Body Language Analysis No. 4141: Vladimir Putin and Michael Flynn in Moscow (Part II) - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

This photo was taken in Moscow in December of 2015. The event was a dinner honoring the 10th anniversary of the Russian news agency RT (Russia Today).

You probably recognize are the two men shaking hands - Vladimir Putin and Michael Flynn. The recently retired US thee star general was paid at least $45,000 to speak at this event - although he did not seek security clearance from the Defense Department or the US State Department as was required. Flynn also failed to include a record of the payment in his reapplication for security clearance in February 2016. Several US officials report being startled by the fact he was at the same table as the Russian President - seated immediately to Putin's right.

Note that Flynn's entire body - his feet, hips, torso, and head - are directly pointing toward Putin. Not surprisingly this nonverbal dynamic is termed, "(Full) Body Pointing". In the context of a handshake, full body pointing is proper form - as it demonstrates respect and being fully present in the moment.

Unfortunately, due to the low resolution and the angle of the photographer - we cannot discern either man's degree of eye contact.

Flynn is slightly "stepping into" the handshake - leading with his left foot by 8 - 10 inches.

A split second prior to making contact in this moment, both of their hands are oriented relatively parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the floor.

In contrast, although we cannot see the direction of his feet, President Putin is not body pointing in Flynn's direction at all. Rather he's oriented at approximately 45 degrees away from the American. Normally during those handshakes when a one person is pointing away from the other person with their feet or hips - their upper torso will rotate compensate along with their neck and head, completing the rotation. It's profoundly important here that Vladimir Putin is not turning his body at all - except, probably his eyes.

We don't body point or look directly at another person who we don't like, respect, or trust. This is particularly true with a handshake.

Summary: During the time of this photo, the US and Russia were on semi-hostile terms. Michael Flynn's handshake demonstrates respect for President Putin - however, Putin shows disrespect, dislike, and/or distrust Flynn.

Contrast Putin's subconscious nonverbal behavior (disrespect toward Flynn) - with the very deliberate (conscious) decision to seat Flynn in the chair of honor - immediately to Putin's right. Whenever such behaviors are in contrast - it's the subconscious actions (Putin's body language) which tell the true thought-feelings.

Body Language Analysis No. 4140: Michael Flynn Pleads Guilty - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn - a former three-star general - pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI today. This means that Robert Mueller's team has evidence of Flynn committing other crimes. It also indicates that others members of the Trump Administration have their futures' in jeopardy.

Many sources now report that Jared Kushner was one "very senior member" of President Donald Trump's transition team who directed Flynn to contact Sergey Kislyak - then Russian ambassador to the United States - regarding a United Nations Security Council vote on Israeli settlements.

The cameras briefly caught Flynn as he arrived outside court this morning. From a body language perspective, there was one moment which was particularly telling. It can be seen in the above-looped video - repeated during 0:20, 1:10, and 1:25.

Although this image is a magnified and a screen-grab from its video source, we can still see Flynn's lips rolled inward. An Inward Lip Roll (ILR) is a nonverbal manifestation of one's psyche attempting to suppress strong emotions from growing.

You may also notice that Flynn's jaw is displaced forward. Known as a "Jaw Jut", this signifies an adrenaline surge - and although it can be seen with coupled with many other nonverbal signals - it usually accompanies an inward lip roll.

The body language signal which is easiest to see here is the momentary change of Flynn's neck. His neck muscles - including his sternocleidomastoid as well as his platysma are temporarily contracted and tensed. This is a reliable signal of fear.

Flynn's nonverbal cluster of Fear:

• Neck of Fear

Summary: Upon entering the federal courthouse in Washington DC this morning, Michael Flynn displayed a cluster of nonverbal signals indicating a significant level of fear.

Body Language Analysis No. 4131: Michael Flynn's Clandestine Plans - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Happy Thanksgiving.

Lawyers for Michael Flynn recently notified President Trump's legal team that they will no longer discuss the special counsel's investigation. This is seen by most as an indication that Mr. Flynn is cooperating with Robert Mueller's team or he's in the process of negotiating with them.

