Body Language Analysis No. 4146: Roy Moore, Red Flags, and Sociopaths - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In this image of Roy Moore (as well as the close-up and third image below), we see an elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC) along with a "Mouth Smile". Yet this smile is anything but sincere.

Now, of course, every human being makes this same expression ... occasionally. We do so as a nonverbal manifestation of the following emotions:

• Arrogance
• Contempt
• Disbelief (specifically, Smug Incredulity)

It's normal to feel each of these emotions from time to time (provided they don't occur too frequently).

Additionally, each of these emotions can also be projected by different facial expressions.

So, while we all display this expression once-in-a-while, those individuals who are Sociopaths (Antisocial Personality Disorder) will display this facial configuration with much greater frequency vs. the general population.

No psychologically healthy person will display this facial expression with significant frequency.

Summary: Whenever an elevated Central Forehead Contraction occurs FREQUENTLY along with a "mouth smile" (it's usually only a partial mouth smile) - it's not only insincere, but it also has a very strong correlation with antisocial personality disorder (sociopathic behavior).

This nonverbal display is so characteristic of Roy Moore, that he even chose a photo of himself with this same expression to use as his Wikipedia profile picture.

Body Language Analysis No. 4060: Ted Cruz's Default Facial Expression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

There are people who, rather than maintaining relatively neutral faces - default to a few expressions which they nearly constantly "wear". These are very literally "physiologic masks". Ted Cruz is one of these people.

The image above shows the Texas Senator with his most common facial default.

The three key components of Cruz's expression are:

1. Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (Elevated-CFC)
2. Elevated Inner (medial) Eyebrows
3. Partial Mouth "Smile" (an insincere smile)

It's important to stress that his mouth is configured in an insincere smile and, as it is here - nearly always suppressed.

Of course, we all make this expression occasionally when we're feeling:

1. Arrogant
2. Contempt
3. Smug Disbelief

All three of these emotions may also be manifested by other facial expressions. It's also crucial to remember that we're all allowed to feel arrogant, contemptuous, or smug incredulity - after all, we're human (But hopefully we don't feel these too often).

While ninety-six percent of us make this expression once in a while, four percent of the population displays this expression quite often.

Other than the fact we don't like others to project arrogance, contempt, or disbelief in our direction - there's another reason we are repulsed by this expression: for most of the time when the central forehead and inner eyebrows are elevated - the mouth is configured in a painful or saddened manner. But when we see a bit of a smile with an elevated central forehead - it sends out red flags. It doesn't feel right. It's alienating. But not everyone catches this warning sign.

Summary: The frequent display of this expression (elevated central forehead contraction, elevated inner eyebrows, with a partial mouth smile) is, among other things, an extremely reliable signal for chronic insincerity.

Body Language Analysis No. 3961: Mike Rogers' Testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers displayed some telling nonverbal behavior during his back-and-forth with Senator Marco Rubio. Below is some of their dialog followed by a partial nonverbal analysis.

MARCO RUBIO (beginning at 1:12:49): Okay, well then in the interest of time, let me ask both of you - has anyone ever asked you - now or in the past - this administration or any administration - to issue a statement that you knew to be false?

MIKE ROGERS: For me, I stand by my previous statement. I've never been directed to do anything in the course of my three-plus years as director of the National Security Agency -

MARCO RUBIO (over-talking): Not directed, asked.

MIKE ROGERS: - that I felt to be inappropriate, nor have I felt pressure to do so.

MARCO RUBIO: Have you ever been asked to say something that isn't true?

MIKE ROGERS: I stand by my previous statement, sir.

MARCO RUBIO: Director Coats?

DAN COATS: I do likewise.

MARCO RUBIO: Well [moment captured below] let me ask this of everyone on this panel ...

During 1:13:20, just after Senator Rubio says, "Well...", National Security Agency Director, Mike Rogers' eyebrows pull together, while his left eyebrow and the inner (medial) portion of his right eyebrow are vectored downward - and the outer (lateral) portion of his right eyebrow is elevated.

Rogers' lower eyelids also grow tense in this moment. The region above his upper lip and below his nose (aka "mustache area") also display significantly increased tension. His nostrils flare. Rogers' lips take on a characteristically horizontal and thinned configuration.

