good Ω " - Dr. Jackson displays one of many Forward Lip Purses.

He displays another Forward Lip Purse during13:59 as Hallie Jackson is asking, "... The President's personal doctor, memorably said, during the campaign that he would be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency, do you agree with that assessment?"

Another example is seen at 15:02, as Dr. Jackson is speaking (and stuttering) about how Sudafed was the etiology for the President's slurring of his words during a speech on 6 December 2017.

A Forward Lip Purse is a profoundly valuable nonverbal tell (not to confused with a lateral lip purse). It's an indication that those who display it are feeling an undisclosed disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. Moreover, forward lip pursing is only displayed by those who feel - at least in that specific context - they have a significant alpha status relative to others with whom they're currently interacting. Additionally, this signal is also an indication that they believe they have a high probability of success in implementing their plan.

Summary: At multiple times during his press conference on Tuesday, Dr. Ronny Jackson's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior indicated deception. One prime example was his multiple displays of forward lip pursing - indicating an undisclosed disagreement and/or a clandestine plan.

Body Language Analysis No. 4131: Michael Flynn's Clandestine Plans - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Happy Thanksgiving.

Lawyers for Michael Flynn recently notified President Trump's legal team that they will no longer discuss the special counsel's investigation. This is seen by most as an indication that Mr. Flynn is cooperating with Robert Mueller's team or he's in the process of negotiating with them.

The photo above (and close-up below) of Michael Flynn was taken at the White House on Monday, 13 February 2017 - moments prior to President Donald Trump's and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's joint press conference.

These were also the last hours of Flynn's historically short (24 days) tenure as National Security Advisor. Later that day, Flynn was forced to resign after information became public that he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Sergey Kislyak - who was at the time, Russian ambassador to the U.S. On 26 and 27 January, Sally Yates had informed White House counsel Don McGahn, that Flynn had misled Pence regarding his communications with Kislyak and was susceptible to blackmail by Russian operatives.

From a nonverbal perspective, the particular expression on Micheal Flynn's face is worth a trillion dollars.

Flynn's mouth and lips are configured in what is known as a "Lip Purse" - and more specifically, a "Forward Lip Purse" (not to be confused with a Lateral Lip Purse - which has a completely different meaning).

A forward lip purse is a signal of Clandestine Plans and/or Clandestine Disagreement. Crucially, it is only displayed by individuals who perceive themselves to be significantly alpha relative to another's beta status.

Those who make this expression may, in fact, voice some disagreement, at least a portion of it - however if they do so, you can be absolutely sure they are withholding a large portion of their dissidence.

Moreover, a person using the forward lip purse believes they have a relatively good chance of implementing their plan. With this in mind, it's noteworthy that Michael Flynn was looking at Jared Kushner when he made this face (that's the President's son-in-law and senior advisor in the left foreground of the photo).

Body Language Analysis No. 4124: Jeff Sessions and Russia - Part II - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is the second article on this site regarding Jeff Sessions' recent testimony before the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of the US Attorney General's exchange with Representative Shirley Jackson Lee.

REP. BOB GOODLATTE: (Continuing at 2:39:34): ... The Witness will answer the question.

REP. JACKSON LEE: Yes or no? Does he want to change his testimony in the intelligence committee?

AG SESSIONS: I would just say this - I stand by this testimony at the intelligence committee: "I have never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with the campaign or election in the United States. Further, I have no knowledge of any such conversations - by anyone connected with the Trump campaign.

REP. JACKSON LEE: I thank you very much for that. Ahum, I would move to-

AG SESSIONS [over-talking]: What I did say in my opening statement - I explained that when I was asked, ah, in October - just a few weeks ago, when I was asked, ah, about the matter, ah, "Did I have - a- any knowledge of anyone who had, a- talked r-, to the Russians?". I indicated, ahum, m, m -, ah, that I had not recalled, that meeting, when that occurred - but I would have been pleased to have, ah, responded, ah, and explained it if I'd recalled it Ω [2:40:36]. I've tried to be honest about that and give you my best response, ah, and did throughout all the testimony I've given - Miss Lee.

During 2:40:30 - 2:40:31, as Jeff Sessions says, "... but I would have been pleased ...", the Attorney General shakes his head quickly side-to-side, in a clear "No" signal. This is a classic and strong verbal-nonverbal contradictory phenomenon. Whenever the words and the body language contradict each other - it's the body language which reveals the true emotions. Indeed, AG Jeff Sessions would NOT have been pleased to have responded.

Watch this portion of the video several times, as the still image does not capture the dynamic nature of this nonverbal display.

Just a few seconds later (during 2:40:36), after the Attorney General finishes that same sentence, "... but I would have been pleased to have, ah, responded, ah, and explained it if I'd recalled it Ω ...", Jeff Sessions displays a Forward Lip Purse.

