Body Language Analysis No. 4293: Why is Harvey Weinstein Smiling? - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Friday morning, Harvey Weinstein turned himself into the New York City Police. He was subsequently arrested and charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct. These allegations involve two women in separate events. Weinstein's bond was set at $10 Millon and he was released on $1 Million cash bail. He was fitted with a GPS tracking device which limits his travel to New York and Connecticut. The judge also imposed a temporary protective order against Weinstein requiring him to stay away from these two women. At least 80 women have allegations of sexual abuse against the former film producer.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Harvey Weinstein as he exited New York City's 1st Precinct in handcuffs.

In this moment, Harvey Weinstein is displaying a Sincere Smile (Duchenne Smile) including:

• Partially Closed Eyelids
• Concave-up Furrows in Both Lower Eyelids
• Mouth Smile with only the upper Teeth Visible
• Upward Vectored Cheek Muscles

What are some possible reasons why any person would ever smile in such a scenario?

• Harvey Weinstein's experiencing a Psychotic Break
• He feels he knows something which we don't - and he believes this will give him a significant advantage (Thus a possible example of the phenomenon of Duping Delight)
• He's under the influence of significant amounts of Drugs or Alcohol
• He's Suicidal

SUMMARY: This is a profound example of Smiling Out of Context. Any time you see someone behaving in a manner so disparate from how the vast majority of people would normally behave - particularly jovially - and especially in such a serious circumstance - stop and re-evaluate the situation. Don't brush-off this behavior. If you haven't identified the specific reason, then you're absolutely missing something crucial.

Body Language Analysis No. 4093: Fear and Harvey Weinstein - Emma Watson's Reaction - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Accusations of sexual harassment, assault, and rape continue to accumulate against Harvey Weinstein. Although not currently associated with these allegations, this particular incident is quite telling. The image was captured in 2011, as then 20-year-old Emma Watson was grabbed from behind by Harvey Weinstein as they exited a BAFTA event in London. That evening they were among those at a gathering honoring the film, The Kings Speech.

Purportedly Mr. Weinstein was "escorting" Ms. Watson to their waiting car and he was "protecting" her from fans/onlookers.

SUMMARY: From a nonverbal perspective, this photo captures a moment of fear on Emma Watson's face. Her eyes (eyelids) are opened much wider than baseline. This is a physiologic response to a fear-associated adrenaline surge.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3584: Brock Turner's Mugshot, Duping Delight and Body Language (PHOTO)

This is Brock Turner's Mugshot - taken the night of his arrest. Glance at it for split second - what is your knee-jerk impression of the emotion you believe Turner is feeling? Don't think about it - just blurt it out.

Brock Turner was convicted of three sexual assault charges - although the former Stanford Swimming star was initially charged with five felonies: one count of raping an unconscious person, one count of raping an intoxicated person, two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object and one count of assault while attempting to commit rape.

Despite these three felony convictions and a possibility of up to fourteen years in prison, Judge Aaron Persky gave Turner a sentence of only six months - and this will perhaps be shorter if Turner exhibits "good behavior".

Brock Turner's father, Dan Turner, wrote a letter to the court in which he said, "That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life." His letter has drawn World Wide outrage.

Now look more carefully at this mugshot. What do you see? This is not a neutral facial expression. There is no sadness (although his conjunctiva [the whites of the eyes] are red, we cannot say the cause). There is no anger. There is no fear. There is, however, a very subtle smile. This is an example of a rudimentary nonverbal expression - what is termed, "Duping Delight"(Ekman), (some may call this a bit of a "Cheshire Cat smile" or a "Shit Eating Grin"). Brock Turner is having trouble suppressing, what for him is a form of joy (albeit a sick joy). Turner knows in this moment that he will not face the full force of the law. He knows that he has a significant advantage in the legal system. He's confident in this - and it's giving him a diabolical joy.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3582: Brock Turner's Dad Draws Outrage of "20 Minutes of Action" - Lack of Empathy and No Remorse - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This is Brock Turner and his father Dan Turner. Brock Turner was Stanford University student and swimmer who raped an incapacitated, intoxicated, fully unconscious woman behind a dumpster on January 18, 2015. Two men caught him in the act and chased him down. They held him there until the police arrived.

Brock Turner was convicted of three sexual assault charges although he was initially charged with five different felonies: one count of raping an intoxicated person, one count of raping an unconscious person, one count of assault while attempting to commit rape as well as two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object.

The maximum sentence he could have received was 14 years. Prosecutors recommended that he receive a six-year prison sentence - however Judge Aaron Persky gave him a 6 month sentence after saying, "A [longer] prison sentence would have a severe impact on him" and that "I think he will not be a danger to others".

