Body Language Analysis №4712: One Body Language Behavior you should almost Never display  — Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

Note the configuration of Elon Musk’s hand-arm display in the above picture. This is called a ‘Steeple’ — more specifically a ‘High Conventional Steeple’.

This example is called a ‘High’ Steeple because it’s positioned relatively high with respect to the rest of his body — here at the level of his upper chest and even his lower face …

… and the term ‘Conventional’ Steeple applies here as a differentiation from other types of steeple displays (such as a ‘Pistol Steeple’, ‘Basketball Steeple’, etc.)

For the most part, few people ever use the conventional steeple (whether it’s held high, mid-level, or a low steeple) — but those who do use it, tend to dramatically over-use it.

Exceptions to this, are those who are extremely arrogant, narcissists, or sociopaths/psychopaths — or individuals who are taught to use it (or its use is modeled for them by a parent, influential authority figure, etc.) — and subsequently it becomes a default behavior.

A conventional steeple is an example of a body language behavior that’s not just alpha — it’s a hyper-alpha behavior.

To clarify — the term “alpha” can be used to describe an example of a behavior’s attempt at dominance — relative to other more submissive (beta) behaviors.

However, the term “alpha” can also be used in a more Gestalt sense — to describe a person’s rank in a given context/subcontext of society (as it’s perceived by themself/subjectively or by others).

Dominant, influential and powerful individuals very often have moments of less-dominant (even submissive), fearful, and acquiescing behavior. The opposite is also true with individuals who are otherwise not dominant, not influential, and who rarely wield power.

Noticing these fluxes of behavior (changes you previously might have called subtle or not noticed at all) — will give you insight as to their underlying motives — and, thus, a tremendous advantage.

Displaying a conventional steeple may make you feel ‘in charge’, confident, powerful — and yes, it will make you feel ‘alpha’ — but also, if you have a reasonable level of baseline empathy, using it will make you feel arrogant.

If a person uses this nonverbal behavior often — and they don’t feel arrogant — with very high probability, their empathy is very low or nonexistent (i.e., a high-narcissist — or a sociopath/psychopath [APD]).

I recommend almost never using a conventional steeple.

If those who I teach insist on displaying a conventional steeple — I advise them to use it for (literally) just a second of their speech/talk/discussion (when they’re saying the most important word of the most important sentence of the most important paragraph).

Otherwise (if people over-use this body language — and since it’s so potent, this is an extremely easy thing to do) it may make you feel confident and puffed-up, ….

… and while those who like you/your agenda will continue to like you and advocate for your cause — those who don’t like you will dislike you even more.

And crucially, it will have a similar rapport-destroying and influence-diminishing effect upon those who are ‘on-the-fence’ regarding you/your ‘leadership’ and/or your plan/agenda.

So while using the conventional steeple (all but very sparingly) may make you feel (temporarily) powerful — but why [insert rhetorical vocal tone] use a behavior that works against you?

Looking at Musk’s face, note his left eyebrow is elevated. He’s questioning and/or not believing what he’s hearing.

He’s not turning his torso or lower body toward the speaker, just his head and neck, along with his eyes. We don’t look directly at people who we don’t like, don’t believe, or don’t respect.

Moreover, he’s tilting his head down here — in this context, this configuration is sending signals of predation, power, and aggression.

Musk’s lower face-mouth-jaw are configured in a pseudo-pout. This transmits thought-emotions of arrogance and feigned consideration.

In this image, Musk’s mid-face is projecting an amalgam of primarily disgust as well as a component of contempt.

SUMMARY: A conventional steeple (as Musk examples here) is an example of a body language which may, for the moment, make you feel alpha and powerful — but it will backfire on you. Others will interpret things very differently.

Nearly everyone (except those who are solidly within your fan base) will (accurately) read a conventional steeple as arrogant. It will work against you — helping to destroy your rapport and diminish your influence. Don’t use it.