A forward lip Purse is a priceless nonverbal tell - for it indicates a clandestine disagreement or a clandestine plan. Amazingly, a forward lip purse is also only made by individuals who feel they are an alpha relative to whom they are dealing. Moreover, it also indicates they believe they have a high probability of success in implementing their plan. It's vital to never confuse the forward lip purse with a lateral lip purse.

Summary: Attorney General Sessions' nonverbal behavior indicates with extremely high probability that he was being deceptive during this portion of his testimony. Furthermore, he has plans which he kept covert during this exchange with the US House Judiciary Committee.

Body Language Analysis No. 4088: Kit Harington's April Fools' Prank on Rose Leslie - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During Kit Harington's recent guest appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Jon Snow's alter ego recounted an April Fools' Day prank he played on his fiancée, Rose Leslie. It's quite the spoof.

Mr. Harington displayed a particular and highly characteristic nonverbal tell during his interaction with Mr. Ross. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this moment.

JONATHAN ROSS (beginning during 0:00 in the above video): We have ah, a video prank -

KIT HARINGTON: Yeah ∑

ROSS: - that you played on your on, ah, your intended - on Rose. Ah, and, um, we're going to show this and then perhaps you can talk us through ...

Very early in the video, during 0:02, just after Kit Harington says, "Yeah" (notated by ∑), the actor displays a "Forward Lip Purse". This is brief, lasting less than a second (technically classified as a "near-microexpression).

Only three seconds later during 0:04 - 0:06, as Mr. Ross is saying, "... your intended - on Rose. Ah, and, um, we're going to show ...", Mr. Harington once again made this same Forward Lip Pursing (It probably lasted a bit longer, however, the camera switched to back to Ross).

A Forward Lip Purse indicates either the presence of secret - and/or a withheld disagreement (partially or fully withheld). Both of these situations encapsulate the nonverbal manifestation of an emotion which is clandestine in nature.

[Be careful not to confuse a forward lip purse with a lateral lip purse - which has a completely different meaning]

In this scenario, although the audience does know an April Fool's joke was pulled - we are not yet privy to what, specifically, is about to happen. Thus, from Kit Harington's point-of-view, he's very much pulling the same prank on us. He's keeping a secret. And the presence of this secret is manifested via his forward lip purse.

Keep in mind, that although Mr. Harington is a skilled and accomplished actor - when he's "just being Kit" - he's not any better at suppressing his nonverbal signals than the rest of us.

Summary: In this setting, we're let in on the complete secret in short order. However, in the everyday real world, forward lip pursing tells us that a person is keeping their full opinion to themselves - and very possibly a plan of action from our knowledge. Forward Pip Pursing a profound red flag and should never be ignored.

Body Language Analysis No. 4020: Bruce Willis and the "Death Wish" Remake - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Bruce Willis stars as Dr. Paul Kersey in a remake of the 1974 film, Death Wish. There are many people who consider Willis as a skilled actor - while others would say he routinely has relatively little variation of his facial expressions.

Regardless of how you may feel about Mr. Willis, this film, or his typical genre, you probably are aware that many actors have a few "go to expressions" for which they are known. One of Willis' default faces can be seen during 0:21 - 0:23 in the film trailer shown above. A cropped close-up of his expression is included below.

When looking at Bruce Willis' upper face, we see that eyebrows are drawn together and the inner (medial) portions are also vectored downward. His eyelids are also partially closed. There are no dynamic furrows in either lower eyelid. Rather, his lower lids are significantly tense. This eye-region cluster is indicative of critical evaluation mixed with lower level anger.

Now looking at his mouth - it's configured in what is known as a "Forward Lip Purse" (not to be confused with a "Lateral Lip Purse", which has a completely different meaning).

Forward Lip Pursing is an indication of clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. A forward lip purse is only made by individuals who feel that they are a relative alpha to those beta personalities with whom they're thinking about, conversing with, interacting, etc. Moreover, they also believe that their plan has a significant likelihood of success.

Next, make this exact expression yourself. Do so in front of a mirror until you get it just right. How does it make you feel? As part of this exercise, turn off any lights, so that you (presumably) have the same expression in the dark. This temporary sensory deprivation will allow you to focus on any emotions more easily. Making this expression should, very readily, elicit the same emotions described above.

Body Language Analysis No. 4009: Donald Trump regarding Jeff Sessions - "Time Will Tell" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, during a press conference at the White House with Lebanese Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, Donald Trump was asked several questions regarding Attorney General Jeff Sessions. One of these exchanges is included below, followed by an analysis of a particular nonverbal tell.

