Body Language and Behavior Analysis No. 4744: Kaitlan Collins asks Ted Cruz if he'll Accept the Results of the 2024 Election – Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

Two days ago, Senator Ted Cruz was asked by Kaitlyn Collins if he'll accept the results of the 2024 presidential election. What follows is a brief clip of that interview and an oft overlooked body language tell.

Specifically, Kaitlan Collins asks, "In 2024, will you certify the election results? Do you plan to object or will you accept the results regardless of who wins the election?"

Ted Cruz answers, "So Kaitlin, I gotta say, I, I think that's actually a, a ridiculous question" – Collins pushes back with, "It's a yes or no question"...

Cruz responds, "I, n, no, it's not. N, le, le, let me explain why it's a ridiculous question. It's not a question – 'ave you ever asked Democrat that?" Collin answers, "Of course."

Note Ted Cruz's double-handed gesture – with his fingers and thumbs intertwined except for the two index fingers (forefingers) flexor surfaces touching, and extended in a forward point:

This is called a "Pistol Steeple" for two reasons – not only because it physically resembles a handgun (a visual metaphor), but also because it signifies an effort to 'shoot down' the idea/logic/explanation of the other person:

Whenever a pistol steeple is used, you know the person already has their mind made up – and that they're going to vehemently oppose you/your reasoning/your answer. Their mind is not only closed, but they're on the offensive.

It's important to note that sometimes you'll see a pistol steeple being displayed, but the person isn't voicing any (or perhaps just a little) disagreement. ...

... In such cases, the pistol steeple is a sign of clandestine disagreement. You can indeed be sure that they're thinking-feeling considerable criticisms – they're just holding them back. Watch your flank!

Did you notice the contempt that Cruz displays toward Collins (on *his* left). It looks like what many people would call a 'snarl'. It's a bit difficult to see because of the angle of the camera and his facial hair, but Cruz is expressing considerable contempt here:

Notice also Cruz's multiple stutterings (Cruz is a non-stutterer), omission and truncation of words. He also immediately starts in on his explanation, but then stops, self-interrupting – asking Collins about her asking a Democrat that same question (whataboutism).

Moreover, like many manipulative people – particularly people in power – Cruz criticizes the question – turning it into an admonishment of the questioner. This is always a red flag.

Cruz and people with similar personalities will criticize you and bully you – trying to make you feel stupid – in public or in private – in an effort to get you to back down and prevent similar queries from others in the future.

SUMMARY: The Pistol Steeple shows his desire to 'shoot down' another person's opinions, inquiries, ideas, or plans and go on the offensive. Cruz not only displays these thought-feelings toward Collins, but he also displays contempt toward her.

Body Language Analysis No. 4257: Mark Zuckerberg Testifies Before The Senate - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg testified before the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of but two key moments of his five-hour testimony. Included here is a nuancing of a nonverbal signal that most casual observers would conflate - however, their meanings are profoundly different.

SENATOR CRUZ (continuing at 1:18): Well Mr. Zuckerberg, I will say there are - a great many - Americans who I think are deeply concerned that, that Facebook and other tech companies are engaged in a pervasive pattern of bias and political censorship. Ah, There have been numerous instances with Facebook ...

During 1:36, as Senator Cruz says, "... Facebook ...", Mr. Zuckerberg displays a Tight Tongue Jut. A tight tongue signals the thought emotions of:

• Disdain
• Disgust
• Repulsion

With a Tight Tongue Jut, the mouth is barely opened - but the tongue is pushed out through closed lips. It's helpful to think of this as an adult analog to an infant rejecting creamed asparagus.

Notice also his nostril flaring and tension in the region above the upper lip/below the nose (the "mustache area").

In this specific example, it's not possible to differentiate if Mr. Zuckerberg's emotions are directed at the Senator from Texas - or toward the accusations/in defense of the company he co-founded (or both).

Now on a bit further ...

