Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3580: Muhammad Ali, Donald Trump, Repulsion and Body Language (PHOTOS)

After the passing of Muhammad Ali, the differences between the three-time World champion boxer and Donald Trump have been brought into high contrast by the members of the media and others on social media.

This image above was captured at an event in 2007 and shows the two men are standing together. Ali's facial expressions are heavily influenced by his Parkinson's Disease (or a Parkinson-like condition known as Dementia Pugilistica) - resulting in a mask-like appearance. Thus from a body language perspective, we are limited here to interpret Muhammad's emotions.

Mr. Trump's expression is centered on the configuration of his mouth. More specifically, his jaw, lips and particularly his tongue are clustered in what is know as a "Tight Forward Tongue Jut". If you've ever fed an infant, you've seen this expression before. For when you try and feed a baby creamed asparagus - and he doesn't like it - the child will form their mouth, lips and tongue in this exact same manner. The tight forward tongue jut is a signal of disgust and repulsion at something or someone. Indeed simply making this facial expression will often evoke some level of nausea.

Last summer we saw Donald Trump make this same expression when he was posed with the question, "Have you ever asked God for forgiveness?"

Donald Trump was repulsed by the idea of asking God for forgiveness as he was also repulsed by Muhammad Ali.

This website serves as an objective reference source for the science and art of Body Language/Nonverbal Communication. In an effort to be both practical and academic, many examples from/of varied cultures, politicians, professional athletes, legal cases, public figures, etc., are cited in order to teach and illustrate both the interpretation of others’ body language as well as the projection of one’s own nonverbal skills in many different contexts – not to advance any political, religious or other agenda.
