Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3798: Elle Fanning, Channing Tatum and Dialing Up the Alpha - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Elle Fanning was recently a guest on The Tonight Show. In the telling of her story of her encounter with Channing Tatum at a Beyoncé concert, Ms. Fanning repeatedly displayed a particularly common, although rarely understood nonverbal behavior - known as "Hair Adjust Behind the Ear" - aka HABE.

Adjusting the hair behind one's ear is very commonly dismissed as "habit" or tic-like behavior (which it may well be, to some degree). Body language novices may describe it as a "preening behavior". And while it does, in a general sense, fit within the category of preening, it has a much more precise meaning.

A HABE also fits into a class of behaviors termed "MAPs" (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) - in short, these are a variety of self-touching body language displays . When a HABE is used, it indicates level of anxiety (a common occasion is within the sub-context of embarrassment, as Ms. Fanning is experiencing) - but even more specifically, it shows that a person both recognizes and feels the need to be more assertive and thus "Up-Regulate" their alpha qualities (e.g., "I need to step it up"). This is often referred to as "Dialing Up One's Alpha".

You may note that the Hair Adjust Behind the Ear behavior is more common in women - yet this is only because of the current social tendency for women to have longer hair (it is used by shorter-haired women as well as men too, just not as frequently). And while of course, longer hair does occasionally need to be moved out one's way - it occurs much frequently when assertiveness is necessary.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3709: Kate Middleton - The face you make when you’re married to a prince but you meet Justin Trudeau - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Some on social media have cleverly captioned this picture, "The face you make when you’re married to a prince but you meet Justin Trudeau".

Kate Middleton's body language speaks volumes. When we thin-slicing her nonverbal signals we see:

1. Her smile is sincere
2. Her face is blushing
3. She's performing (initiating) a HABE gesture (Hair Adjustment Behind Ear)
4. Her head and neck are flexed forward - as well as side-tilted toward the Canadian Prime Minister
5. She's locked in eye contact with Justin Trudeau

Despite standing next to Prince William, Kate's body language cluster in this moment is strongly indicative of her sincere attraction for Justin. Of course, like the rest of us, she's only human - and also, like the rest of us, simply being physically attracted to another person does not at all mean she will act on this feeling. Yet there's no denying she finds Mr. Trudeau alluring.

The next time you're in Justin Trudeau's shoes - and on the receiving end of similar nonverbal behavior - you can be assured your onlooker finds you sexually attractive. And while, as we see here, it may be quite innocent - it may also just as likely be quite flirtatious.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3618: Salma Hayek regarding Donald Trump - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It turns out Donald Trump and Salma Hayek know each other. Ms. Hayek was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this year and the exchange in the video above provides some excellent body language teaching examples. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

Kimmel (beginning at 0:12): "Have you sp- (stutter) have you ever spoken to him?"
Hayek: "Yes, yes, I've known him for a long time."

This body language display is known as a "Hair Adjustment Behind the Ear" (HABE). It's seen more commonly manifested with women and gay men - and even though it's seen a bit more commonly in those with longer hair, it's also a frequent nonverbal in those with short hair. This is a signal of the psyche actively up-regulating its alpha status - as if to say, "I am going to need to be more assertive now."

Kimmel (beginning at 0:16): "Oh you have!"
Hayek: "Yeah, yeah."

As she says, "Yeah, yeah" - Salma has a classic Disgust expression on her face (above).

Hayek (beginning at 0:44): "I, You know, I don't think - he listens to - to me. No."
Kimmel: "You don't think he would listen to you, yeah."
Hayek: "No. It's - you don't need to talk sense into him. Everyone's entitled to their own madness - You need to talk sense into the people who are not seeing the madness."
[Audience: laughter, clapping, whooping]
Kimmel: "He can use a little of it too while we're at it."
Hayek: "It won't make any difference that way."

During the end of this exchange, as Salma says, "any difference that way" - note that her central forehead is contracted and elevated (Elevated CFC). When this forehead configuration is seen in conjunction with any semblance of a "Mouth Smile" - this combination dictates one of three thought-emotions (depending on the other nonverbals with which it's clustered). It's important to point out that such a smile is NEVER a sincere one of Joy-Happiness (Duchenne Smile). In this context, this mouth smile + CFC is indicative of incredulity. Ms. Hayek is transmitting a strong disbelief that talking sense into Donald Trump would be possible.

Anna Faris was recently a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live. During her appearance she spoke with significant trepidation regarding her son's costume for Halloween. The three year-old got to pick his costume this year and he chose a T-Rex. This of course is not surprising for most young boys except for one thing. Faris' husband and the boy's father is Chris Pratt - who was the male lead in the recent Jurassic World film. Faris fears some may see her son's costume as her and her husband's attempt at using their child's trick-or-treat experience as a marketing ploy.

This is indicative of lower levels of fear and social fear rather than true physical fear. People who display this combination of nonverbal signals tend to have significantly higher empathy quotients.