The photo above (and close-up below) of Michael Flynn was taken at the White House on Monday, 13 February 2017 - moments prior to President Donald Trump's and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's joint press conference.

These were also the last hours of Flynn's historically short (24 days) tenure as National Security Advisor. Later that day, Flynn was forced to resign after information became public that he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Sergey Kislyak - who was at the time, Russian ambassador to the U.S. On 26 and 27 January, Sally Yates had informed White House counsel Don McGahn, that Flynn had misled Pence regarding his communications with Kislyak and was susceptible to blackmail by Russian operatives.

From a nonverbal perspective, the particular expression on Micheal Flynn's face is worth a trillion dollars.

Flynn's mouth and lips are configured in what is known as a "Lip Purse" - and more specifically, a "Forward Lip Purse" (not to be confused with a Lateral Lip Purse - which has a completely different meaning).

A forward lip purse is a signal of Clandestine Plans and/or Clandestine Disagreement. Crucially, it is only displayed by individuals who perceive themselves to be significantly alpha relative to another's beta status.

Those who make this expression may, in fact, voice some disagreement, at least a portion of it - however if they do so, you can be absolutely sure they are withholding a large portion of their dissidence.

Moreover, a person using the forward lip purse believes they have a relatively good chance of implementing their plan. With this in mind, it's noteworthy that Michael Flynn was looking at Jared Kushner when he made this face (that's the President's son-in-law and senior advisor in the left foreground of the photo).

Body Language Analysis No. 3964: What Donald Trump Really Thinks about James Comey - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During yesterday's joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, each man fielded the questions from the press. It surprised no one that the first query directed to Donald Trump was regarding what the American President felt about James Comey's Testimony the day before.

DAVID BOWYER (beginning at 14:53): "Mr. President, ah, this morning, you were referring to the testimony of James Comey vindicating you. But, I wonder if you could tell us in person, Sir, why you feel that his testimony vindicated you, when it really boils down to his word against your word. And if you could also tell us sir, are, do tapes exist of your conversation with him?"

Donald Trump's eyes close as Bowyer says, "... vindicating you ...", then his torso, head, and neck begin to move backward, he inhales deeply, his nostrils flare. Then, during 15:03, as Bowyer says, "... us ...", he displays a classic Microexpression of Disgust mixed with Anger. Watch this several times at normal speed and then again at 1/2 and 1/4 speeds.

Then immediately afterward (15:04), when Mr. Bowyer says, "... Sir ...", the President displays another microexpression - a "Tongue Jut" - more specifically, a "Loose Tongue Jut". Do you know what this indicates?

Summary: Donald Trump feels significant disgust and anger for James Comey. This, of course, may not surprise you from a political point of view, however, it does show that the President, in this context, has a high level of personal motivation toward Mr. Comey, rather than one of relative objectivity.

Would you have seen these microexpressions - and correctly interpreted their meaning - if they were not pointed out to you? How skilled are you at seeing the moderate nonverbals, let alone the subtle signals - which are right in front of you all day long in your own personal and business life?

Body Language Analysis No. 3945: Donald Trump's Anxiety - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

This image was taken recently of Donald Trump in the White House. Below is a cropped, close-up view of the same photo.

As a nonverbal exercise, while alone in a quiet room, replicate the President's expression. Proceed in the following order:

1.   Thrust your jaw mildly-moderately forward
2.   Tighten the back (posterior) portion of your jaw muscles (masseter)
3.   Hold your upper and lower teeth about 3-4 mm apart (~1/8 - 1/6 inch)
4.   Draw the corners your mouth inward - pursing your lips ever so slightly -
      but don't push your lips forward - just pull them together
5.   Push your tongue forward, touching with moderate pressure
      on the back sides of your front, lower teeth
6.   Lower the entire width of both of your eyebrows
7.   Slightly elevate your central forehead - this will pull up your inner (medial) eyebrows,
      while leaving your side (lateral) eyebrows lowered (as per no. 6)
8.   Look down to your left
9.   Fixate your gaze at something in the middle distance (e.g., 3-6 meters away)
10. Slightly defocus your eyes
11. Stand up
12. Bend (flex) your neck forward about 15 - 20 degrees
13. Slightly bend your upper back forward ('hunching your back' - in a kyphosis-like rounding)
14. Slightly elevate your shoulders and foreshorten your neck

Now review to be sure you're performing all 14 items. What is the emotion that best describes how you feel?

