Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3172: Jameis Winston, the NFL Draft, Body Language and Predicting Violent Behavior (PHOTO)

The 2015 NFL Draft begins today. Due to sexual allegations raised against Jameis Winston (which after an investigation, were later dropped) he may not be chosen first by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - as, in an alternate Universe, he otherwise would.

As healthy human beings, we all occasionally feel the emotions and thus display expressions of both contempt and - as Jameis Winston is here - disgust (Because we can't visualize the full right side of his face - we also can't say for sure if Winston also has some concomitant components of contempt). Yet those who display either of these facial configurations chronically - have significantly higher tendencies toward narcissistic personality disorder. In addition, those who express chronic disgust and/or contempt have a greater likelihood of problems with impulse control (losing their temper) as well as violent acts.

In the image above, Jameis Winston, the recent Florida State Seminoles quarterback and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, has significant facial features of disgust (perhaps a 3 on a 1-10 scale). His mild nostril flaring and the tightening of other mid-facial musculature (particularly of his "mustache area") are significant for disgust. Further "disgust amplifiers" include the backwards tilting (extension) of his neck & head - as well as the partial closure of Winston's eyelids.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2958: Jameis Winston's Suspension - Press Conference - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jameis Winston, Florida State University quarterback and the 2013 Heisman Trophy Winner is shown in this video during a press conference earlier this week. Winston spoke here when he (and everyone else) thought he was going to be suspended for the first half of the Clemson game. Last night FSU's interim President Garnett Stokes and athletics director Stan Wilcox signed an email indicating their new decision that Winston was going to be suspended for the full game citing the results of a "continuing investigation" for Winston's behavior this past Tuesday of standing on a table and yelling obscenities. Jimbo Fisher, FSU's head coach signature was not included in this email.

What follows is a partial analysis of Winston's Body Language:

0:11 seconds

Tongue Jut signaling, "I've been bad", "I got caught" or "I've got away with something".

In other nonverbal contexts it can be part of excitement or a self-deprecating cluster (not applicable in this cluster-context).

0:23 seconds

After saying "...I'm not a 'me person' ...", Jameis Winston tilts his head back with his chin forward in a clear nonverbal display of arrogance and defiance. In this moment, Winston's verbal message is highly contradictory to his nonverbal behavior. Whenever these two are in disparity, the nonverbal is always indicative of the true thoughts-emotions.

A display of "I regret it, but I disagree".

Another clear signal of insincerity.

A shrug indicates, "I don't know", "I don't care" or "What does it matter".

An "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) tells us that Winston is trying to suppress an emotional crescendo as well as a more overt nonverbal display.

Inward lip rolls may suppress any emotion but they are most often seen with negative ones (e.g. anger, sadness, frustration, etc.)

This is indicates relief after a stressful event and is similar to the "Puffer Fish" nonverbal - yet his cheeks never bulge very much because of his jaw simultaneously jutting forward (signifying a persistent anger component now waning) preventing any significant cheek puffing. 


Taken in toto, Jameis Winston does not believe his recent action of standing on a table and shouting obscenities are proportionate to being suspended from playing football. His apology is insincere.

Winston has been accused of several crimes including rape but he was never charged.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2667: Jimbo Fisher and Son Ethan - A Body Language Barometer of Affection (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Jimbo Fisher, head football coach of the No. 1 ranked Florida State University, is pictured here hugging his son, Ethan. Ethan Fisher has a rare blood disorder - Fanconi Anemia. It is transmitted autosomal recessively (thus requiring a single gene from each parent) and occurs in one of every 350,000 births (although higher in some demographics). These unfortunate people lack the ability for some DNA repair and as a result most develop cancer and bone marrow failure.

From a body language point of view, this image is a great illustrator of affection display during a hug. Hugs are sadly all too rare - the average one lasting only about three seconds with sincere hugs lasting longer.

One of several indicators of both affection and sincerity is eye closure during a hug. Ninety percent of a human being's sensory input is visual - and forty percent of the mass of the brain is dedicated to the visual system. Thus when the eyes are closed during a hug, there is a momentary small yet significant shunting of a portion of blood flow away from the visual centers and a down-regulation of electrical-chemical activity there. This allows the other four senses as well as the cognitive and emotional centers of the brain to up-regulate and become more sensitive. When we automatically close our eyes during a hug, it is because of our subconscious desire to experience every last drop of emotion. Our emotional brain wants to maximize the experience.
