Body Language Analysis No. 4362: Mohammed bin Salman regarding the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Mohammed bin Salman, together with other heads-of-state, will be meeting later this week in Buenos Aires at the G20 Summit. The Saudi leader made his first public comment regarding the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on 24 October 2018. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the Crown Prince's behavior during this event.

Mohammed bin Salman's translated statement (as provided with this video) follows:

"First of all, the crime was really painful to all Saudis and I believe, it is painful to every human in the world. It is a heinous crime that cannot be justified. Today Saudi Arabia is carrying out all legal things to finalize the investigation, to cooperate with the Turkish government and to present the perpetrators to the court and take their judgement. This is the expected thing that all governments would do once they see a crime. Undoubtedly the cooperation today between the Saudi and Turkish government is unique and we know that many are trying to use this painful thing to drive a wedge between Saudi Arabia and Turkey. I would like to send a message: They will not be able to do that as long as there is a king called King Salman Abdul Aziz - [another long pause with audience applause] and a crown prince called Mohammed bin Salman, in Saudi Arabia - [long pause with audience applause] - and a President in Turkey called Erdoğan. This wedge will not - [pause with audience applause]. This wedge will not happen and we will prove to the world that the two governments are cooperating to see that all perpetrators are taken to court - and that justice will be seen in the end. This is what I can say regarding this issue [audience applause]."

During 0:06, Mohammed bin Salam sniffs quite dramatically - a dynamic he displays many times during this relatively short statement. This is camouflaged contempt.

Rather than an overt contempt display - the psyche disguises it with a sniff.

Now, look back one second (during 0:05). The Saudi prince displays a Central Forehead Contraction (CFC) - more specifically this is an Elevated CFC (note his inner [medial] eyebrows elevating). It's profoundly important to observe what the mouth is doing simultaneously or nearly simultaneously - and as we just observed, a second later, it's projecting contempt.

If he truly felt sorrow and empathy for Jamal Khashoggi - and/or if he sincerely felt that "... the crime was really painful to all Saudis and I believe, it is painful to every human in the world...", then Mohammed bin Salman would instead have had a mouth of sadness - with its corners down-turned - together with his elevated central forehead contraction - and he absolutely would NEVER display contempt (disguised or otherwise).

A few seconds later, during 0:12, the Saudi Prince displays Disgust combined with Feigned Consideration.

Less than a second later (0:12), he again displays contempt - this time it's seen on the opposite side of his face - and it's not buried in the ruse of a sniff.

Less than a second later (0:13), the Prince displays an elevated central forehead contraction.

So, once again the juxtaposition of an elevated CFC with contempt signals a profound red flag.

During 0:24, as he says, "... with the Turkish government and to present the perpetrators to the court...", Mohammed bin Salam positions his arm/elbow up on the back of the chair. Note once again we see an elevated central forehead in the absence of mouth sadness.

In this context, such a cluster of behavior displays an intriguing dissonance. For while there is an attempt to project a confident, hyper-alpha emotional tone, the holding of his own hand betrays his need for cover and protection.

During 0:34 - we see a more dramatic contempt camouflaged in a sniff.

With another elevated CFC display seen just an instant prior to the contempt ...

... and another, longer duration, elevated CFC immediately after the contempt (during 0:35 - 0:41)

And more clandestine contempt-sniffing during 0:47

Again, contempt simultaneous with the beginnings of a Loose Tongue Jut (0:54)

Here, his Loose Tongue Jut is fully expressed (0:55).

A loose tongue jut signifies the thought-emotions of:

• I've been bad
• I've been caught
• I've done a stupid thing

Another elevated CFC (0:56)

This contempt display - during 1:05 as he mentions his father, King Salman Abdul Aziz, is accompanied by the narrowing/partial closing of his eyelids. This eyelid dynamic, although not required, here serves as a contempt amplifier.

As the audience gives an extended applause for the King, Mohammed bin Salman again displays more contempt.

During 1:10, Mohammed bin Salam reconfigures his hands and arms into a modified fig leaf as he prepares to say his own name. This is significantly beta body language demonstrating the Saudi leader's feeling of vulnerability and is maintained as he mentions Erdoğan.

During 1:25, the Prince displays another Loose Tongue Jut just after he speaks his own name.

During 1:39 he resumes his emotionally dissonant posture while attempting to appear relaxed and alpha (hyper-alpha).

More contempt during 1:50

Yet again juxtaposed with another elevated central forehead contraction (1:51)

As human beings, we're all are allowed to occasionally feel contempt - but hopefully, not too often. When contempt is exhibited so frequently - particularly in public, it's highly correlated with Impulse Control Disorder.

Mohammed bin Salman's contempt is also coupled with many displays of Elevated Central Forehead Contractions. If this pattern is seen over time, the correlation with Antisocial Personality Disorder (Sociopathy) is extremely likely.

