Body Language and Behavior Analysis No. 4747: Donald Trump is adopting a new Body Language – Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

Today Fox News aired a new interview with Donald Trump. It was recorded yesterday at Bedminster. What follows is a partial body language analysis of a few crucial nonverbal signals he displayed during this interview:

In this interview, Donald Trump adopted a particular body language behavior that I've only seen him display one other time in the past 9 years (and I've analyzed him thousands of times). What, specifically, was this – and what was its significance given this pattern?...

Donald Trump crossed his ankles when he was sitting. As stated above, for Trump this nonverbal display is extremely rare.

Trump maintained this leg-foot configuration throughout the vast majority of this interview (although the camera was not always showing a wide-angle, so it's possible this was not quite as frequently displayed as the edited version implies).

Regardless of the person being interviewed, with rare exception, this ankle crossing/lower leg crossing is not a wise leg-foot posture to adopt during an interview. Why? Because it both engenders – as well as a sign of – emotional discomfort and lower confidence.

Due to Trump's extreme propensity for keeping both his feet flat on the floor, this change in his behavior is extremely significant. Again, he kept them this way for most of the interview.

When Trump was asked, "What *are* you looking for in a vice president?"

Trump answers, "So you always have to say, and I, I mean it – is if something should happen to the president, ya have to get somebody can [sic] be a good presid't [sic]. Okay? And I think you have to say that..."

Trump's verbal answer, "if something should happen to the president" – is conspicuous and telling. While he may very well have stated qualities he feels are desirable in a vice president before, he's never implied his own mortality in this context.

Now note what his feet [as the camera switches, displaying a wider view] do immediately after he says this – they squirm:

People show anxiety in their feet all the time – most people just don't look at them (or can't see it very often – and rarely directly [most of the time people are also wearing shoes], feet are beneath a table, not on camera, etc.).

Flexing and extending one's toes and the entire foot/feet within our shoes as well as moving the entire foot/feet and lower legs are further nonverbal manifestations of this anxiety.

Now look at Trump's hands. Trump's not displaying his usual low steeple (low conventional steeple) in this moment – rather he's covering his left (non-dominant) hand over his right (dominant) hand.

The position of his hands in relation to his groin is a variation of a seated fig leaf – a further signal of vulnerability – and additionally, fear.

Trump also significantly slouches his shoulders forward while elevating them – dynamically shortening his neck ("Turtling") whilst closing his eyelids during this moment. *Extremely low confidence and emotional discomfort*:

SUMMARY: Trump's foot-leg configuration he adopts throughout the majority of this interview indicates his significantly lowered confidence and emotional discomfort as a result of his 34 Felony Convictions for Election Interference.

Donald Trump's body language (coupled with his verbal language) indicates he has significant anxiety about not living long enough to serve a full second term. Trump is feeling his own mortality – and it's showing.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3776: VP Elect Mike Pence Defends Trump's Claim of Voter Fraud - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Vice President Elect Mike Pence was a guest on This Week early today. Host George Stephanopoulos pressed the Indiana Governor regarding President Elect Donald Trump's claim of millions cases of voter fraud. From a body language perspective there's an excellent example in this interview of an often seen yet rarely discussed classic facial expression - the "Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression" (abbreviated R2E2).

During 2:47 - 2:48 in the above video, as Pence says, "...  the, the connection ...", (during the sub-sentence "...  and ahhhh, I, I think ahhh, I think the, the connection that he made in the course his campaign is a reflection of that ...") - Pence displays a classic R2E2 expression (captured below).

The R2E2 is a nonverbal facial expression which can last for very short duration (for a fraction of a second as a "Microexpression" or "Near-Microexpression") - however it may also be present for longer time periods (in this example it last for approximately 0.9 seconds). Most body language rookies will confuse the R2E2 with the expression (and thus also the emotion) of disgust - yet these two nonverbals have completely different meanings.

It's important to note that while every emotionally-healthy person displays the Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression on occasion - when it is seen, and especially when it's displayed more often frequently, you would be well-advised to contemplate each of the following:

  • What do my instincts tell me of this person's motive(s) in this moment?
  • Does this person seem like they believe what they are saying?
  • On what idea/opinion (very specifically), are they trying to persuade me?
  • What is my "gut feeling" of their sincerity in this moment?
  • If I could pick one emotion of theirs to describe the moment, what would it be?
  • Are my own emotions causing me to be biased?
  • Do I feel as if they are putting extra effort into trying to sell me on their idea or opinion?
  • Does it seem as if they showing me their "Achilles Heel" too easily?
  • Is there a specific weakness of theirs which is being discussed?