SENATOR CRUZ (continuing at 2:54, over-talking): So, let me, let me, let me ask this question: Are, are you aware of any ad or page that has been taken down from Planned Parenthood?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: Senator, I, I'm not. But let me just - can I [stutter] f- finish?

SENATOR CRUZ: (over-talking) How about moveon.org?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: Sorry?

SENATOR CRUZ: How about moveon.org?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: I'm not specifically aware of those cases.

SENATOR CRUZ: (over-talking) How about any Democratic candidate for office?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: I, I'm not specifically aware. I mean I, I'm, I'm not n-, I'm not sure Ω

During 3:18 - just after Mr. Zuckerberg said, "I, I'm not specifically aware. I mean I, I'm, I'm not n-, I'm not sure" - Mark then displays a Loose Tongue Jut (notated in the dialog by the Ω symbol). A Loose Tongue Jut transmits the thought emotions of:

• "I've been bad"
• "I've been caught"
• "I've done a stupid thing" (Navarro).

Contrast this with the Tight Tongue Jut shown earlier. Note that in the Loose Tongue Jut - as the tongue protrudes out - the mouth is partially opened.

A split second later - also during 3:18 - Mr. Zuckerberg displays an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). An Inward Lip Roll is a signal of the psyche suppressing strong emotions - both from being expressed on the face - but also inwardly from growing even stronger.

What emotion you ask?

Another split-second later (still during 3:18) - we see Mark Zuckerberg's jaw jutting forward (A Jaw Jut) This is secondary to an adrenaline surge accompanying anger. Note also the wrinkling/dimpling on the anterior (front) aspect of his chin.

Body Language Analysis No. 4060: Ted Cruz's Default Facial Expression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

There are people who, rather than maintaining relatively neutral faces - default to a few expressions which they nearly constantly "wear". These are very literally "physiologic masks". Ted Cruz is one of these people.

The image above shows the Texas Senator with his most common facial default.

The three key components of Cruz's expression are:

1. Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (Elevated-CFC)
2. Elevated Inner (medial) Eyebrows
3. Partial Mouth "Smile" (an insincere smile)

It's important to stress that his mouth is configured in an insincere smile and, as it is here - nearly always suppressed.

Of course, we all make this expression occasionally when we're feeling:

1. Arrogant
2. Contempt
3. Smug Disbelief

All three of these emotions may also be manifested by other facial expressions. It's also crucial to remember that we're all allowed to feel arrogant, contemptuous, or smug incredulity - after all, we're human (But hopefully we don't feel these too often).

While ninety-six percent of us make this expression once in a while, four percent of the population displays this expression quite often.

Other than the fact we don't like others to project arrogance, contempt, or disbelief in our direction - there's another reason we are repulsed by this expression: for most of the time when the central forehead and inner eyebrows are elevated - the mouth is configured in a painful or saddened manner. But when we see a bit of a smile with an elevated central forehead - it sends out red flags. It doesn't feel right. It's alienating. But not everyone catches this warning sign.

Summary: The frequent display of this expression (elevated central forehead contraction, elevated inner eyebrows, with a partial mouth smile) is, among other things, an extremely reliable signal for chronic insincerity.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3630: Ted Cruz Refuses to Endorse Donald Trump - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night Ted Cruz spoke at the GOP Convention. He also refused to endorse Donald Trump for President and was booed in the closing moments of his speech.

This morning Cruz spoke to the Texas Delegates. He also spoke his mind and explained his reasoning for not following the party line. What follows is an excellent example of a very telling and particular nonverbal display.

Beginning at 0:28 in the video above, Cruz says, "I am not in the habit - of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father. [audience applause and booing] And that pledge was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack Heidi - that I'm goin' to nonetheless come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father."

During 0:50 as he says, "... goin' to ...", Senator Cruz begins an evanescent display of Disgust which lasts just slightly longer than a textbook microexpression (thus termed a near-microexpression).