SUMMARY:

Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, does not feel any empathy or sadness in the murder of the Jamal Khashoggi. Moreover, he feels dramatic contempt toward the dissident journalist as well as those who would question him in the killing of Khashoggi.

Intriguingly, Mohammed bin Salman also has contempt for his father, King Salman Abdul Aziz.

In addition, Mohammed bin Salman's nonverbal behavior, standing on its own, indicates with very high probability, that he orchestrated the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. When one couples the Prince's body language behavior together with the CIA's recent conclusion - the Crown Prince's guilt is solidified.

Body Language Analysis No. 4343: Idris Elba, Kate Winslet, Anxiety, and Empathy - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (Video, Photos)

Idris Elba is by most all accounts, an excellent actor. But despite many accolades and awards, Idris, is of course, only human. During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, he experienced a very human moment - and displayed a classic nonverbal tell.

Just after Graham Norton says, "... a-, but we have to say, it was a-, your American accent has not always been - that good."

As Idris says, "Mm-hmm, mm-hmm", he sucks his cheeks inward (1:06). Often times this MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) involves biting the insides of one's cheeks with a mild-to-moderate degree of force. This cheek-biting indicates significant anxiety.

It's important to note that this dynamic of biting the inner cheeks has the effect of pursing the lips forward - but this is a secondary effect - and does not carry the same meaning of a primary forward lip purse. Be careful not to mistake the two expressions.

A second later, his central forehead is contracted and elevated (along with his inner eyebrows). Mr. Elba's central face has grown tense. His nostrils are flared. Simultaneous with his inner cheek biting, Idris' lips take on an additional slightly sad configuration.

Kate Winslet then displays a bilateral full palm-of-hand (full palmar) contact with her upper sternum/heart region as well as her lower sternum as she says, "My insides ...".

Her nonverbal signal indicates both elevated empathy and high sincerity.

As she finishes her sentence, "... are constricting for you right now", Ms. Winslet, also physically constricts her fists.

SUMMARY: Despite being outstanding actors, when Idris Elba and Kate Winslet are not in-character (and just being themselves), their body language gives us glimpses into their psyches.

Idris Elba was experiencing significant anxiety which elicited similar feelings in Kate Winslet. Ms. Winslet displays considerable empathy and sincerity toward Mr. Elba.

Body Language Analysis No. 4261: President Trump's Address regarding the Retaliatory Strike on Syria - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 14 April 2018, the United States, United Kingdom, and France carried out a coordinated retaliatory military air strike against the Syrian government. This act was in response to the chemical weapons attack the Syrian forces perpetrated upon their own people on 7 April 2018 in Douma. The Syrian government has denied they carried out this mass-poisoning and have called the retaliation a violation of international law.

Shortly after the retaliatory attack, Donald Trump addressed the nation from the White House. A video of this speech is included above. What follows is a nonverbal and paralanguage analysis of one crucial segment of his address.

PRESIDENT TRUMP (continuing at 6:38): ... We saw the anguish that can be unleashed and the evil that can take hold.  By the end of World War - One - more than one million people had been killed or injured by chemical weapons. We never want to see that ghastly specter return...

During 6:47, just as he's finishing saying the word, "... War ..." the President:

• Contracts and Elevates his Central Forehead Muscles
• His mouth hyper-gesticulates
• Crucially, his mouth does NOT take on a saddened configuration
• Tilts his head/neck to his right
• Raises his right shoulder

When a sincere person is feeling emotional or physical pain for her/himself - or experiencing these feelings for another person/group of people via empathy - their:

• Central Forehead Contracts & Elevates
• Mouth takes on a sad, scared, or painful configuration

The elevated central forehead contraction (an elevated CFC, not the entire width of the forehead - but just the central [medial] portion) is a monumentally important nonverbal display - which the vast majority people don't nuance. This includes those individuals who constantly attempt to feign empathy - and this is exactly what the President is doing here. Although we certainly don't welcome their bad behavior, we should be thankful for their poor acting skills - for it allows us to suss out the insincere people from the sincere ones.

A split-second later (still during 6:47), as the President says, "... One ...", he shrugs with his:

• Shoulders
• Hands
• Eyebrows
• Forehead

• He also Rapidly torques his head

§ Note: Although Donald Trump's forehead is moderately treated with Botox, we are still able to see these important contractions/dynamics.

A shrug indicates the thought-emotion of:

• I don't know
• I don't care
• What does it matter?

A shoulder shrug (or any of the lesser-appreciated shrugs) are COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTEXT HERE. Why would a person be thinking-feeling such emotions when talking about the issue of deaths in chemical warfare? In waging war? If one is operating from the foundation and premise of empathy - there is NO REASON.