JOURNALIST (beginning at 0:00): "You spoke earlier today to the Wall Street Journal, we've all seen those comments, but I think everybody here probably is hoping, ah, that you could talk a little more about this. Ah, you have called your Attorney General, 'Beleaguered', you've criticized his decision to recuse himself on the Russia matters, ah - and, you're kind of catch phrase or motto before the White House was, 'You're fired', so, I'm wondering if you would talk to us a little bit about whether you've lost confidence in Jeff Sessions, w-whether you want him to resign on his own, ahum, whether you're prepared to fire him if he doesn't - and, and, why you're sorta letting him twist in the wind, rather than just making the call for him?"

DONALD TRUMP: "Well, I don't think I am doing that. But I am disappointed - in the Attorney General. Ah, he should not have recused himself, almost immediately after he took office, and if was going to recuse himself, he should have told me prior to taking office, and I would have quite simply picked somebody else. Ah, so I think that's a bad thing, not for the President, but for the Presidency. I think it's unfair to the Presidency. And, ah, that's the way I feel. Thank you."

Note that as the journalist says, "... you want him to resign on his own, ahum ..." (during 0:28 - 0:31), Donald Trump configures his lips in what is known as a "Forward Lip Purse" (be careful to not confuse this with a "Lateral Lip Purse").

A Forward Lip Purse is an extremely valuable nonverbal signal indicating a Clandestine Plan and/or a Clandestine Disagreement. This is a particularly fantastic example of this facial expression, for President Trump is very much not telling the public (and very probably his staff) whether he plans to fire Attorney General Sessions or is trying to force him to resign (or maybe another alternative).

Fascinatingly, the forward lip purse is only made by a person who perceives himself to be a relative alpha within the context of the interaction (e.g., in this example, Donald Trump is the alpha to relative Sessions', the journalist's - and the American public's relative beta status).

Moreover, when the forward lip purse is made, those who display it believe their plan of action has a high probability of success.

Body Language Analysis No. 3958: Vladimir Putin interview with Megyn Kelly - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Megyn Kelly recently interviewed Russian President, Vladimir Putin. The video above is but a portion - and it's crammed full of nonverbal tells. Some particularly interesting ones are discussed below.

Beginning at 2:51, Megyn Kelly asks, "President Putin, there, there are reports today, in the American press that, that the Trump Administration took active steps to ease sanctions on, on Russia, almost immediately after Trump took office. Ah, was this possibility ever discussed between the Trump team and your representatives prior to President Trump being inaugurated?"

President Putin displayed multiple hard swallows and other similar signals of a dry mouth/dry throat during this interview. A particularly notable hard swallow occurred during 3:11 - 3:13, as Megyn Kelly finishes her question.

It's extremely common for the throat to become suddenly dry during high anxiety. We subconsciously swallow to stimulate the production and distribution of needed saliva.

During 3:16, just as he speaks the first words of his answer, Vladimir Putin performs a "Butt Adjustment" - wherein he lifts his posterior off of his chair 4-5 centimeters. This dynamic is very strongly indicative of high anxiety.

The Russian President also momentarily closes his eyes and displays an elevated central forehead contraction (CFC). Given the context of his simultaneous neutral mouth display, this cluster is highly correlative with insincerity.

Then Putin displays what is known as an "Ear Screw" (3:17 - 3:18) as he inserts his index finger into his ear canal (external auditory meatus). This nonverbal signal, in the context of his declarative "No" answer, has a very high correlation with deception.

Note, again, another eyelid closure at the same time as an elevated central forehead contraction (insincerity).

A few moments later the camera pans out into the audience. Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, can be seen sitting in the distance in the front row. The above image is included as a reference photo - it was taken at a different time in the interview. Minister Lavrov is third from the left (with glasses).

Beginning at 3:38 Putin is continuing his answer, "... Our ambassador has met someone, and what is an ambassador supposed to do? That's what he gets money for ...".

At 3:45, just as the Putin's interpreter says, "... That's what ...", you will see Sergey Lavrov, also sit up and forward in a Butt Adjustment (High Anxiety Tell) - as well as display a Forward Lip Purse. A forward Lip Purse is a signal of clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. Minister Lavrov's body language is very bluntly calling out own his leader - Vladimir Putin - in a deception.

What significant paralanguage red flags did President Putin also use?


Summary: Based on the nonverbal and paralanguage tells displayed during this interview, there is a high probability President Putin is being deceptive and that the easing of US Sanctions on Russia were indeed discussed between Donald Trump and/or his surrogates and Vladimir Putin and/or other Russian government officials prior to President Trump's inauguration.

Note the configuration of Donald Trump's mouth and lips. This is a variation of a "Lip Purse", and more specifically, a "Forward Lip Purse".