In a letter to the Court, Dan Turner said his son Brock, “has never been violent to anyone including his actions on the night of January 17th 2015,” as well as, "That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life."

In the image above we can see the younger Turner with his eyelids opened wider than baseline, nostrils flared, his lips slightly pursed, his mid-face tightened - indicative of fear. And although this is a still image, the blurriness of his Adam's apple suggests movement and a hard swallow consistent with fear's dry mouth and throat.

Dan Turner has his head and neck rotated towards his son with his right eyebrow and forehead raised while his left brow and forehead are lowered. This nonverbal cluster indicates disbelief and incredulity.

Neither man in this image displays any nonverbal signs of empathy or remorse.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2933: Will Hayden ("Sons of Guns") Arrested - Body Language of His Mug Shot (PHOTO)

William Hayden, the star of Discovery Channel's "Sons of Guns" was arrested on Tuesday 26 August 2014. He has been charged with aggravated rape of a 12 year-old girl. Hayden is being held on a $250,000 bond. Earlier this month (9 August) he was arrested and charged with child molestation and crimes against nature and later released on $150,000 bail. These allegations are sickening beyond words.

The body language displayed in Hayden's "mug shot" (above) is significant in several ways. Although the camera angle is oblique and directed upwards, he is exhibiting mild facial asymmetry consistent with contempt. This particular angle makes his left nostril seem more dilated than it is - and thus makes a complete nonverbal evaluation somewhat difficult. Yet his left nostril is still more flared than his right side. This detail is betrayed by the slight elevation of his left upper lip along with a subtle upward contraction of his left cheek (and an asymmetrical eyelid closure) as well as a relatively greater deepening on his left of the furrow running from just above the nostril to lateral to the corner of the mouth (nasolabial fold). This cluster of findings results in a mild "snarl" appearance and indicates the emotion of contempt.

Another finding of particular note is the partial bilateral closure of his eyelids (slight more on his left). This is notable because of the tightening of his lower eyelids (along with the lack of lower eyelid, concave-up furrows). It's a contempt amplifier and also is an important nonverbal signal which accompanies anger.

His eyebrows are also lowered - further indicating the emotion of anger.

The absence of the lateral portion of each eyebrow suggests the possibility of hypothyroidism (very easy to medically test for), Trichotillomania (of which he has no other physical signs but is possible) - or the deliberate removal of this portion of his eyebrows (either by shaving or laser). Some people (primarily men) have been known to remove the outer eyebrows in an effort to deliberately give a more angry and ominous appearance.

We all occasionally feel and thus display emotions contempt and disgust. Yet those who chronically show nonverbal signs of these emotions have a significantly higher tendency towards violence. Thus the recognition of these and other body language signs are extremely valuable in the prevention of sexual assault and as well as overall threat assessment tools. Do not ignore them.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2260:
'Top Chef' host Padma Lakshmi regarding
New Delhi's recent gang-rape,
Indian Culture and Sexual-Physical Harassment -
Body Language Nuance

Top Chef host, the beautiful Padma Lakshmi recently spoke out regarding the gang rape of an Indian woman in New Delhi. Time for some body language nuance ....

At the 0:02 second mark in this video (and at multiple other times in this short excerpt of a longer interview), she mentions "...it disgusted me", however the classic nonverbal expression of disgust was not expressed on her face at this time. Was she lying? No. First Padma was recounting what she had initially felt/thought upon hearing about the rape. Secondly, although her words said "disgusted", a more general negative emotion (which included many emotions) was conveyed in her body language - that of emotional blocking & emotional processing. For also at the 0:02 mark she displays a prolonged eyelid closure which together in this nonverbal cluster-context is her psyche attempting to block the "memory" of the event from her perspective (exhibition of high empathy) - her hearing about it, recalling her memories of harassment as a youth (which she recounts a few seconds later) when she had lived in India and the empathy she felt/feels for the victim/other similar victims. Ms. Lakshmi's simultaneous head/neck thrust forward as she said "disgusted" and exhibited this prolonged eyelid closure is an example of an illustrator which serves to add emphasis and is also part of this body language cluster

Not all prolonged eyelid closure indicates empathy and/or blocking unpleasant memories. Can you tell the difference?

There are several other nonverbal great examples included in this video as well. Freeze frame at both 0:04 very end - at 0:52 and you'll see her eyelids open wider than normal with some mid-face tightening as well as some subtle mouth configuration of fear This body language-facial expression is a display of fear. At this moment she is reliving a memory and re-experiencing a portion of that fear.

Padma Lakshmi certainly has quite high Sincerity & Empathy Coefficients. She has spent a good deal of time reliving unpleasant memories and to a degree, putting herself in the shoes of the New Delhi gang-rape victim.