Mike Rogers is angry. He is also incredulous that he's being questioned. Notice his forehead asymmetry. Along with the lateral portion of his right eyebrow - his right, lateral forehead is also elevating. But the remainder of his forehead is not contracted.

Summary: National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers displayed strong nonverbal signals of both anger and incredulity during his testimony on Wednesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee. While these behaviors do not alone indicate deception, their presence in this context significantly increases the likelihood that Rogers is not being completely truthful.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3894: Michael Flynn and Russia - "When are given immunity, it means you probably committed a crime" - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, Michael Flynn's attorney made it clear that the former National Security Advisor (from January 20, 2017, to February 13, 2017) is willing to be interviewed by US Senate and House of Representatives investigators - but only in exchange for the condition of immunity from prosecution.
Earlier today the Senate Intelligence Committee turned him down.

On 25 September 2016, Michael Flynn was a guest on NBC's Meet The Press. And although at the time of this article, NBC had removed the original video from that specific episode, the clip included above is a CNN segment which contains a portion of that original interview. Many people are finding Flynn's statement here (in addition to Donald Trump's which immediately follows it and is also included) as particularly ironic - while others view it as more of a foreshadowing - or a form of a Freudian slip.

Beginning at 0:57 and on through to 1:13, Michael Flynn says, "The l- [stutter] very last thing that John Podesta just said is, 'No individual too big to jail'. That should include people like Hillary Clinton. I mean five people around her have had, have been given immunity to include her former Chief of Staff. When you g- [stutter] are given immunity, it means you probably committed a crime."

Followed by Donald Trump (1:16 - 1:21) during his candidacy, "... And if you're not guilty of a crime, what do you need immunity for? Right?"

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Michael Flynn.

At many times during this short segment, Michael Flynn's forehead and eyebrows elevate in very quickly but for short duration. In addition, and more importantly, Flynn's left eyebrow also elevates unilaterally - multiple times and rather dramatically.

A nonverbal novice or even a person with a relatively moderate level of body language experience may identify these multiple, short-lived, rapid reactions as examples of "Microexpressions" - more specifically, microexpressions displaying doubt/disbelief/incredulity. Yet these facial movements are NOT Microexpressions. They are, rather, examples of tics - and more specifically, "Simple Motor Tics".

If one views previous videos of Michael Flynn - it's clear this behavior is longstanding. Additionally, these movements are a bit too frequent and strong - to be characteristic of microexpressions (somewhat of a nonverbal analog of a staccato).

Tics are described as "unvoluntary" or semi-voluntary - for they're not by definition involuntary. They are often characterized as a voluntary response to an unwanted and premonitory urge - that is, as an "irresistible urge, which must eventually be expressed". Tics may increase as a result of emotional states which are negative, such as anxiety, frustration -  as well as positive emotions, like anticipation or excitement. They can even arise out of boredom.

Conclusion: This nonverbal behavior of Michael Flynn is NOT a microexpression, as it may appear to some. Rather this is a facial tic - more specifically a longstanding simple motor tic. Although tics can increase in frequency with anxiety, this does not suggest necessarily that Flynn was nervous (or lying) in this scenario - since even boredom or excitement may also increase tic behavior.

Tune in next week (or sometime soon) for his testimony. Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3890: Ted Koppel on why he thinks Sean Hannity is bad for America - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

A friendly reminder: This post and the associated website serve as reference sources for the art and science of Body Language/Nonverbal Communication. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author. In an effort to be both practical and academic, many examples from/of varied cultures, politicians, professional athletes, legal cases, public figures, etc., are cited in order to teach and illustrate both the interpretation of others’ body language as well as the projection of one’s own nonverbal skills in many different contexts – not to advance any political, religious or other agenda.

This video clip from earlier today via CBS's Sunday Morning has gone a bit viral - and understandably so. In this segment, Fox's Sean Hannity and CBS's Ted Koppel throw more than a little mud at each other.

Included here is the transcript of their exchange, followed by a key nonverbal moment with analysis.

SEAN HANNITY (beginning at 5:50): We have to give some credit to the American people that they're somewhat intelligent - and that they know the difference between an opinion show and a news show.

TED KOPPEL: Yeah

HANNITY:  You're not, you're cynical, look at that, you

TED KOPPEL: Yeah, I'm cynical because ah, you know

HANNITY: You think we're bad for America?