Body Language Analysis No. 4159: Nikki Haley, Jerusalem, and the United Nations - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday 21 December 2017, Nikki Haley, the United States' Ambassador to the United Nations, issued a direct threat to the other UN members:

Yet the United Nations voted overwhelmingly to condemn President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This came despite Nikki Haley's threats to pull funding from the UN and aid to countries. The final vote: 128 countries voted for the resolution of condemnation, 9 countries voted "no" (agreeing with President Trump), - while 35 nations abstained (including Australia, Canada, Mexico).

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of one portion of Ambassador Haley's Speech at the UN last week.

AMBASSADOR HALEY (beginning at 0:32): But we’ll be honest with you Ω When we make generous contributions to the UN, we also have a legitimate expectation that our goodwill is recognized and respected. When a nation is singled out for attack in this organization, that nation is disrespected. What’s more, that nation is asked to pay for the privilege of being disrespected.

During 0:34, immediately after she says, "... But we’ll be honest with you ...", Ambassador Haley makes an expression of Disgust. This is a relatively subtle-to-mild facial display of this emotion and notated by the symbol Ω.

Setting aside nonverbal behavior for a moment - from a Paralanguage/Statement Analysis perspective, whenever a person says, "to be honest with you" or in this example, with the forced teaming (de Becker) verbal modifier variant of "we'll" ("... we'll be honest with you ...") - there's an extremely high likelihood of overt deception and manipulation occurring.

A few moments later, during 0:57, just as Ambassador Haley says, "... that nation is asked to pay for the privilege of being disrespected. ...", she:

• Retracts her torso, head, and neck
• Contracts and Elevates the entire width of her forehead
• Actively partially closes both of her upper eyelids

Opposite movements of adjacent tissues - e.g., the upper eyelids moving down (partially closing) - while the nearby tissues of eyebrows and forehead are moving up - is an unnatural dynamic and a nonverbal red flag.

This nonverbal cluster expression dynamic projects an amalgam of:

• Contempt
• Arrogance
• Disgust
• Feigned Disbelief

Summary: During her speech to the UN on Thursday 21 December 2017, Ambassador Nikki Haley's nonverbal behavior projected the emotions of Disgust, Contempt, Arrogance, and Feigned Disbelief - toward any UN members who would disagree with President Trump's stance regarding the United States' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Body Language Analysis No. 4146: Roy Moore, Red Flags, and Sociopaths - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In this image of Roy Moore (as well as the close-up and third image below), we see an elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC) along with a "Mouth Smile". Yet this smile is anything but sincere.

Now, of course, every human being makes this same expression ... occasionally. We do so as a nonverbal manifestation of the following emotions:

• Arrogance
• Contempt
• Disbelief (specifically, Smug Incredulity)

It's normal to feel each of these emotions from time to time (provided they don't occur too frequently).

Additionally, each of these emotions can also be projected by different facial expressions.

So, while we all display this expression once-in-a-while, those individuals who are Sociopaths (Antisocial Personality Disorder) will display this facial configuration with much greater frequency vs. the general population.

No psychologically healthy person will display this facial expression with significant frequency.

Summary: Whenever an elevated Central Forehead Contraction occurs FREQUENTLY along with a "mouth smile" (it's usually only a partial mouth smile) - it's not only insincere, but it also has a very strong correlation with antisocial personality disorder (sociopathic behavior).

This nonverbal display is so characteristic of Roy Moore, that he even chose a photo of himself with this same expression to use as his Wikipedia profile picture.

Body Language Analysis No. 4060: Ted Cruz's Default Facial Expression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

There are people who, rather than maintaining relatively neutral faces - default to a few expressions which they nearly constantly "wear". These are very literally "physiologic masks". Ted Cruz is one of these people.

The image above shows the Texas Senator with his most common facial default.

The three key components of Cruz's expression are:

1. Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (Elevated-CFC)
2. Elevated Inner (medial) Eyebrows
3. Partial Mouth "Smile" (an insincere smile)

It's important to stress that his mouth is configured in an insincere smile and, as it is here - nearly always suppressed.