A very high percentage of the time, people who are displaying the R2E2 are trying to rationalize - AND are trying (subconsciously and consciously) to get you to CO-rationalize. They're trying to convince you (as well as their own psyche) of an idea or opinion in which they do not themselves' believe (or don't fully believe). Be careful when you see the R2E2 Expression - because it's seen when others are trying too hard to gain your rapport, trust and empathy.

Summary: Although every human being displays the R2E2 on occasion - but when you see it used too frequently (or during a particularly crucial portion of a conversation) - fed flags have been raised (Can you see them?).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3714: Vice Presidential Debate - Tim Kaine v. Mike Pence - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Governor Mike Pence and Senator Tim Kaine faced off tonight in their only Vice Presidential debate of this Campaign cycle.

You may have noticed that Tim Kaine's left eyebrow and left forehead muscles were elevated significantly more (in both frequency and amplitude) versus his right side. If we only had seen a short video sample or some still images we may conclude that this was a nonverbal signal of Kaine's disbelief regarding some of Pence's (or Trump's) statements, opinions or actions. And while there's no doubt that Hillary Clinton's running mate certainly felt such incredulity - the majority of the time this was not cause for this particular facial configuration.

What, then were we seeing?

Senator Kaine has a partial facial nerve palsy on his right side (probably congenital or from trauma early in life). This gives the (false) appearance of over-action of his left forehead. The facial nerve (Cranial Nerve VII) innervates (among other things) the muscles on each side of the face (there's one for the left side and one which innervates the muscles on the right). As with most all medial problems there's a list of possible etiologies (trauma, asymmetrical Botox reaction, congenital, tumor, lyme disease, etc.) and if all other causes are ruled out, this condition would then properly be termed "Bell's Palsy" (a diagnosis of exclusion). Tim Kaine's partial facial nerve palsy thus makes it erroneously appear (at least some of the time) that he's incredulous.

Of course, such a condition does not prevent Kaine from thinking-feeling disbelief, but it does make us more likely to misinterpret him - AND thus, importantly, also makes him less likable. This is one occasion where Botox should indeed be used to partially mute the action of his left forehead - thereby enabling his facial expressions to take on a more symmetrical, friendly - and accurate appearance.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3632: Hillary Clinton formally introduces Tim Kaine as her VP Choice - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today Hillary Clinton formally introduced Senator Tim Kaine as her pick for VP. Kaine has also held the offices of the Governor of Virginia as well as the Mayor of Richmond.

This was his first speech as a Vice Presidential candidate and although many felt he performed well, he did show several significant nonverbal signals of anxiety - two of which are discussed here.

Tim Kaine displayed a relatively rapid shifting back and forth from foot to foot, swiveling his weight and turning his body as he did so. While this can certainly be associated with an inexperienced speaker, here it is a signal of what many would call "nervous energy" - a byproduct of his temporary hyper-adrenaline state. Most probably in the upcoming weeks, this relatively high frequency shifting and turning will slow down considerably.

Another signal of anxiety is Kaine's frequent placing of his left hand in his front pant pocket. More specifically, this behavior signals a momentary "Beta-flux" (more beta, less alpha) - projecting a temporary lower emotional comfort and a short-lived shift to lower levels of confidence.

While occasionally placing one or both hands in the back pants pockets (overly the buttocks, with the elbows pointed out and vectored slightly backward - see example below) is a good example of an alpha-beta hybrid and should be employed from time to time (as long as it's not practiced too frequently or for relatively longer duration) - placing either or both hands in the front pants pockets should never be practiced. This is particularly true during a speech while seeking (or holding) a position of leadership.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3626: Mike Pence's Wikipedia Profile Picture says "WTF" - Body Language (PHOTO)

This is Governor Mike Pence's current Wikipedia Profile Pic. Keep in mind that on Wikipedia, he or his staff can change this photo anytime they wish.

Donald Trump's VP's facial expression here is one variation of what in common parlance most people would call a "WTF expression" (What The F*ck?!).

To approach this from a scientific, clinical and more specifically - a nonverbal viewpoint, the primary emotion being conveyed (and felt) here is Contempt while his secondary emotions in this moment are Disbelief/Incredulity and Disgust.

Regardless of one's political prominence, the views of your opponent or your beliefs - this is NEVER an image one should ever want to be representative of them - particularly those in leadership positions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3625: Donald Trump Introduces Mike Pence as his "1st Choice" VP Pick (Not!) - Body Language Signs (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although he made the announcement via Twitter yesterday, earlier today in New York City, Donald Trump officially introduced Mike Pence as his running mate. It's been widely reported that Trump wanted to back out of this choice at the 11th hour.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this introduction.

