Body Language Analysis No. 4336: Alita: Battle Angel, Large Eyes, and Sexual Attraction - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Alita: Battle Angel is due to be released on 21 December 2018. It's a cyberpunk action film produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. Robert Rodriguez is the director. The film is based on Yukito Kishiro's manga, Battle Angel Alita.

Most westerners confuse manga and anime. While these two storytelling media aren't synonymous, many of their characters share the similarity of large eyes. Alita is a cyborg heroine who's portrayed by Rosa Salazar via motion capture techniques. Modern special effects also allow these artists to enlarge Alita's eyes. These contrast dramatically with the other characters' normal-sized eyes.

It's no coincidence that, regardless of the culture, whether viewed by men or women - women with larger eyes are judged to be more attractive. However, research shows the same principle is not true when assessing the relative attractiveness of men.

Intriguingly, from person to person, there's really minimal variation in the actual size of eyes. While significantly nearsighted people have eyes which are a bit larger - and substantially farsighted people can have smaller eyes - when we say, "she's got big eyes", it's really just a mild variation in the shape of the facial bones and eye sockets, and the eyes are positioned slightly more forward. This makes them appear larger.

Highlighting the eyes with makeup can give the appearance of larger eyes. Such coloration will, naturally, also draw attention due to contrasting hues. In the right context (e.g., depending upon the other simultaneous/near-simultaneous nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage signals), increasing eye contact is flirtatious and will dramatically enhance subjective attraction.

SUMMARY: Larger eyes in women are cross-culturally judged to be more sexually attractive. Some makeup techniques will artificially give the appearance of bigger eyes - and while there are certainly cultural, individual, and fashion variations - this is the primary reason why eye makeup has been used for centuries. Coupled with contextually increased eye contact, these characteristics will subjectively enhance sexual attraction and flirtatiousness.

Body Language Analysis No. 4193: Hope Hicks, Sexual Attraction, Armpits, and Elbows - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

Yesterday, in a triple-sourced article, The New York Times reported that Mark Corallo (who served as a spokesman for Donald Trump's legal team before resigning in July) has concerns that the White House communications director Hope Hicks "could be contemplating obstructing justice".

Specifically, Ms. Hicks allegedly told President Trump on a conference call that Donald Trump Jr.'s emails "will never get out,". It's also reported that Mr. Corallo plans to share this information with special counsel Robert Mueller.

The above picture of Hope Hicks was taken in early November 2017. She was on a small boat with other members of the President's entourage - on their way to the Pearl Harbor memorial. This stop in Hawai'i occurred just prior to Donald Trump's five-nation Asia trip.

With rare exception, whenever a woman exposes her armpits - and more specifically as Ms. Hicks is doing here - directed OUT LATERALLY (not straight ahead) - it's a subtype of high-alpha nonverbal behavior. More specifically, this display is very strong signal of both sexual attraction and putting oneself on sexual display.

Hicks' sexual emotions are being amplified even further via the upward direction of her elbows.

Of course, both men and women need (and feel the need) to adjust their hair. However, regardless of gender, no one ever makes this configuration without first feeling high levels of emotional confidence (alpha emotions). Moreover, with women, it's extremely rare for this behavior (arms held high, elbows out laterally) to occur without the presence of either significant sexual attraction and/or in the absence of a sexual display.

Summary: Hope Hicks is, with very high probability, sexually attracted to the man with whom she's speaking - and she wants him to know it.

Body Language Analysis No. 4189: Tom Cruise, a Broken Ankle, and Rebecca Ferguson - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson were recently guests on The Graham Norton Show. In their effort in promoting their upcoming film Mission: Impossible - Fallout, they also (unknowingly) put on a series of nonverbal teachable moment displays. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

During 0:06 - as Graham Norton is exclaiming, "You're nearly finished ..." and Tom Cruise realizes it's now time for him to have to discuss his broken ankle. He then displays a False Shirt Cuff Adjustment. This is a signal of Alpha Up-Regulation or "Dialing Up One's Alpha" - typically seen in people (usually men) who already have an alpha personality - however during moments when realize they must "Step it up" further/"Step up to the plate".