Adopting this combination of postures and facial configurations will make you feel anxious, hesitant - and quite beta. Thus, not only does a worried person subconsciously morph his or her body language to reflect the way they are feeling in that moment - but the reverse also is true - adopting these nonverbal positions will make you truly feel the emotions that your body is signaling to your brain. The same is true for any feeling. You have the control panel. You're at the helm. You're steering the ship.

Body Language Analysis No. 3940: National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster's Press Conference regarding President Trump's Sharing of Classified Intelligence with the Russians - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

H.R. McMaster's press conference on Tuesday regarding President Trump sharing classified information with the Russians was packed with information. And while a good amount of it was conveyed via verbal language - a truckload arrived in the form of body language.

General McMaster displayed some particularly interesting nonverbal signals as the very first question was being asked (beginning at 6:00 in the above video):

Journalist: Thanks a lot. General McMaster, ah, you came out to the stakeout are yesterday and, ah, and coming out to the stakeout area, you said that the Washington Post story, which came out yesterday afternoon, was false. Do you stick by that assertion? Do you think that every element of that story is false and do you have anything to correct, in terms of what you said at the podium yesterday afternoon?

Now watch his face one more time in slow motion - paying close attention to McMaster's face as the journalist says the words which are color-coded below.

Journalist: Thanks a lot. General McMaster, ah, you came out to the stakeout are yesterday and, ah, and coming out to the stakeout area you said that the Washington Post story, which came out yesterday afternoon, was false. Do you stick by that assertion? Do you think that every element of that story is false and do you have anything to correct, in terms of what you said at the podium yesterday afternoon?

This first image was captured during 6:05, as McMaster was listening to the journalist's words, "... coming out ...". Note the general tilts his head downward (as he also gazes downward) and juts his jaw significantly forward. There are even portions of his lower teeth visible. This is significant for a sizable adrenaline surge. In this moment, he is experiencing the emotion of anger.

In the next instant (during 6:06), as the general was listening to the journalist say, "... the stakeout area ...", we see an excellent example of an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). An inward lip roll is a signal of the psyche's attempt at suppressing the crescendo of strong emotion (both felt internally and displayed externally).

A spit second later, as the journalist spoke the words, "... you said ..." (6:07), General McMaster displays a clear primary expression of Contempt (note his left 'Mustache area tighten and elevate simultaneous with his left flared nostril) - and with a secondary component of Anger (His eyebrows are drawn downward and slightly closer together. There is also increased tension in his lower eyelids). This display is evanescent enough to classify it as a microexpression.

A few seconds later in the same question, as the Journalist says, "... assertion? Do you think ..." (6:15 - 6:16), General McMaster again both gazes and tilts his head downward - as he juts his jaw forward - this time exposing even a bit more of his lower teeth. Once again, this display indicates Anger.

With the very next words of, "... that every element of that ..." (6:16 - 6:17), H.R. McMaster clenches his jaw in Anger - as the tissue below his lower lip bulges up (Frustration) and his chin displays dimpling. This was a very common expression of Barack Obama during his presidency.


Summary: H.R. McMaster felt significant emotional dissonance during his press conference on 16 May 2017. The short segment above demonstrates anger, contempt, frustration - as well as a strong desire to suppress these feelings. It's not possible, with this limited sampling, to determine whether the general feels these emotions toward himself, the journalist asking the question, the Russians, President Trump, or some other person(s).

Body Language Analysis No. 3934: Donald Trump's (False) Praising of James Comey - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey earlier today certainly raises crucial questions regarding the President's true motives.

In the video montage above, there are several examples of what, in nonverbal parlance, is known as a "Finger Point Hand Chop".

Note carefully each specific statement Donald Trump said regarding the FBI during these finger-point hand-chops:

"I respect the fact that Director Comey was able to come back after what he did, I respect that very much" (29 October 2016).