A forward lip purse is a very common (and rarely understood) nonverbal display. It signals disagreement. To nuance this further - this particular flavor of disagreement is not always fully verbalized, in fact, a portion or even all of it is frequently kept secret. Thus when you see a forward lip purse, the accompanying spoken words are often misleading or deliberately deceptive. Therefore this particular nonverbal sign is also indicative of a clandestine plan.

Summary: When you see a forward lip purse, you should have a strong suspicion of deception. Do not trust the person's words - for they are planning, but not sharing. Protect your flank.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3886: Donald Trump, Russia, Healthcare, and "Huge" Negotiation Faux Pas - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

If you're ever sitting across from a person in any kind of a negotiation, sales, interrogation, cross-examination setting, etc., and he displays this same body language as Donald Trump is in this image - then he's showing you see his cards.

The specific position of the President's hand is indicative of critical evaluation. Mr. Trump does not like what he is seeing and/or hearing.

Additionally, Trump's torso, head and eyes are not facing directly at the person to whom he's looking/listening/speaking - rather these are all oriented obliquely. We don't look directly at those whom we don't respect, don't trust or don't like.

Yet the most crucial nonverbal tell in this image is revealed by the President's lips. In this moment, Donald Trump's expression displays an excellent example of what is known as a "Forward Lip Purse" - and it's also one of the most information-dense nonverbal signals.

Anytime a forward lip purse is made, the person displaying it believes that they are the alpha relative to those with whom they're interacting. Said another way, they perceive everyone else as a relative beta.

The forward lip purse is also a signal that they either have a clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. Those who make the forward lip purse are usually voicing no disagreement or a very minimal one - yet they are thinking in terms of tremendous disagreements. Thus this is a profoundly valuable signal of a large disparity between what is thought and what is spoken.

Moreover, because they are in an alpha mental-emotional alpha, those displaying a forward lip purse also believe that they have a high chance of success, once their plan in implemented.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3856: "Belle" Clip - Beauty and the Beast - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this latest trailer of Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson who stars as the lead protagonist "Belle" - sings a song by the same name.

There goes the baker with his tray, like always,
The same old bread and rolls to sell,
Ev'ry morning just the same,
Since the morning that we came,
To this poor provincial town.

From the perspective of body language, in this moment (captured in the image above during the 0:10 as she sings "... always ..."), Watson's character Belle is projecting a particular impishly playful expression. When a suppressed mouth smile accompanies a unilateral, elevated eyebrow - it indicates and projects mischievousness and often flirtation.

A head tilt - elevated on the same side as the elevated eyebrow - acts to amplify this emotion message.

Whenever you see such a face, take heed - for your Emotional Intelligence should immediately tell you that this person is thinking-feeling in a "deliberately naughty" manner - and you can bet there's a clandestine plan in the works (although it's not always "Rated G").

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3799: Carrie Fisher and Princess Leia - Full Lips and Lip Pursing - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

My condolences to Carrie Fisher's family and her loved-ones.

In the image above from the first Star Wars film (Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope), Carrie Fisher's character, Princess Leia is pictured. Of course, she is acting - and yet there is an excellent nonverbal subtlety to be noted here - particularly Leia's mouth.

Carrie Fisher's lips are full. She was 19 years old at the time - and while there is of course a variation of 'Lip Fullness' from person to person - it is greater with relative youth. In fact, even in the absence of prior pics or memories to act as a baseline - with a little practice, evaluating lip fullness can be a fairly accurate way to assist in estimating the age of others (Lip fullness also tends to be greater in females).

Most people confuse 'Lip Fullness' with that of 'Pouty Lips' (of which there are several varieties, and which Carrie Fisher no doubt did display - just not in this moment) - yet these are not synonymous (and their differences will addressed in an upcoming post).

In addition to her lip fullness, Carrie Fisher is here exhibiting 'Lip Pursing' - and more specifically 'Loose Forward Lip Pursing'. A loose forward lip purse is indicative of a clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. Therefore when it is seen, take heed - for what is being said aloud vs. what is being thought and felt - are dramatically different. This is not an expression one makes when there is 'full and honest disclosure'.

In this example, the loose forward lip pursing is subtle to mild in degree, and thus when it's superimposed onto what are already full lips, it is somewhat difficult to discern. Yet it IS present - and even though this is seen within the context of acting, this very much mimics real-world nonverbal scenarios: anatomical variation overlapping with an emotional display.

Try making a mild lip purse right now. The mere act of forming this facial expression will make you truly 'feel in disagreement' and/or 'contemplative/planning'. Thus a lip purse is very much a nonverbal signal we would expect to see on Princes Leia's face had she been fighting against and/or escaping from The Empire.