The junior Senator from Texas continues his disgust expression as he says, "... nonetheless ...".

There were certainly other body language tells displayed here by Ted - yet this one in particular stands out. And while his verbal message matches his nonverbal behavior in this particular moment - tens or hundreds of times a day in the typical, professional or personal life - they won't. In such cases of verbal-nonverbal disparity - it's the nonverbal message which always tells the true thoughts and emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3546: Carly Fiorina's and Ted Cruz's Awkward Raised Hand Holding - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

With a bit of additional editing (making this already cringe-worthy moment seem even worse), a portion of this political faux pas is now a viral gif (see below). The above video is the original moment, however. It was captured on 27 April 2016, shortly after Ted Cruz announced his running mate in Carly Fiorina.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

Carly begins touching Cruz's left, upper arm-shoulder and slides her had down his arm. This momentarily puts her in the alpha role to Cruz's beta.

There is an inordinate amount of time spent with their hands behind Fiorina's lower back as they initiate their hand-holding. It's very noteworthy here that the corners of Ms. Fiorina's mouth are directed downward - whereas Senator Cruz's are turned upward.

A continuation of the same "arm wrestling" behind Fiorina's lower back.

Next, with their hands down low (and finally centered between them), Carly has positioned her hand in front - as this would have allowed Senator Cruz's hand to be in front once they are swung up above their heads - giving him the position of nonverbal dominance. As she is the potential VP candidate to his Presidential - such acquiescence is natural and expected

As their arm swing upward, about one-third of the way up, the Texas Senator re-adjust his hand. However, then the former HP CEO takes the position of dominance - gripping her had around Cruz's fingers. This again puts Fiorina in much more of an alpha role.

Seconds later, Ted, not wanting to continue his beta behavior - again readjusts. He continues to have a difficult time of it however - fumbling twice when their hands are full raised - finally getting his hand higher and enveloping Carly's.

This nonverbal interaction is more than just a simple fumbling of hands - rather it reveals a fundamental emotional belief of Carly Fiorina's. She does not at all believe herself to be beta to Ted Cruz.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3515: Jimmy Kimmel asks Ted Cruz, "Who Do Like Better, Obama or Trump?" Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The comedian queried the Senator a boatload of random questions. Of course, there's always a smorgasbord of body language tells in such appearances, yet one in particular is highlighted here.

Beginning at 0:38, Kimmel asks Senator Cruz, "Who do you like better, Obama or Trump?".

Subsequently, during 0:41 - 0:42, Ted Cruz displays the "Underbite Lip Roll" with a concomitant suppressed smile.

This classic but rarely discussed facial expression cluster is very characteristic for the emotions accompanying the formulation of a diplomatic and tempered answer. Whenever you see this specific nonverbal display you can be sure the answer you'll be hearing will be highly diluted and mollified.

Thus the Underbite Lip Roll is one of many facial expressions made when there's a significant disparity between what is thought-felt and what is spoken.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3511: Ted Cruz Statement Regarding Allegations of Extramarital Affairs - Body Language and Statement Analysis (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Recently The National Enquirer published a story alleging Ted Cruz has had a series of extramarital affairs and named different five women. While campaigning in Wisconsin last Friday, Ted Cruz conducted a press conference addressing these allegations. A shortened video excerpt of this statement can be seen above and a partial transcript follows (A more complete video of Sen. Cruz's statement is included below).

"The next day, the National Enquirer published a story. It is a story that quoted one source on the record - Roger Stone, Donald Trump’s chief political advisor. Let me be clear, this National Enquirer story is garbage. It is complete and utter lies. It is a tabloid smear. And it is a smear that has come from Donald Trump and his henchmen. It is attacking my family, and what is striking - is Donald’s henchman, Roger Stone - had for months - been foreshadowing that this attack was coming. It’s not surprising that Donald Trump’s tweet occurs the day before the attack comes out. And I would note that Mr. Stone - is a man who has 50 years of dirty tricks behind him. He’s a man for whom - a term was coined - for copulating with a rodent. Well let me be clear: Donald Trump may be a rat, but I have no desire to copulate with him. And this garbage does not belong in politics.