Of course, we all make this expression occasionally when we're feeling:

1. Arrogant
2. Contempt
3. Smug Disbelief

All three of these emotions may also be manifested by other facial expressions. It's also crucial to remember that we're all allowed to feel arrogant, contemptuous, or smug incredulity - after all, we're human (But hopefully we don't feel these too often).

While ninety-six percent of us make this expression once in a while, four percent of the population displays this expression quite often.

Other than the fact we don't like others to project arrogance, contempt, or disbelief in our direction - there's another reason we are repulsed by this expression: for most of the time when the central forehead and inner eyebrows are elevated - the mouth is configured in a painful or saddened manner. But when we see a bit of a smile with an elevated central forehead - it sends out red flags. It doesn't feel right. It's alienating. But not everyone catches this warning sign.

Summary: The frequent display of this expression (elevated central forehead contraction, elevated inner eyebrows, with a partial mouth smile) is, among other things, an extremely reliable signal for chronic insincerity.

Body Language Analysis No. 3990: Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, The G20, and Default Expressions - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The long-awaited and much-hyped encounter between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will soon be underway. The two Presidents will meet in Hamburg at the G20 Summit in just a few hours.

From a nonverbal perspective, Trump and Putin share something in common - they both have a relatively limited set of facial expressions. This behavior allows them to more easily hide their true thoughts and feelings behind what are essentially, "living masks".

One of Vladimir Putin's default expressions is shown in the image below. Notice that his head is tilted slightly downward and the camera is positioned above his head. This gives the appearance that the corners of his mouth are pulled upward - however they're retracted straight back and laterally. Putin's central forehead is also contracted and vectored upward along with his central (medial) eyebrows.

When you see this configuration ("cluster") of facial expressions, always think of these three thought-emotions:

1. Arrogance
2. Contempt
3. Disbelief

It's important to point out that all three of these emotions may be manifested via other expressions. And, of course, disbelief can occur without arrogance or contempt, but arrogance and contempt very often have an accompanying component of disbelief. Which of these thought-emotions is President Putin experiencing in this moment? What specifically allows you to differentiate between these three feelings?

Body Language Analysis No. 3954: Donald Trump, "Covfefe", and a Facial Expression which Should Always Raise Red Flags - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

While we may never know what Donald Trump meant by "covfefe" in his tweet last night - the meaning of his body language in the moment above (close-up image below) is not up for debate.

Although his hair obscures a good share of his forehead, we can still see that his central forehead is contracted and drawn upward (an "elevated CFC").

Crucially, if a CFC is displayed, particularly an elevated CFC, one should immediately evaluate the status of the mouth. Note Trump's mouth is configured in a false smile. It's an act. Its overt insincerity is betrayed by the corners of his mouth vectored primarily laterally (rather than up) as well as its asymmetrical shape.

Whenever a CFC is seen in the presence of a "smile" - the "smile" always false - always insincere, and thus, with this cluster, the feelings being experienced in that moment fit into one of the following three (often overlapping) emotions:

1. Disbelief (frequently feigned)
2. Arrogance
3. Contempt

We all, every one of us, use this expression occasionally. Yet when a person uses this nonverbal cluster frequently it has a very high correlation with Sociopath behavior (Antisocial Personality Disorder).

Notice also, Trump's head and neck are contracted backward together with a simultaneous downward neck tilting (causing a "bunching up" of neck tissue and giving him a "double chin"). This is a signal of disbelief, and is rarely seen in isolation. Here it acts as a disbelief amplifier.

Summary: Whenever the Central Forehead is Contracted accompanied by a "smile" - the "smile" is always insincere - and indicates disbelief, arrogance, and/or contempt. When observed frequently, this behavior has a very high correlation with a sociopathic personality.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3901: Jared Kushner in Iraq - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

It is said among insiders that Jared Kushner shows an "unwavering loyalty" toward his father-in-law. He has rapidly come to be Donald Trump's most trusted advisor. Kushner's assignments include negotiating an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, overseeing relationships with China, Canada, and Mexico (triple ambassadorship), the chief of the new White House Office of American Innovation, fixing the opioid epidemic - and increasingly he's assuming the role of what is essentially the de facto Secretary of State.