During 1:09 - 1:11, Tom Cruise displays a Tongue in Cheek combined with a Jaw Confessional. This moment shows classic Emotional Dissonance - for he is embarrassed that he messed up the stunt (as evidenced by the Jaw Confessional - quick and brief lateral movement of the jaw) - yet he feels very much like "He's Just Won" - because he now gets to show us a video of him running/toughing it out despite his broken ankle (the Tongue in Cheek tells us this). Thus this is a moment of a manufactured (false) self-deprecation combined with braggadocio (e.g., "Aw, shucks folks - it was nothin'.").

During 1:14, just after Simon Pegg says, "... I can't watch this ...", Tom Cruise touches Rebecca Ferguson on her knee.

As she touches him on his upper arm (with her full palm).

Rebecca Ferguson proceeds to prolong her touch of Tom Cruise - as she holds onto his elbow. Simultaneously, he displays a False Sock Adjustment on his left leg (he broke his right ankle). This is another example of alpha up-regulation.

This empathy/affection display of Ms. Ferguson - together with another example of Cruise "Dialing Up" his alpha - betrays their mutual affection.

During 2:04 - 2:06, Rebecca Ferguson, rapidly shakes both of her hands, vertically with fingers splayed. This is a display signifying the desire to ward-off a painful emotional or physical experience - either for oneself or for another person. When it's done for another person - it's indicative of a high-empathy display.

During 2:32, just before the close-up view of Cruise breaking his ankle, the actor displays another example of a nonverbal "Warding Off" signal. Note how, even though his mouth is opened very widely, his lips are stretched very tightly - with none of his teeth being visible. Additionally, his eyelids are momentarily shut/nearly shut - also in a moment of muscular high-tension.

In this instant, Cruise is re-living the event and a portion of his own accompanying physical pain. If he were instead, displaying this body language for another person - (as was Rebecca Ferguson with her finger-splayed, hand shaking) - it would be another signal of high empathy.

During 2:47, Ms. Ferguson touches Mr. Cruise on his knee once again - as Cruise, more prolongingly, touches Ferguson on her mid-back, and just above her right elbow, and ...

.... a couple seconds later, during 2:49, he also reciprocates by touching her knee one more time.

Rebecca Ferguson then touches his shoulder and back with her hands, as she momentarily forehead-touches Tom Cruise's shoulder (3:17 - 3:19). Such forehead touching is a highly reliable nonverbal signal of strong affection.

Yet again, Cruise then touches Ferguson's knee for the third time in just over two minutes. Outside the world of sports, with rare exception, the only two reasons an adult touches another adult on the knee are:

• A Power (Hyper-Alpha) Display or
• Sexual Attraction

Summary: Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson have both affection and sexual attraction for each other.

Body Language Analysis No. 4149: Zendaya, Zac Efron, and "The Greatest Showman" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Zendaya was recently a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon promoting her recent film, The Greatest Showman. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the above video segment.

During 2:56, at the end of the sentence, "... and so, we really had to quite literally trust each other, because he had to hold my weight and I had to hold him, you know, so it was just kinda like, a - great icebreaker ..." , Zendaya displays what is known as a "Lip Curl".

A lip curl involves the lips protruding outward with a slight to sometimes dramatic momentary concave shape as they extend away from the teeth in a brief exaggerated dynamic. This is a moderate example and involves mostly her upper lip. It projects the (primarily) alpha emotions of Hubris, False Bravado, Hyperbole, and Braggadocio. Very often there is also a component of Sarcasm present.

This photo was taken approximately 0.10 second earlier. While blurrier (due to her motion) than the preceding image - it captures a Zendaya's upper lip in a configuration more typical of a "Lip Curl".

During 4:03 - 4:04, just after the blooper video of her and Zac Efron colliding, Zendaya displays a Loose Tongue Jut. This nonverbal signals the thought emotions of "I've made a mistake", "I've been caught", "I've been bad" (Navarro). It very often has components of self-deprecating emotions - and in such scenarios, it's helpful to think of it as a nonverbal equivalent of the common verbal expression, "My Bad!"

Take care not to confuse a "loose tongue jut" with a "tight tongue jut" - as they have completely different meanings.

Just after the viewing of a portion of the film trailer, Zendaya retracts/hyper-flexes her left ring finger - touching it with her thumb (during 4:42).