And the venue for this for this attack is not surprising - the National Inquirer. The CEO of The National Enquirer is an individual named David Pecker. Well David is good friends with Donald Trump. They have a friendship that goes back for many years - in fact, The National Enquirer has endorsed Donald Trump - has said he must be President. And so Donald, when he’s losing, when he’s scared, when Republicans are uniting against him - decides - to peddle sleaze and slime. You know, Donald is fond of giving people nicknames. With this pattern, he should not be surprised to see people calling him, 'Sleazy Donald'. Because that is his first and last resort - is to go to sleaze - and ignore the truth."

From a statement analysis standpoint there are several key points which point to deception. Note that Senator Cruz never states definitively, "No - I did not cheat on my wife" or "No - I never had an extramarital affair". Instead he implies it - e.g.,  "this National Enquirer story is garbage" or "It is a tabloid smear" or "It is attacking my family". This lack of a clear and plain statement of, "No" immediately followed by, "I have never had an extramarital affair" (or something very similar) - strongly suggests he is not telling the truth.

Another very telling statement analysis observation here is the dramatically disproportionate amount of words/sentences/time Senator Cruz spends on attacking his accusers compared with denying his guilt. This strikingly asymmetrical attacking-to-denying ratio is highly correlative with deception (Houston).

What is extremely bizarre, and to date has been barely addressed by anyone - is when Senator Cruz says, "He’s a man for whom - a term was coined - for copulating with a rodent. Well let me be clear: Donald Trump may be a rat, but I have no desire to copulate with him." Here Cruz is using a combination sexual metaphor-sexual literal, with his accuser to refute alleged sexual acts. He also further confuses Roger Stone with Donald Trump. One could search many a year and never find a paragraph so very Freudian.

If a journalist were to simply ask Senator Cruz clearly and succinctly, "Senator Cruz, for the record, have you ever cheated on your wife?" - we are likely to get, if only for a few seconds, a very different Ted Cruz.

Did you notice Senator Cruz has an aversion toward using contractions in this press conference? This tendency too points to deception.

Notice also Ted Cruz's vocal quality (paralanguage) - it has the same staccato, hyper-comma, measured, debate-style quality we're used to seeing - and which has served him very well during debates. In other words, Ted Cruz possesses vocal characteristics which have very little variation. Yet it's not the tone of voice used by a person who is either angry (and holding back a portion of their anger) or someone who is defending their honor. It's the same Ted Cruz we always hear. Every politician is certainly entitled to "sound like a politician" - but NOT when they're defending their honor. This does not sound sincere, it sounds political - it sounds acted. It is insincere.

From a body language standpoint, Ted Cruz's nonverbal vocabulary is also very repetitive. The same scant number of facial expressions and a small variety of repetitive hand-arm gestures also speak to a quite "limited nonverbal vocabulary". In fact if you mute the sound and watch his press conference, you will no variation from his nonverbal behavior in any other press conference. With such a profound accusation, this "same old style" is a red flag.

A person who is skilled at deception very often exhibits very little vocal variation as well as a limited body language vocabulary. In short - it makes it much easier to deceive with a limit repertoire.

It can't be emphasized enough, that whenever one is assessing for truths or lies, always determine if the vocal qualities, the verbal language and the nonverbal language are congruent. If this triad is in unison then there is a very high probability that you're the beneficiary of honesty. If any one of these is dispirit - take heed. You've been warned.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3510: Lindsey Graham - The Senator Picks His Poison: Ted Cruz vs. Donald Trump - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Lindsey Graham's recent appearance on The Daily Show was both politically informative and hilarious. The South Carolina Senator candidly discusses with Trevor Noah his reasoning for endorsing Ted Cruz over Donald Trump. Yet this interview also serves as a source of examples for a multitude of nonverbal displays - four of which are discussed below.