In the video above, Trump begins, "I'd would like to introduce a man who I truly [left shoulder shrug] believe will be outstanding in every way ..."

During 0:03 - 0:04, note how Trump's left shoulder shrugs in a very quick and in dramatic fashion.

A shoulder shrug is a nonverbal signal of: "What does it matter?", "I don't care", "I don't know"  or "What could I do/What choice did I have?"

A shrug may also involve the entire arm, the thumbs, mouth, knees and even the feet.

Trump finishes his sentence (continued immediately from above), "... and will be - the next - Vice President of the United States - Governor Mike Pence, thank you. Thank you everybody. Thank you."

He then displays a combination shrug and his torso turns AWAY from Pence (0:13 - 0:14) This is also very sudden, relatively dramatic and is unnatural in appearance.

This "Torso Turning Away" from the person who he's introducing (and with whom he is supposed to believe is the most qualified to run the country should something happen to him) - is a profound example of disparity between spoken language and nonverbal language. This dynamic shows disrespect for Pence - as well as a lack of confidence in either his VP decision and/or Pence himself.

Whenever the two are incongruous - it's the nonverbal signals which tell the true thoughts and emotions - not the spoken word.

After Trump shakes Pence's hand and pats him/holds Pence's right shoulder (we can't see good detail here), Trump then pat's Pence's left shoulder twice - but not fully. Trump's right hand shows us that he doesn't want to fully touch Pence - look closely. When we pick up a dirty rag, typically we only use our thumb and forefinger - the rest of the fingers "play keep-away". This is a distancing phenomenon/insulating behavior. It also has overtones of disgust. In the video above this is of lower resolution, yet it can still be seen.

In the context of an introduction such as this, it's normal for Pence to look directly at Trump's eyes (or whomever is introducing him). Yet after their hands' hands touch, Trump's eye contact lasts for only for about 1.5 seconds. Thus Trumps spends very little bonding time in this introduction. This is a very symbolic moment and more time should be spent here. This is the public's moment to see them bond - and thus experiencing the bonding vicariously.

Whenever two people meet and shake hands - even if they've met 1000 times, this is an occasion when direct eye contact should occur for 3-4 seconds (whereas in other parts of the ensuing conversation this may feel like a bit like staring, but this is not so during the handshake). To not do so projects a lack of respect (although there can be other reasons - what are some of these?). Because he's formally introducing the potential next vice-president (and even a potential president considering Trump, if elected, would be the oldest first term US president in history), the audience and public should see more warmth and brotherhood in this moment - but simply it's not there.

Unbelievably, Trump then just walks away and leaves Pence alone. The significance of this literal, metaphorical and nonverbal abandonment cannot be over stated - it's a faux pas among faux pas.

Note that Pence's smile in this moment is sincere, but Trump's facial expression is anything but sincere - not even a remotely. Moreover there is a component of disgust on Trump's face. It's also worth mentioning that Governor Pence has some type of braces on his upper teeth. Many adults wearing braces are very self-conscious and thus find it difficult to smile sincerely.

During another portion of the speech (won't allow embedding however link is here and captured in the image immediately above at the 10:45 mark) of the same event, Trump continues, "Now I think, if you look at, one of the big reason's I chose Mike - and one of the reasons is party unity, I have to be honest. So many people [strong inhalation, disgust display], have said, 'Party Unity', cause I'm and outsider ..."

Incredibly, the song that was playing over the PA just prior to Trump coming on stage was The Rolling Stones, "You Can't Always Get What You Want".

In addition, the primary reason for this speech was introducing Mike Pence, yet Trump spent the vast majority of time discussing other issues.

In summary, Donald Trump displays significant disgust either directly for Pence or about his own choice in Governor Mike Pence as his VP pick. He transmits multiple examples of nonverbal distancing behavior and lack of respect for Pence. Most importantly, Trump's disgust display when he speaks of other people preaching "party unity" implies that he felt significant pressure from outside his team to pick a running mate who was not his first choice.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3623: Donald Trump's VP Pick - Mike Pence & Chris Christie - Body Language (PHOTOS)

Who will Donald Trump pick as his running mate? From a nonverbal communication perspective, this image (with Trump Shaking Indiana Governor Mike Pence's hand while Christie looks on) provides a glimpse into the Chris Christie's mind. The Governor of New Jersey is certainly not known for his poker face - and this moment is no exception.