A few seconds later, she grabs and twists that same, left ring finger (during 4:45).

In this setting, these left ring finger manipulations/MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) are signals of Zendaya's affection and sexual attraction for Zac Efron - as well as her accompanying anxiety.

Body Language Analysis No. 4055: What Does Jessica Chastain Feel For Matt Damon? - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this combined video of The Graham Norton Show, Matt Damon is a guest on two different episodes. On one of those appearances, Jessica Chastain is sitting beside him. These accomplished actors have co-starred together in two different films - Interstellar and The Martian.

During the 5:49 - 5:52 segment (and for an instant during 5:34), Jessica Chastain can be seen slowly and gently stroking/caressing the inner portion of her lower arm (forearm), upper arm, and across the antecubital fossa (the region opposite of the elbow, on the inner portion of that joint).

Take some time right now to gently brush this same portion of your own arm. Do this on your bare arm. If you have forgotten, this region of skin is extremely sensitive. To be blunt, when touching this area so gently in this same manner as Jessica is doing - is a form of self-stimulation. There can be no doubt that Jessica Chastain is sexually attracted to Matt Damon.

In a close-up of Ms. Chastain's face, we can see her pupils are dramatically dilated. The fact that she's in a studio under bright lights (which, of course, would normally cause pupils to constrict unless there is another significant influence), and barring any pharmacologic or medical causes (which are not being implied, nor at all likely here), and coupling this finding with the above noted caressing of her inner arm - Jessica's dilated pupils indicate sexual attraction.

Body Language Analysis No. 4001: Jodie Whittaker, Dr. Who, and Flirting from a TARDIS - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

For those of you in distant and parallel Universes, who haven't yet heard, Jodie Whittaker will be the next Time Lord. Dr. Who, a British science fiction television series, running since 1963, has had twelve male actors playing the lead protagonist. Ms. Whittaker will be the first woman in that role.

From a nonverbal perspective, what makes this image of Jodie Whittaker flirtatious?

The Time Lord's left eye is partially covered. When an eye is partially or fully covered, depending on the other nonverbal signals present, several distinct emotional messages are projected:

  • One is an Air of Mystery. This partial revealing of an eye makes us curious. We wonder. It makes us want to know what Jodie is thinking.
  • Having one eye partially or fully covered is also a metaphor for A State of Partial Undress. And just as if her hair were clothing - it leaves us wanting
  • Covering an eye also is A Form of Play - a peekaboo analog from our childhood. It sends forth feelings of, "Come play with me".

What else is Jodie's face revealing? Notice her mouth - there are two specific nonverbal elements present which, through nonverbal alchemy, combine to form a third:

    • Ms. Whitttaker is displaying a Partially Suppressed Mouth Smile. It's not a sincere smile - for her eyes are not "smiling". Yet a partially suppressed mouth smile primes the emotional brains' of anyone seeing it, such that their feelings of joy-happiness-humor-fun are partially but immediately elevated. As human beings, we want to mirror these emotions - and thus a partially suppressed smile is a very effective and very rapid method of triggering rapport.
    • Dr. Who's is also displaying a Forward Lip Purse - which signals a Clandestine Disagreement and/or a Clandestine Plan. This adds to her mystery. It amplifies our curiosity - which simultaneously magnifies sexual attraction
    • A partially suppressed mouth smile together with a forward lip purse combines to project an emotion of mischievousness - which further adds to attraction

Body Language Analysis No. 3965: Manspreading, Madrid, and a Business Faux Pas - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Recently the city of Madrid has taken measures to limit "Manspreading" on public transportation. Manpreading is the colloquial term for the "Seated Crotch Display" wherein a person (almost always a man) sits with his legs spread wide - thus exposing his crotch. The feet are most frequently positioned sole-downward and the elbows are often protruding laterally in a "maximum space mode".

On a bus, subway, plane, or in other public areas - manspreading is done at the expense - often dramatically - of those seated adjacently.

In crowded public situations, we typically suspend our personal space (intimate space) norms which would never apply to other scenarios. For example, we may touch shoulders, elbows, and upper arms of those sitting next to us on a crowded airplane, because we have no choice and the idea of shared space takes over. But not everyone observes this in equal fashion.