Just after Senator Graham says, "It tells you everything you need to know about Donald Trump [nervous laughter]", Graham examples a classic Tongue in Cheek display (1:45 - 1:46).

The tongue in cheek nonverbal has several meanings depending on the other body language signals with which it is clustered. Here it signifies the sentiment of "I just won" or "Gotcha".

A few seconds later during 1:51, Graham leaks a Mouth of Fear expression as he says, "I don't dislike Ted ...".

This microexpression of fear betrays the Senator's cognitive/emotional dissonance by his act of endorsing a man who he believes is the lesser of two bad choices. It's profoundly important to note that even though Senator Graham makes this obvious by his words, his body language is also fully congruent.

During 1:53 - 1:54, Graham contracts and elevates his forehead muscles while simultaneous his eyelids are taught and closed as he says, "... Ted and I have a lot of differences ...". Moreover, while his eyelids are closed you will note that his eyes (globes) rapidly roll up and down. This dynamic can be visualized easily through his closed eyelids. This is a highly reliable sign of contempt that is commonly missed or glossed over.

"... and if Donald Trump carries the banner of my party, I think it taints conservatism for generations to come. I think his campaign is opportunistic, race bating, religious bigotry, xenophobia - other than that he'd be a good nominee."

During 2:48 - 2:49, we see Graham leaning his torso quickly sideways to his left and rapidly snap his head laterally as well. This display is a form of the Self-Righteous Head Wiggle. It is made by relatively high alpha personalities during moments of extra-high confidence and can be thought of as one type of nonverbal swagger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3503: John Kasich interview regarding Republican Convention - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

John Kasich was a guest today on CNN's State of the Union. At 3:40 in the video above, Ms. Dana Bash asks [over-talking], "So just to, just to put a button on this, ah Governor, there are no conversations, you're not interested in any conversations to coordinate with Ted Cruz since there's only three people in the race to try to keep the guy who's got -

Kasich: [over-talking] Look ...

Bash: ... by far the most delegates - Donald Trump, from getting even more?

This image was captured during 3:51. From 3:48 through 3:52, Kasich extends his torso backward to his left, moves laterally (back and forth), as he says, "Look" - and then resumes his more straightened, relatively still posture.

This (backward) torso extension (with or without the additional side-to-side movement) is a nonverbal signal highly indicative of frustration.

At 3:53, before Governor Kasich answers Ms. Bash, we see him display the cluster of: thinned, horizontally configured lips (particularly his upper lip), a clenched jaw, a dimpled chin, protruding lower lip, flared nostrils, lower eyelid tension, tension in mustache area, cheek dimpling - a nonverbal combination which indicates an amalgam of anger, disgust, frustration and impatience.

In summary, John Kasich has a high sincerity quotient (and thus also is believable and likable). Specifically, he has every intention of attending the GOP Convention in July in Cleveland as a candidate. He also believes his chances are relatively good at emerging as the Republican Nominee for President. The Governor however, during this interview, is also displaying relatively high levels of anger, frustration, disgust and impatience.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3476: Is Ted Cruz worried about a Donald Trump Lawsuit? - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Question: Is Ted Cruz worried about a lawsuit from Donald Trump? Answer: Yes. Probably not one challenging the ad which he's referencing here - but another - e.g., Trump challenging Cruz's birth status and whether or not Cruz is, from a Constitutional point-of-view, a "natural born citizen".

Note that throughout most of this video, Cruz speaks with his hands in his front pockets. Although his hands cannot be visualized directly here, their positions can be easily discerned by the dynamics of his arm positions/movements. Many people will confuse this particular MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) as one associated with smug confidence - but it's not. Any time a person says their not afraid of something, challenging someone, says their looking forward to xyz - and then they put their hands in their pockets (or doesn't/rarely takes them out of their pockets) - they are afraid/lying. A sudden cessation of hand/arm illustrators is highly correlative with deception. This is particularly noteworthy with Mr. Cruz, because he does have a particular set of hand/arm illustrators to which he frequently defaults - yet here his psyche gives us glimpse inside.