Commonly displayed when a person is trying to win another person to their way of thinking - and attempting to get others to  co-rationalize and see their point-of-view.

Bilateral Hair Adjust with fear mouth. This is a truncated variation of the Hair Adjust Behind Ears. In this shortened version, Faris' fingers do not extend to the back of her ears. Her psyche is attempting to be more assertive - yet (together with another fear display of the face - primarily her mouth), Anna Faris's is not feeling very confident about the ramifications of her son's costume choice.  Intriguingly, when (in other scenarios) the fingers move the hair around to the backs of the ear(s) - the remainder of the facial expression and body language signals - and the emotional mind are all much more confident.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2921: Eve Hewson (Bono's Daughter) Recounts Phone Pranking Justin Timberlake (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Eve Hewson is an actor. She also is Bono's daughter. In this recent appearance on The Tonight Show, she recounts to Jimmy Fallon how she and a friend got onto her father's computer and lifted a bunch of phone numbers - including Justin Timberlake's .... and .... (Well just watch the video).

Although she is an actor, Ms. Hewson displays significant anxiety during this interview. A partial analysis of her nonverbal indicators of nervousness are described below. All of these examples are MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) - with the exception of ring twist - which is a map-surrogate.

At multiple times, Eve displayed an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). The inward lip roll is a signal that the psyche is trying to suppress the inward build-up as well as the outward display of emotion.

The Hair Adjust Behind the Ear (HABE) is a sign of the attempt at an up-regulation of alpha qualities. This body language is seen when there is an increased need for assertiveness.

Ms. Hewson is seen rubbing her thighs throughout a large portion of this video. A thigh rub is usually a general anxiety indicator (what are some exceptions?).

Hair stroking in this context (in distinction to the HABE) is a general anxiety indicator.










 

Twisting a ring is also a general anxiety indicator - although it has significantly greater specificity when it's the wedding ring. It also is important to make a distinction between twisting the ring vs. sliding it up and down along the length of the finger. Is there another nuance in this moment as well?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2823: Kendall Jenner, 5 Seconds of Summer & One Direction at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards - Anxiety Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Kendall Jenner pulled a John Travolta last night at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. She confused two boy-bands - the up-and-comers from Australia, "5 Seconds of Summer" (5SOS) with "One Direction". This is somewhat surprising as she used to date Harry Styles.

At 0:26 a subtle yet significant "Tongue Jut" is seen (more clearly visualized in video) - which in this nonverbal cluster-context indicates a self-deprecating "I just messed up" emotional mindset.

Depending on the other body language with which it is clustered the tongue jut can indicate what other thought-emotions?

During the 0:27 - 0:28 segment, Kendall Jenner commits a rapid "False Bow" or "Bow-Retreat" correlative with embarrassment (she also continues to blush) and is a form of one of many "Blocking Behaviors". It is helpful to think of this as a "temporary retreat" - similar to a turtle going in her shell - in order to partially collect one's emotions.

And although of low-resolution due to her rapid movement, a fear mouth can also be seen in this image.

Kendall's first Hair Adjust Behind Ear (HABE) nonverbal is seen at 0:28 as she is exiting from her bow-retreat is a body language MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicating Ms. Jenner's psyche is attempting to "Dialing up Her Alpha" - essentially saying, "I need to be more assertive".

A second, cross-body HABE (0:29 - 0:30) indicating a need for further climbing out of her beta abyss.










 

At the 0:32 mark (and again about 0.5 second later), Ms. Jenner displays an "Eyebrow Flash" - and in this nonverbal cluster-context signals, "What the #$%&@?" - which is of course directed at those operating the teleprompter.




 

During 0:32 - 0:34, an essentially one & one-half arm self-hug with continued blushing indicates a significant increase of her beta behavior, a lowered degree of confidence and drop in emotional comfort.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2545: Michelle Rodriguez at Comic-Con 2013, Mirroring and Dialing Up Her Alpha (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this 2013 Comic Con interview, host Sandra Gonzalez displays a "Hair Adjust Behind the Ear" (at 0:22) with her right hand. Less than a second later, Michelle Rodriguez begins an identical gesture with her left hand. Intriguingly this same mirroring occurs later in the video at 0:53 and 0:55 (although Ms. Gonzalez's is not fully visualized). This "Mirroring" is a common nonverbal phenomenon and although it can be initiated consciously, 99.9+% of the time it is initiated subconsciously.

Mirroring can indicate a significant level of rapport or is when it is being sought. It can also be indicator of sexual attraction. When performed deliberately care must be taken to not mirror too exactly in time or preciseness of body language - lest others will recognize this act and it will backfire and quickly destroy rapport.

The "Hair Adjust Behind the Ear" (HABE) fits into a general class of nonverbals known as MAPs (Manipulator, Adaptor, or Pacifier) and this one has a highly specific meaning. Few would argue that Michelle Rodriguez is an alpha female (a' la Machete Kills, The Fast and the Furious, Avatar ...). The accomplished actor also plays those roles on the big screen. Yet even dominant females occasionally will feel the need to "dial up their alpha".  The HABE signals that in that moment their psyche is attempting to be more assertive. It feels the need to be less beta and more alpha. The HABE is seen with much more commonly in women and men with longer hair.

