Body Language Analysis No. 4328: Mike Pompeo Testifies to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 25 July 2018, , US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee regarding President Trump's Summit with Vladimir Putin last week in Helsinki. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis highlighting a few key moments while undergoing questioning by Committee Chairman, Senator Bob Corker.

SENATOR BOB CORKER (continuing at 23:10): "So, why does he do those things? I mean, is there some strategy behind creating doubt in US senators' minds on both sides of the aisle? Doubt in the American people - as to what his motivations are - when in fact we have tremendous faith in you? I think you're a patriot. Tremendous faith in Mattis. But it's the President's actions that create tremendous distrust in our nation. Among our allies, it's palpable. We meet and talk with them. Is there a strategy to this - or is it - what, what is it that causes the President to purposely - purposely create distrust in these institutions and what we're doing?"

SECRETARY POMPEO: "Senator I just, I disagree with most of what you just said there. Ahum, you somehow disconnect the administration's activities from the president's actions. They're, they're, they're one in the same. Thee - every sanction that was put in place was signed off by the President of the United States, every spy that was removed was directed by the president."

As Senator Corker finishes his question, and as he begins his answer (during 23:51 - 23:54), Secretary Pompeo scratches the posterior aspect of his right ear.

This ear scratching nonverbal dynamic, in the context of a simultaneous verbal denial - particularly during an exchange when the ramifications are so very significant - is highly indicative of deception.

A bit further on, Corker continues...

BOB CORKER (at 25:09): I, I noticed that you - are not responding to what I'm saying

MIKE POMPEO: I think, I think I responded to everything that you had said Senator

BOB CORKER [overtalking]: Yeah .... Why I ...... Nah, no you didn't. And the fact is - that you, you just didn't okay.

MIKE POMPEO [overtalking]: [inaudible] .... We simply disagree Senator

BOB CORKER [overtalking]: No, we don't disagree that - Hell, let's run the transcript again if ya wanna talk about it

MIKE POMPEO: [overtalking] Alright .... We'll - we'll let the world decide Ω

During 28:27, just after Secretary Pompeo says, "We'll - we'll let the world decide", he displays a classic contempt expression (notated above by the Ω symbol). More specifically, this emotion leakage is in the form of a Microexpression - and therefore is very short-lived. In colloquial terms, it resembles a split-second snarl on Pompeo's left mid-face.

When a person feels contempt - they believe the other person (or group) is below them - fundamentally inferior. This is their belief. This is contempt. Pompeo believes Corker is beneath him.

The image above shows his expression in this moment - although it's impossible to fully capture the dynamic nature of a microexpression in a photograph. Please watch the video at regular speed, at 1/2 and 1/4 speeds - and again at regular speed.

SUMMARY: Secretary Pompeo's nonverbal behavior displayed in this video, indicates that, with very high probability, he was lying - and that he does indeed think that President Trump creates "doubt in US senators' minds on both sides of the aisle" and that "the President's actions ... create tremendous distrust in our nation" and "Among our allies" - and that Pompeo believes, the President "purposely create(s) distrust". 

Moreover, Mike Pompeo's nonverbal behavior also shows he feels contempt for Bob Corker.

Body Language Analysis No. 4102: Senator Bob Corker - Donald Trump is an Untruthful President - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) gave a speech in which he sharply criticized President Trump as well as announcing that he would not be seeking re-election in 2018.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, another Republican Senator - Bob Corker, exchanged critical twitters with the President. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a short interview of Senator Corker - wherein he spoke of the President's "... difficulty with the truth..."

SENATOR CORKER (beginning at 1:12): Unfortunately, I think, World leaders are very aware that, ahum, Ω , much of what he says is untrue.

During 1:17, just before he says, "... much of what he says is untrue...", Senator Corker:

• Pauses
• Takes a deep inhalation
• The corners of his mouth move laterally and slightly up
• His lips tighten
• The tissue beneath his lower lip bulges
• He looks down to his right
• Torques his head (twice)
• Smacks his tongue

This nonverbal cluster is classic for the thought-emotions of Regret, Resignation, Frustration, and some Sadness.

MANU RAJU (1:59): Is the President of the United States a liar?

SENATOR CORKER: The President, ah, has great difficulty with the truth ∑ (during 2:05) ...  

This expression is that of regret (not mixed with other emotions).

SENATOR CORKER: ... on many issues ∆ (during 2:07).

This expression is also that of isolated regret.

The expression immediately above (during 2:14) is that of Contempt mixed with Disgust as Senator Corker says he would not support President Trump in an election again ("Nah. No way. Nah. No way...").

Summary: In this interview on Tuesday 24 October, Senator Bob Corker spoke at length about President Trump's "great difficulty with the truth" during which he most prominently displayed feelings of Regret. He also expressed Resignation, Sadness, Frustration, Contempt, and Disgust.

Body Language Analysis No. 4092: Rex Tillerson responds to Bob Corker's "Castration" Comment - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

This morning Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was interviewed by Jake Tapper on CNN's State of the Union. Among other subjects, Mr. Tapper addressed Senator Bob Corker's statement from earlier this week regarding President Trump's behavior toward Secretary Tillerson, specifically Senator Corker's statement of, "You cannot publicly castrate your own Secretary of State..."

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Secretary of State Tillerson.

JAKE TAPPER to REX TILLERSON: "I want to - ask about Senator Bob Corker who said something 'bout you. Ah, and he was referring - he's a friend of yours. He has - tremendous respect for you. He speaks highly of you all the time. He says that you're one of the best things about the cabinet. And he's dismayed. He thinks President Trump is constantly undermining you. This is a Republican Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He said, the President has, 'Castrated you before the World stage'. That's his word - not mine. What's your response to that?"