TED KOPPEL: Yeah

HANNITY: You think I'm bad for America?

TED KOPPEL: Yep

HANNITY: You do?

TED KOPPEL: In the, in the long haul, I think you

HANNITY: Really?

TED KOPPEL: and all these opinions shows

HANNITY: That's sad Ted

TED KOPPEL: No, you know why?

HANNITY: That's sad

TED KOPPEL: Because you're very good at what you do and because you have, you have attracted a significantly more [inaudible]

HANNITY: You are selling the American people short

TED KOPPEL: Let me finish [inaudible] Let me finish the sentence

HANNITY: I'm listening

TED KOPPEL: Before you do that

HANNITY: With all due respect

TED KOPPEL: You - yes

HANNITY: Take the floor

TED KOPPEL: You have, you have attracted - people who are determined that ideology is more important than facts.

The image above, captured during 6:27, just after Hannity says, "With all due respect" - shows a very good example of an insincere smile.

What are the two primary signals in this moment telegraphing to the astute observer of Hannity's insincerity? What most people see first is his asymmetrical mouth. While an asymmetrical mouth can accompany a sincere smile (e.g., sometimes when it's just beginning - or toward the end of a sincere smile) - when such a unilateral mouth morphology is seen, it should send up significant signals to approach with caution.

His lips are also thinned and narrowed. This classic appearance indicates Hannity is feeling anger - but he is trying to "mask" it.

What many people will overlook is Hannity's forehead. Note there is an Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (CFC) - with an additional component of his right forehead also being elevated. If just one of these forehead signals were present - such a forehead appearance would project insincerity. The forehead must always be relaxed (not contracted) if the smile is to be sincere.

Notice also, Hannity's "mustache area" is tightened (contracted). Additionally, his right nostril is flared (dilated). These findings betray the emotion of contempt.

Summary: In this moment (6:27) Sean Hannity feels incredulity, anger, and contempt - although he is trying to "mask" these emotions with a smile - but he only succeeds in making an insincere one (feigned smile).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3779: Donald Trump Cover Shoot - Time Magazine's Person of the Year - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

On Wednesday Time Magazine announced it had selected Donald Trump as their 2016 "Person of the Year".

While some people may find Trump's pose"artsy" - from a nonverbal point of view, the image on Time's cover is particularly unusual in several ways.

We don't look directly at people who we don't like, don't believe or don't trust - and this body language is exemplified here in the extreme. Trump's lower body is pointed in the opposite direction. His abdomen is rotated a bit - and his torso a little more - yet they are still pointed approximately 90 - 100 degrees away from the camera.

On this cover we are getting Trump's proverbial "Cold Shoulder". And although such a hand position (as Trump shows here) is natural and common when rotating in a chair - it still conveys a closed-off emotional tone.

Mr. Trump's face is configured in one of his common default expressions - that of a combined anger and incredulity.

It's also very intriguing that Trump's chair is quite obviously worn and damaged. Although it's not part of him or his clothing - here the chair very strongly acts an extension of the President-elect. This is a visual metaphor, a nonverbal analog and most certainly is not accidental.

Summary: This pose, image and chair are very poor choices on the part of President Elect Trump. Its nonverbal message is: "I don't like you, I disrespect you, you're an afterthought and I've turned my back on you."

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3626: Mike Pence's Wikipedia Profile Picture says "WTF" - Body Language (PHOTO)

This is Governor Mike Pence's current Wikipedia Profile Pic. Keep in mind that on Wikipedia, he or his staff can change this photo anytime they wish.

Donald Trump's VP's facial expression here is one variation of what in common parlance most people would call a "WTF expression" (What The F*ck?!).

To approach this from a scientific, clinical and more specifically - a nonverbal viewpoint, the primary emotion being conveyed (and felt) here is Contempt while his secondary emotions in this moment are Disbelief/Incredulity and Disgust.

Regardless of one's political prominence, the views of your opponent or your beliefs - this is NEVER an image one should ever want to be representative of them - particularly those in leadership positions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3618: Salma Hayek regarding Donald Trump - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It turns out Donald Trump and Salma Hayek know each other. Ms. Hayek was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this year and the exchange in the video above provides some excellent body language teaching examples. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

0:15

Kimmel (beginning at 0:12): "Have you sp- (stutter) have you ever spoken to him?"
Hayek: "Yes, yes, I've known him for a long time."