At 0:17 - 0:18, Michelle Rodriguez's mouth configures into what is known as a lateral lip purse. Do you know what this nonverbal sign indicates? What is Michelle thinking?

Jill Kelley, a Tampa Socialite, is shown here in this image exampling an extremely common nonverbal signal - the "Hair Adjust Behind Ear" (HABE). In general any manipulators, adaptors or pacifiers (MAPs) are signals of anxiety. While this is true here (who wouldn't be with a sudden thrust into a World-wide spot light?), more specifically the HABE is a call to action for the psyche to "dial up" the alpha qualities. Whether a person is a dominant leader, a demure wall flower or anywhere in between - when displayed this body language is reflective that the emotional mind trying to be more assertive and increase its level of confidence. The hair adjust behind the ear can be seen in male or female at any age, however it is much more common in females and gay men.

Obviously, there are certainly times when women or men with long hair wish their hair to be out of their face and thus will arrange their hair accordingly. However, the vast majority of times when this body language is seen - the emotional brain is in the midst of  up-regulating alpha characteristics.

Jill Kelley has reportedly exchanged "twenty to thirty thousand emails" with General John Allen, who is currently top commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and is nominated to be NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. It is also alleged that Ms. Kelley received threatening emails from Paula Broadwell who was having an extra-marital affair with CIA Chief and former Four Star General, David Petraeus. Furthermore it is reported that Paula Broadwell, via email, anonymously warned Allen of Kelley, characterizing Ms. Kelley as a "seductress".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2177: "I'm Tired of Bronco Bamma and Mitt Romney" - We're all Abigael Evans Dialing up her Alpha

We're all Abigael Evans. We're all sick of campaign commercials. Abigael was listening to NPR in the car just before her mom captured this video (already over 7,500,000 hits on YouTube). There is a teachable body language moment here as well. Note during the 0:14 - 0:16 segment she displays a classic "Hair Adjust Behind Ear" (HABE) nonverbal. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is a strong indicator of anxiety - which although extremely obvious here - it is very commonly seen in adults who are not crying and show no other signals of anxiety. Moreover when you see the HABE, it's an indication that the psyche is trying to be more assertive and increase the alpha qualities - while dialing down the beta qualities. Of course we can easily put this in context here - a four-year old whose mother is comforting her and who is trying to stop crying.

The HABE is seen more often in women and gay men (and although straight men may exhibit it too - there are more common male HABE analogs). Its display gives you a glimpse of the relative emotional tone of that moment and is extremely valuable in the board room, court room, a deposition, law enforcement, negotiation or sales scenario.

When a guy adjusts his cuffs or straightens his watch, it is the male analog of the more feminine nonverbal of the "Hair Adjust Behind the Ear" (HABE). Timothy Geithner, the U.S. Secretary of Treasury, is certainly an alpha male - but from time to time, even alphas need to dial it up a notch. The cuff or watch adjust is a body language signal showing that, in the moment, the psyche is attempting to be more assertive. The emotional tone is one of "assertive-anxiety".  Of course, the shirt cuff and a watch occasionally need adjusting, but the vast majority of time when men perform these gestures - they feel the need to be a less beta and a little more alpha. Certainly beta males will exhibit this and other "up-shifting" nonverbal behaviors more than alphas. It's not a measure of the person's overall personality, rather what the emotional brain is feeling in that moment.

Negotiation Body Language Secret # 345: Dialing Up Her Alpha

This is an image of Ms. Sharon Bialek immediately after her press conference two days ago when she accused Republican Presidential Nominee Hopeful, Herman Cain of unwanted sexual advances - which she alleges occurred in 1997. This particular hair-adjust-behind-the-ear gesture (HABE) is extremely common. It belongs to a set of behaviors known in the Body Language world as a Manipulators, Adaptors or Pacifiers (MAPs). These terms are synonyms and in general, are types of self-touching. They are indicative of increased anxiety at the particular moment of and immediately preceding their display. The hair-adjust-behind-the-ear is seen almost exclusively with women and gay men although straight men will occasionally exhibit it. Specifically, when you see the HABE maneuver, the subconscious is calling on the psyche to "dial-up" the Alpha personality qualities (e.g. Less Beta and more Alpha). The emotional mind is trying to be more assertive. This is a fantastic and very consistent signal telling you the person perceives themselves at a disadvantage, less confident, and out of their element. While MAPs do not indicate deception, their frequency increases at times of deception - especially hand-to-face MAPs. Never self-touch, particularly your face when speaking. Interestingly, audience members will perceive speakers as less credible when they commit MAPs. The HABE has several more stereotypical male analogs. Would you recognize any of these masculine displays?