"And it took guts for Director Comey to make the move that he made in light of the kind of opposition he had where they were trying to protect her from criminal prosecution. You know that" (31 October 2016)

"Good job by the FBI" (3 November 2016).

"The FBI, and I give them a lotta credit, because they're fighting forces that they're not supposed to be fighting" (5 November 2016).

In this last image, we see President Trump shaking Director Comey's hand in the White House (22 January 2017). This handshake is Trump's default style - pulling Comey's hand very close to (and often touching) his lower chest (sometimes mid-chest level) while patting Comey's left upper arm/shoulder. This is handshake choreography cluster, when displayed frequently, as part of a long-term pattern, is highly indicative of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.


Summary: The finger-point hand-chop is highly correlative with deception (as well as deception combined with anger). This association is even greater when displayed during moments of defending against the accusation of a lie. It's one of many examples of hyper-alpha body language. This disproportional and additionally out-of-context nonverbal display, is emblematic of defensive overcompensation associated with lying.

Body Language Analysis No. 3933: Sally Yates Testimony before Senate Judiciary Committee - Nonverbal Communication and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today, former acting Attorney General, Sally Yates, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee investigating Russia's role in interference with the 2016 US Presidential election. In the above video excerpt, Ms. Yates is recounting her initial meeting with Don McGahn (White House counsel) concerning Michael Flynn.

Immediately below is the transcript of this specific video excerpt (full transcript available here), followed by a partial nonverbal analysis.

SALLY YATES (beginning at 0:00):"... the first thing we did was to explain to Mr. McGahn that the underlying conduct (0:04 - 0:05) that General Flynn had engaged in was problematic in and of itself.  

Secondly, we told him we felt like the vice president and others were entitled to know that the information that they were conveying to the American people wasn't true. And we wanted to make it really clear right out of the gate that we were not accusing Vice President Pence of knowingly providing false information to the American people.  

And, in fact, Mr. McGahn responded back to me to let me know that anything that General Flynn would've said would have been based - excuse me - anything that Vice President Pence would have said would have been based on what General Flynn had told him.  

Ahum, we told him the third reason was is because we were concerned that the American people had been misled about the underlying conduct and what General Flynn had done, and additionally, that we weren't the only ones (0:56 - 0:57) that knew all of this, that the Russians also knew about what General Flynn had done.  

And the Russians also knew that General Flynn had misled the vice president and others, because in the media accounts, it was clear from the vice president and others that they were repeating what General Flynn had told them, and that this was a problem because not only did we believe that the Russians knew this, but that they likely had proof of this information. And that created a compromise situation, a situation where the national security adviser essentially could be blackmailed by the Russians. 

Finally, we told them that we were giving them all of this information so that they could take action - the action that they deemed appropriate.  

Ahum, I remember that Mr. McGahn asked me whether or not General Flynn should be fired, and I told him that that really wasn't our call, that was up to them, but that we were giving them this information so that they could take action ..."


Note that during 0:04 - 0:05, as Ms. Yates says, "... Mr. McGahn that the underlying conduct that General Flynn ...", and later in this video segment as she says, "... and additionally, that we weren't the only ones that knew all of this ..." (during 0:56 - 0:57), the former acting US attorney General displays two excellent examples of what is know as a "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" (SRHW).

A Self-Righteous Head Wiggle is characterized by relatively rapid, side-to-side movements of the head and neck - and often is accompanied by a similar movement of the torso (although the torso component is quite minimal in these two examples). Sometimes the SRHW will be very short-lived (a near-microexpression) - however in these examples, although still relatively brief, they're of longer duration.

The Self-Righteous Head Wiggle (SRHW) is commonly displayed by individuals who are in the midst of hyper-alpha moments of particularly high confidence while expressing especially strong opinions.

The SRHW is subconsciously generated and not feigned. It's somewhat helpful to think of it as a mild-to-moderate form of nonverbal swagger.

It's also crucial to emphasize that the dynamics of a SRHW do not capture in a still image and must be viewed in motion. 