In this close-up view of Christie, we can see his clear display of two emotions - both Disgust and Anger. Of these two, disgust is a bit more prominent (approximately 60/40). His eyebrows are pulled down and inward with tension in his (right) lower eyelid - these findings are indicative of anger. His lower face (mouth) is projecting both feelings (If you configure your own mouth similarly, you will even begin to feel these two emotions). Christie's mid-face also displays significant tells - with his "Mustache area" tightening and his nostril(s) flaring.

Take home point: Chris Christie feels both disgust and anger toward his fellow republican Governor - which indicates that he believes Pence has the inside track to Trump's VP pick.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2133:
Dan Quayle and Lloyd Bentsen Debate in 1988 -
"Senator, You're no Jack Kennedy"

In this classic video segment from the 1988 Presidential campaign season, Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX) and Senator Dan Quayle (R-IN) gave us one of the most memorable moments in American political debate history, when Quayle said he had as much experience as then Senator John "Jack" Kennedy did when he ran for President in 1960. Bentsen displays a brief eyebrow flash - a quick upward-and-back-down movement of the eyebrows with a similar contraction across the entire width of his forehead - at the 0:07 mark. In this context it is a nonverbal signal of incredulity. He was either in disbelief that Dan Quayle was claiming he was as qualified as Kennedy - or more likely he couldn't believe Quayle just tossed him a slow pitch the size of a grapefruit.

"I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator you're no Jack Kennedy." and Quayle retorts, "That was really uncalled for Senator", Quayle displays a mouth nonverbal highly indicative of anger. His lips become very thinned and are stretched horizontally in a straight line (seen during 0:24 - 0:26 and more pronounced from 0:26 - 0:28).

Dan Quayle's body language of anger in this context is expected - with the benefit hindsight and video - with the ability to pause and replay - we can see this nonverbal tell. However many times in our day-to-day lives - it is missed. There will be pleasant words spoken and yet a classic body language configuration which is contradictory - and few see it or pay it any heed. Whenever the verbal and the nonverbal are in disparity - always believe the body language.

Nonverbal Communication Application # 2012:
Mitt Romney and Vetting the V.P. ....
or an Attorney, a Physician, a C-Level Executive,
a Juror, a Suspect, etc. ...

In this "CBS This Morning" interview Charlie Rose asks GQ magazine contributing Editor Jason Zengerle, whether he believes a Nonverbal Communication/Body Language Expert should be used to as an adjunct to Mitt Romney's Vice Presidential Vetting Process. With the very personal nature of the questions asked during such a process, and the strong desire to climb the political (or corporate) ladder, there is a very strong tendency to lie. It is also very common for alpha personalities whom have reached a certain level of success to a belief that they won't get caught as well as the greater ability to, and habit of rationalizing deceit. This is particularly true for those with a greater amount of formal education. Thus an expert in nonverbal communication is a very helpful addition to the vetting process as well as any other high-risk/high-value, face-to-face truth vs. deception scenario - such as an important interview, a criminal investigation, a legal deposition or jury selection.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1600:
Senator Marco Rubio -
Sincerity, Self-directed Incredulity & Humor, Blocking and Appeals for the Vice Presidency

This is a funny and yet instructive video. In the first segment, Senator Marco Rubio says, "...three, four, five, six, seven years from now - if I do a good job as Vice President ..." The Senator then immediately realizes his mistake. At the 0:07 mark, Senator Rubio displays a classic microexpression of incredulity - showing us a glimpse into his emotional mind - for he is in disbelief at what he just said. His left forehead and left eyebrow both elevate - while the right side of Mr. Rubio's face remains unchanged. This evanescent body language lasts less than 0.5 of a second.
During the 0:07 - 0:11 segment, Senator Rubio then reaches out and touches the forearm of his interviewer. While virtually all politicians violate others' personal space and indeed touch too much - thus destroying rapport more than building it - particularly during variations of the political handshake - Rubio's touch here is one of high sincerity. The psyche (via his hand) is literally "reaching out" in an effort to try and retrieve his mistake. When people touch in a deliberate and delayed fashion however, it demonstrates that consciousness is most likely directing their actions. The Senator's gesture occurred very quickly though - and in this context it shows us his subconscious was in charge.

Marco Rubio's subconscious is honest - as is yours.

Additionally Rubio's laugh and smile are very sincere - his eyes are closed or nearly so (with the required concave-up crescent present in both lower lids) after misspeaking. Also, only Marco's upper teeth are visible - another touchstone of authenticity. His eyelids demonstrate an extended closure too - which is common after misspeaking in a public forum. In such settings, this nonverbal indicates sincere embarrassment and the emotional processing of an event.
Marco Rubio noticeably blushes as well - and of course such body language can't be feigned. The freshman Senator just won over some more constituents - for humor, particularly when sincere and self-deprecating, humanizes us all.