Another excellent insincerity tell is exhibited in this same moment from a Paralanguage/Statement Analysis perspective:

• The hyperbolic emphasis of the word "One" (both in tone and in volume).

Why is this word emphasized? Always remember: When the less important words of a sentence are emphasized - while the some of the more important ones are monotone/homogenized -  it's a monumentally classic signal of insincerity.

Additionally - when you observe both nonverbal signals of insincerity simultaneous with paralanguage flags of insincerity - you can be 100% certain that the person's thoughts and feelings are not congruent with their words. They are lying. They have other agenda. Protect your flank.

Summary: President Trump was insincere during this address. He was feigning empathy. He's parroting this emotion. He's character acting. It's one thing to be insincere passively - it's more nefarious to actively fake it.

While you may or may not agree with President Trump's decision (or the UK's or France's) to retaliate against Syria (or the precise manner/timing of their retaliation) - that is not what this analysis is discussing. I'm here to analyze and teach nonverbal behavior.

What many people do NOT understand, is when the central forehead is contracted and elevated - but the mouth is not simultaneously sad, scared, or expressing pain - the person is experiencing a completely different set of emotions (e.g., CFC with Sad/Scared/Painful Mouth vs. CFC with other types of mouth expressions). While this may sound like geeky-detail - it's one of the most important nonverbal distinctions you'll ever learn. It will save you time, money, hassle, a bad marriage, and maybe your life.

Commit yourself right now - to collecting images/screen-grabs and their corresponding URLs of these two expression variations. Study them and refer to them often. And whenever you see these displayed by others in your own, real-life experiences - take detailed mental notes.

Body Language Analysis No. 4258: Sarah Huckabee Sanders' reaction to the question: "Has the President at Any Time thought about Stepping Down?" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

On Tuesday, 10 April 2018, during the White House Press Briefing - April Ryan, the Correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks, asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders a historic question. What follows is an analysis of the Press Secretary's nonverbal response.

APRIL RYAN (beginning at 9:28): With all of this turmoil, particularly this last week, has the president at any time - thought about stepping down - before or now?

SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS: Ah, No - and I think that's a - absolutely ridiculous question.

APRIL RYAN: No it's not. It's not ridiculous. It's not ridiculous.

SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS: I gave you two questions April, we're moving on. Jordan, go ahead Ω

APRIL RYAN: It's not ridiculous.

JORDAN: Thanks. Thanks Sarah. Did § did National Security Advisor, John Bolton force Tom Bossert out of his job?

During 9:36 - Sarah Huckabee Sanders displays Anger - along with overt Contempt as she says, "Ah, No - and I think".

Anger: Note her eyebrows - which are pulled together and vectored downward - along with substantial tension in her lower eyelids.

Contempt: The asymmetry and preferential contraction/elevation of her left, mid-facial region.

During 9:43, just after she says, "Jordan, go ahead" (notated by the Ω symbol), Ms. Huckabee Sanders elevates her Central Forehead - simultaneous with opening her eyelids wider than baseline (Fear) - and a mouth configured in a High-Anxiety + Regret expression.

This is an utterly classic expression - and while, on its own, certainly does not indicate that the President is stepping down - it absolutely does indicate that the Press Secretary is Fearful this is a possibility

During 9:47 (notated with the § symbol) we see Sarah Huckabee Sanders displays a second expression of Contempt.

During 9:48 (as Jordan says, "National Security Advisor"), the Press Secretary rubs her upper forehead with her dominant (right) hand. This gesture (one type of MAP [Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier]) is a very common signal of elevated anxiety.

Summary: In this 12-second segment (9:36 - 9:48) - Sarah Huckabee Sanders displays substantial emotional fluctuation, oscillating rapidly from Contempt - to High Anxiety-Fear-Regret - back to Contempt - then back to Anxiety. The Press Secretary's nonverbal behavior is screaming. Her rapid dynamic is a textbook example of Emotional Dissonance. She's having significant difficulty aligning her true thoughts and feelings with her verbal statements.

Body Language Analysis No. 4219: Ivanka Trump's Reaction to Question regarding Donald Trump's Sexual Assault Accusers - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ivanka Trump, daughter and advisor to President Donald Trump, was interviewed today in South Korea. What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of a crucial portion of that exchange (video above).

PETER ALEXANDER (beginning at 1:45): Do you believe your father's accusers?

IVANKA TRUMP: [deep inhalation, Ω ] I think it's a pretty inappropriate question to ask a daughter - [deep inhalation] - if she believes [deep inhalation] Ahummm --- the accusers of her father when he's affirmatively stated that there's no truth to it. [deep inhalation] I don't think that's a question you would ask - many other - daughters. I believe my father. I know my father - so, I-, I think I have that right as a daughter [inhalation] Ummm, to- [inhalation], ah - believe my father.