Many men will often default into a manspreading configuration. And while it's certainly no excuse, some men will go a lifetime without realizing what they're doing makes those seated next to them emotionally (and physically) very uncomfortable.

Why do men do this? There are several reasons. In a public setting, the seated crotch display is a mode of asserting dominance - very much akin to young male gorillas beating on their chests. Manspreading in these crowed settings is a type of alpha/hyper-alpha, and often narcissistic behavior.

Men who are in straight, platonic relationships will often sit around a table in this manner. And provided they're relatively equal in the pecking order, men will also do this in a friendly professional/work setting.

Men who manspread frequently very likely have low empathy quotients.

Although most commonly exhibited by straight men, people of all sexual orientations will also sit in a seated crotch display fashion when sexually attracted to another person. In such cases they usually "crotch point" (and foot point) toward the desired individual.

A tremendous problem is created, however, when men use the seated crotch display in professional settings when women are present - or when a subordinate male sits in this manner in the presence of his superior (regardless of their gender). It's particularly common and extremely offensive in the case of male-female business settings. Many men won't ever realize just how often this, and similar actions, will evoke strong negative conditioned responses in women. This occurs to the point of creating other secondary problems, which on the surface don't seem to be related, yet will precipitate the killing of potential sales and negotiations. In such interactions, manspreading is very frequently accompanied by other alpha, hyper-alpha, and narcissistic verbal language, paralanguage, and body language behavior.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3535: Prince, Sexual Signals and Body Language (PHOTO)

When one eye is covered - usually by hair or by part of a hat, it evokes the playfulness of a child's peek a boo game. As we grow out of childhood, in the context of romantic relationships, this playfulness overlaps with and morphs into a sex appeal. While it is certainly more common with women and those who are androgynous, it's also a body language signal seen in straight men with longer hair or with the brim of a hat.

When flirting, one should take care not to stare with the uncovered eye. Only short glances, with brief eye contact - made only for a second or two - then broken by looking down (not sideways) - and then reestablished for another evanescent moment - will send signals of sexual interest. A simultaneous sincere smile (Duchenne smile) - particularly a partially suppressed one, will potentiate the message of sexual attraction.

Displaying only part of the face also adds to an ambiance of mystery - which helps with advertising, attention and establishing romance.

Thank you Prince - you'll be missed. My condolences to your friends and family.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3489: Margot Robbie wants Prince Harry - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although Margot Robbie has been in a relationship with Tom Ackerley, a British assistant director, for almost two years, her appearance on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show tells us she desires Prince Harry. When actors are not "in character", particularly when they're discussing their personal lives and experiences - they're no better than average at suppressing their nonverbal behavior.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Ms. Robbie's this appearance.

During 0:09 - 0:11, Margot displays a variation of the elbows-out, armpit configuration as Jimmy Fallon takes out the picture taken in a photo booth which includes (along with some friends) both herself and Prince Harry (who she had mistook for Ed Sheeran).

The elbows-out armpit display, when coupled with certain facial expressions conveys a significant element of sexuality (In this moment Ms. Robbie's face includes a sincere smile/sincere laughter with blushing which carries with it a component of embarrassment). It doesn't necessarily indicate that a person is attracted to someone in the immediate area. It does however mean that they are feeling, significantly sexual. Of course here she's on TV and the Internet - so her display is to a much larger audience than most moments in life.

Not surprisingly, this effect of this nonverbal cluster is significantly amplified when armpits are not covered by clothing. What may be intriguing to some people however, is that the elbows-out, armpit exposed body language will also often sexually stimulate many of those who see this behavior.

This particular nonverbal cluster is indicative of a high sincerity moment (0:40 - 0:42).

When the head-neck unit is tilted (and here rotated as well) coupled with finger/thumb touching of the temple region - along with a smile - the smile is almost always a sincere one (Duchenne Smile). Her blushing also indicates a high level of sincerity.

Immediately after Fallon points out that Harry was also in the picture, Margot touches her ring on the ring-finger of her left hand (1:14 - 1:15) indicating a romantic emotional tone toward the Prince.

Watch out Tom Ackerley, your princess is on the prowl.