Earlier this week Mr. Kushner made a surprise trip to Iraq. The photo above is from that trip - and not surprisingly, it has drawn tremendous criticism.

From a purist's perspective, the clothes we wear are not considered part of our body language vocabulary - but the purists are sorely mistaken.

Our clothes are profound nonverbal illustrators - for they are extensions of our face/body and much of the time project our personality as well as the context of our mental state. In some settings this principle certainly applies more so than others. In nonverbal parlance, the term "Illustrator" describes a subset of body language signals we display (>99.9+% subconsciously) to emphasize, underline, italicize and act as exclamation-points for other aspects of our verbal communication and behavior.

If Jared Kushner would have donned semi-military garb - or at least jeans and a T-shirt, no one would have thought it unusual. But by choosing to highlight himself and moreover looking extremely Brooks Brothersesque while doing so, he dramatically and arrogantly distances himself from those people with whom he's attempting to build rapport. It sends signals of aloofness, ignorance, incompetence - and a complete lack of empathy. Kushner is very much saying, "I have to be here, but I don't want to" as well as, "I belong to the country club - and you don't". Indeed, many of those in Iraq (or others simply viewing this image) would interpret his choice of garb in this setting as a nonverbal equivalent of a middle finger shoved in their (our) collective faces'.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3685: Hillary Clinton at Commander-in-Chief Forum - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump participated (although separately) in the "Commander-in-Chief Forum" conducted by NBC News earlier this evening. Of course it's been widely noted that, among other issues, Secretary Clinton struggles with "likability".

From a nonverbal perspective, if Mrs. Clinton was to "go back to her emotional mindset" she had during her time as Secretary of State, she would do much better at building rapport. Improved body language would be one way for her to accomplish this change. And rather than gaining the trust of foreign ministers and heads-of-state - it would now be with the electorate.

Three rapport destroying nonverbal behaviors that Hillary Clinton commonly displays are exemplified in the video above - and in one place these are even simultaneous.

During the 0:22 second mark, Mrs. Clinton configures her hands in a pseudo-prayer, tilts her head and neck backwards - and closes her eyelids in prolonged blinks (also increased blinking frequency). All of these when occurring separately can (depending on the other nonverbal behaviors present) project arrogance and a condescending emotional tones. However when these are seen clustered close together - the patronizing feelings projected are particularly strong.

If people "feel that they're being talked down to", their hearts and votes will go elsewhere.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3644: Eric Trump, Humayun Khan, Sexual Harassment and Patronizing Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, Eric Trump - the son of the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, was a guest on CBS This Morning where he discussed his father's escalating fight with the parents of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who died a hero on the battlefield in 2004. Eric Trump also spoke of his own father, his sister Ivanka - and his thoughts on sexual harassment in the workplace - for which he received tremendous criticism far and wide.

During this interview, Eric Trump repeated used a body language display known as a "Pseudo-prayer" where the hands are placed together in a praying configuration. With the exception of a religious context, begging and a small number of cultural settings, the use of this gesture indicates arrogance and a condescending emotional tone.

If you see the pseudo-prayer (outside the above exceptions), you can be almost 100% certain that that person displaying it believes that they're in the right and believes the person(s) with whom they're speaking/interacting is wrong. This body language is significantly more commonly displayed by the wealthy, powerful ... and narcissistic - thus those who are more likely to abuse their power (and harass).

The additional dynamic of an up-and-down chopping motion amplifies the already patronizing emotional tone of the pseudo-prayer.

When the pseudo-prayer is being used, the words often being simultaneously expressed may appear to attempting to build rapport and understanding (e.g., during a negotiation or in the sales process) - but in such settings, the person rarely changes their position. Take caution - for when kind verbal language, appearing to be "reasonable" is used in conjunction with the pseudo-prayer - it's the body language which is telling their true thoughts and emotions. In short, the Pseudo-prayer is a big red flag.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3573: Angela Merkel, the G7, Destroying Rapport and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Angela Merkel is one of the most powerful and influential heads of state in the World. Somewhere along the line however, she received some very misguided nonverbal training and ever since she's displayed the low steeple excessively (more specifically, a low classic steeple). If a leader (or anyone) uses a classic steeple (low, medium or high) - they should do so very sparingly - and only for a second or less during the most important part of a speech or presentation.