Just after Peter Alexander asks, "Do you believe your father's accusers?", during 1:48, as she deeply inhales (notated by the Ω  symbol), Ivanka looks down and to her right - while contracting and elevating her central forehead muscles (This forehead dynamic is somewhat difficult to visualize due to her heavy Botox usage). Simultaneously, her inner (medial) eyebrows also contract upward.

Looking down and to the right upon being asked a question with an accusatory nature is strongly indicative of guilt, shame, and sadness.

An elevated central forehead contraction (elevated CFC) in this same question-cluster-context indicates emotional pain.

During 2:04, as she says, "... I don't think ...", Ms. Trump displays the same elevated central forehead contraction (again, blunted by Botox).

This behavior is repeated once more, during 2:12, as she says, "... I think I have ..."

During 1:59 - 2:08, as she says, "... when he's affirmatively stated that there's no truth to it. [deep inhalation] I don't think that's a question you would ask - many other - daughters ...", Ms. Trump uses a  Pseudo-Prayer with a Hand-Chop followed by a Pseudo-Prayer in isolation. This display is somewhat obscured by the banner/chyron at the bottom of the screen.

Outside of the exceptions of some religious contexts and a few (primarily Asian) cultures, a pseudo-prayer projects a patronizing and condescending emotional tone. This is the meaning in most of the World's cultures. These feelings are amplified by the accompanying chopping motion.

As she says, "I believe my father. I know my father" and - so, I-, I think I have that right as a daughter [inhalation] Ummm, to- [inhalation], ah - believe my father", Ivanka Trump shrugs her left shoulder three times in succession - a movement is which is not mirrored by her right shoulder (Again, this movement is also partially obscured by the banner/chyron at the bottom of the screen).

These unilateral shoulder shrugs performed simultaneously with positive affirmations, (e.g. "I believe my father", "I think I have that right...", and "believe my father") are profoundly contradictory to her words.

In this context, a unilateral shoulder shrug is an example of what in nonverbal parlance is known as a Partial Emblematic Slip.

From a statement analysis/paralanguage point-of-view, Ms. Trump's, use of the word choice, "I think I have that right as a daughter [inhalation] Ummm, to- [inhalation], ah - believe my father" is an odd and telling one - implying that truth is a right to believe rather than an objective reality to be sought.

What's incredibly telling behavior is that Ivanka Trump never says, "no", "no, I don't believe these accusers", "no, absolutely not", etc. - rather she speaks about an "inappropriate question" and her "right to believe".

Her strongest endorsement of the President was when she says, "I believe my father" - however, this is a free-floating, nonspecific statement - not a definitive "no" - and again, she does this while committing the contradictory unilateral shoulder shrug.

The word "inappropriate" is a highly subjective word which is used under the guise of objectivity. Its meaning is anything but objective. It's a red-flag word.

Summary: Ivanka Trump's verbal, nonverbal and paralanguage behavior indicates she believes at least some of the women who have accused her father, President Donald Trump, of sexual assault.

Body Language Analysis No. 4207: Stoneman Douglas High School shooting (Parkland, Florida), Donald Trump, Ronald Reagan, and Empathy - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

There was a profoundly important facial expression Donald Trump never displayed during his statement on Thursday in response to Wednesday's School shooting at Stoneman Douglas HS (Parkland, Florida) - he never projected any expression of empathy for others' suffering.

The ability to feel and show empathy is fundamentally necessary to be fully human.

In this context, particularly, empathy is absolutely an emotion the President should have felt - and displayed - yet he did NOT show any expressions of empathy. The emotions of grief, anguish, and deep sorrow - and the shared experience one feels for other peoples' suffering are some of the most powerful feelings possible. The facial expression displayed in such contexts is identical whether their suffering is physical, emotional, or both.

Contrast this recent event with another national disaster. On the evening of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster (28 January 1986) President Ronald Reagan gave an address and consoled the World.

Notice carefully how the muscles of President Reagan's central forehead are contracted and vectored upward (thus termed an elevated CFC). Simultaneous, his medial (inner) eyebrows are also elevated - while, at the same time his lateral (outer) eyebrows are lowered.

Crucially, the corners of his mouth are at the same time also turned downward (the entire speech is included below).

Regardless of your political beliefs, if you were watching his reaction that day, you had no doubt President Reagan was truly feeling grief for the families and loved-ones of those seven Astronauts. It's also not surprising (to those with moderate or high empathy quotients) that just by looking at a picture or video of another person who is sad, suffering, or grieving (without even knowing any specifics) - will engender those same emotions in the viewer.

Summary: Grieving is absolutely necessary for healing. When a leader has the ability to grieve - and displays their grieving - they give both a momentary and historical personification for our collective emotions. And it's in the moments when our love and our grief are shared that we're most human.