During 0:14 (captured immediately above), as Jake Tapper says, "... He thinks President Trump is constantly undermining you...", Secretary Tillerson tilts his head to his left and displays a classic microexpression. Watch this video several times - at normal speed and again at 1/2 speed as the photo does not show its dynamic nature.

Note how the corners of Rex Tillerson's mouth evanescently move slightly down and laterally - simultaneously with a tightening of his "mustache area" along with a subtle flaring of his nostrils. This is a classic microexpression - projecting a combination of both Disgust and Regret.

Summary: In this interview, Secretary of State Tillerson displayed a microexpression of combined Disgust and Regret immediately upon hearing the words "President Trump".

Body Language Analysis No. 4089: Donald Trump's Reaction to Bob Corker's World War III Comment - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Earlier today, during an appearance with Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office, Donald Trump was asked about Senator Bob Corker's statement regarding the President moving us “on the path to World War III.”

The President responded, "We were on the wrong path before — all you have to do is take a look — if you look over the last 25 years — with numerous administrations, we were on a path to — a very big problem. A problem like this World has never seen. We’re on the path right now, believe me."

But just before he answered, during 0:04 to 0:05, he shook his head laterally (e.g., "No") as he made the expression captured in the image below.

Notice the President's lips. They are stretched horizontally - almost in a straight line - nearly disappearing in their extreme thinning. This is not an inward lip roll, although a nonverbal novice may confuse the two signals.

His "mustache area" is very tightened while simultaneously his nostrils are flaring.

The President's jaw is clenched (betrayed by his chin dimpling) and jutting forward (a "Jaw Jut").

It's surprising at the high percentage of people misinterpret this expression when it's directed at them in the everyday world. This nonverbal cluster is highly indicative of anger with a secondary component of frustration.

Summary: Senator Bob Corker's recent statements regarding President Trump, where he said the President is like "a reality show" and leading us on the "path to World War III" (not surprisingly) elicits a high level of anger in Donald Trump.

Yesterday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made a statement and answered a few questions regarding conflicts which some have alleged he has had with President Trump. Along with specifically denying he has considered resigning, Secretary Tillerson also very notably refused to answer a question as to whether or not he called President Trump, "A Moron".

After the Secretary's statement, Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), went on record in support of Secretary Tillerson, Secretary of Defence James Mattis, and Chief of Staff John Kelly. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Senator Corker's Statement.

SENATOR CORKER (beginning at 0:00): I, I think, ah, Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Mattis, Ω∫ [lip smack] and, ah, Chief of Staff Kelly, ahum Ω∫ , are - those people that help separate our country from chaos. And, ah, Ω∫ [lip smack] I, ah, support them very much. Ahum Ω∫  [lip smack], and I, I don't know what he may have said after the briefing. Ahum [lip smack]. I watch from, I, I mean look - I see what's happening here - I deal with people throughout the administration - and, ahum I, he, he, from my perspective is in an incredibly frustrating place - where Ω∆ - ahum Ω∫  [lip smack] - as I watch, okay - and I can watch very closely on many occasions - I mean, I, you know, Ω he ends up not being supported in the way that I would hope a Secretary of State would be supported.

SENATOR CORKER: I, I, think he's in a very trying situation - trying to Ω, Ω∫ [lip smack] to ah Ω, solve many of the World's problems Ω, ahum, a lot of times without the kind of support and help that I'd like to see him have Ω∫ .

JOURNALIST A: Does he ever think about resigning at any point in time?

SENATOR CORKER: Ω I, I can't get into that.

JOURNALIST B: When you say that Tillerson, Mattis, and Kelly are separating this country from chaos - do you mean th-, from th-, President's chaos?

SENATOR CORKER: Well it's just they, they, they, they act in a very, ah, they work very well together to make sure that the policies that we put forth around the World Ω∆ are - you know ∆ - sound and coherent. There are other people Ω ah, ah, ah within the administration in my belief that don't Ω∆ - okay? I'm sorry.

This photo (immediately above) was captured during 0:09, just after the Senator says, "... Chief of Staff Kelly, ahum ..." and just prior to "... are - those people that help separate ..."

Notice the significant lateral vectoring of the corners of his mouth - this signifies Regret (Ω notates Regret displays in the dialog above). The Inward Lip Roll indicates a suppression of strong emotions - however, the outward bulging of the tissue below his lower lip projects Frustration (∫ notates Frustration).

This image shows Senator Corker, momentarily expressing Regret, just after he says, "... where ..." and before he says, "... ahum - as I watch, okay..." (during 0:36). Here we see his mouth corners pulled directly laterally.

Another simultaneous emotion in this moment is that of Disgust. Do you see it? It's subtle. (Slight tightening of the tissue in his "mustache area" along with mild flaring of his nostrils). Disgust is notated by the ∆ sign in the above dialog.

This last picture is more of a pure regret expression - although it occurs more during speech - just as Senator Corker begins to say, "I, I can't get into that" (During 1:02 - In response to a question as to whether Secretary Tillerson had considered resigning).

Note how this image is a bit blurry due to the Senator's head moving away from the journalist as he begins his answer - another manifestation of regret.

It's important to stress that this is but a partial nonverbal analysis with only some of the more prominent signals notated.

Summary: Senator Bob Corker has significant regret, frustration, and disgust for President Trump. He also has knowledge that Secretary Tillerson has, in fact, considered resigning.