Chancellor Merkel uses the low classic steeple as some form of an idiosyncratic visual signature - thus rather than building rapport, this body language helps to destroy it.  Rather than showing strength and assertiveness - it sends signals of arrogance and patronizing emotional tones. She may very well not be intending to project these feelings - for this is highly posed (and erroneously taught) and thus not representative of her emotions - but it is to a variable degree BEING FELT by those who view this moment.

The picture above (cropped section below, taken during the recent G7 meeting in Japan) betrays even greater levels of Merkel's nonverbal misguidance. A classic steeple is not, in ANY way, a substitute for a greeting. Thus her posing in this configuration while the other leaders are waving, not only stands in dramatic and condescending contrast to their friendly salutations (even though posed), but it also very bluntly declares, "I stand alone", "I'm not one of you" or "I'm Not in Solidarity." It is also not a coincidence that the color of her top stands out against the other leaders.

It's an interesting combination of Angela Merkel being a strong leader, flaunting a misunderstanding re: her earlier (mis)learning of nonverbal displays, idiosyncratic behavior, being the lone female (and signaling to younger women leaders) - and perhaps a bit of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3448: Ted Cruz's Challenge to Debate Donald Trump One-on-One; Cruz's Default Facial Expression - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

One profoundly valuable body language skill is the ability to detect insincerity.  The single most common nonverbal signal of insincerity is over frequently contracting the forehead muscles. The correlation is even higher when it's limited to central forehead contraction (CFC) - as opposed to the entire width of the forehead. Moreover, if there's any inkling of a coexisting "mouth smile" (insincere) with the central forehead contraction - a huge red flag is raised.

We all make this expression from time to time when we're feeling:

1. Arrogant (although this is of course, not the only expression of arrogance)
2. Contempt (there are also other expressions for contempt)
3. Smug-Incredulity

As human beings, we're expected to feel such feelings occasionally. Yet when a person exhibits the CFC with a smile chronically - be warned.

Pundits, bad actors/actresses, most news reporters/anchors make this expression with a higher frequency compared with the general population. Politicians also display this nonverbal facial cluster much more than average. Of all the candidates, from all the parties running for the presidency this election cycle, no one displays this facial expression more than Ted Cruz.

CFC + partial mouth pseudo-smile during 0:33 and just after Mr. Cruz is referencing Megyn Kelly and Donald Trump: "If she asks him mean question - I mean his hair might stand on-end."

This CFC with partial/insincere mouth smile is seen just after Sen. Cruz challenged Mr. Trump to a one-on-one debate (during 0:50).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3319: Donald Trump Feels He Has Nothing to Apologize For - Body Language on Stephen Colbert's Late Show (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night Donald Trump was a guest on the Late Show. Stephen Colbert apologized to Mr. Trump for things he's said regarding the businessman over the years. Colbert then asks, "... I just want to give you the opportunity - it there anybody you would like to apologize to right now yourself?"

"Ahhhh, no. Maybe the audience, how 'bout the audience? Naw, no apologies."

Just after he says, "Ahhhh" and as continuing during his following "no", Trump displays the expression seen below (captured during 0:29). Note his facial expression at this moment: his central forehead is contracted (CFC) and coupled with a unilateral and false mouth smile.

While we all make this expression (a nonverbal "cluster") from time-to-time, it always indicates one (or more) of the following emotions:
  • Incredulity
  • Arrogance
  • Contempt
It's also important to stress that each of these emotions may be nonverbally expressed in other ways.

Most people would say of course say, given the verbal context here, that Trump's emotion is disbelief. Yet, how would you differentiate it from either contempt or arrogance?