Slicing it thinner: At 0:35 just as Ted Cruz puts his right hand (his dominant hand) back into his pocket (it had been in earlier and his left was in its respective pocket) - the junior senator from Texas displays a regret expression (see image below).

0:35 Regret Expression as Senator Cruz puts his second (dominant) hand into his pocket just after he says, "One of the things I look forward to most of all ..."

0:36

A second later as he says, " .... is deposing Donald Trump" - Cruz's face displays an expression of incredulity (right eyebrow raised, right forehead contracted and elevated - yet it's relaxed on his left side). Ted Cruz uses this expression during a declarative statement. Thus his body language is contradicting his verbal language. Anytime these two are incongruous - it's the body language which tells the true emotions. Ted Cruz has a disbelief of his own statement.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3468: GOP Debate, Antonin Scalia, John Dickerson and Ted Cruz on Supreme Court History - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night during the Republican Debate in Greenville, South Carolina, there was a moment of disagreement between Senator Ted Cruz and the debate moderator, John Dickerson. regarding Supreme Court appointments by presidents in the last year of their final term. This subject was brought to light because of the death of Associate Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia announced earlier in the day. This segment exemplified a particular nonverbal illustrator, which in this example, is fairly subtle. As you study body language in increasing detail, you will be well-served to notice these subtle tells - for it's these signals which will give you a profound advantage.

Here is a partial transcript of the above video segment of the debate as well as a partial nonverbal analysis:

CRUZ: Well, we have eighty years of precedent of not confirming Supreme Court justices in an election year. And, and lemme say Justice Scalia

DICKERSON: Just, I’m sorry to interrupt, were nomina -, ah, ah, appointed in an election year? - or is that just there were eighty years happening —

CRUZ: Eighty years of, of not confirming. For example, L.B.J., nominated Abe Fortas. Fortas did, did not get confirmed. He was defeated.

DICKERSON: But Kennedy was confirmed in ‘88.

CRUZ: [Long pause, inhaling, then further pausing] At, No — Kennedy was confirmed in eigh, -‘87.

DICKERSON: He was, he was appoin -, he was appointed in ‘87, confirming -.

CRUZ [Over-talking] He, he was appointed in '88—

DICKERSON: That’s the question, is it appointing or confirming, what's the difference?

CRUZ: In, in this case it’s both. But if I could, could answer it [inaudible]—

DICKERSON: Sorry, I want to get the facts straight for the audience. I apologize. [Audience Booing].

This image was captured during 0:27, just as the Senator from Texas is beginning to say, "... And, and lemme say Justice Scalia ..."

During his preface we can see very good yet subtle example of a what is termed a "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" (SRHW). The video must be watched to appreciate the dynamics of this display.

A Self-Righteous head wiggle is characterized by a relatively rapid side-to-side head movement - and often includes other body parts such as the torso and the jaw. Here its duration is about a second, so it's classified as a near-microexpression. As mentioned, this example is relatively subtle as well. At other times a SRHW will be displayed for longer periods and with considerably more amplitude. The SRHW is always expressed by those individuals who are relative alpha personalities - and particularly during times of strong opinions and extra high confidence.

Often times, when more extreme, many will describe a feeling of deliberate smugness is being transmitted. Think of the SRHW as a form of nonverbal swagger.

It's also very important to note, Sen. Cruz's prolonged blinking as well as his elevated central forehead contraction (CFC), his elevated inner eyebrows, together with a partial mouth smile. These all constitute a nonverbal cluster which acts as an amplifier to the SRHW - increasing its potency.

What other body language clusters often accompany the self-righteous head wiggle?