This body language display is known as a "Hair Adjustment Behind the Ear" (HABE). It's seen more commonly manifested with women and gay men - and even though it's seen a bit more commonly in those with longer hair, it's also a frequent nonverbal in those with short hair. This is a signal of the psyche actively up-regulating its alpha status - as if to say, "I am going to need to be more assertive now."

0:17

Kimmel (beginning at 0:16): "Oh you have!"
Hayek: "Yeah, yeah."

As she says, "Yeah, yeah" - Salma has a classic Disgust expression on her face (above).

1:11

Hayek (beginning at 0:44): "I, You know, I don't think - he listens to - to me. No."
Kimmel: "You don't think he would listen to you, yeah."
Hayek: "No. It's - you don't need to talk sense into him. Everyone's entitled to their own madness - You need to talk sense into the people who are not seeing the madness."
[Audience: laughter, clapping, whooping]
Kimmel: "He can use a little of it too while we're at it."
Hayek: "It won't make any difference that way."

During the end of this exchange, as Salma says, "any difference that way" - note that her central forehead is contracted and elevated (Elevated CFC). When this forehead configuration is seen in conjunction with any semblance of a "Mouth Smile" - this combination dictates one of three thought-emotions (depending on the other nonverbals with which it's clustered). It's important to point out that such a smile is NEVER a sincere one of Joy-Happiness (Duchenne Smile). In this context, this mouth smile + CFC is indicative of incredulity. Ms. Hayek is transmitting a strong disbelief that talking sense into Donald Trump would be possible.

This website serves as an objective reference source for the science and art of Body Language/Nonverbal Communication.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3582: Brock Turner's Dad Draws Outrage of "20 Minutes of Action" - Lack of Empathy and No Remorse - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This is Brock Turner and his father Dan Turner. Brock Turner was Stanford University student and swimmer who raped an incapacitated, intoxicated, fully unconscious woman behind a dumpster on January 18, 2015. Two men caught him in the act and chased him down. They held him there until the police arrived.

Brock Turner was convicted of three sexual assault charges although he was initially charged with five different felonies: one count of raping an intoxicated person, one count of raping an unconscious person, one count of assault while attempting to commit rape as well as two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object.

The maximum sentence he could have received was 14 years. Prosecutors recommended that he receive a six-year prison sentence - however Judge Aaron Persky gave him a 6 month sentence after saying, "A [longer] prison sentence would have a severe impact on him" and that "I think he will not be a danger to others".

In a letter to the Court, Dan Turner said his son Brock, “has never been violent to anyone including his actions on the night of January 17th 2015,” as well as, "That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life."

In the image above we can see the younger Turner with his eyelids opened wider than baseline, nostrils flared, his lips slightly pursed, his mid-face tightened - indicative of fear. And although this is a still image, the blurriness of his Adam's apple suggests movement and a hard swallow consistent with fear's dry mouth and throat.

Dan Turner has his head and neck rotated towards his son with his right eyebrow and forehead raised while his left brow and forehead are lowered. This nonverbal cluster indicates disbelief and incredulity.

Neither man in this image displays any nonverbal signs of empathy or remorse.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3575: Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump - Comparison Their of Wikipedia Profile Photos - Body Language (PHOTOS)

These are the two primary profile photos of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump currently appearing on their respective Wikipedia pages. Of course with any given person having a significant public following, Wikipedia is the first or second most-viewed online source. And although it's primarily an open-source platform, editing of the Wikipedia pages of such higher level biographical pages is limited. There are a fair number of others pictures on each of the 2016 Presidential Candidates' pages - however these two are at the top, and thus by far are the most-viewed pics. Contrasting these two images, which have been almost surely vetted by the candidates - is instructive and insightful nonverbal exercise.

Note here that each image is magnified to the same width for the purpose of this post (with slightly different heights), however the resolution on Donald Trump's original image was significantly lower.

Hillary Clinton's image is posed and taken in a studio whereas Donald Trump's photo was taken at a live event (a town hall meeting at Pinkerton Academy, Derry, New Hampshire in August of 2015).