Although not present in these examples, the SRHW may also sometimes have an additional overlying backward motion component (when contempt, disgust, contempt and/or incredulity are also present) - or a superimposed forward motion (when condescending emotions or arrogance are coexisting).

Fascinatingly, the vocal pitch grows higher during the Self-Righteous Head Wiggle - providing an outstanding example of congruity between paralanguage and body language. Please re-watch these and listen to Sally Yates' voice momentarily increase an octave or two.

Summary: Sally Yates' nonverbal behavior during her testimony was indicative of high confidence and sincerity. She showed no signs of deception.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3922: Vladimir Putin and Michael Flynn in Moscow (Part I) - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In the last several months, the image above has become rather infamous. It was taken in Moscow in December of 2015 during a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Russian TV network, RT (Russia Today).

This second image, highlighting Michael Flynn and Vladimir Putin (a cropped portion of the first photo) is the version with which you're most probably familiar. You may also notice Jill Stein in the right foreground.

Michael Flynn was paid $45,000 to speak at this event. It's been recently reported that Flynn did not seek security clearance in order take part in this activity - or to receive any payment from a foreign government.

From a nonverbal perspective, this moment contains some classic expressions - particularly those of President Putin's.

In this third image, a further cropped and magnified portion of those above, we see Vladimir Putin's central forehead is contracted and elevated. His left peripheral forehead is relaxed. The Russian President's eyebrows are also partially elevated.

Looking at Putin's mouth, we see a faint hint of a false-smile, with its left corner up-turned.

His eyelids are also partially closed. It's important to note, that Putin does not have Ptosis ("droopy" eyelid[s]) - rather this is an active, albeit partial, closure. This finding is especially important given the context of his elevated eyebrows (and central forehead) - for the eyebrows are moving up while the eyelids are moving down. This "opposite-direction dynamic" of tissues immediately adjacent to each other is atypical - and a profound nonverbal red flag.

Putin's mid-face, the area above his upper lip and below his nose - is taut, while his nostrils are also flared (dilated).

This close-up of Michael Flynn shows us a dramatically contracted forehead - however, it's elevated along its entire width. His mid-face is also too tightly vectored laterally to express any sincerity. This is a common variation of an insincere smile.

Of profound importance is the seating arrangement - for Micheal Flynn is seated next to Vladimir Putin, immediately to his right. It's a position of honor (in fact, it's THE position of honor), yet it's also one which will elevate his anxiety (and Putin, of course, knew this).


It's also noteworthy that Flynn is using his right hand to adjust his left earpiece (translator). While it is possible that his left hand was temporarily over-occupied or his left fingers were slightly injured, it is more likely that his emotional-comfort level was significantly lowered given the context of sitting next to Vladimir in Moscow.

Jill Stein's expression shows yet another example of an insincere smile. Although the left corner of her mouth is upturned - her mid-face is much too tightened - and her left nostril is far too flared to be expressing sincerity.

Moreover, Jill Stein does not have an under-bite, yet in this instant, we can see that her jaw is thrusting forward. This is, in no way, consistent with a sincere smile. She is very much feeling an amalgam of both anger and disgust - but is trying to put on her best face for Putin.

Did you notice the older gentleman sitting behind Putin? (from the perspective of this picture, he's positioned just "above" Putin's left shoulder). That's Mikhail Gorbachev - the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union.


Summary:

Michael Flynn, well-aware he's under the spotlight, is trying too hard. His smile is feigned.

Jill Stein is experiencing disgust and anger, yet understandably, she's suppressing her feelings with a false and thinly veneered social smile (insincere).

Putin's expression (an elevated central forehead contraction, elevated eyebrows with a simultaneous partial [false] mouth smile, partially closed eyelids, tightened mid-face with flared nostrils) is one made only by an alpha personality in the presence of and/or in the midst advantage over a relative-beta personality. It's extremely indicative of both clandestine motive(s) and clandestine plan(s). It also has components of disgust and impatient/arrogant dismissal. Colloquially, this expression can be accurately summarized as, "Should I skin him now, or skin him later?" and "I can hardly tolerate sitting next to this (expletive)".