Secretary Clinton's expression is that of a fairly good "Social Smile" - however it's NOT a sincere smile. The corners of her mouth are pulled primarily upwards (with only the upper teeth visible) - and her cheeks also are (mostly) congruent with this change. Her forehead also displays the necessary requirement of being relaxed. So far so good - so it's a sincere smile?- NO. Look carefully at Hillary's eyes - for they are NOT partially closed - consistent with normal baseline. On the contrary - they are opened slightly (but very significantly) wider than baseline. If one looks at her lower eyelids - there are not the primary and temporary, concave-up furrows present - rather there are several little furrows - some of which are continuous with the "crows feet" at the lateral portion of each eye. This is the reason, when one is assessing a smile, NEVER use the presence of crows feet as a barometer for sincerity (as is sometimes, though erroneously suggested).

TAKE HOME POINT: If Mrs. Clinton had had a dominant, evanescent concave-up furrow on each of her lower eyelids (and the rest of her face was unchanged) - then her smile would have been a sincere smile of joy-happiness (Duchenne Smile) rather than the nice, but very posed, Social Smile.

Donald Trump's expression is certainly not a smile.

His head and torso are tiled away from the person at whom he is looking - and his head is also slightly rotated. We don't look directly at those whom we don't like, don't respect and/or don't believe.

His downward turned mouth corners along with a mild-to-moderate pout (primarily of his lower lip) is, for him, a very common nonverbal mouth display - perhaps his most frequent.

Note also his partially closed eyelids - along with his left eyebrow being raised.

TAKE HOME POINT: This nonverbal cluster present in Mr. Trump's image projects his feelings of doubt/incredulity along with a mild level of dislike and critical evaluation for the person(s) at whom he's looking - and/or their ideas/opinions/proposals, etc., being voiced.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3561: Catchphrase, Andy Samberg, Bryce Harper, Gigi Hadid and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

If you're a Nats fan, you may think Bryce Harper was a bit nervous ...

But before he cheated (twice) at catchphrase, Bryce Harper also dissed Gigi Hadid - both verbally AND nonverbally (by cutting in front of her at the game table). Jimmy Fallon and Andy Samberg react in disbelief - which can be seen during 1:31 (captured in the image below). Initially, both Jimmy's eye brows raise up - but his left one remains elevated longer. This longer duration display is an example of a macroexpression.

Andy Samberg's right eyebrow also shoots up - but very briefly in a microexpression of incredulity (please watch the video to see how short-lived this is).

A few seconds earlier (0:24 - 0:37, shown below during 0:33) both of Gigi's thumbs were hooked inside her front pockets.  While professional models, such as Ms. Hadid, may strike this and other poses by default - in nearly all other settings this is but one nonverbal example of sexual interest or sexual display.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3512: Emilia Clarke, "Me Before You" and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Emilia Clarke, of Game of Thrones fame, is starring in the upcoming film, Me Before You. In the trailer included above, Ms. Clarke displays a rare nonverbal variation.

Beginning at 1:48, Clarke's character (Louisa Clark) says to Sam Claflin (as William Traynor) "Didn't you ever love anything that much?"

During 1:49, as she says, "... love ...", you will note that along with her elevated central forehead contraction (elevated CFC), her right forehead also raises up and her right eyebrow correspondingly moves with it.

This facial expression is a variation which is rare. Very few people can elevate their central forehead as well as one side of their forehead at the same time (voluntarily or involuntarily). Often nonverbal novices will confuse this with the medical scenario of an attempt at the elevation of the entire forehead coupled with a concomitant unilateral facial palsy (such as a Bell's Palsy). A well-known public figure in whom we can observe this is Senator John McCain.

When an elevated CFC is seen in conjunction with a mouth smile (as is exemplified here) one thought-emotion which should come to mind is incredulity. Depending on the other nonverbal signs with which it is clustered, it may also signal contempt or arrogance (yet not in this moment). Moreover when an eyebrow is elevated unilaterally - along with the forehead on that same side, we also should think of disbelief. In this scene the actress known by many as Daenerys Targaryen, displays both expressions simultaneously - strongly driving home the emotion to her audience.

The art of acting does not, of course, simply consist of memorizing scripts and speaking them with correct timing and emphasis - acting also involves body language. When all three - the nonverbal, the verbal and the vocal qualities are all congruent - it is in these moments when we recognize skilled acting.
